Not really sure why this game gets jerked off over when the story is super linear and you get no choices. You don't want to be the nerevarine? That's too bad! It's no different than Skyrim forcing you to be the dragonborn
>>
>>746624571
It had a deep combat and magic system. It did not hold your hand and tell you where to go. You had to explore and learn about the world. You could become a god by the end, or not.

So true. Total lack of choices. The game forces me to be in Morrowind. What if I don't want that? Too bad. You aren't leaving Vvardenfell. Won't let me pick anything but Elder Scrolls races as well. Want to play as an Aasimar? Too bad! Want to play as a Ring Wraith? NOPE. Literally no choices

Retard, let me explain it to you.

See in the past we did not have the tech we have now. For the time it was revolutionary.

Compared to oblivion, or skyrim the combat is better in morrowind. It is not as pretty for your slopped out brain, but it was better mechanically since you can "miss" or have an attack "blocked" there just were not animations for this.

So?!
That's the story the game is telling. Not every game ever has to be a CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE with a good/evil meter that does absolutely fucking nothing but change a single line of dialog in the ending cutscene. It's like getting mad at a book because you can't choose how it ends.
>>
>>746624571

Is there a game that lets you choose between being the chosen one/keeping your special powers or rejecting your destiny/throwing away your powers? I've already played Pathfinder WOTR so don't mention that.

I thought Morrowind fans liked reading quest logs or whatever, so I'm surprised your reading comprehension is that bad. Obviously Saints Row 2022 is bad, that's my point. The different between TES games and actually linear railroaded games like the majority of CRPGs, is that TES games actually give you the autonomy to go anywhere at the start.

"Real RPGs" are often structured into acts or you cant really progress past where the story allows. The difference is that CRPGs and some WRPGs give you a dialogue box that results in different outcomes and endings for quests and for the game in question.

TES games are rather linear in their actual quest structure. But the nice part about them is that you're given the freedom to roleplay what you want by actually being able to choose what to do.

Want to be a mage and nothing else? You can immediately go to the mages guild and join them and only focus on mage related tasks and factions. You can completely ignore other factions or the main quest and the game will not be any worse because of it. That's literally impossible in the majority of CROPGs or WROGs where your character is defined and the narrative is more structured and railroaded.

It's why Bethesda games are still relatively unique, and why TES games still don't really have any real clones.
>>
>>746624571
Old man here:
The alure of these old games is that they have the balls to make a lvl 1 character suck giant dick, so growth feels meaningfull. This is pretty much 100% gone from modern beth games.

Also, and boomers will hate this, but games used to be pretty shit and jank and a lot of the alure of that era was not only were you fighting an enemy, you were also fighting the game.
>>
>>746627035
If you're going to try and counter saying gameplay is the most important over story, you should actually choose a game with good gameplay as an example otherwise you just look like an idiot.
>>
>>746626268
Unironically no. RPGs should be entirely systems-driven like M&B and Kenshi. Relying on pre-written scenarios is a design dead end.
Players in a tabletop RPG are constrained by the social contract of respecting the GM's preparation, but in return they get the benefit of a thinking, creative human being who will moderate things for them.
Computer RPGs lack both the benefit of the latter and the constraints of the former. Yet the former constraints are always built-in regardless. Video games should play to their own strengths.

I'm tired of games whose reputation is propped up by ecelebs. Morrowind was an attempt at an action rpg with some of the worst action seen in gaming, and an attempt at rpg with some of the most broken and nonfunctional rpg mechanics ever. It was one of the first open worlds, a genre universally despised by people who know better, and it was a terrible one at that (is an empty husk of a world outside of the cities; relies entirely upon often wrong street directions; has abysmal character speed). Don't even get me started on the quests.

But because it has flying and allows you to craft spells (i.e. you can make 5 variations of damage darts that are functionally equivalent and no better than what you get by default) and because it's the third entry in a series that eventually produced one of the most popular games of all time, it has become hip amongst teenagers who want to act contrarian and put on a "I'm not like the other children" act. Shit on what's popular, overrate garbage from 20 years ago just because its old. I think this is a disservice to gaming, because it will lead uninformed and naive people who give morrowind a shot to form the completely wrong opinion that all older games / rpgs were bad. No, it's just morrowind that sucks. Shift to fps rpgs and suddenly the games hold up without need for 12 hour whiny essays: strife, system shock 2, deus ex.

But you know what? Liking morrowind is fine! You just need to stop claiming it's one of the greatest rpgs of all time and you need to stop throwing stones in a glass house: shut the fuck up about skyrim. Because if skyrim is dogshit, morrowind is —at best— dogfood. >inb4 food analogy

>Don't even get me started on the quests.
All Morrowind quests are more engaging than Oblivion and Skyrim quests by default because of the journal directions. And BECAUSE Morrowind is a first-person open-world game, it can have more complex directions than top-down CRPGs.
Whereas in other RPGs it would be "go to [location]", with MAYBE a little extra "southeast of [other location]", Morrowind can have directions like "Go south and walk up to that funny-looking tree. Now turn left. Keep walking until you see a mound to your right. The entrance is on the other side of the mound. If you see a bunch of rocks then you've walked too far."

Yes the game is overrated. The world is interesting but super repetitive and ugly, the gameplay is atrocious, the story is forgettable, most quests are linear as you said.

Yes the game has a deeper, more complex RPG system, and people like to pretend Morrowind was the last great TES but it's wrong. Daggerfall is better. Oblivions is more entertaining. Skyrim is mindless fun and has great immersion. Morrowind has nothing.

I won't shut my pants don't worry anon. But oblivion has an even worse main quest because at the end you get sidelined by the actual main character who makes the big sacrifice and blah blah blah. At least in morrowind you're the main character. I'm just saying, the level of main questline linearity is the same as skyrim
>>
>>746627576
>abysmal character speed
What? Travelling in Morrowind is arguably even faster than the later games with fast travel since with boats/guilds/silt striders you can effectively fast travel to places you haven't even been yet and a couple decent spells can have you zooming around the map

I was actually really invested in the main quest but the ending was really underwhelming. And I was also disappointed at how linear it mostly was and the quests themselves most of the time are not that fun either. I still enjoyed the game overall though, I definitely liked it more than Oblivion.
>>
What I liked about Morrowind the only time I played it in late 2010s or early 2020s is that the setting feels more mature than later entries.
Racism, slavery, noble politics, imperialism are all presented in a way I can totally see existing in real life.

In Skyrim and Oblivion, all politicking and xenophobia feels childish.
