I can imagine that a chinese guy in the 80s getting basically "black market" knock off tapes of Japanese and US shows that were basically ignored by the local censors during the Deng era is kinda like how some people in the US ONLY knew about anything in China from HK kung fu videos sold at those >Oriental Imports LTD or similarly named store in the mall. I guess the dev decided not to learn too much about what the US or Japan were actually like in the 80s and 90s before making the game, so it will be his fever dream recollection of what he thought their cultures meant and made a game around that.
