Why is Mass Effect 1 the best one in the entire franchise? Also, where are all the other sci-fi space RPGs? Why do devs only keep making fantasy RPGs?

ME1 is best at capturing wanderlust and explorer spirit. Planets you visit for the most part are either barren, are just starting colonization and you have different environments.
>Yes there is a geth base on a heavily irradiated moon that's orbiting a blue giant star
>Here\s this planet whose biosphere is toxic to other life
One great thing ME1 does over 2 and 3 is that your companions use armor instead of what looks like fancy clothes.

Because 1 still had this cosmic horror aspect with the mysterious entity that are the reapers who assimilate all life and are basically unbeatable and hard to understand. Before they devolved to clown villains.
Also, Saren is a million times better antagonist than any of the retards from the following games. I actually even felt bad for him, whereas I just wanted the others to finally shut up and die. The player characters and choices also get worse in the latter games. The gameplay is the only part that improved.
>>
>>746099118
The other games didnt even have real villains. Harbinger was kinda there but same time he was non-existent. Who even was in 3? Smoking Man?! Samurai Jap guy? 3 literally did not have no villain except Marauder Shields.
>>
>>746095529

I have no idea how companies can spend millions and millions on a game and mess up something so obvious and important
>>
>>746099669
most the budget went to the actual game. The company trying to make it is trying to follow Larian's footsteps.

>>746099118
I feel like they set themselves up for failure. The problem with having your otherwordly, "You do not understand" villains is you actually have to follow up, and that's really hard - even for an experience, competent writer.

Reading the original ideas, they honestly weren't that much better. It was basically like that one episode of Star Trek where they have to limit warp travel (but it's never mentioned again).

Of course this doesn't mean you can't have cool, original, nuanced villains. But they set themselves up to fail from the starting gate by making Reapers more than a one game antagonist.
>>
>>746101154
Reapers should have been a looming threat, not solved in a single game.

>Why is Mass Effect 1 the best one in the entire franchise?
Unlike Mass Effect 2, it had actual level design instead of about half a dozen different hallways repeated, FAR deeper character building, better equipment options (ANY equipment options compared to 2's dogshit, actually), no fucking planet scanning, a Mako, and many sidequests that actually felt like they belonged in and/or expounded on the setting, instead of being mostly family therapy for your retard crew.

Unlike ME3, ME1 didn't completely shit the bed at about the 2/3rds mark. Not having Kai Leng is also a point in ME1's favor.
>>
>>746095529
Man I fucking hate "destiny" shit, especially in sci-fi.
Also looks like there are even more generic looking humans and the humans were always the lamest characters of ME. I know that playing a krogan or turian would be way too cool for Bioware but they could have at least added some to the team. Instead I only see a wolfguy for the furry shitters.

I think you can have an unbeatable, cosmic entity in a game and resolve the story without defeating it directly to keep the mystery and lovecraftian horror alive. Saren was a good example, because he was a prophet of the reapers and eventually turned into their puppet up to the point at which he has lost himself and committed suicide, showing how big the threat is. But at the same time you only had to defeat Saren. The reapers still existed, but you managed to get rid of their harbinger. I don't think that it's for the best to always end a story by saving the universe. Sometimes it's cooler to just avoid the apocalypse, even if you know that there threats looming in the vastness of space for as long as other species exist.

Regardless of how you solve the reaper question though the plot of part 2 was just unnecessary and retarded. After all the alien and cryptic content of part 1 I was expecting 2 to delve deeper into that. Instead we got retarded human drama and romances. I legit hate everything related to Cerberus and it almost made me drop the game midways.

Because most fantasy is just copypasted garbage with the same races, same look, roughly the same worldbuilding and same random bullshit plots about magical mcguffins and chosen ones so you can produce them in masses and the mainstream will eat it up and scream OOOOOOOOOOOOOHH as if the game just invented electricity. And if you want to be 100% sure just add some generic romance options with elves and they will throw money at you.

What's weird is that ME1 is the only one that felt like it was set up to have sequels. 2 had so little plot 3 had to fart the crucible off screen to have something working and still ignored what little 2 set up. 3 in general does a lot to ignore your choices.
Kill the rachni queen? Reapers made a new one.
Destroy the collector base? Cerberus somehow recovered it.
Made Anderson the leader? He retires off screen between games.
>>
>>746104074
True enough, but like i said it has a good exploration feel to it. ME2 had better variety but that's because they condensed planets into individual dungeons with "exploration" done trough the resource minigame.
In ME3 they changed the formula further by removing resource scanning and included squad banter.
But because of that ME1 has more pronounced exploratory feeling.

It was mega gay that we couldn't even visit the very planets our team mates came from. I would have killed to be able to land on Palaven but nah.
In general the games felt cheaply made to me. The planets (if there were any) were bland and barren (which would be cool if there was variety and if some of them were inhabited), the character models were very limited (most aliens were just the same dude recolored) because they couldn't be arsed to do more and the world in general was lame, at least the part we were allowed to visit. Which is sad because the lexical entries and extra content contained more interesting world building than the games themselves. Also, there wasn't a single human I liked IIRC.

In hindsight the only team members whose personalities I still remember 10+years later are Wrex and Garrus.

>>746106084
They meant for ME3 to be the "homeworlds" game where we got to go to every major planet, and Palaven was meant to be in the game as well, but they couldn't do the concept justice so they made it the moon instead, and just showed the planet in the distance.
I hope ME5 will take us to Palaven and Thessia in a major way.

I also like it how it has less plot scenarios and each one of them is given more time to develop than in 2 or 3. Something like Noveria feels far more involved than most missions in the later games, because it’s so multi-phased, not just some 30 min ”dungeon”.
>>
>>746105396
I feel like ME1 lacks scenery other than the major places we went to in the story, which is pretty condense and quite short actually. ME3 has great vistas and graphics but as you say, it just lacks almost the entire "exploration" factor. I actually think 2 served pretty well in exploration, because while each Level is an action stage, every level almost always takes place somewhere significant, and a bunch of them are locations directly next to the hub areas on Illium, Tuchanka and Omega, so it felt like we actually got to see a lot of spaces fleshed out. Like for example, Mordin's clinic is mostly rooms with cover, but we do also reach the clinic as part of the level and see what Omega is like in this regard. Mordin's Loyalty Mission takes us through the Clan Weyrloc hospital and shows more of the crappy Tuchanka buildings and nuclear wasteland.

I didn't have this feeling in 3 when I got to Thessia. Everything was "Fire in the hole" and "It's warrrr" but the vista looked so pretty and I just wished it was an exploration level.
>>
>>746101154
The Reapers were solved in the first game
There was never a need for them to come back
>>
>>746107454
Duh.
ME2 and ME3 have "missions". ME1 just had locations. It's one thing I always wished would've come back. ME3's environment design is actually quite good and roomy. It's just a shame it's solely used for corridor shooting. Andromeda had some of what I wanted, but then it was Andromeda, and they blew it out of proportion, and wanted to make an Ubisoft thing.

>where are all the other sci-fi space RPGs? Why do devs only keep making fantasy RPGs?
Sci-fi stuff needs to have some amount of grounding. That's not to say they need to be realistic, but everything needs to be explained in a way that isn't instantly dismissible as bullshit, and that takes actual effort.
With fantasy you can just keep making up increasingly powerful kinds of magic or older and more obscure enchanted artifacts for perpetual escalation. You can also just do lazy knockoffs of DND designs and concepts since there's decades of precedent for people getting away with that, where with sci-fi most existing franchises have distinct looks that you have to be more careful in stealing from.
TLDR: laziness

Starfield came out 3 years ago and is one of the best RPGs of the generation. We also have Exodus and Expand RPGs coming out which look deeply inspired by mass effect. Star Trek Voyager game that came out this year was also impressive in the amount of decisions you can make.

I doubt it unless it's a whole new team and CEO responsible for it. But the trailer makes it feel like it will be very focused on human drama again which would be lame unless it's some existential mindfuck philosophy shit like in the good classic sci-fi literature, but no way EA/Bioware are interested in that. I am not a fan of the generic designs either. Nobody from the trailer looks interesting IMO.

>Why is Mass Effect 1 the best one in the entire franchise?

Fantasy is easy to make. It's a much more accessible genre for someone who doesn't want to adhere to strict rules created by the setting, they can just go
>it's magic bro
to explain away everything.
Mass Effect 1 was the best in the series because it mostly adhered to the rules it created for its setting, and was more or less a straightforward space opera with interesting characters and a good antagonist, no one was character-assassinated unlike in the sequels. Also, despite having literal space magic, the actual magic of the setting, like Reapers absorbing the "essence" of a species and other such nonsense completely ruins the narrative hook of 2 and sets up 3 for failure since it had to follow up a broken and poorly thought-out sequel.
>>
>>746110861
We've literally seen nothing but memberberries so far, and a few concept arts of environments that look very red.
I hope they're going for a Brave New World thing. A Dystopic Future for the setting that we can barely recognize, and a longing for what it used to be. I would personally love to write/design for a game that did something like that, because you'd have the context of what the series used to be, but replace the impossibly large Reaper threat with something totally self-inflicted which can only be beaten with the power of rebellion and truth to power, but it's truth to our own power and not Reapers this time. Essentially a plot where you have to figure out how to reach authorities that are further and more deeply nested than even the Council, and live in the "Matrix" of a sedated and over-bureaucratic version of a Citadel style setting, and then get to be like V for Vendetta who with a crew of other "awoken" individuals run an influence campaign against the oppressors and break up society and show another huge moment in galactic history.

one of my biggest complaints is Bioware removing the tiered armor variants after ME1. it just wasnt exciting to get new armor in the other games.
>>
>>746112770
My biggest fear is that they bring fucking Shepard back. I can't even be attached to self-insert characters since they don't even have a fixed personality so I couldn't give less of a shit about him/her and the Asari so I really hope that they have the balls to do something new. They can bring some of the races back but please let us get new characters and don't bring the reapers back.
>>
>>746118909
Mass Effect 1 was also boring as fuck. But it was amazing in the end.
>>
>>746119216
I'm sure this will be totally worth the $70 to play SP Outriders, which is what it looks like.
>>
>>746119168
They will bring Shepard back but not as the playable character. I know little things about what the plot is through people in the modding scene who are in touch with some of the people that worked on it.
Basically it's something where Shepard had some memory thing in his implants from the Lazarus project, but after the timeskip and ME3 endings he's "dead/missing" and one of the main threads in the plot is to find Shepard's DNA and implants, and trace it back to a new Geth Revival site thingy, where he's being brought back to life, but lost the memories of the past 5 years where important plot shit happened, so he's out of business but the protagonist has to take on his advice.

Kinda sounds like the Yoda/Luke thing but he's not just a recluse. I think Snake in MGS2 is a more apt comparison.
>>
>>746119393
I'm in it for the A->B storyline with characters and dialogue options along the way.

I won't be ME1/2 tier, but it will be one of the better games we've had since Mass Effect 3, and I'm up for that. I literally don't play a single Mass Effect or BioWare game for its gameplay. Couldn't care less if it's a competent shooter or a tactical-pause slopfest. I'm there for the environments and story RP.
>>
>>746119925
But neither the plot, nor the characters look interesting, and the protagonist is a charisma vacuum.
>>
>>746120071
I think in the time since you played the Mass Effects and today, you've lost sight of how generic they actually seemed in the beginning. Mass Effect 1 I almost put down before I finished it and it was only afterwards that I ended up thinking it was better than Halo as a sci-fi world, because it's such a snoozefest and the characters are really dry.
>>
>>746120363
I really do not see where this is coming from. ME1 looked absolutely revolutionary for its time, as a launch X360 title. Now it would looks absolutely bland, but back then it had presentation and brand name behind it. This is $40 title that sells 1-2 million copies.

This. We NEED more GTA VI threads.
>>
>>746094495
People didn't know any better back then. I hated the stop and pop cover shooting and incredibly stiff animations. And the colors and bloom just hurt my eyes.
>>
>>746119696
Well that wouldn't be too bad at least. I can accept it if it's just a NPC, though I had hoped that more time has passed.
I wonder how they will solve the ending problem. Personally I don't care which one they go for (if asked I think Synthesis is the most interesting but they would never choose that anyway) but I know that certain types of fans will be mad about it. And femshep fags will be mad about the gender too since they will probably stick to maleshep. But again, I couldn't care less. Just hope the story is good, the team members varied and that the exploration part will be better.
>>
>>746096713
This
Mass Effect 1, a big part of the game is exploration.
Just from the top of my head, barren planets aside, Mass Effect 1 has you poking into a largely unexplored archeology site, poking into the site where an eldritch, ancient life form has been buried for thousands of years, being the first person in thousands of years to see the Prothean world, and even the Citadel was a massive, somewhat confusing area to navigate at first, framing navigation of it as something overwhelming.
Then the barren planets are frequently undeveloped, or mostly undeveloped, and whenever you do find something like a base, there's the idea that these people have set up shop somewhere they picked because it's between nothing and fuck-all.
Mass Effect 2 & 3, you're running through hallways and dungeons made by some chucklefuck, with any exploration at all being "look at the spooky ooky space station". The Citadel and other large locations are overly streamlined with travel points. You explore almost nothing.
I think the suicide mission itself is like, the most concise argument. Nobody has seen this, this IS actually something that you're exploring, but it has all the wonder of a SWAT raid. Nobody is collecting samples, nobody is taking pictures.
>>
>>746119393
I never buy games when they're new, wait till the first big -75% sale on steam, they come sooner than you think and AA+ games aren't worth the full price anyway.
>>
>>746121758
Then this is a game from a studio that won't make a second.
>>
>>746120828
I was pretty fucking jaded in 2007 looking at a lot of early ME1, and wondering why Geoff Keighley and game magazines was shilling this so hard. I also didn't play KOTOR because "RPG", and after Half Life 2 and Doom 3, the initial prospect of Mass Effect looked incredibly AAA Default, art-direction wise, and it was only in playing it and grasping the value of prolonged context and deeper writing done with the volume of voice acting an RPG has, that made me go "Oh, this is actually better than a Halo story." and even then, there's emotional and pacing-related things I think Bungie did way better with Halo 2 and 3 than they do with Mass Effect.

And if it wasn't for ME2 and ME3 being examples of being really poor in some ways, a lot of people were not super impressed when ME1 was brand new, because it came across as a less good KOTOR story, and as amazing as the prothean twist was, it was slightly undermined by the circularity and nonsense of the entire Ilos/Mu Relay plot point.

Also Benezias archetype in ME1 is botched to fuck. She's clearly meant to be a huge deal and then all we had was 1 voice clip and a shot of her boobs talking to saren, before you randomly bump into her on Noveria and pretend it's something bigger than it is with horrible writing/acting from Liara.
>>
>>746121882
You can also make a shitton of money with sales since billions of people will buy it then who didn't have the money for 80$+ or weren't willing to spend them on. It's their fault for only looking at the first weekend. Even IF I buy a game at full price (I only do this with indie but whatever) I rarely buy it right in the first week.
>>
The argument over which is best is hard, but I highly suggest you get the
>Limited Edition
with all 3 games and then
>Use all the major mods, including the one that completely from scratch brings back and expands the entire 2nd DLC for the first game, Pinnacle Station.
Modders literally did a better job vs the devs in this regard recreating the entire thing and adding to it. Also
>LE3 mods are fucking amazing, notably Expanded Galaxy Mod + Spectre Mod. Want a different ending entirely? JAM is the way to. Did you want more Miranda or Thane? They both have mods that made them full companions with custom quests that stay on he Normandy etc. Really great if you're romancing one of them

>>746119696
If this is the case, I hope we can still import ME3/LE3 save data so that it will affect shit for him. I want to see him meet the entire Quarian lineage if he was with Tali, or ideally get back with Liara considering she's still alive for this one even if thts thousands of years later and she's a Matriarch. THere could also be things like the enlightened Krogans treating him as a near mythic figure and Wrex/Eve's progeny still leading Clan Urdnot and have basically become the "president" of the Krogan society, showing it was right to cure the genophage if all the pieces were there. Conversely, if your save had dead Eve, no Wrex, Wreav instead etc.. and you either cured it or faked it that would be visible too. There's a lot of potential for stuff that Shepard did in the other games to be visible if they actually put in the effort, even if he's not the protag of this one

jesus i can totally see it happening

I also hope they get Claudia Black to voice someone. I know it will probably go over the newfags, but between voicing Morrigan in Dragon Age 1 and her roles on Farscape and Stargate SG:1, she's basically etched into the psyche of those of us a certain age as boner inducing during the 2000s.

All I want is a nice, casual woodchipper for trannies, I mean femshep.

>Why is Mass Effect 1 the best one in the entire franchise?
It's not. Mass Effect 2 is the only game in the franchise that got it right.

Unfortunately BioWare revealed on a panel back in 2015 that they have an internal rule of "thou shalt not fuck thineself" when it comes to letting new protagonists bump into old protagonists, like we've seen in Dragon Age. This means we won't get to be a male simp who fucks the Femshep we created all those years ago.

Pretty much. Mass Effect 1 didn't blow my mind before I sunk myself into it. Exodus will be the same. The marketing won't convince you it's anything great.

The development of the Asari is one of the few things I actually like about the later games.
The Asari being the pet project of the Prothians to engineer a species to finally break the cycle, and making something that sucks at everything, and jobs with every single advantage. The first place medal goes to a bunch of brainlet lizard orcs that probably would have broken the cycle on their own if they weren't sabotaged by the society made by the Asari, second to humans who are just THAT good, and third to the Turians who can't even do psychic bullshit on their own and have funny exploding midgets to do their accounting. Or maybe the neurotic frog men.
And their galactic legacy mostly boils down to being prostitutes, and a bureaucratic nuisance to everyone not currently fucking one.
That is some cosmic, comedic irony.

If the council in the next game isn't made up of Krogans, Turians and Humans, Bioware is SHIT.

2015 was a lifetime ago, everyone of value probably left bioware by now
the only reason why i might be willing to check out new mass effect is the fact that the lead writer of deus ex HR/MD is at bioware and she supposedly works on me5 or whatever it's called

Like I said, a game from a studio that won't make a second.
