To a lesser degree and very focused on only specific things like computers and a small number of environmental interactions. What's nice is that it's a game that is not afraid to let you miss stuff. It really is shitty the "Sequel" didn't carry on with that.

It'd be great to be a fairly weak 13th gen where your limited access to Disciplines still changes things pretty drastically. I always feel like Potence is underrated as a problem solving Discipline.

It's not an imsim at all. It's a traditional RPG just in first/third-person with realtime combat instead of isometric view turn-based combat.
Imsims rely on numerous game systems coming together to allow open-ended and unconventional solutions. Stuff like stacking crates to get over a fence gate instead of lockpicking/hacking it open. You can't really do that in VTMB, everything is a stat check, thus making it squarely an RPG.

Immersive Sim just isn't a very helpful genre name because it often doesn't really apply to a lot of the biggest games for which it's applied to. To me Immersive Sim is something at applies to SOMA, Voices of the Void or Iron Nest. The most important thing is simply that instead of pressing X when looking at something, you instead have to physically interacting with an actual button on the object, or physically place an object into another, use fire to heat an object by actually holding the object near the fire, refuel a car by physically pouring a jerry can in. Lots of games have at least some immersive sim element, what sets those that "Belong" in the genre apart is that they really lean into it for everything. Deus Ex is a great game but I think it's vastly overstated as an Immersive Sim game.

Bloodlines barely scratches the surface of that and only really in Santa Monica. It has things like interacting with computers, turning off a power switch to make someone come turn it back on, or moving boards and planks to reveal a potential entrance. But these are fairly limited.
>>
>>746535809
It's not an insim at all.
Really, it's just an action RPG. It's in the same broad category as Bethesda games, Witcher games and probably newer Assassins Creed games.

>>746537695
I oddly can't remember where it happens, but there's a place where you pull some flat sheet of wood away to open a hole in a wall you crawl through.
And I think in the Ocean House there's wood sheeting on a floor that you break and fall through, but that might be scripted to break by itself.

It's hard to capture the important things. VtMB was quite unplayable when it came out because Troika did not finish the endgame content properly so you got shafted if you played it with narrative heavy slant. Over the past 20 years Wesp and co corrected a good bit of their crap but the atmosphere was there from the beginning.

For example, there are quite a few indie Silent Hill and Resident Evil clones that are extremely competent imitations of original gameplay, and even superior QoL-wise to those games. For example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGoFjk7E8-k

Everything in this game is an excellent recreation of Silent Hill 2-3's mechanical aspects. They even made sure that it's as comfy to go through menus and possible. Good UX design. And completely soulless. Zero atmosphere. Not scary. But competent. I imagine a VtMB-like indie game would have a very faithful hub design, better weather system, more characters, better itineraries, superior combat and still leave you unphased.
>>
>>746544484
Makes sense if you wanna see the seduction lines because the correlated stats required to raise it exist exclusively *for* seduction, making it a heavy investment for literally 0 pay off.
Doing so for persuasion or intrimidation is just silly and unbalances the game. Which is fine if youre like, a skybaby that crys at any level of difficulty at all, but otherwise simply makes the game less enjoyable.
>>
>>746544767
That’s pretty much how it is with most modern TTRPG books. Shadowrun is also pretty egregious. Elves are supposed to be divinely beautiful creatures as a majority, but they always use art that’s clearly just a traced-over image of a dumpy Karen they have working in the HR department.
>>
>>746544767
The newest iteration of VtR (nugen VtM) leaked a little while ago and apparently theyre trying to take the DnD route of simplifying anything and everything they can (including the lore, which they are flanderizing or outright basterdizing as well) to appeal to the widest possible audience. A real kek, if you may.
>>
>>746544838
That argument falls flat when maxing persuasion still lets you finish the game simply through talking so adding seduction and intimidation to it does not make it easier.

>>
>>746544949
lol? persuasion does not let you finish the game via talking, so much so in fact that it is one of the most commonly talked about plights of a first save; investing in speech stats instead of combat stats thus making the end game literally unfinishable. Persuasion lets you skip some sections at best, but all of the major bosses and several long segments of enemies without access to blood remain. Stat investment is an important aspect of the game, objectively so. It isnt new vegas anon

I still think the clan has potential it's just utilized in the worse way possible because of how modern writers utilize their Contrarian culture. Celerity, Potence, and Presence are an incredibly good combination at almost any generation but the problem with the Brujah is that a lot of them are just picking up new ideas as a means of challenging whatever the Status quo is, which typically means groups are dominated by whatever new idea has popped into their heads.

At the same time I kind of dig it conceptually. From a hyper individualistic perspective any consolidation of powers into an individual or group is eventually going to turn sour and start being used to fuck with you. That includes the Anarchs whenever they start acting like a Social Club or start being too reliant on any one individual. The Brujah who think they're going to build something grand and magnificent by being Communists or Fascists or whatever are retarded. The smart ones are the true Anarchs who want to ride solo and know that they have to actively tear down everyone else or someday someone is going to come fuck with you in the name of their ideology.

Hey Frankenpatch dude,

So it turns out my idea of how to rework Histories was fucking dogshit. I've spent the past few days trying them out, and I realized that while I had some good ideas, I had made some serious critical errors. The first was removing the flavor Histories bring. Some of their ideas are jank, but that's what contributed to the soul of the game. So, I decided that instead of straight-up removing entire Histories, I should work on "balancing" the objectively bad ones. The second problem that I came across is that my way of approaching Histories was "railroading". I failed to appreciate that giving certain Clans bizarre backstories allows for repeated play-throughs with the same clan to have a fresh experience. The third problem was especially noticeable with the Disciplines-related Histories. Totally shutting down each Discipline that the player doesn't take a History in was a retarded idea... at least, to the degree that I did it. I learned the hard way that a heavily-nerfed Celerity AND Potence does NOT a fun a Brujah make.

Anyway, I've gone ahead and re-balanced (I think) the VANILLA Histories that DID NOT go unused. You can find them here, and there:

histories000.txt
https://pastes.io/adU8Jzz4

traiteffects000.txt (holy shit does this need some actual cleaning up what the fuck were the devs smoking leaving their doc like this on release)
https://pastebin.com/50RwQhD6

Right now, both Tremere and Ventrue look very deprived of Histories. I need to play with the changes I've made for vanilla Histories to see whether or not I have the brains to give them backstory options that aren't horribly unbalanced, aren't retarded, and fit the tone of the setting. If I realize that's beyond my abilities, then I'll just leave it as-is. I doubt this thread will survive the night, and it's less likely you'll even see my post, but oh, well. C'est la vie.

Eh. VtM always had the issue the modern game suffers from. It was always a joke. Bloodlines took the joke of it all and ran with it in a campy way. That's why it worked.
>>
>>746550894
Note, I mean the overly dramatic pissing contest issue. The modern writing getting super-serious with no capacity for chill or actual satire is a real fucking problem.
>>
>>746550894
"Campy" means "faggy", the word you want is "hammy". Regardless, NO, it's not that VtM (or, more broadly, WoD) was always a joke, it's that it was nearly impossible to find people in the 90s who understood where WoD's satire ended and realism began. The blurring of fantasy and reality is why Northern Europe has such a strong VtM LARP scene because Northern Europe is full of weirdos because the Danes killed all of the smart people and the Dutch imported ondermensen for banking and loaning purposes.

Oof. I tried using the last files but for some reason it just completely broke histories and nothing was showing up at all. I'm not sure why but these seem to be working now.

I can see how you might've had some issues with that. I remember for the Discipline ones that even the minor debuffs to some of them was enough to make them noticeably weaker but not useless. And yeah I do like some of the flavor histories add even if they're less "useful" compared to others.

I still liked the idea of having histories for more social characters to start off with some points in that. That seems a bit lacking in the default ones. I think part of the issue is that the minor stat swap histories don't alter gameplay much compared to some others so it makes them feel uninteresting even if the backstory itself is interesting. Maybe you could give some of those extra bonus stats to start off with along with the swap? This way it actually feels like it makes more of a difference and has a more noticeable impact on gameplay. For example, the Voyeur Website Model history does SPM for stats but maybe it could also give a bonus point to Appearance?

Just guessing at what might help because I do still think some of the histories could be improved but it mainly feels like it's the stat swapping ones which seem the least interesting. The Discipline ones can be alright if you just want to focus on combat and some of the other ones that do alter gameplay a bit in other ways seem okay. Though I'd still like to see more histories that noticeably alter gameplay somehow in special ways. I think you can do a bit more with histories if you get into using Python, then you might be able to start making them have some more noticeable effects that way instead of just stat modifiers. But that's a bit more complicated of a mod project and the included ones still need some fixes.

>>
>>746535453

>>
>>746554289
I’m not sure yet that it’s the best idea to give bonuses to stat swaps. I agree they feel the weakest, but I’m hoping that the changes I made to all of the histories makes them more viable. Using Voyeur as an example: Female Brujah can use it to easily get Persuasion 4 (Charisma 3, Scholarship 1) with no further investment nor penalties (which means they can save Tourette), and also get Intimidate/Seduction 4 (either to rob the unnamed man outside of the apartments blind or turn him into a blood doll). What I’m trying to say is that stat swaps allow for a better early-game to suit a player’s specific interests without a long-term penalty. Using another female Brujah example, I gave Hard-Ass Chica bonus dots to Perception, Firearms, and Dodge (40 free XP) with penalties to Knowledges (40 more XP total). This allows for a stronger ranged combat character early (potentially Ranged Combat 5, Defense 5, Stamina 3), but she’ll struggle to get Haggling for bullets, Computers for hacking, and Scholarship for free abilities. If she stat-swaps to MPS or STK, she would still get Ranged Combat 5, Defense 4, Stamina 2 OR Ranged Combat 5, Defense 3, Stamina 3. It’s a similar start, but without the long-term penalty, and even Chica can avoid the penalty if she focuses on Disciplines sooner rather than worrying about Knowedges.

This is all on paper, of course. It needs play testing.
>>
>>746555945
>What I’m trying to say is that stat swaps allow for a better early-game to suit a player’s specific interests without a long-term penalty.
I see what you mean. I was mostly thinking about it on its own but when combined with different TSK choices it does end up making a pretty different character than default is able to do. I'll have to look into that more next time I play.

>Using another female Brujah example, I gave Hard-Ass Chica bonus dots to Perception, Firearms, and Dodge (40 free XP) with penalties to Knowledges (40 more XP total).
This makes a bit more sense now as the bigger bonuses come with bigger downsides though the vanilla version of just one free point in Firearms and starting with a .38 didn't feel like a good tradeoff for requiring more XP on Knowledges. An issue I might see though is that you could just take Academic instead and start almost as strong without the XP penalty on Knowledges. But that's just powergaming which probably shouldn't be as much of a consideration over the roleplaying aspect and whether all the choices are just fun or not.
