>The 30-day in-game timer must be respected, and if you wish to achieve a proper ending to the game, you must complete it within this temporal framework. Time does not flow in, well, real time, but is instead divided into slots — eight for the day and eight for the night, or 16 total for each in-game day.
>This opens the game up to tremendous replayability: you won’t be able to complete all quests in time, nor will you have the chance to unlock every ability and passive in time, nor can you clear all side content and have enough time to spare. Quests also unfold differently if you spend too many slots while having them in your journal, meaning some things must be completed as soon as possible to avoid possibly dire consequences.
>Furthermore, some things can only be done at night and some during the day, meaning the game state is drastically altered depending on the time of day. I loved how this mechanic constantly kept shifting my gameplay around, from methodical and slow to chaotic and brutal. It was constantly fresh, and since I balanced out how long I spent in each, I was always excited to become a human or a vrakhir again.

Reviews are pointless since all games get a score of either 7, 8, 9 or 10. I usually decide on whether to buy a game by watching streamers play it. It gives a more clear view over an arbitrary score.

>Let's start with the open world, which is lovely to look at, but annoyingly empty. There's just nothing of interest going on between locations, and so it's no wonder that you can unlock traversal abilities to cover ground faster. Dawnwalker's action is beyond repetitive. The game's direction-based system works well in concept, as Coen can attack or defend from different angles to open his opponents up — think Kingdom Come: Deliverance and you're on the right track — but said system simply never evolves.
Once you've got the timing down, and you've learned to read your foe's intentions — which isn't difficult, considering the severe lack of enemy types — you'll be going through the exact same motions for the next 35 hours. Admittedly, it was quite funny to see the last boss die in just three sword swings, but come on — there needs to be a better balance at play here. As it stands, you spend tens of hours hitting foes with what feels like a wet noodle, only to become grossly overpowered for the last five percent of the game.

Name 1 thing wrong with wanting to extract and consume the maximum amount of narrative content out of a game
>>
>>746584717
Extremely annoying.
1/3 of your skill tree stops working at night, another 1/3 stops working during the day. Advance time a bit and now suddenly it's day and all the points you put into vampirism stop working including the ones required to gain access to specific locations.
Worst part is that learning abilities costs time for some ungodly reason so you end up running around with unassigned skill points.
>>
>>746585354
We got a Skyrim baby here
>>
>Tendies upset
It's a game about scary vampires, violence and shit. It's not even for you.

I'll give it a shot though since I pirated Crimson Desert and found out it was a hilarious piece of trash. Hopefully this "M-rated open world rpg" is better
>>
>>746585185
You're treating it like a checklist and not an RPG with branching paths and choices. You literally cannot see all narrative outcomes in a game with mutually exclusive paths.
>>
>>746585354
>ungodly reason so you end up running around with unassigned skill points.
the reviewers literally wrote that it wasn't needed
you can assign points and do most if not all the content in the game
>>
>>746585536
If the time mechanic isn't needed why is it there and why is it integrated into everything you do?
>>
>>746577369
It's baffling to me that they decided to tie the skill tree to time advancing. Whoever thought that up should get their fucking head checked

>>

I like it in dead rising and the pathologic games. But I think what helps is that the time loop is much shorter and the games are meant to be replayed easily, with a 50+ hour RPG it's harder to accept a timer because people will be worried about miscalculating and being softlocked after dozens of hours
>>

Honestly they were too honest and upfront with the timer.
Fallout 1 doesn't constantly remind you that you are on a timer.
Neither should Dawnwalker. You apparently have plenty of time to do quests.
But the fact that every action ticks away from that timer only has the effect of putting the player at unease.
Should have just had a traditional timer that you can occasionally check in a menu or something.
>>
The time mechanics remind me a bit of Way of the Samurai but that game is much shorter and a roguelite in a way, so replaying isn't much of a bother. Doing that in a game so long sounds bothersome, doubly so with learning skills and side content being tied to it too.

I don't know. I guess they wanted to throw a bone. But much like in CDPR's Cyberpunk 2077. Marat's questline/romance is less developed than Lacra's and Anca's. Go figure.

Not a good comparison since they made the most popular girl in CP2077 a dyke.

Yes. You can sleep with all of the options available in a single playthrough. There's no consequence if you do.
>>
>>746600340
Panam still had the most content out of all the romance options. Judy had a fair bit too and she was popular. But with her being a lesbian a lot of guys played with fem V. So it wasn't that much of a trade off. Whereas with Kerry, he had the least amount of content out of all options. Second being River. They are not involved in the main story. And you can miss Kerry completely if you choose not to let Johnny take control.

When the "content" is arbitrarily locked behind a time limit then yeah. This isn't Majora's Mask or Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter. It's a shit mechanic where you lose in-game days by leveling up.

Not even the Pathologic games did anything like this.

>in order to get the best ending and do the most side quests to completion you're encouraged to literally never level up your skills and are actively punished for making the gameplay more interesting by having less game to play
>the maximum amount of side quest completion and "best" ending state is locked behind literally never spending skill points at all
who the ever loving fuck decided this was an acceptable system
If anything from a game design perspective wouldn't it make more sense to do it the other way around and let you buy a few more days of time as a retard for having X skill to encourage leveling up and exploring? Like say narratively you need to go from A to B and this consumes time but if you're a chad vampire you can just fly there as a cloud of bats and that doesn't consume a time point enabling you to do one more quest before running out. Simple shit like that. This is not the first game with a time limit or limited number of actions you're allowed to take before "running out" but it's the first I've seen that punishes leveling up your skills instead of rewarding it.

You don't need the calendar to incentivize that, all you need are meaningful choices and consequences (which according to reviews this game does have, which makes the timer system even more odd). I've played Witcher 3, KCD1-2, DAO, BG3, Mass Effect 1-3, Cyberpunk, etc. multiple times, none of those games have a timer. In fact the only big RPG I've liked and *haven't* done a repeat playthrough for is Metaphor Refantazio, which, probably not coincidentally, also has a calendar system. I'm just fundamentally really not a fan of this type of mechanic in games.

With these story, characters and immersion first games I feel like they need to move on from decades old dnd game tropes
Your cloth pantaloons dont have stats, they're pants. You dont have a talent tree irl, you learn stuff by doing the thing with the guidance of a teacher.
Even with Disco elysium you had fun interactions where a specific cloth item had diegetic elemtens where thick gloves can work better for a task and not having them gives - 1 health damage. Copy that.

Witcher 3 specially had the issue where you're going around town chasing wild animals with a sword. Sometimes a sword is not the best tool for animal handling.
