Tifa and 2B come close, but no one will ever usurp Ms. Croft. She’s made her place in vidya history as the right character at the right place at the right time, and that ain’t easy to top. She’s kinda like Catherine the Great or Elizabeth II; she just won’t ever be mogged. Resident Evil is Capcom's biggest franchise but for how big Jill is and who starred in the first game, she still lives in Leon's shadow. Outside of like Phantasy Star 1 a lot of JRPGs have avoided female main characters unless they're player choice like Pokemon, to the point that something like Tales or Final Fantasy having female leads is seen as a novelty and Megaten is outright allergic to it.Tomb Raider had insane fucking output through the 90s and 00s, she clawed her way into being iconic.A lot of vidya heroines are also basically lawyer-friendly off-brand versions of male characters. Bayonetta is basically female Dante, Bombshell is a female Duke Nukem, as a western example.Newer video game characters also just have a much shorter shelf life of relevancy compared to 80s/90s legacy IP characters.
