So, was it a disaster/disappointment, after a decade of development?
>>
>>746672081
disappointing, definitely
that being said, going from prime 1 to prime 3 you should have seen it coming
>>
It is a sub-standard game by Nintendo quality standards

I did not truly hate it but I do not think it was worth the asking price and there was far too much stuff that was obvious filler because they ran out of time.
>>
Definitely disappointing. It's not the worst Metroid game, but it is the worst Prime game.

yup
they doubled down on the problems of prime 3, and the bad foundation bamco made before they passed the buck to retro. truly a classic nintendo move.
its got uninspired upgrades and bad level design. they were cooking, but kinda like a meth lab gone wrong. No more 3d metroid now, its over.
>>
>>746674657
even worse than federation force?
>>
It's a disappointment. The game is enjoyable enough when the support cast isn't dragging it down. Definitely not worth a switch 2. Has all the problems of 3 with even worse writing. Love that OST though.
>>
>>746674746
Federation force was a decent co op multiplayer
Prime 4 killed a franchise for 0 benefit
>>
As a Metroid fan it is disappointing but not a disaster. I expected a lot better but it's just so offensively mediocre. Nintendo games are rightfully held to higher standards.
>>
>>746674746
not him, but who even played that game? the consequences of its lengthy production cost and a mainline game bombing instead of a spin off bombing are certainly more dire, atleast.
>>
>>746672081
It wasn't horrible. I felt like the individual areas were fine, but somewhere along the way the game had a really rushed development and lot of undercooked ideas were left in.
>>
>>746674746
NTA but as someone who actually like Fed force, I'd say so since if nothing else you can play that with your mates. They'll make it fun, even if you're not having it yourself. If you don't like Prime 4, that isn't changing. I'll sooner play Fed force again than prime 4 personally. The cast of P4 just suck.
>>
>>746674847
I think calling it mediocre is a stretch. the last couple entire areas are pure garbage.
your least favorite of the prime trilogy is "mediocre", prime 4 is a disgrace.
>>
I still can't believe that a non trivial amount of green gems are required to complete the game. Why would they purposefully make you spend hours farming just to progress? Why is there a desert and a motorcycle in the first place? Its insane choices like these that make it the worst Prime, but still, it was massively overrated at release. Nintendo fans tend to forget that Nintendo does not make first party games aimed at adults, so yeah, you're gonna get Myles and quips now and then.
>>
>>746672081
Disaster is too strong a word but its game design would have been considered old hat even in 2017 when they announced it.

The hub world that aggressively wastes your time is already a non-starter. Supporting cast is mostly garbage. The environments have some charm but awful naming conventions.
>>
>>746675105
The thunder generator area where you get the bike is so much cooler than basically anything else in the game. It's crazy how much of a difference it is.

Shame about the undercooked driving lanes that connect it and the weird tutorial area at the bottom, the bike is then unceremoniously ignored for the rest of the game except as an excuse to have the open world huge and annoyingly empty!
>>
>>746674185
After this being the first post, there's nothing else to say in this thread. Each Prime game has been worse than the last.
>>
>>746675457
2 is better than 1 and 4 is better than 3
>>
>>746672081
Bafflingly shit game that could’ve been instantly fixed to at least a 7/10 if they cut the desert and let you slot upgrades without having the walk all the way back to the unfunny nerd.
>>
Things Metroid does not need
>NPC companions
>quirk chungus quips
>vehicles
>big empty overworlds
>>
>>746675363
Volt Forge was the most visually impressive area in terms of design and visuals, no question about that.
>>
>>746675149
I think the bike could have been cool with level design supporting it (and upgrades). maybe it coulda been useful outside the desert.
the desert is just empty and the bike is too slow and mechanically uninteresting.
but instead its like, hey go get the next chip and the chip opens the door.

a simple patch could change how many dumb crystals are required, just like silksong had to patch how much money they player gets from grinding enemies.
>>
>>746675512
Corruption isn’t my favorite but it didn’t come close to pissing me off the way 4 did.
I could see myself replaying it at least one more time, 4 I will never play again genuinely.
>>
I feel like the bike could have worked in some other capacity but the fact that it's used to traverse a needlessly large, mostly barren desert really puts a damper on it. Like it could still be a method of transport, but you have to make the ride interesting.
>>
>>746675049
I would've liked Fed Force if 1, it wasn't mech shit, and 2, it didn't have a chibi toddler artstyle. A spinoff FPS with Federation mooks could've been cool

The woke writer also wanted Samus to be trans.

You cannot seriously believe this

3 is so much better than 4

Please tell me you are trolling, this is causing me distress that anyone could have such bad taste
>>
Prime 4 was the only game I wanted to play on switch, so after 7 years of being forced to play smash with friends was I disappointed? Yes I was. Because it wasn't just bad, it was abysmal dog shit.
I payed 300 for my switch when the first trailer dropped however many eons ago, bought smash ultimate, metroid prime 1 remaster, and 7 years of switch online. So all in all I would say nintendo reemed my ass hole. The only fun I got out of prime 4 was how much I wanted to play prime 2 echoes
>>

The only good thing about this game was that it finally forced Tanabe to retire.
>>
>>746675536
the morph ball is a vehicle
but the morph ball is fun to use, regularly useful, and gets interesting upgrades. most metroid games are designed entirely around the morphball and the bike wasnt. there is nothing stopping them from making a cool and fun vehicle in all fairness
>>
>>746675696
That's the other thing that makes Prime 4 such a huge letdown. There are people who bought a Switch solely for it and waited SEVEN YEARS with almost no news about it. The hype was insane. I suppose that's on people for setting themselves up for disappointment, but you can't blame people for having some hope.
>>
>>746675690
>this is causing me distress that anyone could have such bad taste
You need to get over this personality flaw of yours. There are retards in this world you can't reason with and you must come to terms with that. Once you do, you will reach Buddha-like serenity
>>
>>746675690
can you not defend my favorite underdog game with shitty reddit spacing and a non-engaging counterpoint?
cool, thanks.
>>
>>746672081
The game just reeked of how it almost certainly used to be a different kind of game until they abandoned it and scavenged what there was to make this game. Like why is there a massive empty desert? Really felt like it was originally more open world until they scrapped the idea.
>>
>>746675696
i knew this game was going to suck ass, so I pirated it.
I put up with the day 1 miserable performance stuttering just to play it in one shot asap. im glad i didnt pay shit for this shit game
>>
>>746676207
I think it’s the other way around, the desert feels completely incongruent with everything else it feels like they made the rest of the game and then tacked it on at the last second.
Tanabe probably chimped out at them to make it more like BoTW because that’s what modern gamers want and that was the best they could manage.
>>
>>746672081
This game felt like it took everything that still worked about Prime and changed it for the worse, and then kept everything that actually did need updating exactly the same. Really poor direction.
>>
Prime 4 was just a case of them completely misunderstanding what made Prime so popular in the first place
They were already veering off course with Prime 3 and Prime 4 was just taking the piss
>>
>>746672081
Changing Sol Valley + Chrono Tower into a 'Chozo Ruins' type area would've helped a bit. Completely remove GF squad outside of leaving scan logs and their corpses. Might've made for a decent game but that's basically an entire new one.
>>
If you removed the desert entirely and linked all the different areas with a small hub area instead the game would not suffer for it at all.
It is blatantly a last second inclusion that was probably a mandate from on high.

Going in to the game, I expected it to be shitty after being in production for so long. But to my surprise, almost none of my issues with the game felt like they were a result of the development hell besides the last few areas being hallways. The companions, the shitty Hyrule Field overworld, the writing, it all felt disastrous on a conceptual level in a way that I wasn't ready for
>>
>>746672081
Nah, I loved it. Solid 9/10.
>>
>>746675512
Absolutely not but the first area in 3 is the most boring world of all four games.
>>
>>746675512
>2 is better than 1
I still have absolutely no understanding of why people think this
Maybe if you didn't get the Dark Suit after the first boss there would be a gameplay argument, but, the game just invalidates the most interesting thing about it way too fast, making the rest of the game a boring slog
>>
The only bad Metroid game is Other M, get over it. You won't be getting (You)s you absolute tards, have a nice night.

3 is more consistent but the highs of 4 (bosses and first areas) bring it up to me. I also like the combat mechanics it introduces more than how much Hypermode trivializes every encounter. I have love for all the games and it's close though so I can find myself changing my mind in the future.

Honestly, I never finished any of the Prime games and each of which was for really dumb reasons that wasn't any real fault of the games themselves.
>Prime I got past Meta Ridley and for some reason (I was very young back then) Impact Crater gave me dreadful anxiety at the concept of scaling the area while potentially being grabbed mid-air and sent all the way back down again. I know it was a two minute section at most but it felt much longer for me. I got to Metroid Prime twice, died twice because I was not very good at the game and didn't go back to it.
>Prime 2 I kept getting lost and couldn't navigate very well to where I needed to go. I eventually beat Chykka but lost motivation to keep going after that. I didn't have any real trouble with Boost Guardian oddly enough, and it seemed to just die to nothing at like 20% HP which may have been some glitch
>Prime 3 I beat Omega Ridley and knew I had to find my way to Phaaze but got lost in Pirate Homeworld. I was also trying to scan absolutely everything but learned from the internet I'd missed the Training drone scan in the starting world. After that I didn't feel like playing anymore.
>>
>>746675686
This shit is so fucking childish and overtly misogynistic. Making Samus trans (which isn’t even a real thing) is about as anti-woman as anything imaginable. It’s unbelievable that feminists, who used to take themselves so goddamn seriously, publicly allowed themselves to be so fucking dumb and retarded.

It's an oddity because it has pretty good (albeit few) moments but it's surrounded by downright baffling decisions. I'd even argue is more of a spit to the face than Other M, because for all its flaws, at least OM didn't have Adam or Anthony constantly talking to you over the radio, nor did it tried to shy away that the game was gonna be extremely linear, unlike Beyond that made you believe you could get the keys in any order.

Great visuals, good OST, it's just that everything else is horribly executed. I haven't touched it since I beat it, and I dread to think of a second playthrough and do the crystal energy bullshit all over again.

not him, but I love prime 2 as my favorite prime game
it mostly comes down to people glazing prime 1 way too hard. I just prefer the world swapping gimmick to "what if super was a 3d game"
I like aether and the luminoth, its a cool setting. maybe you hated the darkworld and the ammo, but I will gladly take it over going through magmoor 5 times.

any issue with prime 2 I have like the cheap save points and bosses, gets nullified on a replay, but the map design of planet talon never does.
Echoes is just more rewarding to replay IMO but I understand if people like 1 more because of its own strengths

>>746678502
It's honestly commendable that Nintendo still lets this series go on when it's never had a boost in sales besides Dread. They would've known Beyond would make negative money the second they chose to press the restart button but did it anyways. People would have you believe that Other M put the series on hiatus but it was actually just the fact that Retro was busy with the Kong and Sakamoto scrapped Dread like three times.
>>
>>746677942
Why did you continue buying games in a series you clearly didn't actually like?
>>
>>746678387
Echoes also has a few difficulty spikes and much more interestingly designed bosses as well. Dark Samus's fights mog pretty much all the bosses from Prime 1 plus you have qol shit like an improved scan visor. Don't get why Corruption gets shit on so hard either. I consider it inferior to 1 and 2 but it still has its own legs to stand on.

I never cared about 3D Metroids and likely never will. 2D will always be superior.

>>NPC companions
Can't agree, prime 3's hunter fellas were cool niggas, the moth guys from prime 2 are a kind bunch, Metroid 2 ends with an NPC companion opening the door for you and it is a cozy bittersweet moment, Super Metroid got the animals that act as silent tutorials for some of your "hidden" techniques (shinespark and walljumps) and Adam in Fusion was cool, i don't care if fusion is too dialogue heavy or that you can't skip navigation rooms by pressing start, the suspense as the story progresses is tight as fuck.
Do not let Prime 4 being a shitty game sour up the fact that Samus having companions can have cool chemistry. Hell, fucking smash bros brawl gave Samus a Pikachu and that shit was raw as fuck
>Vehicles
The problem with vehicles is their implementation, Samus did not need a bike exclusively to traverse a shitty barren empty desert hub when she has speed booster and shinespark to go fast (Even if it means that in a different world, prime 4 would play like a sonic game and that's worse than samus riding an alien bike). But having minigame-like sections where you use shit to open doors is cool stuff.
>Quips
Maybe not the way they were written in prime 4, but prime 3's dialogue with the hunters was baller. Though i guess it helps having actual talent and not soillenial theatre kids on that front.
>>
>>746677983
it also isn’t true in any way, they’re just having a melty because a greenhair was hired
>>
>>746672081
Even ignoring the dismal quality of the final product, what little we know about the development of the game was nothing short of disastrous. Horribly mismanaged project built on a rotten foundation. It needed to be scrapped and restarted but this didn't truly happen.

That'll be the end of 3D Metroid, maybe they'll give it another shot in like 25 years or something.
>>
>>746678686
my hot take is 2>3>1
I think corruption with a keyboard and mouse mod is rad as hell. 3 honestly kinda fails at what it tries to do with hyperbeam and overall combat in a metroid game, but I see the vision and I respect the attempt
I wont say its perfect and ignore its obvious problems, but I just handled them easier

It's pretty cut-and-dry. Obviously Nintendo isn't gonna officiate at it, and I highly doubt that the tranny pushed their luck and ever actually tried to include that in the plot, but I'm a big believer in authorial intent. Just keep trannies out of the writing room for God's sake

I beat the game for the first time this Sunday.
>Areas are offensively linear, Fury Green in particular, once you finish it for the first time, it has only one big room with two smaller ones to unlock. Great Mines is also terrible in that regard.
>Sol Valley was either a terrible afterthought or a piece of development that remained from the original Bamco development process, it only existed to hunt green crystals so they had to throw a handful of shrines and upgrades to not make it feel so worthless.
>No margin of error with the green crystals, if you miss a single tiny piece, you can't 100% the game.
>Space Fed crew wasn't so bad in my opinion, but the final boss' first phase was cancerous as fuck because his electric attack could easily kill one of them if you were unlucky.

The game had still a good bunch of stuff going for it and I can excuse its flaws because of the game's very troubled development, but Retro Studios really needs to look back at Prime 1 and see why that game still feels timeless and near perfect to this day. Horrendous replay value too, I missed one single scan and I refuse to replay the game, let alone in Hard mode, to get the last gallery unlocks and cutscenes, so I'll just watch them in Youtube.

An extra vehicle does not work in a Metroidvania.
>>746675869
You can always morphball, it is always part of your problem solving approach after you get it.
There's no Captain Oak sending you a codec telling you that "Now is not the time for that" when you morph ball.
>>746676207
Open world is fake interstitial fabric and can almost always be stripped out and replaced with just a level select list.
>>746676830
If there hadn't been a tacked on desert, then none of the levels would connect, there would need to be a replacement made with actual effort.
>>746677159
Probably, but it's harder to justify the pricetag and long development if they do that, people still think that open world is somehow bigger and more work than a small concise hub.
>>746680570
The nature of open world means that it's never interwoven with anything, it's just a placeholder and you can replace it with anything. The only thing keeping them from scrapping it would have been the need to scrap it and make something new in its place, but they had 6 fucking years to do that so it has to just be irrational design debt.
>>746681091
If it's Metroid's Skyward Sword, then the next 2 games are going to be exactly the same, but people will insist that they are different due to some cosmetic change.

The motorcycle could have absolutely worked. You get psychic platform powers, why not allow making a ramp. You throw morphball and power bombs into devices, why not allow throwing it into your ramp, give it super boost. Why track down mech parts and punch out the shield, why not be tasked with finding a proper vantage point and boost jumping into it. ect ect

Prime 4 isn't bad, but the amount of missed potential only rivals Wind Waker.

Do not put Prime 4 and Wind Waker in the same sentence. I will kill you.

>>
>>746692315
Trash all belongs in the bag together though.

>>746693352
literally not a single thing in common with Botw, though I wish it did. it had those one note islands from Wind Waker in a couple places though
>>

reading all the interviews and seeing how most of the shitty ideas in this game came from Kensuke Tanabe it wouldn't surprise me if Bamco tried to make a more traditional Prime experience but got kicked out because they couldn't get along with Tanabe's more story focused vision
>>
why are people afraid to say retro fucked up too
>but tanabe
>but bamco
primes 2 and 3 are proof they were spiraling

I bought it for like 40 bucks which is honestly fair, all things considered.

It's absolutely a disappointing game and it had way too much busywork, especially having to collect those dumb crystals all over that god-awful desert because you -need- to to get to the final boss. Getting bothered by your various human sidekicks is annoying, too, although there are some nice moments there (look, she's doing morph ball!). They go from being annoying, to each having a dramatic self-sacrifice moment, to everyone returning randomly, to finally dying after all, it's just so poorly handled.

Also scanning things is one of my favorite things in Metroid Prime, but this game managed to make it a goddamn slog because every fucking door and rock has its own unique scan text that doesn't count towards the final percentage but that will nevertheless tell you you haven't scanned it yet.

Boss battles were great though. I'd say the game needed more polish but how much more development could it get?

Because given what we know about Prime 4 development, Retro basically saved the game from being a colossal disaster
>Spiraling
>Conveniently forgets they made two great DK after Prime 3
The lesson is, let Retro be in charge of the project instead of forcing them to do gimmicks (Prime 3) or saving dumpster fires in record time (Prime 4 original Tanabe's vision).
>Prime 2 b-bad
Only if you're a casual
>>
>>746692542
Why do you assume he doesn’t own Dread as well?
>>
Wind Waker sucks
>>
>>746693610
I would agree about Prime 3 but 2 was fucking awesome

>the only way people can defend Prime 4 is to call people snoy trannies or PC vegans
I fucking hate this fandom.
>>
>>746693553
This. Tanabe is a retard.
>>
>>746696360
It's a good game regardless of which ass you putt for
>>
>>746696587
Sorry, I don't like movieshit and quirk chungus marvel faggotry. Not seeing the appeal of either.
>>
>>746672081
I wanted a sequel to Prime 1. I got a sequel to Prime 3 with the worst elements of Other M and a weird open world for no reason.
>>
>>746674814
When I seen the open world gameplay I decided to just get it on sale further down the line. Metroid convinced me to buy a Super Nintendo, a GBA, a GameCube, but it couldn't convince me to buy a Wii or Switch 2.
>>
>>746696805
I mean it is also available on the OG switch so it's not even a Switch 2 game. The S2 has a decent enough lineup but if Pokopia, OoTR and Fire Emblem don't appeal and you can play its multiplats on other consoles then yeah don't buy it.
>>
>>746672081
yeah, but Tanabe finally got the boot so if anyone ever picks metroid back up again they'll finally be free from his obsession with the Federation and stuffing Federation NPC soldiers all through Metroid games
>>
>>746672081
It was just really mid to the point of being forgettable.
>>
>>746696676
>Sorry, I don't like movieshit
I am sure you don't, queer
>>
Disappointing?
yes, undeniably.
A bad game?
not really, it's better than prime 3, suffers from the same issues, but this time we don't have hypermode and the places you visit are far more interesting than the shit on 3, only good area from 3 is Skytown, also the bosses on 4 are better.
>>
>>746692468
Yes he did.
