If you actually played, or I'll be generous and just say you skipped through the text, you'd know besides Phantasy Star 1 having some storm trooper NPCs, the story is nothing like Star Wars.

Characters were allowed to have distinct personalities. Alys and Rune could be arrogant douchebags while being good people. Each character had a nice dynamic against each other. Even regular NPCs were memorable without being forced. The storytelling is excellent and for me it is the best one ever even nowdays.

Phantasy Star Blue Burst on GameCube is literally nostalgia kino (there is a private online server on PC version too), the first Phantasy Star Universe is okay and PS Zero on NDS is pretty good too. And if you are willing to play online, PSO2NG is to the series what FFXIV is to FF fans, those willing to get into it will find a lot of references over the whole series, the devs respect it's legacy

It's a series with a unique blend of sci-fi and fantasy that hasn't really been replicated since. Your magical swordswoman main character will casually board the space taxi to go to another planet so she can delve into a dungeon to free the mighty warrior who's been petrified by a curse to aid in her adventure. The games have standalone stories but are connected by a consistent setting and history that actually culminated in a satisfying finale. And Sega will never, ever do anything with it ever again.

unironically yes. Star Wars hit Japanese creative culture like a bullet to Kirk's neck. Plenty of Japanese creators of sci-fi games and media in the 80s and 90s pin Star Wars as their main inspiration. Phantasy Star is the obvious one, but it pops up in other places like inspiration for Vagrant Story.

No wonder they bundled a hintbook with that damn game. Still, it was a massive downgrade from the original. You'd think, newer console = better graphics, but they lost the cool 3D dungeons, and replaced the unique battle backgrounds with a single Tron-like grid. Most disappointing sequel ever.

It's eh. That's the best thing to say about. Not horrible - if you want horrible, go play Phantasy Star Gaiden from the game gear. That's a bad fucking game.
PS3 tried to be different, and didn't really succeed in most of the ways it tried, is the problem. The generations system is interesting though, since it results in branching stories that ultimately lead to the same place, and at least in the second generation, those stories are substantively different. The soundtrack was kinda mediocre for a PS entry, though the world theme does this interesting thing of adding an instrument for each party member, so you start solo, and wind up with five, and the song "evolves" with each new person. The combat's really meh and took out the visible models from 2 again. Technique system is not good, but they did a thing that lets you balance the strength of techniques against what you use and don't use, so that isn't wholely awful, etc.
You can play it. You won't despise it. You just won't have any particularly special memories of it either.
>>
>>747093932
Someone please post the "every town in PSIII" collage, it is fucking hilarious.
>>
>>747083564
Really good characters that banter but without overstaying their welcome, impressive visuals that hold up as the tail end of pixel art being mainstream, fantastic soundtrack by people who knew how to use the soundchip, well paced difficulty that wasn't particularly hard but did fuck you up sometimes, it just did well above average by pretty much every metric an RPG of the time could be measured by. Like Chaz is kind of a whiny little shit, but not to an annoying level, and he grows into his protagonist role in a way that I didn't really see again until Tales of the Abyss, and Luke was way more annoying to start. It also has the Macro system which I'm mad didn't just become a staple of similar battle systems.

the anime portraits and cutscenes drastically elevated it above its competitors
phantasy star always had a good setting, and good writing, but it was held back by mechanical issues and ui presentation quite heavily. like the lack of seeing character models when you were selecting actions, or the poor effects for abilities - just like dq in that regard, absolute dogshit battle screen in terms of visuals, the effects are all just lazy low effort rpg maker ass
4 completely rectified that which is why it is an exceptional game and pretty much everyone favourite
the stakes were higher, nei and alys were both done well before this kind of thing became remotely a consideration with ff7
and the characters are just very good, there is a lot of writing of characters from the pov of the writer, with no real commitment to the characters beliefs or behaviour as its own entity. ps4 characters are pretty well written with commitment to the characters as they are as people rather than just as a vehicle for the writer
and the ost is just insanely good, batters it out the fucking park for atmosphere whilst also being insanely melodic and memorable and all over the place
settled on this as my favourite game of all time years ago, a question that's always hard to answer "whats your favourite x/y/z" because there's usually a handful that are up there and its hard to choose

>>747084484
pso, and all games in that vein thereafter, is not the same as actual jrpg phantasy star. pso is still good, in completely different ways mostly again due to music and area design relying heavily on atmosphere - but it entirely lacks the story and characters, they are all irrelevant ass. and its not a jrpg, its an action game that's just about friendslop mmo farming drops with friends
>>
>>747095505
>get a normal ass guy in your party 85% into the game.
>no real reason for him to join you, other than he's just kind of there.

>implying PS combat is a strategic experience and not mashing through random encounters over and over again
>>
>>747090554
3d dungeon crawling is generally not good, the series was objectively correct to move away from it
lack of backgrounds is a step down, but now you get actual character sprites in battle and the characters actually have animations for attacks
i'll take that over backgrounds if i have to choose, it is drastically more important
>>
>>747083564
It has pretty incredible presentation, so much so that it still holds up fairly well today.

>>747084484
Phantasy Star Online and its derivatives have a very different appeal. That's not to say it's bad, but it's not really a continuation of the original Phantasy Star series in any meaningful way.

>>747088852
I actually like that the dungeons require some effort to navigate. The high encounter rate kills a lot of the fun of exploration, but the dungeon layouts themselves are pretty good for the most part.

>>747093932
On paper, it's a really cool game with a ton of innovative features. In practice, literally everything about it is executed poorly. It's not irredeemable garbage, but it's also really not worth playing.

Star Ocean's different. It's usually space dudes getting stranded in fantasy settings, maybe with a slightly more advanced area at some point later. It's not really the same as going to the cloning labs to grow yourself a replacement for your dead party member before handing them a mythril sword and taking on cyborgs with fire magic. Even Shadowrun doesn't go that far in being schizophrenic with its sci-fi/fantasy elements.

>>
>>747096650
different setting concept entirely, star ocean is 70% "you're on a medieval planet and cant use guns and technology shhhh"
the combat is also very hit or miss, if its not 3 or 4 its literally just spam r2 the entire game - and even in 3 and 4 it becomes spam r2 eventually
i love star ocean, but it is not the same. at no point do you get a fucking landrover in starocean to drive around the planet, at no point do you get a hydrofoil. any implementation of "quests" like in so5 is just mmo kill x or fetch milk dogshit, the hunters guild is not like that
the games are almost not similar in any way
>>
>>747097149
>>implying PS combat is a strategic experience and not mashing through random encounters over and over again
It literally is, you aren't "mashing" in ps4, you have macros for that exact reason, and those macros 50% of the time are set up so they create combo moves between characters which is, by definition, strategic

it has a terrible english localization and pretty shit animations compared to the other ps games. but the original japanese story and the japanese book lore released in the media mix around the game is some of the most interesting in the series. The scenario writer of PSO Akinori Nishiyama said that PSIII also greatly influenced the writing of PSO.

Apparently the japanese devs did because they wrote アメリカはオハイオ in the lorebook lol.
They also confirmed that the ancient algolian language is english in the japanese ending of PSIII where the android Shiren (Wren) translates communications from the "London Communications Center" while mentioning that the language is "Greatly similar to the language of ancient Algol".
Phantasy Star III and this lore book both released in 1990.

>it wouldn't even crack the top 10 rpgs on the console
idk, when i played these games in the late 1990s i thought ff6 and chrono trigger are clearly above ps4 but i did like ps4 more than pretty much all of the not ff or chrono snes jrpgs i tried, including secret of mana and its japan-only sequel (completed them eventually but kinda middling stories and characters), terranigma (dropped mid-game), or breath of fire (dropped very early), or lufia (also dropped early)
ps4 gameplay has some issues but the really story sucked me in. the more limited graphics hardware of genesis/smd vs snes shows but if ps4 was made for the snes that wouldn't have been an issue. same for music if you don't like fm synthesis but i thought they made pretty good use of the worse sound hardware
english translation felt awkward at times but every jrpg on snes had shit translation too except ff6 and chrono

did any jrpg on snes even have anyhing like ps4's comic book style intermissions in it?
>>
oh right som too had an okay localization since it was done by woolsey, but other than those 3 the english text was always just as shit or worse than in ps4

What writing there was in PSO was really, really different, what with black paper and the experiments.

I'm gonna explain some deep lore from the japanese side of things.
First I must start with the history of some Kanji, chinese characters that Japan also uses in writing. It actually is important here.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_views_on_sin
The first Qin emperor Qin Shi Huang 秦始皇 forbid using zui 辠 "crime", which graphically resembled huang 皇 "emperor" in his name, and replaced it with zui 罪.
The Chinese character 罪 for zui combines wang 罒 or 网 "net" over fei 非 "wrong", ideographically depicting, "A 网 net used to capture the criminal who has done 非 wrong".

In Phantasy Star II's futabasha novelization. While explaining the Nei weapons Lutz explains to the main character Eusis that "Nei" means "あらず" (arazu) which in kanji is the character 非 (arazu). And this gets repeated by the elders in PSIII where they refer to the Nei weapons as "ぶきにあらず" or "arazu as weapons". Pic related is the page from the Phantasy Star II novel where Lutz explains the meaning of "Nei".
ネイ、つまり__に’あ’ら’ず’という意味を持つ武器、ネイ・ソードとネイ・シールドを!
Nei, or rather__weapons whos name means にあらず(of 非,un-, mistake, negative, injustice, non- ), Nei Sword and Nei Shield!
And now as I explained earlier the arazu 非 character was historically used to create the 罪 character which is read as "tsumi" in japanese. The same "tsumi" as in PSO's "Tsumikiri J-Sword". The japanese discription of its precursor the Sealed J-Sword even says that it is engraved with the mark of sin "罪".
And that is why the Tsumikiri J-Sword is most likely the same sword as Orakio's black Nei Sword from Phantasy Star III.

in the japanese version of PSO during the Seek My Master quest they tell the legend of the four swords. In that legend they explain that there was a war 1000 years ago that destroyed another planet before they came to Coral. The official PSO artbook further explains that the Miyama family has deep connections to the old lost planet. The characterization of Zoke Miyama with his loyal android Shino that has served the Miyama family for hundreds of years implies that the Miyama family may be the last of the Orakian lineage. There is an official PSO manga published by SEGA that shows Zoke entering the ruins and clashing with Kireek where Kireek stole the Soul Eater from the ruins before the battle training quest begins. Zoke knew exactly what the item was, even mentioning the grave of its prior owner. Zoke seems to have known everything about Ragol and the Ruins and he was likely searching for the Tsumikiri Nei Sword to handle Dark Falz himself. Zoke was likely the one that resealed the ruins door (unknowingly behind Rico) before the player unlocks it again. Within that context Zoke's death in seek my master was like the main character dying and leaving everyone behind in a doomed world.

going on the japanese seek my master narrative after one of the endings of PSIII the survivors of the Alisa III worldship settled on an unnamed planet. Then at least 1000 years after that Dark Falz awakened and manipulated the population into a war that forged the legend of the four swords and ended with the planet's destruction and the populace moving to planet Coral. Of the four legendary swords Oroti Agito in particular was an attempt to copy the Orakio's Nei Sword which had come to be known as Tsumikiri and may even have been the sword that is said to have destroyed the planet. The old Miyama family, descended from Orakio, was likely involved with the secret sealing away on Ragol of Dark Falz along with Tsumikiri and the Soul Eater/Soul Banish while the population migrated to settle on planet Coral. another 1000 years later a D-Cell infested meteorite, a fragment of the destroyed planet crashes into planet Coral and causes another crisis and war that threatens the planet while also starting an arms race on photon technology developed from research on the D-Cells. A probe searching for more D-Factor rediscovers Ragol, the place where their ancestors had secretly sealed Dark Falz away and an arms race greed fueld scientific expedition is launched under the guize of a new migration effort. then PSO begins.

In the japanese Phantasy Star III script they make a big deal about power existing in names and symbols. The elders say that they had to keep the true name of "Nei" hidden until it was absolutely needed because it could easily become something bad. When "Nei" is finally invoked it spontaneously awakens the knowledge of Grants, the light technique.
And earlier in the plot when the main character reaches the temple where Dark Falz and Orakio's black Nei Sword are sealed away. When the character takes hold of the sword they notice an etching that speaks to them "My name is Dark Falz." and then laughter rings out as Dark Falz celebrates that his name is free in the world again and thus he has been let loose.
非 symbolizes Nei and 罪 could symbolize Dark Falz sealed within the darkened Nei Sword. A portion of the great light became the profound darkness after being imprisoned in the dimensional prison of chaos after all. Light makes darkness. A pair exists. But it does not always exist.
That part of PSO where Rico suddenly realizes the name of Dark Falz hits much deeper with this understanding of the narrative from japanese PSIII.

Chaz fit me more as a Spellsword than Paladin, since while he has good healing his tech is ususally used more for zapping things with Tsu. He's also not as tanky as he probably should be.
Rika is oddly tanky despite barely wearing much (not like Wren or dual shield Rune though), and her tech is mostly used for healing and buffing. Her offense is mostly physical. That fits a Paladin more than Cleric.
>>
>>747105332
Forgot to mention that the anger from realizing Dark Falz is loose because his name was invoked causes the spontaneous awakening of the knowledge of Megid technique. This fully parallels the later Nei invocation and Grants awakening scene.

the true Nei Claw is the secret episode 1 quest reward item Heart of Poumn and it is intended to be Miun's claw from PSIII. Heart of Poumn's 3D model has "Nei" visually etched on the side of the weapon. The other legendary claws "Nei's Claw" and "Rika's Claw" were introduced with the gamecube version and exist more as references rather than being fully tied in with lore.
There actually is an art book that lists Orakio's black Nei Sword as also being called "Lassic's Blade" indicating that it previously belonged to Lassic from the original PS. The same art book labels the Heart of Poumn as Miun's Claw which also holds the name "Alis Claw". This Alis mentioned is actually not the same as the Alis from the original Phantasy Star as the name is spelled differently, アリス instead of アリサ. The Alis mentioned on the claw is the name of the green haired newman on the back of the Book of Hunters shown wielding the Heart of Poumn and implied to be the owner of the weapon after Miun. That character is the OC of Mamoru Nagano of Zeta Gundam fame who also worked as the designer of several PSO weapons including the Heart of Poumn. This same green haired newman named Alis with her Heart of Poumn claw also appeared as an NPC in PSO2 episode 1.

We're knee deep in spoilers already, so lets go whole-hog.

The tl;dr version is that the party wizard from the first Phantasy Star game figured out a way to kind-of live on after death by cramming a chunk of his soul and magic power in an orb and ~partially~ bodyjacking a willing volunteer, creating a mixture of the two. In the several millenia hence, he's done this six or seven times. That man's name? Lutz.

I think you guys don't understand how ridiculous what you're saying is
Star Wars primary influence was classic samurai kino especially Kurosawa movies specifically The Hidden Fortress which you could argue Star Wars directly ripped off almost the entire plot of that movie

Original trilogy Star Wars is mostly Dune crossed with a 50s samurai movie then the prequels take a heavy biblical turn
The Jedi are literally space samurai and Darth Vader is a space shogun commanding nazis
Then it takes some of Dunes aesthetics and themes and honestly just kinda dumbs them down
People exaggerate the influence of medieval fantasy on Star Wars when the connection is vague at best just because Star Wars follows a typical hero's journey style plot and there's swords I guess
But overall Star Wars has much less in common with Lord of the Rings

Basically stuff like Phantasy Star and Gundam is just Japan taking back what was theirs in the first place
Phantasy Star did obviously ripoff some Star Wars character designs though but only in the first game

It seems obvious to me that the modern Star Wars tv shows are a lot closer to classic serialized sci-fi shows than any of the movies
I mean movies are basically the antithesis of a serialized show
When I'm watching a Star Wars movie at no point am I thinking to myself wow this reminds me of Flash Gordon and Buck Rodgers, partly because I'm not 100 years old and partly because it simply doesn't

>It seems obvious to me
Who cares what seems obvious to an idiot. You don't know anything about the subject and you have sufficiently low IQ to pretend that you do. Dangerous, very annoying mix.

2nd game was ass too and the first game was incredibly mid with some kino moments chock full of soul that made the mid worth it.
PS4 is the only original series game worth a damn.

Are you gay AND retarded?

Phantasy Star I is a fucking Star Wars clone. I'm not the anon claiming the whole series is one, but you'd have to have the density of a neutron star to think otherwise.
Though, a lot of the light side/dark side shit is prevalent throughout the series and PSIV brings the influence back with all the chosen one bullshit
