I just started playing xenogears and I've heard this is meant to be "one of the greatest JRPG's of all time" so i've been trying to push through but i'm genuinely wondering, when does this game actually get good? I've just finished the part where you get kicked out of town and so far the pacing has been agonizingly slow and the random encounter rate is excruciatingly high. It doesn't help that i've been constantly running into the same 3 enemies this entire hour or so i've been playing the game. So, I really want to know does this game get any better or should I just cut my losses and drop it?

It is absolutely a high of highs for narrative/lore/presentation, but you really have to fight your way to that stuff. The game sets up a lot of interesting premises within the first 5-8 hours (I kinda forget how long it takes you to go through Kislev), and it absolutely pays all of them off. If you find yourself even kind of interested in what Fei's fuckin deal is by the time you leave the town/go through the forest, it pays off big. If you couldn't give less of a shit about it, and Citan/Ellie are of no interest, yeah you can probably turn it off.There's other setting stuff that is wonderful, but the throughline is definitely figuring out what the fuck is wrong with Fei and how that factors into the weird high concept stuff.
