I miss games such as Crackdown, Saints Row, True Crime... it seems many developers have the misconception that you need the same useless autistic attention to detail or scale that Rockstar puts in their game to compete, but really you just need a fun sandbox.
On 360 I had a lot more fun playing SR2 than GTAIV, even if objectively GTAIV had the better production value. Of course history is proving me wrong since all of those series are now dead and buried, but still... I'd at least like them to get a decent port some day so I can replay them.

>lets do gta but lets allow you to do things you cant do in gta to be different
vs now
>lets just do elden ring but uhhh....you can...do...the...you can...um...shoot a gun? that's it different enough ship it
>>
>>746629994
Lack of competition turned rockstar into a nigger company. They can do anything they want and fans will eat it up because they made a couple good games years ago
>>
>>746629994
We'll never get a True Crime-type of game again not because of a budget problem but because it's verboten playing a cop in the current year, even games like Ready or Not have people shitting on it for that fact.
>>
>>746629994
I was just thinking about this game yesterday. Get out of my head
>>
>>746629994
To be fair these franchises you love are dead due to awful management. Crackdown 2 was an inferior sequel and Crackdown 3 was in development hell. Saints Row wrote itself into a corner by becoming more and more stupid (disclaimer: I love SR4) and the last entry was universally hated. You could argue Agents of Mayhem being bad didn't help.

>>746629994
Crackdown 1 was gold. Just straight to the point fun.

Just Cause 2 was also it (didn't like JC3). We'll never see games like it again.
>>
>>746631705
In reference to this >>746630978 , it's baffling what they did with Just Cause 4. How do you fuck it up this bad?

I really don't get the argument that if you make a open world crime game it will be a GTA clone? Like they own the genre when Sleeping Dogs, True Crime, and Saints Row 2 were better games than GTA 5.
>>746630794
I swear if Ubisoft wasn't so woke and retarded they could make a decent open world crime game.
>>
>>746629994
i know what you mean. everybody got excited watching the GTA6 extended look but it just made me wish Saints Row wasn't dead and that Cyberpunk 2 was closer.

>am i kawaii uguuuu

This is so dumb
>>
city of dreams city of gang gang gang gang
>>
>>746631919
By that logic, DayZ is a Minecraft clone because it has an open world, multiplayer, crafting and zombies. Some people are just silly
>>
>>746629994
Crackdown was designed around the insight that most GTA players just fucked around in the city and ignored the missions. The whole idea of rigid missions was criticized as unnatural to the sandbox concept, so the goal in this game was to eliminate the bosses in any manner you saw fit, becoming naturally included in the process of "fucking around". Sounded like an interesting game, never played it though
>>
>>746629994
I also was one of the weird teenagers who liked Saint's Row more than GTA. Sad that it died.
>>
>>746633228
It's very fun, short and sweet. The leveling by doing thing that changes your characters/car appearance, jump height/equipment effectiveness encourages you to try various playstyles.
The first game was maybe a bit too simple since it's basically only shooty bang bang but it was a good first entry. I don't know what the fuck they were thinking with the sequel. They should've added better side activities, improve vehicular combat and maybe add a gimmick to it like mounted weapons.
Game shouldn't have been an Xbox exclusive either, it's not a system seller.
>>746630814
Only a vocal minority bitching, Ready or Not found an audience for example. You'd maybe have to renounce some off the ball&gun demographic but I'm convinced if the characters are likeable and it's not a "grounded" cop story people don't give a shit.

For me it was Mercenaries, Just Cause 2, and even Just Cause 3. Mercenaries 2 was a bit broken.
>>
>>746629994
Crackdown was fun as hell.
I miss those 360 gems.
>>
>>746633818
I haven't played the first Crackdown game in years but what happened to the sequels were they bad?
>>
Comparing Crackdown and GTA is retarded, the closest thing is Prototype
>>
>>746634572
Crackdown 2 added some mutant/zombie outbreak shit and coop, not to mention it felt way less impactful in gunfights and movement was more floaty. It's basically a sequel that adds little new and manages to be worse on some fronts.
I haven't played 3, the destruction gimmick might've been a good idea but from the gameplay I've seen it's actually worse than Just Cause 3 not to mention this was a next gen exclusive.

looking forward to gta 6, a mature game for mature gamers such as yourself?
>>
>>746634572
Look at Crackdown 3 gameplay on youtube and put it into the context that it was released 5 years after Infamous Second Son.
Microshart wanted this to be le ebin killer app when it always had the inkling of being a fun AA multiplat series.
>>
>>746635487
>I haven't played 3, the destruction gimmick might've been a good idea but from the gameplay I've seen it's actually worse than Just Cause 3
The final game actually has zero destruction except for 3 barely breakable walls in the shitty multiplayer.

Someone will start vibecoding Xenia and you'll be able to emulate it. Or it will brick your PC.
>>
I think a lot of people only played crackdown for the halo 3 beta and it being fun was sort of a fluke
>>
>>746636119
I boughted the game for cheap second hand years after its release and it ended up being one of my favorite 360 games along Dead Rising and others.
Unfortunately this was peak vidya expansion era with the dudebro influx and any moderate success under a large publisher meant the sequels would be mismanaged or heavily scaled up, often unsuccessfully.

Ma favorite Temu GTA-like was Scarface and second place Godfather 2. Scarface had fun gunfights, maybe a little bit too grindy and the late game coke runs were hard but still amazing AA game.
Godfather 2 had the whole front thing with capturing businesses weaved into the main story.
Honestly if you enjoy gameplay above presentation Rockstar hasn't been on top of the GTA-like genre for a long time, unfortunately they're the ones that stood the test of time because of mismanagement from greedy publishers on one hand and the fact that Rockstar's presentation and scale is unmatched on the other.
>>
>>746629994
Saints Row 1 and 2 feel like the result of a bunch of guys who played GTA and had a folder of ideas of stuff they wished you could do in those games so they set out to make their own GTA with blackjack and hookers and that’s the type of shit the games industry is missing nowadays, every iterative ‘clone’ of a successful game just follows it to a T. there’s not that same drive to do crazy shit you couldn’t do in the original
>>
>>746629994
90% of the fun I had in Crackdown was abusing the jump/throw glitch, which would have been patched by modern gamedev (or never exist because they wouldn't be able to figure out good physics)
>>
>>746629994
you'd like samson maybe
gameplay straight off the ps2
>>
>>746629994
OP you stupid bitch, what the fuck are you talking about. Rockstar is one of the only major companies left even dabbling with the genre in a serious manner at all. Why go after them instead of all the other companies that devolved into producing linear story bullshit. At least gta 6 is going to be an actual sandbox of a sorts
>>
Crackdown 1 had the buggy that you could jump and then stick to walls and drive up or down them. I loved to try and scale the tallest buildings using that car it was really fun.
>>
>>746638569
Rockstar makes good open worlds but terrible sandboxes, and I really don't know why you took offense to OP since it didn't blame Rockstar for anything. Actually, Rockstar did make some good sandbox stuff in GTA5, but they're all locked to GTA:O. Bravo Take Two!
>>
>>746630814
I've bought into the ACAB movement so deep that playing Lego City Undercover made me cringe
Why did cops have to kill an entire genre?
>>
>>746634572
Empty shit that takes itself way too seriously from another studio. Commercials made it look so much more fun in tone despite the outbreak.
>>
>>746633228
Crackdown was unironically BOTW before BOTW. It was truly ahead of its time in design. An open world game where you’re give true freedom to tackle the bosses in any way or order you see fit was unheard of at the time.

One boss is clearly meant to be the final challenge but you can straight up go kill him when the game starts if you can bullshit your way up his tower and survive.

>decide to check out Crackdown last week because I was bored
>driving is utter dog shit
>shooting is also utter dog shit
>none of the weapons feel fun to shoot
>none of your abilities are useful besides agility and none of them make you feel like a superpowered badass
>literally zero story to speak of
>unlike Saints Row, none of the bosses have any personality or character and are literally just NPCs with more health
>map is completely barren and lifeless
>game is just wandering aimlessly around the map, finding a target, killing said target, and then repeating that process 100x
>when you aren't doing that you're forced to play a shitty version of Mario as you run around like a retard and collect five million agility orbs
Do people seriously like this game?

Friendly reminder that Crackdown 1 was made by David Jones, aka the guy that created GTA when the company was called DMA Design. The Hausers came around when Take2 acquired DMA as part of a bigger purchase of devs. Crackdown 2 was made by a different studio becuser Microsoft wanted a sequel immediately but Real Time Worlds (David Jones) was working on APB, which was cops and robbers before GTA Online was a thing.

If anyone is curious, Crackdown 3 is also made by Jones and it's basically the actual sequel to Crackdown 1.
>>
Crackdown was actual kino and fun. Orb collecting autism translated into direct feedback which made grinding for even agility orbs fun.
They don't make them like they used to.
