Multiplayer video games are in a tragic situation where they constantly need new content and shakeups to keep players engaged, which robs them of stabilizing into a format like sports or chessI think about how Overwatch was at its most fun equilibrium before Ana was added, and how every new hero and patch had to address the imbalance she introduced in a drastic seesaw motion never to stabilize, and how Overwatch will never be its pre-Ana peak again like how TF2 has a set cast of characters, and even TF2 was ruined by items
>>746710514Them not being sports is what keeps them back from things sports enjoys.
>>746710514arena shooters stabilized the formula, can you tell me where they are now?
it's not the games, it's the audiencejingling keys is what wins over a playerbase these days
>>746711192Yeah. As soon as the first few characters were added, that became the whole purpose to most of the audience. Just wondering who they are going to add next immediately after the last one. Rocket League hasn’t fundamentally changed at all and people still play it.
>>746711192No, it's the developers, not the audience. It's the developers and publishers that want infinite money from a casual fanbase they milk forever.>>746710514There are games that have done this. Brood War, or Smash Bros. Melee have been played for like decades with no new content and effectively no changes. The audiences are of course small and dedicated but that's how you get that kind of stability. It's the developers that want a large casual base without autistic single-focus attention spans, reaching into their wallets and buying stupid shit.I've reached the point where I think multiplayer games are even more disposable than singleplayer games, and I'm fine with that. I think it's perfectly acceptable to have a game that you pick up, play for a few months, and then put away. You keep the fond memories and then the playerbase dwindles and you can't really experience it anymore. But there's nothing wrong with that. Not everything has to be a lifestyle game demanding all of your time and attention forever.
Pretty wild how drastically a game can change in a short time because the OW I had fun with hasn't existed for 10 years even though the game is still technically playable
>>746713643same. the players? it's the game that changed and i did not like how.
>>746710514Depends on the game dev. Valve games like dota and counter strike change quite little and slowly over time compared to say league of legends or valorant.
>>746710514overwatch died when they forced ranked roles and no dupes on casual mode.
>>746710514>replace community servers is MMR>use Ai to censor chat>ban global chat>open regional MM to the entire world to pad your player count>cross play with console shitters>wonder why no one talks/cares anymore>wonder why game quality dropped off a cliffMany such cases.
>>746710514Dive meta in 2017 was fun because it kept her in check so you'd only really only play ana on like a few maps over lucio
>>746713958>casual>add a bunch of rules to force players to mimic the competitive mode>which is only that way due to artificial rules in the first placetalk about misunderstanding the assignmentit's remarkable how badly blizzard mismanaged ow's initial success
