Based on my reading of the game, I believe that the ritual DID work in the sense that the main protagonist after the death ritual received help from the other two in the coven and granted the protagonist time projection magick.The protagonist seems to be very capable at Telekenisis, and given how its recognized in universe that Mesmer and The Creature recognize that there is no way you as the protagonist should be aware of certain information along with the fact that the souls of Milady and Mirphie appear to you and only to you suggests that when you finish the ritual with Mesmer that THIS is the in game explanation for why you can jump from one memory to the next.Like maybe the most heightened form of Telekenisis is being able to move your soul/mind through time, and it would also explain why the only "real" cutscenes that you get for reaching the ending that arent just treated as a gag are the true ending and the one where you die by ritual(plus the effigies of Milady and Mirphie do appear when the ritual happens)It would also explain why by the end of the game the protagonist somehow no longer has control of the time loop. Like the time loop in itself has never been seen as a "problem" the protagonist has to fight with like in Groundhog Day, its more treated like an opportunity to change fate. But when you finally solve the problem the protagonist is stuck with having to move on from Mesmer, which is why he continually goes back to the house after the game is done as a means of cope
