Starfield developer says space is inherently boring
>>
this is why fantasyfags should never be allowed to work on space games, and especially space games masquerading as "hard" sci-fi

Stargazing on an empty planet is different. It's lonely, but not in a sad way.

>>
>>746695238
You know what's also inherently boring? Guns. Running and jumping. Strategic planning. Slot machines. Kicking a ball.
That's why you make them FUN. You extract FUN out of these concepts. That's your fucking JOB. I can go play a game made 30+ years ago about a space ship shooting at rocks and have FUN because the devs back then weren't worthless hacks who had to keep sucking executive cock just to maintain a paycheck. I hate these worthless c-list "devs" of the modern age. How the fuck did everything go so fucking wrong so fucking fast?
>>
>>746695238
>we vastly increased the scope of our game and now we have empty spaces, how can this be happening?!
If you want to do pseudo hard sci-fi, never make the scale more than solar system level. It’s not rocket science

Yeah, empty generic desert planets are pretty boring if you could just go to them as easily as you could go to a grocery store.

WHICH IS THE REASON WHY YOU DON’T MAKE A GAME ABOUT EMPTY GENERIC DESERT PLANETS IF YOU ARE A GAME DEV, YOU MAKE MORE INTERESTING PLANETS OR PUT SOME INTERESTING THINGS ON THEM
>>
>>746695238
Then maybe they should have made the society that existed within that space interesting, yet they seemingly deliberately avoided doing that at every turn
>>
>>746695238
Is he wrong? if you were to do grounded space, a lot of it would be nothing since most planets either have instantly kill you environments or just be empty with rocks around. Then you'd have to set planets inbetween goldilocks zones which would make them more earthlike but then what would you do on them other than build space bases and mine for things? realistically there wont be any enemies around on these random backwater planets either. This is why you have to make the setting more fiction in order to make it interesting and fun, which is what Starfield did.
>>
>>746695238
Space could be fucking anything. There are a gorillion planets out there. Also, it's a fucking video game. So why does every space game have to be
>blue desert
>yellow desert
>green desert
>purple desert
>>
>>746695635
>It’s not rocket science
Wait just a fucking minute...
>>
Don't make a space game, then.
>>
Wow, you're telling me that when a bunch of mindless retarded normalfags make a game based on something they have zero love or interest in, it ends up being really boring and stupid? Wild.
>>
It was supposed to make the boring parts interesting though, but they took all that out at the last minute because they thought it would be too complicated.

Building bases on unclaimed rocks or moons? There's no point, you can purchase all those materials at stores anywhere. But originally, they were intended to produce fuel, supplies, and various other necessities to explore the unknown and uncolonized regions. In the final product, none of that matters. You can fly to the end of known space and back without a single thing, and nobody cares.

Of course, none of that would help with the boring, sterilized, hypercorporate world they made where even the most infamous nightclub on the dirtiest, most degenerate planet known to mankind looks like a kids 10th birthday party.

The game could've been amazing. Microsoft fucked it
>>
>>746695238

>>
>you see that star there, you can go to it.
>>
>>746695929

Microsoft had nothing to do with it. It's just the typical Bethesda product. Shilled as a revolutionary masterpiece before release, ends up being a half-baked sterile turd that's always two steps from falling apart completely and only gets held together with prayers and duct tape.
>>
>>746695238
Space is as boring as you make it to be. Just create some space alien species. The developers and "creative" heads are lacking ideas.

The fucked nature of it is very different from how modern Bethesda fucks things up. The megacorp sterilized it, cut its balls off. Killed any soul it might've had. Even fallout 4 had some obviously good ideas behind it, and eventually they added survival mode. No such luck for Starfield.

Don't even pretend Microsoft had no influence on the game

*Knock knock* It's the early 2020's and I'm coming in!
Shalom! I have quite the lucrative deal for ya today.
I think it's great that you're making video games and I want to give you this big wheelbarrow full of money I got here for you to do it. It's yours!
Catch? There's no catch!
Well, I just have one itsy, bitsy tiny request. I got this tiny list of DEI guidelines here. You can continue making the game exactly how you want it to be, I'm just going to need you to sprinkle in a little diversity here and there. The gamers won't even notice! After all, they're playing for the gameplay!
They won't care about a few race swapped characters and women in positions of power.
Just take the money, it's a total win-win here!
>>
Starfield was a blatant act of wanting to have your cake and eat it too. You can't have some things be "realistic" and others be blatantly not as such. If they wanted realistic space they should have made the sole act of making progress much harder so the harsh barren wastelands actually pose the threat they pose in real life. If you let me hop from planet to planet and use blasters to gun down space pirates like Star Wars you need make more interesting settings because you already conceded "realism" away
>>
>>746695754
The problem is that it’s not grounded, yet they still tried to larp as if it was to make the game seem smarter.
Even disregarding space magic, the fact it’s got ftl means that realism fucked off to Hawaii a long time ago, so constraining themselves to what’s realistic is just dumb.
The truth is that Todd wanted to brag about having thousands of planets to explore, but also knew full well he’d be able to do fuck all with them, so his solution was to preemptively excuse it with the realism argument. He just vastly overestimated the tolerance that people have for busywork nowadays. Maybe if he’d done it before Ubisoft spent a decade souring people on it the trick may have worked.
>>
>>746695238
Ah, yes, space. The rarely used setting in sci-fi. What a hack.

And yet when I complain about """realistic"'" games allowing your main character to eat 50 bullets to the face while every other enemy insta-dies, people look at me like I'm a freak. Look, I don't want games to be bone-crushingly hard, I just want most bullets to miss, but when they do hit, it's a big deal. Is there anyone else that is bothered by this other than me?

>>
>>746695238

>>
>>746697965
Many shooters already have "realistic" modes that let you do that, it depends on the game and if one hit deaths make the game more challenging or just unplayable. In some cases being tankier than the fodder lends itself to the power fantasy. Having a million empty levels because "space be boring" only lends to making the game boring.
>>
>>746695238
Space is only boring if you think too much like a reddit autist about it. Starfield failed because it's not absurd enough. It treats space travel like an Antarctic expedition. But it has no reason to. It's already unrealistic. There's artificial gravity, FTL travel etc. There's no reason to keep the tone of the game subdued and boring in a poor attempt at emulating the feel of modern day NASA government funded space missions.

No, they're not. We are instinctively hardwired to find the opposite gender attractive specifically for mating purposes. It's evolutionary and part of our internal biological drive to reproduce and propagate our species. This is why you don't find females of other species "sexy" the same way you do with human females (and if you do, it's because your brain identifies human-like qualities in it that may or may not even be there to begin with). The same goes for any other species.

This is literally the worst possible thing he could have said in his own defense. Starfield was a flop because space is so naturally interesting but the game somehow made it boring. Calling an unexplored frontier “inherently boring” is one of the most soulless and retarded comments someone can make, especially someone who claims to be a creative
BUT in his defense, “Nasapunk” is extremely unexciting BUT it still could have worked if executed correctly and it’s LITERALLY HIS JOB TO MAKE IDEAS WORK. The passionless designers aside, the writing was also notably horrendous, this was the game that brought us the “Starborn” after all. The sanitized cyberpunk genuinely upset me. Really, every aspect of the game was a failure aside from some of the assets and concept art. They didn’t want to make this game

Instead of turning it into a mindless, barren snoozefest where everything is abstracted away by loading screens
There's always something you can do to make it interesting.

Yes, it's boring when you have no imagination.
How do these fags survive in the entertainment industry? Starfield just cements that they are all hacks, and if they didn't have the world already premade for them with Fallout and Elder Scrolls, they'd be boring flops too.

Space isn't inherently boring. When you look at it as a whole there's nothing more mysterious or interesting in our known universe.

However the smaller parts that make up that whole are boring as fuck. There is far more fun to be had in a fantasy setting that's only the size of Rhode Island because that can be densely packed with dragons and magic and shit. The vast ocean of space is neat, but it gets boring as hell when you realize it mostly entails flying through nothing for periods of time just to arrive at yet another barren floating rock. Any fun space setting games aren't actually about space (FTL for example is mostly a ship management game), meanwhile fun fantasy games do heavily incorporate the environment around them.

I thought you might actually be able to wander about on a planet and stumble across a remnant of the ancient civ, like whoever made the temples. Even just a small bit of tech somewhere or something. Even without adding aliens, they added something that could have been interesting, like who were they and what happened? And then failed to explore that in any way, even with the DLCs. Even shit like the mars rover, you can't juts find it. You find something that unlocks that landing zone then go there. Its incredible how they made it so not worth looking around the worlds.

They still would have made it boring. Face it, aliens are just humans in a costume with some silly background culture that makes conflict and maybe a physiologic quirk (like asexually reproducing) if you're feeling daring.
It takes effort to make conflict between sentient beings interesting, and they just admitted it's too hard for them. I mean, the factions are: space cops, space corpos, space cowboys and space bandits. Making them elves/twileks/krogans wouldn't make the garbage they wrote any more interesting.

90% of shartfield does not take place in space. Well, most of it takes place in a loading screen, but the majority of gameplay takes place on planets. Boring, ugly, empty planets.
Daggerfall was good, procgen isn't the issue, the issue is that starfield is one of the least artistically inspired games I have ever played. The whole 'le soul/soulless' thing is way, way overused here, but starfield genuinely is a game with no soul. It's such a nothing setting.

This is wrong because "accurate to real life" is not a metric of quality for a video game. Fucking Ocarina of Time, Mario Galaxy 2, GTA Vice City etc, are not some of the best games of all time because they were the closest to real life at the time of release.
If you create the strongest motorcycle engine of all time, but it's so strong that it fucking bucks you off, every time you try to accelerate even a little, then you have not made "a good game, but that much power is inherently problematic" you have in fact made: A shitty unridable motorcycle. Bethesda has in fact made: a shitty fucking video game. And lets be real: The fact that every non main city planet is a procedurally generated boring fucking rock, making these parts of the game boring as shit, is far from the only problem this game has. It's not like if you made space exploration exciting, then you'd have a good game on your hands. The game has a laundry list of issues, (and I'm not talking about bugs and glitches). Space being fucking boring is just the most obvious for the "normie" crowd that's not into media analysis. Stuff that the kind of people who say: "Star Trek Picard season 3 was really good, actually" will notice.

He isn't wrong. Space is boring. It's literally a massive expanse of NOTHING.
Likewise, barren planets are also boring, because they have nothing on them.

The only way to make a space game entertaining is to not focus on the boring shit and instead focus on stuff like the characters, writing and what is happening. Which are all things Bethesda is notoriously bad at.
Starfield is shit because Bethesda picked a shit setting that they simply don't have the skill to make good.

My point is you can boil any simple concept down to being inherently boring. It's what you do with them that makes them fun. Just having a gun isn't fun. Getting to shoot shit with it makes them fun. Just like this Starfield cope saying space is boring when they refuse to admit they are creatively bankrupt. There's literally hundreds of games that make space both fun and interesting, even some more modern games are using the concept of space way better than Starfield ever did.

This is just cope from bad devs, who know they made a bad, unappealing game nobody wants. A game nobody wanted. They have to justify why 5-10 years of their life/professional resume was spent on making bad and boring flops.

They're more than welcome to rip-off things like Freelancer. Or introduce more fantasy stuff in space if they wanted to make it easier. But they choose to make the most milquetoast thing possible. Out of what appears to be a fear of offending anyone, or standing out. Not living up to their potential to dream of something more, than their innate desire to punch in and out of work on time.

What is even the conflict in Starfield? I hear nobody talk about the story. The writing I have seen makes the cast and plot to Fallout 3 look like a masterclass of fiction. It was that bland.

Usually with projects like these, there's something to take away from the concept phase. Something 'cool' or novel that helped convinced execs to throw money at it.

But this whole thing just feels like the boardroom declared, "WE MUST ALSO SECURE THE SCI-FI AUDIENCE." From moguls who thought they would gain total market control on all game sales, with the Veilguard release monopolizing fantasy in California.

I wouldn't call it super boring. But does go to show just how far you can take tribal desert nomad wanking. Arrakis is 99% desolate. But it has movies. It has extended lore. It has a variety of video games, fan-made spinoffs, and porn. All of it based around this largely empty, arid ass planet with natives that fetishize water. A place that would otherwise be infinitely tedious, and awful to be stranded on.

It's a testament to what you can do, taking a simple core and absolutely running with it. Fleshing it out.

Starfield couldn't even do that.

Make Constellation a group of scientists, get some people with science background to write dialogue for them, make a bunch of quests relating to figuring out shit about planets and aliens with science, shit like that.
Instead the game is about you roaming the galaxy massacring entire colonies of 'bandits', as that is what you mostly do in it.

The fact you don't need to worry about fuel and travel is just a loading screen simulator is entirely Todd's fault. Thats because fun, exiting and intresting worlds needs much more work and brain to devise.
Some people arent fans of colorful space operas but theres always some kind of room when it come to this stuff, some kind of golden rule.
Hard scifi is shining when its done in early spacefaring age, think our solar system.
When it comes to later stages biotech, ai, robot, nanotech willbprobably allow/force us to go transhuman. And what bethesda do? Make npcs thata literalylifted of some kirgistan village.
Give us aliums withdifferent factions, cultures, goals. Give us a spaceship and a crew to complete a merc group. Make some stakes ansd story that will happen and that we can change or exploit.

>Well, it probably is if you use generative technology to randomize the worlds instead of creating them with some sort of intent.
Genuinely the best approach is to artificially generate a lot of worlds to hide the actual content and make that part of the general challenge of the game. Space is really big and a lot of planets aren't going to contain much more than a bunch of minerals to mine, but that doesn't mean there isn't exciting stuff to find.

Again, Star Control 2 did this amazingly literally decades ago. All they had to do was copy that general structure.
>>

EVERY setting has to be fantastical to be fun:
- space without fantasy is just failing to land on dead rocks (and IF you finally succeed gathering dirt to analyzed over the next 10 years)
- medieval setting without fantasy is just getting stabbed once and then dying of disease (and IF you succeed you get home to the sweet smell of poop streets and your cheating wife's hemlock brew)
- modern warfare setting is hundreds of hours of being bored in desert heat until you get blown up by random IED (and IF you succeed you get home to the sweet smell of PTSD therapy and your wife's new boyfriend)

Everything can be shit if you go full simtroon. If you don't, you need a dash of fantasy. Usually aliens for space-based sci-fi, magic / monsters for medieval, and quirky guns / gadgets for modern settings.
Saying "space is inherently boring" makes it sound like space settings are odd ones out in terms of how inherently boring they are. They're not.

Bethesda intentionally made the majority of worlds empty shitholes, because they believed their userbase would mod the game like crazy, and use that empty canvas to make a universe of stories.

Nope. Starfield was doomed at the planning stage with Bethesda removing one thing they arguably do well - the world to traverse. No amount of work can make Starfield a good game (as made by Bethesda).

You could do fun shit with a 'grounded' space game

You would need a vision, and probably have gameplay surrounding needing to survive the infinite vacuum of space

Managing O2, atmospheric pressure, avoiding dying from being burns or freezing to death, etc, radiation, flying space junk, etc. Every gunshot wound could be a death sentence

It would be super autistic but it's more interesting than treating space like a fucking bouncy castle.

Space is the ultimate playground as far as settings go. You can wedge in damn near anything you want and no one will ever be able to say "that wouldn't make sense" because no one can hop into a ship and prove you wrong.

This video looks weird but it's propellant dispersing in a near vacuum illuminated by the sun that you can't see due to the curve of the planet you're standing on. Earth is blocking the sun from your perspective but from that height the sun illuminates the rocket and propellant cloud quite well. Each of those ripples is the booster shooting out propellant to adjust course so that it can safely land on the barge and be re-used. The barge landing and re-use process is a cost reduction strategy.

starfield's gunplay, persuasion system and character/background creator are all the best BGS has ever done. it's also got some of the best space piracy mechanics on the market - disabling an enemy ship, boarding it and clearing it room-by-room in zero-G is something starfield does better than virtually any other game

He's not wrong that open space is fucking boring, but it doesn't excuse the game at all. It's obvious that space is boring, and a game specifically about traveling through space is retarded. NMS is still shit no matter how they much they fix and build upon it, because generic space is not fucking fun. Every scifi story with a scale beyond Earth and a focus on space travel takes enormous effort to make the new settings interesting and relevant, it takes a ton of writing and development to make the audience want to care. You can't just auto generate garbage and expect the audience to make its own fun out of that garbage, and mods cannot make up for the lack of writing and worldbuilding.

Starfield just makes you do a shitload of work to go do anything interesting.
That's why Mass Effect ditched the fuckass Mako after the first game and you just land at places of interest and explore small areas.
Skyrim had a medium density but at least didn't make traversal completely miserable despite your options basically being on foot and horse so there was decent pacing and downtime between traveling and dungeons/towns/combat encounters, Fallout 4 had insanely high content density.
Maybe space is just cursed. Starfield has the Bethesda systemic autism but shitloads of dead space so there's nothing interesting going on. Outer Worlds is dense but boring.

At least for now you can take solace that Skyrim 2 and Fallout whatever the fuck will not have you fucking around between different planets. Probably.

I'll admit NMS planets aren't super interesting and they do get same'y quite fast, but they are miles better than Starfield's, even ignoring the fact that Starfield doesn't actually have planets you can traverse, just 5 sqaure miles randomly generated maps. You can't circumvent a planet in Starfield, in No Man's Sky you can (but doing it on the surface of the planet would take a lot of time)

Being able to traverse an entire planet in NMS is one of the reasons it sucks. I want a space sim, and part of that is a decent simulation. One does no traverse an entire planet on foot, or in a small buggy. If they planet is so small that you can do that, it sucks. NMS is a space sim game without any simulation
-No actual suns
-No planet orbit
-Planets aren't scaled even halfway believably
-Solar systems are so packed together that planets would fall into each other's grav wells
Its a space sim for babies. Its the jangling, plastic, keys, for infants, of space sims. Elite Dangerous is better.

Every time one of their games launched, you'd have people experiencing issues, and the immediate response was always
>mods will fix it
and you'd have these massive unofficial patches that picked up the slack, fixing a ton of fucked up shit that Bethesda never got around to addressing
After a time, they began to buy into the hype, but didn't observe the diminishing modding base over the years, and now we're at the point where nobody WANTS to mod this shit, and we're just left with an unfinished product

You lack volumetric imagination. The lighting isn't uniform. The image is a processed render of light sources over a period of months and what you see are the captured lights of various distances and occlusions.

the modding base in Bethesda games has only gone up.

Starfield is like the 10th most modded game on the Nexus, and getting frequent free and paid creations, as well as the same unofficial patch every other game has gotten.

If you're going to lie, at least make up a lie that can't be disproven in 10 seconds.

would you be interested in explaining to the class, how a game that never gets talked about, ever, actually has people that care about it (well, beside the N*Sfag trying to advertise the game in starfield threads)
>>
>>746718816
>Starfield is the 10th most modded game on the nexus
>13.6k mods, 196m downloads
Abso-fucking-lutely pathetic in comparison to other Bethesda games, beating out only Morrowind in DOWNLOADS, but still losing in terms of mods(15.9k/133.7m). I guess it also beats FO76, but that's an online game you can't really modify beyond making ore resources glow, a chat function, or superficial texture mods.
>Starfield promptly gets mogged by (In order)
>#9 FO3 (17k/201m)
>#8 Oblivion (33k/339m)
>#7 BG3 (19k/525m)

>#5 FONV (41k/1.3b)

>#2 FO4 (76k/2.4b)
>#1 Skyrim SE (138k/12b)
Starfield should have at least been #3/4/5, this is a fucking mdoern BETHESDA game we are talking about; you can point at the thousands of other rando games it does eclipse, but nobody gives a fuck about the modding scene of Crypto Mining Simulator, or Pro Evolution Soccer 5, that's fucking cope.

Fallout and Skyrim have much more established IPs, years of previous modding culture, and Starfield is a much more niche space sim game.
>>
fantasy fags are getting way too uppity.
most fantasy is just using reality as a basis then changing things that you find unfun about it. how many fantasy worlds do you see out there that are completely different from reality? barely any because if the setting isn't believable enough, it's unappealing.
realism isn't inherently unfun and if you think like that you are retarded as fuck.
>>
>>746720530
You did.

You tried to dispute
>N*Sfag seriously believes anyone knows the game exists

Nobody knows the game exists, anon. Not a single person on a top 50 website on the internet by traffic has mentioned N*S

Know why? The only people playing some brokie game are turdie brokies who play whatever they can get for <$5. Their existence doesn't matter.

Nobody reads anymore either.

Acclaimed sci fi shows, films, and games were often influenced by the great sci fi minds of the past

Harlan Ellison, Phillip K. Dick, Aasimov, Clarke, Heinlein, Gibson, Card, Herbert, etc.

People all get their media digitally, and when they 'want' to read they use a fucking audiobook

Reading is considered too much work nowadays, same with critical thinking. Just make the slop and shut your mouth

(Obviously referring to the AAA devs of the industry)
>>
>>746720694
People knowing the game exists isn't the same as people caring about it. People know it exists because of its infamous launch. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear
>>
And if you're curious to why Ranjeesh has been losing his everloving shit about NMS for hours now, it's because of this.
>>
>>746720706

>>
>>746720962
when was the last time NMS topped revenue on steam or the PS store
>>
>>746695238
Real life space is fascinating because its the final (and most hostile) frontier. If you want to base a setting on real space but strip away all the perils of actual space travel of course its going to be boring.
>>
>>746721126
Is your argument about how many people play the game or how much money is getting squeezed out of its players?
>>
>>746721243
answer the question, m'am
>>
>>746720962
This argument is pretty stupid since something like 70%+ of starfield players play on Goypass which isn't tracked on Steam, whereas NMS has no Goypass version.

But anyone posting Steam charts/player count shit should be banned in general. It isn't an argument regardless of which is higher.
>>
