I remember people having some doubts because of the change of direction and how embarrassed Kojima was first presenting the change in direction at the game awards but Platinum was in their heyday at the time so people actually bought it without being metal gear fans, just platinum game fans.

I dropped the game when I couldn't beat Sam after like 30 attempts. That fight is such bullshit. It was good until then, though. The only other fight I've ever struggled with that much in a game was Sword Saint Isshin, despite rolling over almost every other boss in that game first try.
