Why is Resident Evil the only horror franchise with good pacing? Silent Hill, Dead Space, etc are all paced like shit. They don't understand safe rooms (with calming music) exist for a reason.
I love the RE series with me whole heart but I feel like most of these games stumble in the later acts. It's still a goated series but usually the latter areas aren't as memorable as the early ones.
>>746619337because the later acts is filler
>>746619337because the team creates a great experience and then the boss says the game needs to be 4 hours longer, you have three months
>>746619337I thought 4 Remake’s Island section was an exception to that, especially with the Regenerator encounters being much more tense makes it more enjoyable to replay than the OG.
>>746619123Silent Hill 1-3 are excellent games. I don't know what the hell you are talking about. SH4 was also good and had its safe room (the apartment) be exactly what you claim to want for the first half of the game. Then it subverts your expectation halfway into the game. This wasn't bad this was genius game design for a survival horror game. It made SH4 a lot more memorable for it. The one you do have a point here with is Dead Space. That game had some good atmosphere but I think they way overdid it on the action and making the player character feel powerful. Not only are these necromorphs a bunch of pinatas but you can also slow them down and use your telekinesis whenever shooting the damn things isn't enough. Dead Space is a lot more action horror than even RE4 was. So SH games had great pacing, Dead Space was more like an action game with a horror setting.
>>746619123I don't get where you're coming from. Most horror games have safe areas and ease the tension at times, Silent Hill included. The ones that don't still aren't necessarily poorly-paced.>>746619337Yeah, that's true of almost every entry. Late in the game there's generally little need for any more resource management, the areas tend to become more linear, and the environments often shift from more grounded "real-world" locations to a giant bio-lab or something.>>746621461Even in the original my only significant complaint with the island is that I don't like the aesthetics as much as the village or castle.
>complains about horror while posting a gallery shooterThe first two Fatal Frame games and the first Silent Hill all have excellent pacing.
>>746619337RE3 had even better later areas. Ironically to since the exploration of racoon city should have been kino but it wasn't as good as it was likely due to limitations of the console at the time.
>>746623274Shut the fuck up.
>>746622880Pacing issues is completely different from what you're talking about honestly, OP isn't talking about how scary the games are, he's talking about how Silent Hill and Dead Space are missing those calm moments before the storm which Resident Evil's trademark save rooms have always provided.>I think they way overdid it on the action and making the player character feel powerful.I completely disagree with that especially if you play on the hardest difficulties. The gunplay and overall controls are undoubtedly smoother than RE4, but enemies and combat are made faster paced to compensate, same with RE4R. Tbh I detest this mentality this board has that difficulty means horror except for all those other difficult games that anons would never argue are horror just because of how difficult they are but I digress. Point is while you're certainly powerful in Dead Space and RE4 especially if you're just really good at them you aren't Hugo Martin Doomslayer levels of powerful.>you can also slow them downTo be fair stasis (slowing down things) is a finite resource. In the original game you could only replenish it with stasis packs and recharge stations that are usually only near areas that forces you to use stasis to actually progress like slowing down malfunctioning doorsFrom the second game on it would automatically replenish one bar at a time over time, usually a few minutes unless you wore the Advanced Suit which cut the time in half, and stasis packs and stations, but it's justified because the combat is overall faster paced and you deal with more gaunlets overall than the first game.>and use your telekinesis whenever shooting the damn things isn't enough. You can infinitely as long as there are necromorph blades from dead bodies or steel poles or explosive cannisters within your reach, but it's faster and safer to just shoot since you can only throw one at a time and other than cannisters which are very rare they deal less damage than your weapons do.
>>746619123>good pacing The 2nd half of almost every game is a horrible slog they frontload everything. Love the series anyway.
>>746619123Dead Space 2 is better than RE4 and has much better pacing. The castle and the island both suck.
>>746619123The only problem with the pacing of Dead Space is thy reveal the necromorphs and jump you into the action way too early in the game. There should have been more down time in the beginning building up to the reveal of spooky necromorphs. Other than that, it's fine. It's a relentless ramping-up of tension. Every moment of victory comes with a new urgent problem that needs to be fixed, it never lets you relax. It's supposed to unnerving and uncomfortable. That's the intention.
Is this the thread? I really recommend Cronos New Dawn to all anons.
>>746624989>Dead Space 2 is better than RE4 and has much better pacingNo it fucking doesn't. Dead Space as a franchise has abysmal pacing and is the reason why it died. >>746624992>It's a relentless ramping-up of tension. And that's the damn problem. Never-ending build up sucks ass and is tiring. The fact almost nobody consciously realizes this is utterly baffling.
>>746625295>Dead Space died because of pacingIt died because of EA>And that's the problem>It's too scary for meShut up, pussy
>>746624992except that makes it more of an action game than a horror game. there's no buildup, no expectation of some new or existing threat to wreck shit, no quiet exploration with a spooky sound sound spike, no gaslighting the audience, no time for disturbing lore to bring you into focus on how unsettling it all actually is. you get your plasma cutter, you start gunning the screaming meatworld aliens down, and you keep doing that until the end. that being said, i still enjoyed it for all the action and macabre aesthetic, and it does give SOME cosmic horror vibes, but it wasn't really a horror game. see RE9. leon's sections aren't horror anymore than deadspace is, but playing as Grace on insanity difficulty, the girl actually managed to spook me a few times without overstaying her welcome, along with some tension in the same vein as Mr X, with her stomping around looking for you, whereas aliens jumping out of vents for the millionth time doesn't demand anything but more gun and shooty action. only time DS even startled or surprised me was when a necro slapped me on the ass when i was in the shop, and after that i was prepared for them to do that.
>>746626029 (me)oh yeah, and i guess the pinchy squirmy things got me a few times too, but then judicious application of the force gun turned them into a non-threat.
>>746625103Thanks anon. I asked in the Dead Space thread but didn't get a reply yet. I'm watching a video on it now. It looks quite good.
>>746626029Pretty much everything you've said about Dead Space makes me think you never actually played the game and pacing has nothing to do with what genre something is.
>>746619123because they studied alone in the dark before making the game, and what not to do , since alone in the dark got everything wrong
>>746626584i played it, but it wasn't scary. there was no tension, i wasn't spooked, only mildly startled a couple times. therefore, perhaps subjectively, not a horror game anymore than doom 2016 is. if it were paced similarly to silent hill 2, where you have long sections to do a puzzle, explore and listen to the OST, and get lead by the nose right into a jump scare or otherwise unsettled feeling, that's horror game pacing. that didn't really exist in dead space, so again, not horror. to clarify, i'm going off of a recent playthrough of the remake and i barely remember my time with the original, so take that as you will.
>>746619123Resident evil is a cod of of horror
>>746626584Brother, Dead Space is literally nothing but jumpscares. Normal encounters don't exist, every single one is a monster closet jumpscare action romp. It's even worse in the remake, since it got rid of the few calm areas the original had.
>>746626894>but it wasn't scary. there was no tension, i wasn't spookedAlright, I see you're autistic now especially with the peculiar way you write. You think horror means whatever you think is scary according to your own personal tastes because you think the world revolves around (You), but you're also clearly incapable of understanding what the difference is between your personal feelings and developer intent. If you can't perceive horror without having to feel it first then I think that's more of a personal issue because genres don't work like that, otherwise comedy wouldn't be a genre either. Dead Space doesn't stop being horror just because a random 4chan autist doesn't perceive them as being scary, otherwise the genre wouldn't exist because there will always be someone who doesn't think the scariest horror game you can think of is scary at all. And there's plenty of tension building in Dead Space, for example you never know when enemies are going to pop out of the vents, sometimes they do sometimes they don't, you're not literally shooting non-stop from beginning to end. It's obvious you didn't play it.> if it were paced similarly to silent hill 2, where you have long sections to do a puzzle, explore and listen to the OST, and get lead by the nose right into a jump scare or otherwise unsettled feeling, that's horror game pacing. No, it's not, pacing has nothing to do with genre, and you're comparing completely different subgenres and game genres now. SH2 is a survival horror, Dead Space isn't it's a TPS horror. SH2 is a slow burn psychological horror, Dead Space is an action horror with psychological horror elements. There are fast paced and slow paced any genre, even action.
>>746627623>Brother, Dead Space is literally nothing but jumpscares.I don't think it counts as a jump scare every time monsters pop out of the vents, but even if they do, how does that not make it horror? Because it's predictable? It isn't, there are plenty of vents where no monster ever pops out of, but you don't know that for a first blind playthrough.
>>746627654well i'm actually a cave dwelling shut in who is unacclimated to writing for others, so i do it poorly. autist works i suppose. anyways, all i'm saying is, there's no sense of imminent threat because you're constantly shooting, constantly looking for a threat that soon finds you, and you always have an answer for that threat. at that point, any on rails shooter is a horror game. the only difference is that dead space makes you look at gross shit while you do it, but that in and of itself does not a horror game make. because: it's not scary, it just looks like it should be. but that's okay, because i still liked it as an action game.
>>746623541>exploration of racoon city should have been kino but it wasn't as good as it was likely due to limitations of the console at the time.God I wish they remade 2 and 3 in the same way they remade 1. 2 remake is at least a good game
>>746619123RE4R base game's pacing is terrible though. Each "arena" lasts for too long, each part overstays its welcome. Ada's campaign is better.
>>746628107>there's no sense of imminent threat because you're constantly shooting,No, that's not how that works at all dear lord. What you're talking about is a perceived lack of suspense which you're confusing with pacing. There's suspense and exploration and puzzle solving and audio logs with lore you can pick up everywhere in the Dead Space games, you don't mindlessly shoot all the time in any of the first two games no matter how many times you claim it liar, but for the sake of argument, let's say you're right, you can still have tension without the suspense part. The tension in horror games like Dead Space, Silent Hill, Resident Evil etc. come from a mixture of controls, sound design which includes choice of music, atmosphere and even how the camera works. You can listen to interviews from the RE4 devs where they talked about why they kept the tank controls and why the camera is so close behind Leon at all times and you can then apply that same logic to Isaac who also has more restrained mobility hence quick turning still being a thing. The idea is that the tension comes from never being quite sure whether or not an enemy will suddenly creep up on you from your blindspots and jump you which is no different from how it was in fixed camera games except you were nearly always sure they were somewhere in front of you even if just out of frame due to how the levels and camera were designed. In RE4 like Dead Space the games are designed so that enemies can theoretically come from anywhere and that's a major part of how the tension is made to work as horror in conjunction with the increased focus on action and faster pacing. Essentially they're just taking concepts from classic survival horror and expanding on them to better fit an action/shooter horror mold. There are so many different ways you can do horror, but you want to limit it to being only this formulaic garbage because you only care about yourself.
>>746628107>constantly looking for a threat that soon finds you, and you always have an answer for that threat. And that’s different from Silent Hill how exactly? You’re applying double standards here, Isaac isn’t anymore powerful than your average Silent Hill protagonist where ammo management matters even less due to your just as powerful melee weapons. Survival horror is an offshoot of the action adventure genre with weak fodder enemies and strong bosses because that’s how action adventure game design works. It’s been like this since the original AitD where enemies were only hard because of the shit controls and hit boxes and how easily you could get stunlocked to death.>the only difference is that dead space makes you look at gross shit while you do it,Your entire argument basically boils down to only using hyperboles, oversimplifying everything because you don't actually understand what you're talking about, cherrypicking, constant comparisons between similar but ultimately still different things, and taking everything out of context. You're arguing on the level of a child which doesn't surprise me in the least.>because: it's not scary,It's trying to be, nothing you say will ever change that fact. Dead Space was always intended to be a horror game and I'd say they succeeded pretty well in that. You don't even have any counter to any of the valid points I'm making, you're arguing purely from an emotional standpoint and contradicting yourself over and over. There is no consistent logic to anything you're saying other than confusing personal tastes with objective reality, which is classic autistic/narcissistic behavior. I don't understand how you can be into horror while totally lacking empathy if getting scared is really all you care about.
>>746619123>putting zoomer third person shooter slop like Dead Space even in the same sentence with RE and SHBrilliant b8 m8.SH1 especially has top tier pacing, and it's one of the most replayable games ever made, alongside with OG REs.>>746624989All DS games suck donkey dick. They were boring 20 years ago, and they are boring and predictable as fuck zoomer slop today.
>>746632045so if it doesn't have suspense, and the suspense is what makes something scary, and being scary makes something horror, then it isn't horror. the pacing makes the suspense, and dead space aint got it. this is going to blow your mind, but it's a grotesque nightmare setting, not horror game. and yes, i do care about myself, as i should. sane people generally look out for number one. what are you even trying to say?>>746632087you're mostly just stuck on my bad writing, which is fair, but you're just avoiding the point. also, you're dead wrong, isaac is an extremely competent badass. i went through the game thinking he was basically a more grounded take on duke nukem. if dead space is horror, so is doom. so is diablo. so is quake. so is anything with a macabre element. i don't find those games scary, and neither is dead space. you get the gun, you shoot the baddie, and it just looks different from uniformed baddies that saturate the genre. it's like you're trying to tell me the puft marshmallow man was actual horror in a movie satirizing elements of horror. did your attempt to psychologically profile me advance your own point in any way?
