Being helpless against the demon attack that orphaned him, and later falling behind Dante's progress where Dante doesn't give a flying fuck about training or getting stronger unless it's for the sake of stopping Vergil himself or Mundus
The reason it works in a game like DMC is because the gameplay carries the entire franchise. Nobody cares that a lot of the characters are either one-note or have very barebones personalities. There's a reason why the DMC games that get the most critique about their stories are DMC2/5, because the story genuinely so baffling, bad and abused that you can't overlook. Do you even recall what the story or the character arcs were in DMC1/3 beyond the basics? Of course not, because their gameplay is legit addicting that you can easily ignore the story.To use another example, do you care that the Doomguy is basically an autist on a nerd rage revenge hunt against hell because they killed his pet rabbit? Do you actually bother or criticize that part in Doom 2?
