What's the difference between a one time download from a disc and a one time download from a digital storefront, and how is this difference so big that you would willingly give up ownership, literal free rebate value, for nothing in return?
>>746236561the only people who actively give a shit about physical are either mentally ill, or grifters trying to sell "le graded games" to other grifters (also mentally ill)
>>746236090They're going to be rewarded by not selling much lmao>>746236561>one timeI'd love that but digital kids would throw a massive fit if the download for digital games isn't a license attached to account that allows multiple downloads. Personally, I don't care about those and see them as a benefit, extra to the purchase
>>746236090>snk>now atariwho's next?
>>746236653I disagree.

>>746236090The true enemy is DRM and closed ecosystems of consoles. Physical is nice, but not when your game's content is at the mercy of a central server. If consoles are just stripped down PCs, you should be able to use them like PCs.
>>746236843>the ones that brought paid online by whispering the idea to MS>the ones overpricing the fuck out of every digital gacha they can reach>the ones that remove digital games just because in case of a re-release >the ones that started being cheap in gaming trend back in the day by using only black and white ink for the manualsI... hope it's not the case. Unless you want a digital only, overpriced thing that will follow existing trends done by everyone to hell and back by now.
>>746236830Rereleasing neo geo aes games along side the aes+.
>>746236965You can't escape DRM; it's how the publisher or IP owner chooses how you experience their software (this extends strictly to the media storage format)

>>746236561You are still ignoring my answer from the other thread...
>>746236090>atari relaunch the games that caused the atari shock and crashed the game market.Wow!!! Normally you learn from mistakes and improve but atari is doing the same shit it did decades ago in 1983... just Wow!!.
>>746236965>The true enemy is DRMActually the true enemy is media ownership being forfeited. But I'll bite: what is DRMs relevance to ownership, and how is it so directly linked in your mind that it is your #1 deflection you trun to when defending the anti consumer practices of digital platforms?
>>746237409Post it
>>746237487So that you can ignore it again? No.Reread that thread carefully and you'll get your answer.
>>746236090Oh wow that sounds cool>2600Yeeeaaaaahh never mind
>>746237542Hell yeah.
>>746236561The difference is minimal to nothing. One binder will store a lifetime of media. The value of ownership far outweighs a corporation saving a shareholders dime.Physical > digital
>>746236965You vegan kids are fucking obnoxious like anon said >>746237434 it's the forfeit of ownership. Something PC kicked off quite fast and was accepted for the sake of convenience despite convenience never being the reason for better things
>>746237621>One binder will store a lifetime of media. But one hard drive can't?
>>746237770Considering the bloat in size lately; no. Unless it's 5 tera at least
>>746236090Atari's been kinda cool in recent years like MicroProse, helping publish niche stuff like carrier command 2.
>>746236561>not a single answer
>>746237808And how many physical discs does it take to hold a 400 GB game?
>>746237770A hard drive could same as a binder. I never said a hard drive couldn't. I never proposed abolishing digital media.
>>746237658PC games were being throttled by anti consumer practices attached to physical discs long before the advent of digital store fronts with limited use codes and cancerous DRM practices. Why are console fags so delusional and believe a piece of plastic means you automatically own your games? If your game relies on online connectivity in any way it doesn't matter if you have a disc or not. There is also literally nothing stopping PC players from burning their own discs if a game lacks the DRM to allow you to. You're also not shackled to Steam on a PC where consoles are completely at the whim of the console manufacturer (who are more than willing to make you pay to play p2p games or brick your console).
>>746238002>Why are console fags so delusional and believe a piece of plastic means you automatically own your games? What about the fact of media ownership is delusional to you?
>>746237947None since only a retard would bother with anything above 25gb
>>746238002>PC games were being throttled by anti consumer practices attached to physical discsSuch as?
>>746238002>PC games were being throttled by anti consumer practices attached to physical discs long before the advent of digital store fronts with limited use codes and cancerous DRM practices. No, those are console's physical. PC had massive piracy leading to downsize of production in 03>Why are console fags so delusional and believe a piece of plastic means you automatically own your games?Because it's true and it used to be for PC games in 90s as well, faggot seething to consoles.
>>746238190>OY VEY WE HAVE TO INCLUDE DRM BECAUSE THE GOYS ARE PIRATING OUR GAMES >That means it was STEAM that killed physical on PC not retarded publishers and retarded industry practices I bet this fag buys Game Key Cards.

>>746238597you're poor
>>746238559Post it
>>746238597It's the same scam; keycards don't have a game. It's a license, a full price license just like the type a fair amount of people pays on Steam. Worse thing is: they're giving money to jewish third parties, yeah surely things are going to improve like that lol
Is retro gaming really coming back in earnest or is this all pandering to a handful of 60 year old whales like that dude that recently got his $100,000 nes collection robbed? I might play half an hour of Genesis, ps1 & ps2 once in a blue moon, I'm not putting any serious time into it or finishing any games though.
This guy >>746236561 won't read your answers, responding with non sequiturs, saying that "you ingored part of the question" and calling anything longer than a sentence a wall of text written by a timewasting troll, so don't bother actually trying to seriously respond to him.

>>746238883Yeah people have always been playing games from any era quietly in their homes, it just seems like these past few years and increasingly this year it's becoming more mainstream and marketable. >>746236653Xbox just announced disc to digital. I have about 50 physical games I couldn't play on my Series S. Now I'll be able to get a digital license for them.
>>746236090Is this some jewish scheme to make physical Atari games then use that as evidence nobody actually cares about physical since nobody alive actually cares about the Atari and won’t buy any of them or will it usher in some golden age of retro vibes where other companies will remake physical versions of 90s kino for people to buy and feel

>>746239280No, without a contract recognized by law this isn't true. And if you actually bother to read the TOS, you'll see that you are forbidden to resell it, but people do it anyway since it's hard to legally enforce these things.

I'm still waiting for the PS2 Classic (with retroarch softmodded to change the library to my tastes).
>>746238759> Is retro gaming really coming back in earnest or is this all pandering to a handful of 60 year old whales like that dude that recently got his $100,000 nes collection robbed?Do you really think kids today would even consider playing that old ass uncslop? Would the uncs for that matter? Because the uncs were pretty fucking excited when newer generations of games came along back then. No one preferred that shitty old Atari over a NES, mega drive, PS1 and so on. So called ”retro gaming” is completely performative.
>>746239580>re-releaseNot every game gets re-releases
>>746239534Because Nintendo is control of those servers and they're cheap due data size of the files being small. GKC games most likely not and those are far more expensive for small 3rd party developers, prease understand.
>>746236561Why is nobody replying with the real answer? You can't resell a digital game. The price is fixed by the publisher. You CAN resell physical games. No physical games means you're COMPLETELY at the mercy of the publisher even if you don't mind being at the mercy of their online store for media longevity.
>>746239439You're so fucking retarded. Exchange of money with a handshake is a legally binding contract, look it up, dunce. And EULAs don't determine ownership. It's a direct attack on Steam and GoG.Not at all; gkc were a 3rd party petition, you know; the guys that asked an option for their games above 64gb when they shouldn't be that big and that use a gkc even for their games below 2gb in size. That said GoG is the only one that actually sells you something you can't control, gkc and steam are 2 shades of digital license cucking.
>>746236653>the only people who want to actually own the things the buy are mentally illand here i thought retardedness had a ground floor, but you just demonstrated we can dig way below that
>>746240479I assure you... he can get so much deeper under the right context
>>746236561Physical doesn't offer me modding or backups or the ability to modify the content on disk, so it's infinitely worth more than selling it to gamestop for 5 dollars.
>>746240479But you objectively own the license regardless of whether it's digital or physicalWhat matters are the terms of that license and physical comes with extreme limitations now
>>746240473>Then you'd know they don't really exist and are held togheter by hopes and dreams with any given company easily trampling over themI do know that which is why the shelf life of all digital media is at the mercy of good faith from the corporations and potential future consumer rights litigation because currently EVERY digital platform can rugpull their consumerbase with little to no penalty. Once the industry goes full or near full digital with little option to own your media then legal terms will be put in place by petitioning consumers. >That said GoG is the only one that actually sells you something you can't controlNobody fucking cares.

>>746240969>yet pc physical was pushed out of stores by consoles where you can't have thatPiracy, not consoles.

>>746239423Yeah digital sucks
>>746240872I'd rather support digital without DRM, because it shows that the devs trust me enough to let me modify and rip their product apart for my own amusement. Better than physical, which is just "you may not play with our toy unless it's under our supervision."
>>746241025>Holefully I won't need to because physical isn't dying and ownership will be secured.I hope so but I'd be coping; this was written in stone 20 years ago. They're still digital crap you don't own, however Steam and gkc cancer is the lesser cancer there but cancer anyway.
>>746241162Devs can fuck their trust. I'll take their money over their trust.
>>746241162>Better than physical, which is just "you may not play with our toy unless it's under our supervision."Wrong. That's only a possible view, in this case coming from a mod tranny. Fair you like to make a travesty of the games you play but not everyone likes that so you have options and the same goes for the rest much to your dismay
>>746241194>They're still digital crap you don't own,Actually I'd cash out proving I did in fact own them.
>>746240990Dumb frogposter but kind of based as well
>>746238713Technically speaking, discs and cartridges also only ever gave you a license to play the game. This isn't some new thing, its just how all media has always worked. Its a legal technicality so some jackass can't turn around and say "uh, I bought zelda that means I can do whatever I want with this game including selling new copies"
>>746241254>actually DRM is good>you shouldn't be able to modify the game you bought, even if it's physical, because muh DRM and muh copyright and IP law
>>746236090>Atari
>>746241286>I'd cash out proving I did in fact own them.Nope. There's no game in there, specially keycards. You could sell the account with them, sure. Or flat out scam some retard that thinks or don't know a gkc has no game in there. But real ownership? non-existant there (GoG is meant to be free of use once paid)
>>746241319I should clarify, my point isn't that nothing has changed, its just that the "you're only buying a license to play it" thing isn't new. Whats actually new is that this license is revokable, previously when you bought a license to play these games you just had that license forever, but now your license can be revoked at any time because its stored virtually and not included with the disc/cartridge. But the same thing applies to modern physical media, they can revoke your access to the game by taking away the license you paid for even if you still have the disc.
>>746241319>technically books and vinyls also only gave you a license to read and listen to themYou're wrong btw. When you buy a book, you get a book, the book is licensed. When you buy a game , you get a game, the game is licensed. You don't know how anything works you dumbfuck pseud.
>>746241450Then why do my old movies and games say "you're only buying a license" on the case?
>>746241319>Technically speaking, discs and cartridges also only ever gave you a license to play the game. No; they give you a copy of the game factually. The one thing you paid for. "Technically it's all a license" is digital shill's strawman after mixing up purchase of a copy with purchase of the IP>"uh, I bought zelda that means I can do whatever I want with this game including selling new copies">including selling new copiesAnd here's the assuming IP ownership, which simply doesn't exist.
>>746241406Are you retarded? GKCs can be legally sold. There was an entire promotion detailing exactly how they function.
>>746241358Because of faggots like you Todd is going to get away with paid mods
>>746241525>No; they give you a copy of the game factually. The one thing you paid for.No, what you paid for was a license to access the content privately. How that content is delivered to you might change, but what you've purchased is still effectively the same license for private viewing.
>>746241474License to what anon? You can't license nothing.
>>746241534>GKCs can be legally sold.Correct; and they have no videogame within. It's effectively a scam. One that some seem to think it's ok or simply accept. But don't make the retarded claim gkc are games because that's flat out not true.
>>746241579>No, what you paid for was a license to access the content privatelyNo you paid for a game and that game is licensed.
>>746241570No, it's because of faggots like you that we can't freely mod our games, because corporations want total control over how we do it. Hence paid mods. You guys literally pay for glorified mods like remakes and remasters, aka Oblivion remastered. So don't spew your BS at me.
>>746241579>No, what you paid for was a license to access the content privatelyWrong; you pay for licensed copy. Are you too stupid to read "licensed copy" and understand "copy is a license"?
>>746241630>Correct; and they have no videogame within. It's effectively a scamSo now that we agree that buying Steam Key Codes and Gog Key Codes are a scam, you're buying a string of text and not a game, what are you going to do with this information?
>>746241724Brother I don't really give a fuck about the semantics my point is that this shit isn't new just because zoomers are just now noticing the fine print.
>>746241693And paid mods wouldn't happen without retards trying to undermined game dev's work. You're in the wrong here
>>746241740>buying Steam Key Codes and Gog Key Codes are a scam, you're buying a string of text and not a gameJust wait until you find out that all old PC games came with game codes and thats what you were actually paying for then as well. Some games even had limited activations so you had to reformat your OS you'd have to buy the entire game a second time because your original copy was tied to that old OS.
>>746241763Correct, media being licensed goes back to the 1800s and isn't new. You factually buy the media, the media is licensed.

>>746241763More like you misunderstanding clear concepts from 40 years ago or so. I'd leave zoomies illiteracy out of the equation since they basically were born braindead
Has atari made any good consoles
>>746241854>I dont think my dad was even sentient when ET came outSometimes I forget just how young some of the people on /v/ are these days
>>746241740No. Only Steam coes, GoG is a better deal.>>746241821I don't think it's the same; you got the game AND the code. Now you barely get one + concessions
>>746241785Game devs deserve to have their work undermined. They're lazy schmucks and should be punished for trying to restrict how I play my game.
>>746240202But I did eat breakfast.
>>746241821>Just wait until you find out that all old PC games came with game codes and thats what you were actually paying for then as well.I have binders full of them. They all download from the disc without internet you dumbfuck. That was DRM protecting the mass distro if copies because a copy not paired to a code wouldn't work. Steam Key Codes work entirely different and activate a download from an external server. Stop talking.
>>746241871No, they only stick around because they got there first
>>746241904>I don't think it's the same; you got the game AND the code.Thats just because there was no alternative to printing it on a disc because digital distribution was still in its infancy.
>>746241904Yes gog is better than steam
>>746236090>atariThat's just the frog company Infogrames wearing Atari's skin.
>>746241909>Game devs deserve to have their work underminedMake the games yourself then, oh wait; you can't, simply too dumb or shit for it.
>>746241854Let me think. My dad saw pong and thought it was stupidDamn he is old
>>746241935>They all download from the disc without internet you dumbfuck.Yes because digital distribution wasn't a thing back then. there's functionally no difference between installing from a disc and using your CD key, or installing the game from some server and using your CD key. There is also literally nothing stopping you from burning your current steam games to discs and setting your disc drive as a steam library folder so you can just play your shit from disc like you used to.
>>746241951Wasn't magnavox first
>>746241994>Make the games yourself then,Way ahead of you. Fans make better games all the time.>AM2R>Mega Man X8 demake>SMBX (proto-Mario Maker, but better)>mountains of top tier romhacks like Mario in the Multiverse, or Hyper Metroid, or Moonrise RegaliaSorry that your AAA devs are too lazy to compete with literal code monkeys working for free in their basements.
>>746241998>there's functionally no difference between installing from a disc and using your CD key, or installing the game from some server and using your CD keyYes, there is; one is physical and the other is digital, one is meant to own the other is meant as a service. Gaben has been clear about Steam's goal.>There is also literally nothing stopping you from burning your current steam games to discsJust this little thing known as DRM in Steam.
>>746241998>Yes because digital distribution wasn't a thing back then.Yup. And the game is on the disc because of that. Needing an activation code is nothing at all like Steam Key Codes. ">Just wait until you find out that all old PC games came with game codes and thats what you were actually paying for then as well." you fucking moron. The game is on the disc. The code just activates it. Dunce. Stop talking.
>>746242121>Fans make better games all the time.>Never heard of them>Rare examples of fans making it into the gaming industry nowadays>Best thing the can make is deritative stuff or flat out trying to cling to existing IPHonestly that sound as bad as all those woketards infecting entertainment industries like leeches. Literal Anthony Burch in multiple amount
>>746241871>XEGS:DDDD
Old thing>this is yours to keep and you can do whatever you want as long as you don’t copy the digital data and distribute itNew thing>we will let you look at this as long as you connect to the internet every 48 hours, log in with your account, and give us your id, we may take it back at some point in the future if we feel like it
>>746241994>Make the games yourself thenThis is where based AI will save us
>>746242246>he thinks AI will compensate for lazy fucks complaining about devsIt's going to expose them even harder to the point AAA devs might look good in the end.
>>746242221>these games are bad because I've never heard of them>I'm going to ignore that the creator of SMBX went on to make Terraria, one of the most highly acclaimed indie games of all time>you'll probably shitpost and bring up some non-argument about how it doesn't count because of arbitrary reasonsI accept your concession.
>>746242310Everyone can be a dev with AI, we will no longer have a need for "megacorp devs"
>>746242313>these games are bad because I've never heard of themSince when you're under that impression, reddit spacer?
>>746242374>Everyone can be a dev with AIIt's the same thing as social media or youtube; just because everyone can do it doesn't mean everyone should do it. Expect a lot more of Mixtapes in the future
>>746242464So you admit that fans make good fangames all the time. Good to hear.
>>746242214>Needing an activation code is nothing at all like Steam Key Codes. Its literally the same thing, my original steam library was nothing but the games I owned physically cause I put the codes into steam to add it to my library. Its literally the exact same thing but you get a digital archive of all the games you've ever bought with all the CD keys tied to your account. Hell you can even go into the settings of some games and grab the CD key so you can play it outside of steam if you really wanted to. This all depends on whether or not the devs bother to support external validation
>>746242526>So you admit that fans make good fangames all the timeNo. Remove known IPs from those games and look how far they get. There's a reason why they used known IPs instead fully original games like they should've
>>746242613>Remove known IPs from those games and look how far they get. You get critically acclaimed games like Hollow Knight, Minecraft, Terraria, Environmental Station Alpha, and many others? >NOOO THOSE DON'T COUNT BECAUSE THEYR'E RIPPING OFF OTHER GAMESlol
>>746242541Shut the fuck up my guy. Licensed physical media you own that has the game fully on disc and requires entering a 16 digit alphanumeric to start the fully offline download is factually and not remotely comparable to purchasing a steam key code that unlocks access to games on an online account. Stop breathing.
>>746242723A fangame about what used to be minecraft?
>>746242723>le critically acclaim scapegoatA bunch of snobs validation is a worthy argument now? By that logic that Mixtape meme from some months ago could qualify
>>746242778It was a fan game of Infiniminer. ;)
>>746236561>TranimePut more respect on Luluco's name, jeez.
>>746242836I'm not relying on game journos. I'm saying that they're critically acclaimed by my own accord. They're good to me, which makes them good overall.Tell me, what metric would you use?
>>746237542holy shit, an actually good wojak meme in CURRENT_YEAR
>>746242748>Shut the fuck up my guy. Licensed physical media you own that has the game fully on disc>load up game from disc>V1.00>all the launch day bugs are still there>have to go online and download the patches to play itwow so different
>>746243063This is an ancient meme from back when Atari said they were gonna make a new console
>>746242872Never heard of it>>746242909>I'm saying that they're critically acclaimed by my own accord. So by no one? Sure I'll bait; you may fall for deritative stuff. I'd say Cuphead was a far more original game.>Tell me, what metric would you use?Originality. Any other metric is worthless by now imo.
>>746243131>Originality. Any other metric is worthless by now imo. Then no game is good. No game is original.>CupheadRipoff of shmups and disney movies. Bad game by your logic.

>>746243103>>have to go online and download the patches to play it>>746241998>Yes because digital distribution wasn't a thing back then.HMMMMMMMMMMMMDon't even reply back. This discussion is over now.
>>746237542This funky fella is about to show the kids how it's done in Defender
>>746236561You can resell the disk?
>>746243271>Digitally distributing the whole ass game is the same as going to their website and downloading the patchesI'm starting to think you're a larping zoomer that never actually played pre-steam games on PC
>>746239868You don't need to resell old games, but if there's no reselling market then prices will forever be at 80$ unless the publisher feels extra nice. When you can resell the publisher is pressured to lower their price. Are you retarded?
>>746243829>but if there's no reselling market then prices will forever be at 80$ That sounds like an AAA skill issue. Digital indie games on steam can sell for as little as 99 cents, even the ones whose physical versions aren't that popular.
>>746243932Okay, replace this with>prices will forever be at X% (X being the initial release price) rather than whatever the market DIRECTLY determines it to be, the market being the players and how cheap they're willing to resell itX doesn't have to be 80 for PHYSICAL MEDIA to be important
>>746244029That's the good thing about digital. If the price is too high, then the audience can enjoy it for 0 dollars. So the devs have every incentive to lower prices.
