The "light' greatswords are variety for the sake of variety that ruins variety. You no longer have to choose between dps or burst, you get both in spades and without the drawbacks of either.
>>746615323LGS are slower than curved swords and thrusting swords on the initial swing, which is particularly bad for them because despite that slowness, they can't stunlock anything. Because they can't make large enemies flinch with anything but a charged R2. Even guard counters don't flinch knights/omens/etc. They're honestly not as good as they look. Usually you're better going for a curved sword, a longsword, or a greatsword. Light Greatswords are mostly for PVP.
>>746615323Unga bunga ultra greatsword is still my weaponfu and I will unga bunga ultra greatsmash any smaller weapons.
>>746615323It's a single player game. Pvp is garbage. It looks cool and feels good to use therefore it wins by rule of cool.
>You no longer have to choose between dps or burstLight greatswords excel at neither, their AR is a middle of the road between straight sword and greatswords without the advantages of either, the moveset has a nice variety of thrusting and wide horizontal sweeps but it's also slow as shit and even more prone to wall bounces in tight environment, powerstance also sucks compared to powerstanced straight swords, which are straight up faster and with better pokes, or powerstanced greatswords, which hurt a lot more per single strike.Wing Stance is also a mixed bag, under optimal conditions a R1 into R2 combo can net really high damage, and the R2 can jump over some stuff if timed correctly, but when push comes to shove it's still wholly inferior to Square Off in terms of efficiency and lacks the reliable burst options of things like the Regalia of Eochaid/Marais Execution Sword, the trading and rally properties of Stamp: Swing or the minmaxing setup of Leontiel's GS.And mind you this is just talking about straight swords and greatswords, if we look at things like curved swords/GCS or thrusting swords there's a whole other can of worms. The big issue LGS have is that outside of the admittedly pretty moveset they're fairly impractical in PvE and only shine for the rollcatching in PvP, where they have to compete with many other great rollcatching options that sorely outcompete them in either range or sustained aggression, they can't trade well, there's only one unique ash of war which is also not all that great, their guard counters are kinda ass and even with multiple hit setups they're outpaced by other options. So to reiterate: they're okay, they don't really steal anyone's thunder and are clearly more of a proof of concept for future titles together with the other SoTE weapon types.
>>746615323LGS have no impact, don't interrupt many enemies, and aren't great at stance-breaking enemies. Stance-breaking is important as it allows you to control the flow of battle. LGS are basically daggers but with a different moveset and longer reach.
is dual LGS good?
basic longsword mogs them completely
>>746617332>can't make large enemies flinch with anything but a charged Rare you sure it needs to be charged. just tapping R2 does more poise damage than a regular R1 but comes out almost as fast, thats how i interrupt malenia with daggers.
>>746620060>Standard L1 chainToo slow to be good, also zero stagger which is pretty bad given how slow it is, but it has a lot of very wide swings which is pretty nice for dealing with trash ganks>Jumping L1Lacks range and damage>Crouching L1Actually fairly good because it's a very quick double hit, the saving grace of the powerstanced moveset>Running L1Decent but again, no fucking stagger>Backstep L1You're basically asking to lose a trade with this, don't use this
>>746620295Guess I'll have to try the new curved greatsword then instead.
>>746615323what do you mean, lgs is the definition of style over substance. as far as dex weapons go, powerstanced straight swords, backhand blades or curved swords outclass. I'd take an offhand cleanrot sword if I wanted pokes. it's a fun and pretty moveset, but people calling idus start op are out of their mind.
>>746615323They aren’t even good without wing stance
>>746620287Malenia can be flinched with almost everything as a balancing feature. But for LGSs, regarding what I was talking about, it has to be charged. This chart covers something called 'Damage Level', which is a yes/no check on whether you'll make something flinch/interrupt their animation. This is not the same as stance damage. You can't just hit something a bunch of times with a lower level to equal one hit from a higher level. Its a straight yes or no check for a given attack. Level 2 is what you need to stagger things like Knights. Light Greatswords only get that on charged R2s. Level 0 doesn't interrupt anything, level 1 interrupts the animations of grunt enemies, level 3 can knock things down, level 4 makes things fly away, level 5 can interrupt hyperarmor to cause a flinch I think, level 6 is the pancake effect, level 7 is another type of knockdown, level 9 makes things fly in the air. Level 8 can cause interrupts but just for specific enemies. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1j4bpTbsnp5Xsgw9TP2xv6d8R4qk0ErpE9r_5LGIDraU/edit?gid=1682878761#gid=1682878761Its fairly interesting to look at, actually.
>>746621256Whoops, level 3 doesn't knock things down, it just gives you a long interruption.
>>746621256It's surprising the number of people who don't know what damage level is and why it makes weapons like the Guardian Swordspear inferior to other weapons in its weapon class.
>>746615323Wrong. Light greatswords don't stagger for shit, and deal less stance damage than even regular greatswords. There are a ton of enemies and bosses that are terrible MUs for the LGS because their light attacks>don't stagger>don't deal a lot of damageand their heavy attacks>also don't fucking stagger>take too long, leading you to get counterattacked because you don't staggerDumbass opinion.
>>746615323Lgs can lock you in a long multihit animation if you're not paying close enough attention. It also requires an r2 to hitstun human sized enemies. It's pretty much supreme for sword and board, but outclassed 2h or powerstanced
>>746621434Why the fuck would anyone know this? The game doesn't explain it, and it's not necessary to know to beat it.>it's surprisingNo, it's fucking not unless you're treating this single player game as a competitive game. Which is laughable considering it has less depth than the simplest fighting game.
>>746621846It isn't necessary to know, but it's useful knowledge and something you can only learn from thorough weapon testing and extensive knowledge of mechanics of the game. When I first read about damage level a few years ago, I immediately knew what it was talking about because it's something I experienced myself, I just didn't have anything solid to call it.
>>746621940Is it useful for someone who doesn't plan to pvp?
>>746622080Yeah, damage level is important to know because it helps you understand which attacks from which weapon classes stagger certain enemies at varying times, and which weapons within certain classes have "special" damage levels that are different from their class's usual damage levels.
>>746622138Could you give me an example? Honestly I tend to just use big weapon that makes enemies stagger often. I don't have to use my brain for that. I've played dumbass strength build in almost every From game.
>>746615323They do an ass load of stagger with charged r2’s but basically no stagger on anything else besides ashes of war
>>746622190I gave an example earlier, but Guardian Swordspear is a Halberd that has 1 lower damage level than normal Halberds, which will lead to its light attacks not staggering something like Omen, while its other class counterparts light attacks will. It could mean the difference between getting killed or not, and it often makes the game harder when you don't know these things. A big part of souls games playability is predicting how enemies will react to your attacks. You need information like this to aid in these predictions. If you're going for big weapons, greataxes are all the same damage level. Go try and find the Executioner's Greataxe off a skeleton holding it in Caelid near the church Millicent is at.
>>746621256>Poleblade of the Bub also does arbitrarily less stagger damage while already being one of the more mediocre DLC weapons upfront stat wiseFrom's balancing of weapons is so bizarre when you look at the details.
>>746622557The angled \+/ swinging halberds get fucked like that for some reason. I don't know the logic for it, really.
>>746622557Usually it's balanced by scaling or other effects. In the case of Guardian Swordspear, it achieves some of the highest dex scaling in the entire game.
>>746615323In retrospect, all the RPG-slop of FromSoftware are garbage: Dark Souls 1, Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3 and especially Elden DOGSHIT Ring.Demon's Souls gets a pass for being the foundation of "modern" FromSoftware. The only truly good games that "modern" FromSoftware has ever made are Bloodborne, Sekiro, Armored Core VI and The Duskbloods: all games that significantly reduced the RPG-slop elements or abandoned them completely.
>>746622371I see. Something to consider then. rip swordspear. That weapon seemed neat.

>>746622775Personally, I don't like the (two handed) R1 chain animations either. You can be right in front of a small enemy and whiff because of its diagonal slices. People say it's better 1-handed or powerstanced, but I personally don't engage in powerstancing, and I like using most large weapons two-handed.
>>746615323light greatswords are dogshit bro, did you even play the game?
>>746619045This
>>746615323LGS has a sexy moveset and that's what I care about most
>light>anythingFuck that, we facetank in this house
not gonna bother quoting every post that talks about staggering but staggering really doesn't matter as much as you think it does
>>746623207Why doesn't it
>>746622775its not that big of a deal. if you need to flinch something you can just use a weapon art. swordspear is still good because its fast
>>746623207It matters a lot actually. Being able to interrupt attacks lets you control the flow of battle. Daggers are literally hard mode in most cases. Try fighting those Gladiator motherfuckers with a dagger vs fighting him with a greataxe.
successive attack build while 2 handing light greatsword seems promising.
I love LGS because the movesets beautiful and theyre fun to use but its a very mediocre weapon and when it comes to raw performance other classes are way better.Anyway heres me beating consort radahn when the dlc was new with milady on NG+https://youtu.be/k5JgkdEuU30?is=LF_-Ujg53PmQitnW
