Why do people praise this game so much and claim it's the best Zelda?
Because Ocarina is the best Zelda and people love to be contrarian.
cuz its atmospheric and cool
>>746725675Because it is
>>746725675only nintendo game with depth
>>746725675play it and find out for yourself
>>746725675People putting way too much stock into im14andthisisdeep Tower of Babel theories.
>>746725675I beat Castlevania 1 and the moon boss reminded me of Majora's Mask. Anyone else?
>>746725892Are there even any big MM theory discussions that aren't based on Ikana/Stone Tower? Seems like nobody gives a shit about any of the other regions of the game
>>746725675because it's darker and edgier and liking dark and edgy things makes me look cool and interesting
Because it's good. It maintains the things Ocarina already did well and adds an ambitious scheduling system that is still unique among games today, and it deals with emotional themes in a mature way that is still rare among games today.Ocarina is praised for laying the foundation that most 3D action games would build on, Majora STILL provides an experience that hasn't been replicated.
Best storyNo triforceNo saving the princessNo evil king
>>746725675Because they are contrarian trannies and it's the least like your normal Zelda.
Why do people say that grass is green?
>>746726058>>746726113Zelda fans not be gay challenge
>>746725675The only good Zelda games are the ones without Ganondorf.
>>746726098>No triforce>No saving the princess>No evil kingAnd people will tell you that BotW and TotK are not real Zeldas.
>>746726058>because it's darker and edgierit's not
It has a unique gimmick. Most of OoT's clones and successors are interchangeable, I'm not sure what tried to copy MM.
>>746725675Because it's the only console game between Link to the Past and Breath of the Wild that's isn't just a Link to the )set remake
>>746725675Better than OoT in styleWorse than OoT in gameplay
>>746726165>no nothing
>>746725675They like the unique 3-day time travel structure. I don’t, but they do.
>>746725675
Saving the world as a small child is an epic experience.
Am I crazy to think the Ocarina of Time remake will be bundled with a Majora's Mask remake
>>746726165But it had boss keys, while BotW and TotK didn't.Checkmate.
>>746725675That’s the game I’m currently playing, it has spurts of brilliance like the couple reuniting when there’s only an hour left before the moon falls very beautiful moment and the final dialogue with the ranch sisters. But too many baffling anti-fun decisions a lot of the pieces of hearts are way too annoying, the Couple Mask questline is really cool and involved but there’s a lot of standing around waiting for specific times (like the spa doors only open at 1pm) and doing it without a guide must be agonizing. The stray fairies make dungeons extra awful, the great bay temple in particular was an awful experience. OOT major problem was having to switch around items too often with only 3 item mapping options, and MM makes that 1000x worse. The switching back time mechanic is neat but I don’t like how your items disappear and you have to bank your rupees every time. Really annoying I had to kill the mountaintop boss like 3 times to thaw the ice because not even boss kills are saved. The minigames are the worst in the series, I don’t know if it’s just the emulation but the shooting gallery’s are torture only manageable with save scums. I can tell this is a very intelligently created game lots of creativity but it’s also painful, the Goron mask is probably my favourite Zelda item in the franchise.
>>746725675>Why do people praise this game so much and claim it's the best Zelda?it has vastly more shit to do than Ocarina of Time. i would conservatively say the amount of content is 4x larger.the different masks all do cool stuff, especially the race masks or whatever you call them - deku mask, goron mask, zora mask, etc.zooming around through the fields of Termina as a Goron using the infinite mana from lon-lon ranch infinite mana milk is one of my favorite videogame memoriesit also has the best song in Zelda:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0krxH0dWhU
>>746727063>nintendo giving away anything extra for freeYes you are. It probably won't even have the master quest dungeons let alone an entire separate game.
>>746725675I like changing into things with masks
>I sure love farming for equipment after I go back in time!>I sure love having to restart a quest after the day changes!>I sure love having a time limit for a series known for exploration!>I sure love having to use a guide to find all the useless masks!>I sure love having only 4 shitty dungeons>I love standing around waiting for time to pass in the evening because I have nothing better to do while I wait for an NPC to catch up on their scheduleMM isn't good.
>>746727063Yes.You'll get master quest, like oot3d, and that's it.
>>746726474>Twilight at SOpinion discardedAlso I'm enjoying going through Skyward
>>746727248this
>>746725675Because it is. It does everything OOT does better and adds way more features and things to do on top of it.>>746727248>aaieeeeeeeee why do I have to stay on task and pay attention to things???Majora's Mask is the kryptonite of the ADHD and the brown.
>>746725675Because it’s one of the hardest Zelda games with little to no hand holding in recent years. The first Zelda’s don’t count because I said so.
>>746727660Stay on task and pay attention to things? You’re literally just standing there waiting for a specific time, and a lot of the time there is no way of knowing when a event will trigger like for example near the end of the Couple’s Mask questline you have to go back into the spa and see that Kafei left but the spa doors open randomly after 1pm with no way of knowing that considering they’re closed every other day. And then the game makes you do the quest A SECOND TIME to get the postman’s hat. This is the only time I can’t imagine barely anyone ever fully completing the is Zelda entry without a guide. (Other times it’s pretty intuitive like the dancer’s mask)
>>746725675It has the most interesting mechanics. There still isn't a single other game that does the same thing, or at least as well
games way better if you use a cheat for pause and control of timethere i said it
>>746725906what moon boss? huh?
>>746729628It dropped a bunch of human bodies
The Daggerfal of Zeldas
It's a really good game and it filters normies and zoomers alike which is always a plus.

>>746725757>you're contrarian if you prefer the game with objectively superior gameplay and atmosphere
people who don't read were very easily impressed by babby's first mortality allegory lmao
>>746727248you never played it
>>746729605How bad do you have to be to be filtered by the time limit lol
>>746725675Because Zelda games are mediocre, but MM is not a Zelda game, it merely wears the skin of one.Tendies are not ready for this conversation, however.
>>746726016Not reallyWhich is sad 'cuz I think the Great Bay temple is the most interesting location in the game. It's clearly a piece of advanced infrastructure that serves a purpose, unlike Woodfall and Snowhead, and to an extent even Stone Tower. Stone Tower is weird enough to get a pass, but Woodfall and Snowhead are pretty much just... temples. Random dungeons with no real purpose. And functional pieces of infrastructure are cool to me.
>>746730610https://youtu.be/8TTdLe0u9eo
>>746725675First Zelda game with a more modern understanding of design efficiency. There's not nearly as many weird asscracks that serve no purpose or big open empty areas with nothing in them, like OoT or WW has.Dungeons are also designed from the perspective of them being torn apart by showing up with later game items, which ironically makes the dungeons feel better designed. This isn't a bunch of rooms with keys the locked door hidden under the potted plant, for the purpose of being a puzzle, this is just how it's put together, and indeed if you just jump this fence you can blow through the dungeon in like 2 minutes.
>>746733621MM is just OOT dlc but if you wanna talk about "not zelda" zeldas then this is the answer
>>746734175lol modern
>>746725675It has dandori.
Its a great game that justifies itself. Just play it
>>746729674Nigga that's Symphony of the Night.
>>746725675It was like OOT but weirder, more stuff to do and a bigger emphasis on the world outside of just the dungeons. The time system was so cool and unique for the time, the routines of the npcs and the way the town and the world moves. I got this game back in 2000 for christmas after playing the shit out of ocarina of time. I really love this game so much bros.
buh buh buhbuhbuhdada da da
I'll bet you nobody ITT finished the game twice, that must be tedious to replay
>>746725675the pressure of a time limit keeps you engaged with the events of the world. the game rewarding you for picking up on its patterns. many characters having their own lives independent of Link which we can interact with. A darker and uncertain tone. more gameplay variety due to the masks. Outer Wilds is in a similar place. You either enjoy the pressure and learn to take your time and enjoy the little moments or you cant deal with the pressure and allow yourself to poison the experience.
>>746735351I’m playing it now and I am telling myself I will never play this game again, even 40 years from now
I am tired of the praise these two games get, let it go.
>>746727248Anybody that hates time limits has no worthwhile opinions on games.
>>746735351Not counting replays from when I was a kid playing on n64, since times were different. And also not counting randomizers. I have replayed this game 5 times.
>>746725675Better sidequests, better dungeons, better bosses(og version only), better minigames, better story, masks make gameplay nice. Actual stakes with the three days countdown. Better characters, better world. It's better, it has may have less but is more.Sometimes it can be frustrating but it is fair and you learn to adapt and appreciate. There is barely any handholding insulting your intelligence and it feels fantastic.
>>746735940>better dungeons, arguably too few of them though
>>746733621>>guy in green tunic swings sword>explore overworld>explore dungeons>solve puzzles with dungeon items>kill miniboss, get boss key, kill boss>collect all the dungeon thingies to get to final dungeon and boss>do sidequests to get heart pieces & shit like empty bottles to power-up It's very much a Zelda game
>>746735940the minigames are TRASH, the shooting gallerys expect you to be superhuman with junky aiming and decisions like the romantic duo game you have to beat all their games every day but then the last day involves bow & arrow which I didn’t have so I had to do it all over again. The crowning jewel of shot design is the spider houses absolute slogmaxing and then bizarrely the one by the lake if you don’t complete in one day then you have to do it all over again which happened to me cus I made the mistake of starting it at night. Some are ok like goron racing
>>746736597i did all of these when I was 10 years old
>>746736796>3DS versionYou didn't beat the game
>>746725675Less dungeons and more focus on the world. Dungeons are always the least interesting part of any Zelda game.
>>746736868>2000>3ds version
>>7467368683DS is the best version, sorry but that's facts
>>746736796I want you to go download project 64, vim’s lair majora mask, boot it up and get the bow&arrow, go to the swamp shooting gallery, NO save states, and tell me that isnt the most ball breaking shit ass minigame ever put in a Zelda title. No way kids were doing that unless the controls were just so much smoother on n64
>>746725675it's cozy
>>746725675because I like itand it's a pretty original game, I don't recall any other game that did the time travel thing as well
>>746737152Just learn the patternThe birds the wolf and the deku scrubs. It's meant to be played multiple times until you learn when each targets appears and their route. It's meant to be optimized.Back when gaming wasn't about instant gratification
>>746737152for some reason the controls for the emulator suck ass, it's different on the n64
>>746737152brother i maxed mm again last year, the only part I recall wanting to kill myself over was the goron dungeon on the moon
Yeah just play the 3DS version if you're just gonna emulate the original
I always thought garo were super underused
>>746737428I’m on ikana valley right now just before light arrows, I’m hoping to finish it today hopefully whatever that goron thing is isnt too bad because goron ball controls is one of the few things that actually controls alright
>>746737152>No way kids were doing that unless the controls were just so much smoother on n64They were. N64 stick doesn't translate to modern sticks at all. Go ahead, try playing the first stage of Goldeneye with a regular controller and see for yourself how cancerous it is. Some emulators have settings to calibrate and have it feel a bit better, but it's still nowhere like the real deal.
>>746734815I wish I didn't have as many dandori issues with pikmin 2, dropped it cause I got filtered by the bulborb bitch in hole of heroes every time she crashed into a wall and rocks fell down, and even when I call my pikmim back some still decide to just stand there and get crushed from her rolls. How do I get better anons?
>>746727248I honestly wish more games had time limits like that. Unlimited time makes open world games feel so stagnant and like nothing ever gets done unless the player does all the work. Example. Fallout 1 had a time schedule. If you don't make it to necropolis fast enough everyone gets killed in a big battle you can just completely miss. Idk I think that's more realistic.
>>746737630it's optional unless you want the fierce diety mask (which makes the final boss completely trivial, though it's not hard either way) but I found it ridiculously annoying because it's unforgiving and very precise or you fall and start at the begining
>>746727248you never played it, items and time specially are never an issue
>>746736953ThisMost Zelda games have 1, maybe 2 good dungeons, amid the shitty ones. They're shitty for a variety of reasons, most often either being early game, so there just isn't much complexity that can be added, since you have maybe 2 items to solve everything with, or else they overcommit to a theme, which means every room is basically the same. Usually one or two mid-late game dungeons actually hit a balance where they engage multiple items and perspectives, with flexible enough theming that you can actually get a bunch of different ideas working at once. Majora's Mask suffers from the early dungeon problem with Woodfall, but all three of the others are high quality. They just cut the bullshit dungeons for the most part, and left the ones they actually made to span a bunch of different core items and puzzle styles, and then kept that shit boxed up. Evil Majora's Mask would be a Link Between Worlds, where there are like a dozen dungeons, that are all irredeemable dogshit, because each one is built like an early game dungeon that hyperfocuses on one specific item, and there's very little game outside of them.
tried to play it when the recomp came out, but i just couldn't stand the shitty goron race, difficult minigames, bullshit backtracking for zora eggs, yeah nah that's a no from me
I had lotsa fun with the Switch Online version, yes you get savestates & shit but it's up to you not to abuse them they can enhance your experience when used right. To experiment. Yes I pay 35 bucks a year to Nintendo to play games I may already own and can get ROMs for free if you know where to look but I don't own a steam deck or a decent widescreen New 3ds XL and all those games are more enjoyable in handheld mode than on a crappy computer screen. To me my money was well-spent than if I had bought any modern slop that would have disappointed me
>>746725675Most fleshed out world and NPCsBest swimming controlsBest land traversalDoes something unique and cool that isn't Ganon in Hyrule for the millionth timeMost varied gameplay with the mask transformationsThe last Zelda game before Aonuma kiddified the series, and isn't badly written and tryhard like TP Some of the best optional content in any game, let alone a Zelda gameThe most iconic time travel system in any gameReally, the only flaw with the game is only having 4 dungeons. But there's so much introductory content before every dungeon where you're exploring and learning about that area of Termina that other Zelda games just do not bother with, they made the most of the extremely limited development time.
Majora's Mask has the best story and gameplay in the entire series. Objectively speaking, it is the best.
>>746727248>>I sure love farming for equipment after I go back in time!It takes 1 minute. 5 if you're a cheapskate.>>I sure love having to restart a quest after the day changes!Only happens if you fucked up.Now you know what not to do next time. >>I sure love having a time limit for a series known for exploration!Spend a cycle exploring then>>I sure love having to use a guide to find all the useless masks! The guide is given to you ingame>>I sure love having only 4 shitty dungeons3 good dungeons is better than 10 shit ones>>I love standing around waiting for time to pass in the evening because I have nothing better to do while I wait for an NPC to catch up on their scheduleGo find something productive to doYou only spend time doing nothing for more than like 30 seconds if you are just not doing things with your time, or spending entire cycles doing one side quest at a time. In which case, you are CHOOSING to not explore and do the shit you are complaining about not having time to do, despite having time to waste.
>>746737674Use smaller squads of Pikmin. That's the secret hack for Pikmin 2. Bringing an army of 100 guys means pikmin are GOING to die to shit outside of your control. Take 10, maybe 15, and you have very comparable ability to get shit done, but are much much safer. And/or just abuse Purples. Purples are fucked up in 2.
Ocarina of Time is the greatest game of all time. But Majora's Mask is better.Does that mean Majora's Mask is the greatest game of all time?
It's so funny when people complain about the time limit because even if you are a slow retard the game gives you sooooo many "checkpoints" that allow you to skip a chunk of stuff during your next attempt.>Learn the area's song, can immediately start from the dungeon on your next loop.>Get the main dungeon item, can immediately skip half the dungeon on your next loop
>>746738543>Get main dungeon item>This usually means you can just move on to the next area outright>Go get thing from next area>Thing from next area means you can steamroll dungeon in like 5 minutesFor complaining about a lack of exploration, there's a whole lot of ignoring the fact that this game inherently lends itself to non-linear progression and moving between tasks at your own whims. Hell, bouncing out of Woodfall and Snowhead with the bow, then fire arrows and powder keg to pick up the Zora Mask and Hookshot are downright time economical. No dancing clowns tell you that you MUST complete dungeon 2 and 3 to access 4. And yet, the adherence to linearity.
It's pretty good. There's a lot of cool stuff to it, improvements over OoT, but after replaying both I was surprised to find it felt more railroaded and restrictive than its predecessor. You actually have to do certain things in order, whereas in OoT, I think you could finish temples in almost any order you like, aside from the Shadow Temple. In MM, for example, to get to the beach you have to clear the entire Snowpeak temple in order to be able to get the big bombs to go free Epona to hop over the fence. There are other things, like being unable to enter the Snowpeak region at all without the bow, fire arrows for the whole dungeon probably, ice arrows required to cross the river to Ikana. They did a good job of not making it feel that formulaic, despite the hard requirements to proceed and explore new areas.
>>746725675You're deranged.
going to play this soon, should I play the recomp or original
>>746725675It takes the OoT formula and arranges it enough and introduces concepts that allow it to stand out despite it being a lot of copying and pasting. The story on it's own isn't great so that's why the lingering threat of the moon and the dread of the people of Termina fill in those gaps to bring tension.
>>746739350RecompThe recomp adds some quality of life stuff, at least one or two aspects of which probably will end up appealing to you, whatever your preferences. Auto transferring money overflow to the bank, assigning items to the d pad as well to have more active items and less menuing, skipping the playback of some songs like the elegy of emptiness, feedback on pictograph shots counting as you take them, stuff like that.
>>746739862All of which are toggleable, I should add, so you can pick and choose what you want.
>>746733825GBT is clearly some kind of water treatment plant.
>>746725675Why has this game concept never been explored since?
>>746740224Not even nintendo themselves can top it. Even though I hated feeling anxious and needing to rush through content because you're on a timer.Zelda is one of those heavily experimental series with each entry revolving around a central gimmick/game mechanic.
>>746740606I appreciate that they don't do the same thing over and over again, but a lot of the gimmicks might benefit from being revisited with modern technology/knowledge. Majora already did a lot with the NPC schedules, but it could be so much more intricate in a new game. I also wouldn't remind them revisiting sailing, or season-manipulation.
>>746740224
>>746725675Pretentious wankers>>746726069>schedulingHell yeah just what I want to do in a series where you're given a sword and shield and sent out into the world to save it- timekeep and wait for people to be the right place at the right timeMajora's Mask is a game for timecucks who value other people's time over their own
>>746725675Because the world moves around you instead of waiting frozen in time for player input, something very few games have even bothered to try
>>746738543I played it for the first time a few months ago, and not only did I complete every dungeon without having to reset, but I got all the fairies the first time aroundAnyone complaining about the time limit it is functionally retarded

>>746737152the old consoles had tuned response time windows because of how the signal to the CRT TVs workedThe CRTS effectively had no input lag to begin with, and the console's display hardware was pretty much locked in perfect sync with itself and the TV. >>746725675Because timers are great and make every most games better.
>>746753075The time rewinding stuff and Demisedorf being so ancient really made me think this had a chance of happening. No, it's Zelda that has a time travel adventure, by herself, and you only get random snippets of it...unless you buy TOTK's Hyrule Warriors companion game. The BOTW formula desperately needs someone to stir its soup.
>>746752025>Great Bay Temple is actually a really good dungeonI think it's a contender for the best 3D Zelda dungeon, period.
What makes Majora temples so good is that with the exception of Woodfall they all make you think about a central mechanism outside of the room you're currently in
>>746756790even woodfall has it with the wooden flower platform room but it isn't as complex as snowhead or great bay
>>746756790That's right, but a bit simply expressed. I would say they do the best job of expressing spatial reasoning in 3D. Yes, they make you think about a central mechanism, but the navigation that stems from said mechanism oftentimes extends a bit beyond JUST the mechanism as well, like how Snowhead's multiple levels usually have their own web of interconnected rooms aside from the central column, or how Great Bay expects the player to navigate the water flow in service of following the colored pipes to their intended destination. It's like the midpoint between the gimmicks of BotW's sacred beasts and being a traditional Zelda dungeon. It's good shit, and on top of all that are some of the more brutal bosses and minibosses in a 3D Zelda.
