Including a download code and 3 months of switch online costs them very little and you pay 50 dollars more for a product that is being sold on presumably razor thin margins. I remember switch 1 being like 265 dollars or so to produce in 2017, so once RAM prices rose no doubt Nintendo took a hit on hardware profits and is hoping to win the software wars long term insteadHence the digital code, which is gonna make you more likely to buy other games digitally as well.It's good business.
