What makes this especially significant is the speed. Most VNs could apparently be translated in 3–5ish days with no editors or proofreading. I've worked professionally as a translator for 10 years, and when comparing these outputs with several other professional translators, we had to scrutinize the Japanese closely to find many of the meaningful flaws. That distinction matters. Something like "endless meadows" instead of "endless plains" is technically a mistake, but is unlikely to affect the average reader's experience. Translators naturally focus on these details because we are trained to notice them; most readers simply want an accurate, coherent and enjoyable story. Compare this to MTL around 2015, when errors were so frequent and severe that even non translators could immediately tell something was wrong. Today most of the criticism requires professional level side by side analysis.And Sol isn't even a translation-specific model. It is a general purpose model. If models continue improving and translation specific systems receive significant investment, the gap may become much harder for human translators to defend. Whether AI eventually reaches a ceiling is impossible to know honestly, but the current trajectory is difficult to ignore. Raw LLM output produced in days and without human editing, is already approaching the quality of translations people have been reading for years. The current Markov chains used to produce this are incomprehensively complex yet it keeps improving?
