I have only played pic related and V. With VI coming I would like to play the other ones.
Which games in the series does /v/ recommend the most? Also general GTA thread.

everything from 3 onwards is good, but I like gta sa the most, being pretty feature rich even compared to 4

I played all GTAs so far. Chinatown is my latest and is way better than I expected.

If you like the top down stuff enough, GTA 2 is honestly not that bad. The age shows a bit but it also has some features that never came back.

GTA San Andreas is the most feature rich one and most peoples favourite when it comes to the "3D-universe".
But to get the scope of what an upgrade it actually is, I would recommend GTA vice city first.

In my opinion GTA 3 is the only one of the 3D universe you can skip. Vice city does everything better and even Liberty city stories is a better alternative. Might be controversial but I never liked the third one.

For anyone that liked Vice city I cannot recommend Vice city stories enough. Just get PSCX2 and download the ROM. It's up there with San Andreas for me.

GTA IV is the closest to 5 but start with any of the episodes if IV:s story feels overwhelming (it's a long game).

San Andreas and Vice City Stories
Also play Bully

I tried replaying LCS recently and by god that game hasn't aged well
Then again it was the PSP version on an emulator, the controls were always a bit awkward on the PSP ones

If you're trying to get acquainted with the GTA universe, you don't need to play any game before IV, as the games before this take place in a completely separate continuity/universe, only sharing a few key characters (like Lazlow). Although, it's possible they could have retconned this.

>III
In ways, it’s suprising how good they got the formula with the first try, but it feels really prototype-ish when compared to later releases. Probably skippable.
>VC
III but with *much* better aesthetics and somewhat better mission design. Can be worth it, it you aren’t spooked by some jank-ass missions and rather minimalistic writing.
>San Andreas
Massive scale when compared to VC, characters are far more well-written, tons of features, easily one of the best games of the series. To be fair, it still has some of the same problems as other PS2 era GTAs like somewhat shoddy shooting, but it’s so good otherwise that who cares.
>IV
A more serious and focused GTA, no countryside, only a very detailed rendition of Liberty City and a grittier and more realistic atmosphere. Divisive, but I love it, genuinely has a rather unique atmosphere for a video game.

people bitch about AI in programming, rightfully so, but having it follow the design of an existing program like with recompilations is fine

3 has some awful balance issues and it effectively locks you out of gathering packages on the first island as soon as you finish the mission line there and make every gang member on the island insta-aggro when they see you. A load of them have perfectly accurate shotguns that can two-shot any car you're in from half a street away. The last mission is really bad too.
>need to be holding $500k to even start it
>strips all your weapons at the start of the mission
>time limit
>you either need to have previously found all of the packages to get weapons to spawn at your safehouses and drive to one very quickly to get them or rely on enemy weapon drops and a single rocket launcher spawn in the immediate area
VC improved a lot of stuff, but the main story feels kind of empty and it has that annoying part where you need to do most of the criminal ventures to unlock the final missions.

It's not a recomp, they're backporting all of the PS2 stuff to reVC engine. There's a recomp of a PSP version but it runs like ass.

Yeah, I just replayed VC and I didn’t enjoy that venture / asset part of it either, wore than I remembered. But the earlier parts of the game are fun and the basic gameplay is improved to the point where even ho-hum tier missions still can be somewhat fun.

But compared to SA, even if people like to criticize its plot for losing its focus later on, it just does it all better. At least San Fierro and Las Venturas have some kind of plots that move forward even if they aren’t that great. IMO gang wars are the only really irredeemable parts of SA.

I don’t think that anyone would seriously consider III to be on the same level as games that came after. It’s a valiant pioneer effort and can be enjoyable even today for some, but it’s also an excellent example of a game that gets superseded by its sequels.

that applies to many PS2 series
nostalgiababbys love 3 because it's the one they played first, simple as
