I get that the astromech advantage skill is technically very strong, but man, until the end where it gives 2 AP for 6 adv. (btw great job having AP for your moves & skills, and Advantage Points which you'd also abbreviate as AP) it's just awkward as hell to use. SPECIALLY at the start when it costs 10 advantage. "Oh hey, half my operators still have 3 AP, and they're in good positions.. Either I overcap advantage by letting them shoot, or I overcap AP by using the ability now". Also, since it's an advantage skill, you more often than not find yourself using it after using your characters skills, and for the majority of the game, getting 1 AP back is.. nothing. I don't use pistols, I need 2 AP to shoot anything, I'm sure it's possible to do good things with it early game, but so far it's kinda my least impactful advantage skill until I can max it out.

I might take pistol on some classes if it had something like: "Your first blue movement each round costs no AP" landing 3 shots with a pistol is not terrible damage, sure. But as soon as you need to move it really eats at your damage. If I need to do a 2 Ap move (and you often have to), I'd rather have a rifle shot after that for 1 AP, than a pistol shot.
Repeater would work if it behaved like a machine gun in the previous games

I know this game isn't xcom, but I feel like everything that is different from xcom, is changed for the worse. Starting with 4 vs 6 man squads. This is, I think, a much bigger deal than people think. Because the best way to experiment with new squad members, or try out new units, is to have a "core" team of 3 or 4 soldiers that you know can "carry" when you take 2 rookies. It's generally a bad tactical decision to sub out half your entire team, let alone 3 quarters of it. That leads to the fact that you have usually at most 1 slot, to try any of the 28 possible class combinations + uniques. But let's be real here, there's a Jedi, a Mandalorian, an Astromech and buffed up trick, the only standard dual class combo you're gonna take, almost ever is Hawke. If we had 6 slots, you'd have a better chance of bringing some actual hired soldiers. And this also brings us to the "people don't die enough" problem. Losing a soldier sucks. But in Zero Company, if you have any skill in turn based tactical, you have got to actually try to lose a soldier. Which feeds into the "no rotation of soldiers" problem. Your guys never die, so you never take rookies. With missions getting progressively harder you never feel like "ah, I can take some chaff on this, it'll be fine". And I get it. You put characters that have story missions as soldiers. Losing them and thus missing out on story missions fucking sucks. (that's why story missions should be relegated to hub NPCs, and not soldiers and give upgrades you can use on anyone)>the ability to re-specI'm an eternal re-spec defender in diablo style games, but in Xcom, it kinda sucks to re-spec for free. Re-spec should be an expensive bacta tank style upgrade. If instead of having Jae, we'd have random soldiers that could roll Jae's execute ability, and you couldn't re-roll it, that would be far more interesting.

Fixed rolled class, fixed rolled second class. Roll a sharpshooter scoundrel? Score, that works great. Heavy medic? Maybe not such a great combo. How do I build Cly? I tried her out right after getting her and the pistol was really not doing it for me. Is it just a case of actually upgrading her bonds? Do I swap the pistol out for a rifle? Is she better with a repeater if she uses Adv for everything?

>>746595807I think it makes sense for the game as it is. You have 4x3 AP each turn, the same total as 6x2 you get in XOM, but you also have call for backup and a bunch of extra advantage abilities. Having 6 characters would make alpha striking too easy and require (even more) hp bloat and reinforcement spam. You can make it work with interwoven turns, but then you lose some of the synergy plays you can make.Though I would have liked to see a couple missions that you were allowed to have 6 operators and were designed for it, like siege defense missions where you naturally have to split the team to cover multiple approaches.

Ayye is mind-boosting/manipulating something? Don't take out the empowered target, go for the Ayye controlling it, but be careful if you run after it you might activate extra pods. Berserker responds to attacks? Don't melee it, attack it with someone pulling it left, then attack it with someone pulling it right, leaving it as stranded as possible. Cyberdisk? Don't stack units or you'll get to know what your grenades taste like. Chryssalid map? Rescue the civilians fast, so that you don't get overrun by the fuckers, don't do it too fast, or you might get fucked in the ass by clayface. What does Zero Company have? Resonance stacks. If you kill a dude, the next dude gets empowered. Over and over again. What can you do against it? How about a big fat nothing? Did you guys change Jae's class? I love the 20 free damage from executes each round, but I'm not sure assault is where she really shines. Although it has a first move buff, which helps bringing her into position for the execute.
I'm pissed EA rushed this out the door, it feels so unfinished. Half the cutscenes just randomly start or end, the game feels really short, and lots of weird bugs and just general jank too. I hope it gets a sequel because it feels like one of those games where the sequel feels like the 1.0 complete version. That would be fine if it didn't take 7 years to make a game these days.
