>labyrinth of galleria
I have yet to play it or refrain. Are they fun? do the teams matter, and can I make lore up for my team? I heard they were just puppets or something
>>
>>746467570
>Are they fun?
Yes, Galleria being less fun because of the map layouts, but still fun.
>do the teams matter,
A lot, there's a thing called a coven that basically modifies how the team will work, if it's more attack oriented, healing oriented, defense oriented and whatnot.
>and can I make lore up for my team? I heard they were just puppets or something
Yes, but poppets are made for made up lore are they not? But yeah the main stories focus more on the people outside of the dungeons for most of their runtimes.
>>
>>746468057
Awesome, I might start this first one soon then. Once I got through dungeon traveller. I was gonna try etrian odyssey after but the map building looks complex
>>
I'm playing Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi right now. It's pretty good, interesting setting, reminds me a bit of Strange Journey. There are lots of QoL features for the actual crawling. My biggest issue is that the skills feel pretty boring for every class, at least until you get to advance classes, but you're pretty into the game before they even matter. Results in pretty boring combat.
>>
>>746467570
Don't be fooled anon. They're not good dungeon crawlers unless you're the type of person who enjoys watching your normal attack damage go up and occasionally losing progress because you got unlucky and encountered an enemy with a 10x stat modifier making it so you literally can't escape or fight back while it one-shots your party.

The only redeeming quality of Labyrinth of Refrain/Galleria is the story presentation.
>>
>>746468057
I had to drop Galleria because the random maps drove my crazy. The last dungeon being also randomly generated was the last straw
>>
>>746468336
Yomi is one of the more basic Experience Inc titles in terms of gameplay, unfortunately. Kino everything else, but the combat is just competently made and nothing more. I like Demon Gaze 2 and Stranger of Sword City a lot more.
>>
>>746468713
>Demon gaze 2
Still mad its not on pc.
>>
>>746469084
>not on pc
It's worse than that, you can't get a digital copy of the English version anymore since they were delisted. I'm holding out hope that they'll do DG2 Extra PC release and that Experience will finish the trilogy, but honestly that's probably copium.

It doesn't matter to me and not as much to savvy anons, but it does heavily limit the exposure of their games which kind of sucks if you want them to continue being made. Dungeon Crawlers already get a debuff for popularity.

>>746470946
If you stretch the definition to just mean having a focus on dungeons or level design then technically they are, but typically people use "dungeon crawler" to refer to something more specific like Etrian Odyssey or Grimrock. Otherwise you end up like Steam tags where Dungeon Crawler now means literally every single game that has something kind of resembling a dungeon.

What the fuck are you talking about?
That is basically every drpg? It's just your team going into turn based combat vs the enemy team?

Or do you literally mean the visual presentation and you can visually see your teammates there fighting the enemies?
And if so, potato flowers in full bloom exists and has that.
So either way it already exists and u saying some crazy shit
>>
>>746470768
Something like Conception then?
>Random generated dungeons with traps around that you can walk aside or bypass through items or skills
>Making a team by forming 3 units and you can get team skills that you can use if you put the right classes per team
>Not a first person view battle so you can see around the field
Almost mentioned Exstetra but its only because its difficulty can be DRPG tier since enemies scales on your level.

Huh, don't know why you can only find an S2 version but it's definitely been available on the switch previously. I found it pretty fun as long as you don't try to take things so seriously. Lots of girls to collect with 3 different underwear sets each and they all have their own inner dungeons to go through for upgrades. Can't really say anything about the other games though since I haven't played any of them
>>
>>746467051
I stopped playing DT2 around the time I unlocked tier 3 class because the game does not offer much in terms of team building. The unique skill for each character doesn't provide much incentive to grind up other party members.
>>
My dream game is a DRPG, 4 in a row game with full 3d battles with low poly models but high quality 2d art and portraits. You explore one long dungeon of like 500 floors, every 10 - 20 floors is a rest stop. And while time doesn't actually pass in the dungeon, it takes weeks, months or years in game. A custom team with class based autism, a romance feature where you can become partners with your team mates which gives you random buffs in battle when your partner gets hit or passes away including damage buffs or acting as a shield. My dream artist for it would be who ever did the art for either atelier sophie or Stella glow. Wish I could make it myself but I am still in the learning blender and drawing phase
>>
>>746472175
The mysterious sub-series games have 2 artists working on them but if it's Sophie you specifically like then you want NOCO( the other artist who worked on it is Yuugen)

I've kind of been in the mood for one, but nothing has caught my eye recently. I might revisit Might and Magic 3, Elminage Original, or Dungeon Travelers 2 at some point.

>>746468713
I agree with that. Demon Gaze is probably my favorite of their games overall, though I like SoSC's art style a bit better.

>>746469084
It is a shame it hasn't been ported anywhere. I think it's weaker than the first entry in most ways, but it's still a fun game.

>>746470946
This is why people sometimes resort to using terms like "blobber" or "DRPG," to make sure people don't start talking about stuff like Diablo and Zelda.

>>746471537
I wish the Conception games were better executed. I'm on board with the premise, but they're not particularly good.

>>746472019
Being able to have any combination of classes available to you whenever is actually a pretty big deal in the post-game (which is practically half the game's content) because you're forced to use different classes and party sizes at times.
>>
>>746475535
I'm curious why you think Demon Gaze 2 is weaker than the first, I thought it was their best game personally.
>>
>>746472019
DT2 provides one of the best dungeon crawler experiences but I agree the team building is the weakest part. Knowing which classes to use is a complete no brainer and there's little variation in how you can build most of them.
>>
>>746472175
To add onto this concept I'd add side activities that break up the constant crawling. Like rest stops that are just lakes to fish in or a rest stop that is a giant underground cafe that some monsters have set up to be kind to humans.
>>
>>746472019
I stopped right after skyfort. the postgame is too cbt for me. and I just reached post game in 2-2 and I'm already fed up with it.
>>
>>746476712
I dropped 2-2 after a while because I felt the dungeon design relied too much on "player arrives at a fork. if you pick the wrong option, a one way wall or hole sends you back to start. if you pick the right one, it's just another fork" over and over. It felt fucking exhausting to explore only to see 90% of the floor is just a bunch of corridors to loop the player back to start. 2 did that sometimes but it also had some amazing floor designs.

I am surprised nobody talks about this one. I know it's Touhou but from what I have heard it's actually kind of fun for the grind.
>>
>>746477121
never seen or consumed anything touhou, is it an actual competent dungeon crawler?
>>
>>746477221
Yes, unbelievably so, if you love class based systems and grinding it's really great from what I know of. Do not get the sequel game as that one is more isometric and is way too different than this one. I would say you might need a wiki kind of as there is not much description clarity at times. But it's heavily geared towards customization and party building with a 12 person army.

I wish there was a crawler that ticked all the boxes. I've yet to see a game with rewarding loot, fun exploration and battles, interesting skill/classes, and a great story. Most of the games in the genre have two of the above at most.
>>
>>746478351

It falls off in the post-post-game due to the grind walls and I really don't fucking like the Infinite Corridor, but yeah it was a good fucking game until then, still like it more than Tri.
>>
>>746478256
most encounters are optional, and unlike other dungeon crawlers entering and leaving combat can be done in 0.5 seconds
>>
I hate the fags that jerk off Wizardry 4 and post THAT pasta as if its a bastion of good game design
>>
>>746467570
I only played labyrinth of refrain but the combat is mindless even by jrpg standards. Winning is almost entirely a matter of how high your stats are. Character and party building are also pretty uninteresting. The dungeon exploration was good, not great. I wouldn't play it if you're looking for gameplay.

>>746478256
>Any tips for making the game less of a chore to play? I can stomach the absurd encounter rate of OG SMT SJ and PS2 era megaten but not DT2.
Train a scout in the passive that makes you good at running away and just run from encounters you don't want to fight. You can get into and out of a battle in like 1 second, and ending a battle by running away still triggers the maid skill that heals your HP and TP.
>>
>>746480983
>It falls off in the post-post-game due to the grind walls and I really don't fucking like the Infinite Corridor, but yeah it was a good fucking game until then, still like it more than Tri.
Yeah, it's best to stop playing Labyrinth of Touhou 2 when the story ends, after beating Orochi. Everything up to that point is great, and there's pretty much just a ton of grinding waiting for you after.

>>746477221
>never seen or consumed anything touhou, is it an actual competent dungeon crawler?
The party building and combat are both extremely good but the dungeons exploration is really basic.

I don’t really think grid dancing is gonna be my thing but I’m so starved for any crawler with verticality I’ll take what I can get.
Seriously something like Potato Flower’s 2D map but with some actual height should be way more popular
>>
>>746485293
I mean voxel grid rather than 2D grid on a flat plane
>>
>>746484170
the only ones i can think of like xanadu next or OG system shock are neither turn-based nor blobbers but they are kino.
>>
>>746485529
I think that's just a visual gimmick really, dungeon crawlers already have second floors and elevation in the form of transitions to different maps. Technically it's all a flat grid if you want to be pedantic, but in practice it functions the same way.
>>
>>746485764
True but it really adds to the immersion. For example being able to directly see above or below a floor makes the dungeon feel much more like an actual 3D space. Some mechanics like raising the water level can’t really be replicated smoothly on a flat grid too. I guess a flat map just doesn’t give me the same feeling of actually delving into a dungeon. It just feels too gamey for no reason.
>>
>>746486247
>Some mechanics like raising the water level can’t really be replicated smoothly on a flat grid too.
Well you could just use two identical map layouts that fill out at the same time, a transition between them when you open the floodgates and a cutscene showing it fill up inbetween. But I understand the idea that it would still feel different to some people. Unfortunately you're only going to find what you want in a really old regular jrpg or action game, I think.
>>
Do you guys class mystery dungeon games as dungeon crawlers or are they something else
>>
>>746467295
they are still recovering from being snoys and releasing nothing since the vita, after the to heart remake they said they were going to work on porting all 3 DT games to the switch first before doing anything new.
>>
>>746471159
>or Grimrock.
grimrock is both westoid goyslop AND tile dancer slop, and thus irrelevant to DRPG threads like these

Maybe play on short sessions.
DT2 has like 500 hours of content to tackle so you're not going to finish it fast. You can save anywhere so you can end a session anytime. Just don't do some stupid things like saving after getting trapped on a one way wall with a forced encounter on the next step.
>>
I want strange journey 2. I want a new dungeon crawler megaten game.
>>
>>746491729
or just keep mutiple save files. Another controversial option but possibly exciting is to only save in town.

What's your party?
Overall:
Paladin > Dark knight > Samurai
Magical girl > Bishop > Sage > Witch
Dancer > Bard > S&M
Joker (bosses), Papillon (fights) > Pupeteer
Sniper (damage), Treasure hunter (healing) >Kunoichi

And the level reset bonuses can get so high you can brute force the game anyway.

>>
>>746493506
still miffed that they nerfed the everfucking out of DL SA in 2. Especially the latter was my favorite in the series before they made aoe hit only 1 row and tripleslash ineffective against multiple enemy types.
>>
>>746482005
I read the old ass walkthrough for the game and man, it HAD good ideas but fuck the execution, i legit got filtered by knowledge check on the first fuckin floor, and the fact that it's mandatory to finish all 3 previous games just to get hints for the floor puzzle is fucking stupid.
>>
>>746496042
luco at least makes samurai decent in 2-2. DT2 late game is just totally fucked balance wise because of therian seal
>>
>>746483190
Mary Skelter 2, the remake of the original and Finale made the level design smaller and more compact, and the dungeons are a hundred time better as a result. The problem with the original's dungeons is that 80% of the floor would be empty and would just result in useless dead ends or gives you useless items.
On top of that, because the floors are way too big, the Nightmare would frequently spawn far away from you and be a complete non-issue. In contrast, when the floors are smaller, there's more chances that you meet the Nightmare which makes actually threatening as they should be.
>>
>>746492227
Either 1 (original) > 2 > 1 (Remake, included in 2) > Finale, or 1 (Remake) > 2 > 1 (Remake's Post game) > Finale.
The original version of 1 is kinda rough (shitty balancing, dungeons are way too big and empty, see my post here >>746497070) so I would recommend the remake instead, but if you still want to experience it you can still try it (the original version is on Vita and PC).
Another recommended order is to play 2 before 1 (Remake), but in my opinion the impact of 2's story and changes to it are lost if you didn't play 1 so I'd still recommend to play 1 first. However, the final post game's dungeon of as Remake must be played after finishing 2 (although you might need a clear save of 2 to even access it in the first place but I'm not 100% sure about that).

>tile dancing slop like grimrock
>technically action games like king's field, which would then evolve into skyrim and rollslop like dark souls

>i want a bunch of shit i don't care for or want
how is this not a genre label failure?

Its more the genre has a bunch of subgenres in it much like how theres many different versions of action games from shooters, soulslikes, classic stuff like DMC and NG, and others. I agree that DRPG is generally whats used here and works as its specific but its still a subgenre of 'dungeon crawler'. As much as I hate the term blobber does accurately describe the specific type of game even more than DRPG does.

I can’t into Megaten because I hate Pokemon mechanics. Are there any other similarly moody DRPGs to play?

"dungeon crawl" comes from table top rpgs and has always been vague
"blobber" is a silly label, but at least it's specific

The +50 to AGI alone is a huge deal

that still covers both grimrock tiledance slop and etrian (+ all other things you are likely thinking of as "DRPG/blobber") under the same umbrella

Its more youre asking for a genre label that doesnt exist and using exceptions to undermine a generalising term. Most people especially here know what someone means when they ask for a blobber most of the time and often even post additional information that either includes or excludes exceptions.

If you really want a proper label make one or try and enforce something like 'Etrian-likes' or something to the point others pick it up and it becomes commonly used. The genre is too small despite being somewhat diverse that it hasnt really developed a proper term despite its age.

yes
because i want to use "word" and not get westoid excrement thrown at me whenever i use it
>If you really want a proper label make one or try and enforce something like 'Etrian-likes' or something
because that worked so well for roguelikes and soulslikes, right?

Anon youre bitching at the the truth that I and other anons have given. The term doesnt fucking exist yet. What do you want us to do? If you want specific stuff you have to be explicit in your request as theres no shorthand for it. How do you think people asking for souls-likes felt before the term existed.

Go make a term then and try and force it into cultural relevance or hope one occurs despite it being unlikely given the genre being niche. Beyond that youre gonna have to suck it up and spend 5-10 seconds more typing specific details.

I got really into Etrian Odyssey and AI thought I had found a few favorite genre, so I gave Dungeon Travellers a try and found it unbelievably boring.
