Always felt the way he writes sad stuff to be odd because he's not super good at the big in your face stuff and it comes off as melodramatic, not bad, just very exaggerated. However the quieter less overt stuff he does is actually insanely good at tugging on the heartstrings.

The worst twist and plot point is the cast of MGS3 being the Patriots. Zero, who was just a funny British dude who liked James Bond movies, who did not particularly even talk about Boss that much, being turned into the arch villain of the setting, who wants to dominate the world, is stupid as fuck and not foreshadowed or implied in MGS3 at all.
