This was it. Right here. The EXACT moment Japanese gaming dominance died. They actually never recovered from this.

Congratulations on your low IQ, I guess.

In the native Japanese this is a very serious and poignant scene. The 4kids English dub is what ruined it, and that's all anyone remembers.

People who take this scene out of context are retarded

Yeah, that's the point, well done anon
>>
JRPGs are fucking shit. Not a single one has even half decent writing and the gameplay is braindead.
>>
The funny thing is that this scene does a fuck load of heavy lifting.

>Yuna: It’s embarrassing to say this myself… But summoners and their guardians are kind of like Spira’s ray of light. A lot of people in Spira depend on us. I learned to practice smiling when I’m feeling sad, you know?

"I learned to practice smiling when I'm feeling sad." This is how Yuna is able to cope with the fact she's on a suicide mission. She just lies to herself or ignores it. She never admits the truth of how she feels until Macalania and that's largely because of Tidus. Tidus doesn't work that way. He wears his emotions on his sleeve and he can't manufacture a feeling that isn't real. Something that is directly called out later

>Fayth: I’m sorry.
>Tidus: I’m grateful.
>Fayth: (Vanishes)
>Yuna: About what?
>Tidus: Oh, nothing. Hey, don’t make that face! Come on! We’re going to beat Sin! Let’s see some cheer, okay?
>Yuna: You’re hiding something.
>Tidus: (Turns his face away) I’m not!
>Yuna: Really? (After he leaves) You’re a bad liar, you know?

It's kind of weird how fucking hard FF dropped the ball. 11 was an MMO which was already strange. 12 was all plot, no characters in a series that made it's bank on characters. FF12 had the most annoying characters in existence while also barely having content. Never played 15. And 16 tried to reinvent itself as a character action game, which impressed neither FF fans nor character action fans.

You know what I want? 6 or 7 niggas fighting against an evil empire. It's the most basic premise in the universe and FF finds new ways to fuck it up every release.

>>746686245
Why do retards think that you must not understand the context if you find it cringe and the acting terrible?
>>
>>746691638
I remember back in the day wanting to try 11 and thinking how cool it sounded in my head but I didn't want to beg my parents to pay for the subscription on top of the game price. 12 I just cannot get into at all, it's boring. 14 is a boring VN that requires internet connectivity for some reason. 15 was OK if you just don't think of it as a Final Fantasy game at all. It's an open world boy band road trip simulator and it's alright for what it is. Haven't tried 13 or 16 yet.
>>
>>746691892
12 took me about 3 or 4 attempts to get into. Even then I've only finished it twice. I enjoyed reading up on the history of Ivalice and the 4 nations and the environments are detailed and beautiful. Desert biomes really aren't represented all that much unless it's Sahara-lite. With all this interesting shit, I couldn't understand why I didn't care about 12. Until I did my NG+ game and it hit me just how fucking boring the cast is. I know we make fun of how overly animated JRPG casts are but it is genuinely so much better than the overly subdued cast of 12. Balthier is the most memorable member and it's mostly because of his dry humor and quips. Ashe is angry 100% of the time. Basch is morose 100% of the time. And the characters in this post have most character than all of Panelo and Fran's scenes. No one gives a shit about Fran abandoning her family for freedom but everyone sure does know what her ass looks like.
>>
what was it with retarded 90s kids and making huge deals out of nothing
>FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUU NAVI IS SO ANNOYING
>only tells you what to do if you're retarded and wasting time
>OMG WTF THE LAUGHTER IS SO FORCED
>it's literally forced laughter
>>
>>746691892
Also 13 is very insipid. People say X is full of melodrama but that isn't true. Because X has ups and downs. You'll get Tidus telling the Goers to STOP RIGHT THERE but then you'll get scenes of him realizing his father genuinely loved him, more than his mother, but stubbornly holding on to hate for him because he really is a child.

13 doesn't have that up and down. The closest you get is Snow. And he is one of the dumbest motherfuckers in the series. I don't hate every cast member, Sazh is pretty cool and I didn't hate Lightning until her sequels. But damn near every moment is emotional baggage or emotional catharsis with no breaks. Imagine a version of FF7 that was 100% the first Northern Crater run. That shit would get old even if it were good, which it isn't.
>>
>Tidus acts intentionally silly to cheer Yuna up and get her out of sadness and weight of the world she is feeling
>LOL XD what is up with this scene it so silly :P
Perfect way to tell if someone is a retard.

It's kind of a relic from a bygone age that refuses to die. AVGN really popularized the whole "I'm smart because I can point out how shit everything is" type of game reviews. So a bunch of dipshits tried copying his schtick, only they weren't as good at it, and that's how you get fucking stupid things like tropes = bad even though a trope is just a tool and what matters is how it's used. So yeah to this day you get room temperature iq morons pointing out that a scene that was written to be cringe because it's insincere is cringe because it's insincere.
>>
>>746692512
I didn't even notice Navi saying "hey!" when I was messing around. My brother would be like "oh shut up, Navi!" and my reaction was "?? oh I guess she did say hey... whatever". They wouldn't have survived Skyward Sword.

This forced "Tidus laugh le cringe" meme got old over a decade ago, time to move on.

>>746687275
He sent that whore to the lifestream in a taxi.
>>
No one should gloss over the fact that at that point in the game, neither Tidus, or the player, *knew* that a Sin fight was a suicide run.

Yuna knew, and that's why she was sad, and that's why she had to practice smiling. But all the guardians knew what was up. That was the "big secret" kept from Tidus and the audience. Everyone knew it was a one way ticket.

So when Tidus was overacting and being goofy and being silly to try and cheer Yuna up, he didn't know *why* she was sad. He didn't comprehend the depth or weight of the mission.

It was a "fake it til you make it" moment where cringey goofy fake laughing turned into real and genuine laughing. It was a bonding moment for them, something that took Yuna out of her doom scrolling.
>>
>>746694040
Good post

It's why shit like this >>746693848 is what I mean by "highly detailed yet low resolution criticism." The information between Tidus and Yuna is asymmetrical. Tidus THINKS Yuna is just talking just cheering herself up when she's feeling down and that's the advice she's giving. What Tidus, and the player, don't know is that this isn't just Yuna saying some nice words. It's how she, and every other summoner, MUST live. Because they're knowingly marching to their deaths. Their Guardians are knowingly marching their loved ones to their deaths. It's a scene that has even more weight once you know the gravity behind why Yuna is saying what she's saying. And why the next conversation on Mi'hen Highroad is about the value of the Pilgrimages

>Tidus: I get it! I thought it was weird. Yuna’s dad defeated Sin ten years ago, right? But Sin’s still here! Didn’t make much sense till now.
>Tidus: Wait… If it just comes back…
>Yuna: Don’t say it isn’t worth it…Because it is.
>Narration: Even for a little while…people can sleep in their beds without being afraid. That kind of time is worth anything. Don’t say it isn’t worth it. Your words that day, Yuna– I remember them well.

It was July 2001. There were no smartphones. There were no playthrough guides. There were no YouTube videos detailing every decision and nitpicking every detail. For even large swathes of first World developed nations there was barely common Internet. So it wasn't a thing that was "known". What we know now, in September of 2026, after 25 years of playing it, of everyone playing it, of the remasters and the ports and the re-releases and the online videos and fan edits and wiki articles and every single discussion about it since...we didn't know what was going on in July 2001.

We (the players/audience) only knew what Tidus knew. To use your word, the knowledge was 'asymmetrical'. That's what made the big reveal such a shocker at the time, and I'd argue even more compelling than Sephiroth killing Aerith in 7. Where that was sudden and shocking, story-wise you had to deal with it and move on. In X, you learn the big secret, and it isn't just over and done with, you still have to keep going. You learn what you learn, and you have to dwell on it. It just sits with you. You have to stew in it. It has to build and boil and fester and gnaw at you and nag at you and deeply and fundamentally chew away at your sense of morality and conscience. And that, that sense of nagging, furious, depression, learning that the summoners path is a suicide run, knowing that it is a one way ticket death march, and that you have to do it anyway, the same way every summoner and all their guardians before had to, THAT is what makes Tidus snap and develop the plan to seek a permanent solution instead of a stop-gap. That's what makes the plan change from a suicide run to a "everyone makes it back" plan.

It's like watching The Sixth Sense after you read the book. The "twist/reveal" only has its intended impact if you don't know its coming. So to play this particular 2001 game with 2026 knowledge devalues the experience. And leads to cringey snarky try hard commentary from zoomers.

It was actually the character designs. Gamers turned 13 and saw a androgynous teen in a fluoro yellow cropped jacket and dungarees and thought "ah, this must be a fag game, for fags". And thus ended Japanese gaming dominance in America

Fucking no one missed the memo on "this is supposed to be awkward" because everyone knows that's what forced laughter would be, that's not the issue.

It's the execution that misses the mark and makes this part actually awkward instead of emotional from the player's perspective, even understanding the context. It really sounds too much like a typical american cartoon dubbing where such emotional scenes are at most played for humor, not straight.

>>
>>746705479
16 just feels like they took all the worst lessons from FF14 and tried to do their own take on FF6.

Like, I got started with the 3D version of FF4(Well, I played emulated FF stuff before that but I never really stuck with it). That game is very silly and melodramatic, but damn if it doesn't work. Not saying they should make something exactly like FF4 but if they are serious about attracting young people they should at least consider something with that kind of tone. I personally played FF4 at the exact right age, and it's probably the main reason I still somewhat care about the franchise.
>>
>>746705827
One of the things that got me about FF6 is how often it's presented as a stage play. You'll have a dramatic moment and then a moogle will step in to speak to the player like they're the audience. And it's cool. Squaresoft had full command of their medium. To the point that 3 decades later, Terra and Celes and Locke remain beloved characters.

I like Tidus when hes portrayed as more "white" like in Dissidia, AND when hes portrayed as very tan with more asian features like in the original FFX FMV cutscenes. But man, the recent zoomgroids who have "found" FFX lately have become so obsessed with screeching at Square-Enix about taking away Tidus' "melanin" that I hope he gets canonically paler with every future design choice they make for him.
