having controversial characters/stories that create friction with the player isn't a bad thing and I think the response to what DA2 tried to do is why the subsequent games were increasingly HR-friendly. It just needed more time to cook to not reuse maps so badly.

I loved the party of fuckups and that Anders was a particularly egregious hypocritical asshole. Even the friendly/rivalry type of relationships you form with the party members color the story well.

Hawke can friendmance Isabella and still get fucked over because she's a selfish whore but she'll feel bad about it and try to fix it or rivalmance anders and constantly tell him his whole ideology is retarded and guilt him into killing himself.

I will probably go down as the biggest DA2 defender, there was a real genuine attempt at something different and part of the reason the later games suck are probably because DA2 was considered such a flop, and to some extent it's deserved, but if the game had gotten like a year more time of development and the ability better flesh out the city, not make the conflict feel so asinine and full of retarded actors it could have been great, instead what we get is a game with a lot more potential than actual value.
