Well, Konami did by having silent hill 2 be the end-all of the series to the point if you’ve played 2 you’ve played 80% of the entire series catalogue. It should’ve died with 4, which had a brilliant story that called to and from all prior entries as a swan song goodbye. Claudia’s backup didn’t work - the fucking end. Instead we got revisionist bullshit with “the order” and the frenchmans other world.

Because every single western made SH after had to include some elements of SH2 and did so in a very shit way. All because these people worshiped SH2 too much at the expense of making unique new entries in the series that could have been improvements on the real core themes this series used to or should have always been about. Such as the town, its power, fog, otherworlds, and yeah even the cult itself.What ended up happening though is more and more psychological garbage that was done so haphazardly by people and teams that had no right making such games to begin with. And what I always took from the games outside of SH2 was that all those monster manifestations was the Alyssa characters mind projecting them. As well as some of it just being spooky otherworld manifestations which seemingly was true in the case of SH3 with Valtiel. It was a demon completely separated from any one person "manifesting it with their mind powers" basically. But damn did this series and the fans take the whole psychological horror thing and ran it so deep into the ground. To this day the games do this. Even the more recent SH f did. It also should come as no surprise this fanbase is also full of leftist types and pompous snobs into art.
