The fact that so many youtubers still name Super Mario 64 as "the greatest" or most significant or most influential video game ever only tells you how far video games still are from becoming a serious art. Critics have long recognized that the greatest examples of a medium of all time are not necessarily the most famous or profitable or best-selling ones, let alone the ones that had the greatest impact on the industry. Yet when it comes to video games, critics are still blinded by historical importance and commercial success. Super Mario 64 revolutionized 3D platforming and sold millions, therefore it must have been the greatest game.

Critics of older art forms grow up experiencing a great deal of the art of the past. They know the obscure composers, the difficult novels, the unpopular painters, the works that failed commercially but survived because they were artistically important. Video game critics, by contrast, are often remarkably ignorant of the history of games. They barely know anything beyond the canonical best sellers. They know Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VII, Halo, and a handful of other famous games, and mistake familiarity with the canon for knowledge of the medium.

No wonder they think Super Mario 64 did anything worthy of being saved. It was enormously influential, yes. It established conventions that countless later games copied, yes. But influence is not the same thing as greatness, and historical importance is not the same thing as artistic achievement. If critics actually knew the full history of video games, rather than merely its greatest hits, they might be less impressed by Super Mario 64.

Name a more fun game.

You wrote an entire novel and managed to say absolutely nothing at the same time. What a pointless fucking thread, fuck you OP.

>30 year old game in a total market of about only 45 year old games is objectively best and there is no way you can even make an opinion (reddit can make an opinion about this game...) to discredit it!

Shit in your hand and throw it at the wall, thats art.

that unironically says a lot about the society that enables it and the person who decided to make it, it's a genuine piece of art
>>
>>746700002
except lost levels besides super mario world 2 (and also the fight wario game) was the only unique idea... i guess you could say super mario bros 3 is almost okay but its a bit hokey

One thing that became clearer to me as I grew and my tastes developed and matured as I learned to appreciate greater varieties of things in all their nuance and complexity, is that Nintendo are just damn good.

It's entirely possible that someone might have preferences that lead them away from Nintendo if they happen to enjoy particular things that are different, but it's certainly not an indicator that Nintendo is inherently immature given the actual overall quality they are capable of in such a wide variety of areas. The only way to really grow out of Nintendo (unless you go beyond videogames entirely) is if you fail to see the depth and refinement that's actually there in their great titles, and mistakenly their childlike presentation as evidence they offer nothing worthwhile.

Scaruffi himself enjoys N64 games and sees OoT as something far superior to any of the Beatles music.

Nintendies never maturing and finding ever increasing excuses for why they only like children's games is actually very sad
>>
>>746700285
when you stop gargling on Nintendos asian micropenis and see that it's just a nostalgia milking company with barely anything innovating going for it unlike the nintendo of old, don't come back and bitch about it on /v/

How much of a newfag do you have to be to not recognize by the first half sentence that OP just rewrote the old Beatles copypasta.

Anon, if you want Games as Art, yes, Mario 64 was the peak. Video games are not painting, music, books, or movies. They are a separate medium that peaked during this era because of the limitations of hardware. Video games used to be art and made by passionate people. Now they are corporate and sterile for the most part and it's that reason that no one considers modern games as are and more as products.

I know it's bait but knowing some people out there actually think like this and are allowed to vote is scary
>>
>>746704496
He's right though. Mario 64 was a self published work by a team of less than 100 people. That's practically an indie game by today's standards.
>>
It holds up to this game. The fact that nintendo managed to do 3d platforming on their first try is that impressive. The fact that few manage to produce a game of similar quality to this day makes it even more impressive. I emulated it recently and it's one of the best 3d platformers I've played if not the best. Controlling the character is way more fun compared to many recent games including shit like Hat in Time or what have you.

i have never cared about video games being seen as art

this was the state of 3D action games before Mario 64.
Mario 64 was the Citizen Kane of 3D action games.
>>
>>746706097
>Citizen Kane
so you're saying it's overrated trash?
>>
>>746706097
It's funny how every console manufacturer from the 80's all the way to the late 2000's just copied what Nintendo was doing in regards to controllers.
>>
>>746699414
The Wizard of Oz gets the same treatment for being one of the first color movies that was good. Pioneers are remembered fondly
>>
Scaruffi actually considers Mario 64 to be a work of art.
>>
>>746706436
>Professional fart sniffer who likes AI actually considers Mario 64 to be a work of art.
yeah that doesn't help SM64 in any way

I can't take this seriously when "Best movie ever is Citizen Kane/Godfather" is still a mainstream movie critic opinion. And I say that as somebody who really likes both movies.
>>
>>746699414
Shut the fuck up.
>>
>>746706579
I still fully get why someone would nominate Godfather for that, but Citizen Kane feels like a pseud answer unless we’re explicitly talking about most influential movies. Many ”pioneer” works like that are still good, which is a testament to their importance, but Citizen Kane is more like inventor than perfector.

You know you could have skipped over the shit about SM64 and talked about how youtube is an astroturfed shithole and basically any "popular opinion" is total bunk, but instead you decided to cry like a bitch and still promote the retardation that Super Mario 64 invented the concept of 3D games when even a basic understanding of professional game development at the time, not even historical accounts of why that's an unfathomnably retarded thing to say would simply destroy the idea.

Good, I don't want games to be considered because then all you'd get is dogshit like last of us, games should be fun, like mario 64
