Volumetric fog is literally the worst thing about modern gaming
>>
Why do they do it?
>>
>>747148010
Whichever anon coined the term "anti-soul gas" is a genius. That's exactly what it is and it always sends the modern gaming shills into a seething frenzy whenever you call it that.

To hide pop-in when textures or models either disappear or turn to low-resolution variations in the distance to save resources. The fog lets you see that something vaguely shaped like the object is there without realizing its model suddenly got 10x as many polygons, or its texture resolution just quadrupled.
>>
>>747148349
That fog is 1+ miles from where the person taking the photograph is standing. Now show the complete visual clarity of the 500 feet in front of them. Which is not what happens in modern games.

Caused by LCD displays having poor contrast and developers having to design around them

YOU caused this
>>
>>747148252
They outsource asset creation to indians. This results in inconsistent artstyle. Then they use fog to hide the details and mush everything into desaturated slop so the whole picture kinda looks consistent.

The whole point of heavy volumetric fog back in the day was to obscure sight so stuff didn't have to be rendered at long distances, it was a performance saving technique
Now it's all being rendered anyway raping performance and removing contrast, literally the worst of all worlds. Devs are fucking idiots.
>>
>>747149178

Fog looks significantly worse on low contrast LCD displays, OLED and HDR partially resolve the issue. If devs were designing around shitty LCD displays, why would they add a bunch of fog that specifically makes everything look worse on those exact displays?
>>
>>747149502
If anti soul gas is to benefit muh low contrast LCDs like retards ITT are claiming, then why does the left image look so much better on both my LCD side panel and my OLED main display? The contrast difference is stark.

Most people got real shitty LCDs tho, you have to make the game visible on shitty LCD with poor contrast that probably has glare from the sun and that results in this look
Diablo 2 remake for example
>>
>>747149387
If you're designing around LCDs, especially cheap LCDs, you'd want to decrease contrast but increase colour vibrancy. Making everything look washed out and gray is the literal opposite of what you'd want, that shit only looks good on displays that can actually show the difference between those grays.

Zero miles but a significant distance none the less. Several yards away at least. You can see clearly and in full contrast right to the end of the park it seems. The examples in OP's picture have fog right up in the character's face and sometimes literally engulfing them. A huge number of games from the past two generations have fog that blows out everything beyond arm's reach for no apparent reason. Having it closer than in real life is sensible in order to convey scale. Having it that close by default is inexcusable unless you're designing an area that has fog as a characteristic feature.

>Most people got real shitty LCDs tho
I don't think they do anymore, this was the case still mid-2010s but I don't think it's the case mid-2020s anymore because much better displays have been kinda cheap for a long ass time. Even though CPU and GPU tech stopped getting more inexpensive, displays continued to improve.

Also, it doesn't even line up, it's true that games made for CRTs had stronger contrasts but that was because gamma was different for them, and they look dark on LCDs, but if something you'd expect devs to make games with even higher contrast to make up for the lacking contrast of cheap LCDs. It actually looks like it's adjusted for some flatscreen TV with contrast cranked way too high.
>>

>camera shake

Don't give a shit, I've only occasionally turned bloom off and never been bothered by camera shake.
>chromatic aberration
>volumetric fog
Usually leave them on, but I'll disable them in some cases. I can see chromatic aberration as an annoyance in some games but to this day I can't spot it in Bloodborne, even though I know exactly what to look for. I've also never heard it complained about outside of /v/, and the term "anti-soul gas" is used by literally no one outside of here. This board is a genuine autistic circlejerk on some subjects, though I agree volumetric fog uses up too many resources and doesn't look good in several (but not all) cases. People act like it's just a generic corporate choice every single time it appears, but in some cases it actually is part of art direction. If you see fog in a forest, a polluted city, or a large outdoor area, the art team probably intended for it to be there. Bloom is often intentional too.
>motion blur
>depth of field
These are the bad ones. Turning them off gives an immediate and significant visual improvement in 99% of cases, the only game I've left depth of field on for is Armored Core 6 and I've never wanted to keep motion blur.

Screen Space Reflections, Volumetric Fog and AO are all used horribly in games and are the biggest performance hogs next to shadows.

Obviously you dont wanna turn shadows off entirely in a game but the other 3 you can turn off or set to low and be perfectly content with and wont impact immersion in the slightest.

Starfield has a completely different problem. It's LUTs putting this haze over the whole screen. Some of the very first mods either outright removed these shitty color filters or toned them down.
>>
>>747159310
Other anon who replied isn't me. I think it looks good in several areas of Elden Ring because the game's entire art direction is built around simulating vast scale even over technically small distances, though I would also turn it off in some other places that aren't supposed to look as big (which further supports the idea that the problem is application and not its existence). If an area is supposed to have fog, pollution, or smoke, that's a good place to put it. I've seen several screenshots in these threads and just thought "that looks like where I live on a foggy day".
It can also look better if they dial back the intensity so it doesn't completely obscure and desaturate everything but still makes objects at a further distance look less distinct. I suspect depth of field is getting some of the blame here too- that one often has similarly bad effects on visual clarity and has a lot less of an upside to argue for.

Because gane devs are losers/retards that never go outside and have no idea what fog looks like irl. One thing I haven't seen in a video game is how when you climb a really tall mountain you can actually get higher than the fog/cloud level and it's actually crystal clear. Higher doesn't always mean foggier.
>>
>>747159640
What the other anon said. Dust in the air can also create the same effect, this can be seen in real life. Go to a room that hasn't been dusted in a while and see for yourself. It shouldn't apply to rooms that are well maintained and clean, but a lot of Resident Evil locations aren't.

Sometimes. In other cases it's to make a distance look larger than it actually is. There are also examples that are wrong or extremely cherrypicked- Irithyll in Dark Souls 3 doesn't look like that because of volumetric fog, it looks like that because it's just that gray normally.

volumetric fog is one of those things that's so overused in AAA but funnily enough i think it looks better in low poly and indie stuff desu
especially with things like baked volumetrics you can get them down to be relatively cheap to render

pretty sure in most modern stuff it's overused at long distances to help hide LOD pop in and at closer range because SSGI tends to flatten everything out and lose details vs baked lighting
baked lighting is kind of going the way of the dodo from the looks of it

Not because of volumetric fog. I will say I think the complaints about its color palette are overblown, though, it isn't all gray. I went back and replayed it recently and was surprised by how much better the lighting in Firelink Shrine looked than in Elden Ring's 500 catacombs. It's more desaturated than prior games, but even within one area like Farron Keep there's a vast visual difference between the bridge with the Stray Demon and the swamp at the bottom.

I've been through this song and dance and while i agree that modern game devs are loser. Raging about artistic tools, direction, and implementation is retarded if there is an aesthetic

some game devs do implement volumetric fog with an artistic purpose. Some are lazy and plaster that in an indoor setting. And some do it as a form of best practices for a more 'cinematic' feel because of LE HOLLYWOOD

In cutscenes it doesn't matter much and they can be finely controlled for artistic effect, same as in movies, but in gameplay these effects are cancer far more often than not.

>>747158332
Depth of field is often made too intense, resulting in blurry visuals where they should be clear, and only has an on/off toggle so you can't just turn it down. Visual clarity also tends to make games look a lot better even in some unrealistic cases (though I agree depth of field has its uses, like in cutscenes or the rare cases where it's well implemented in-game).

Bad in most cases, but can improve a game's visuals if applied very lightly. Most devs aren't careful with it so the default approach should be to turn it off.

If you're in a lower humidity area the air will be clear most of the time. I'm in a place that gets a lot of rain so the mountains near here usually look at least a little foggy, and aren't visible at all on some days. Had a few days where you could be walking down a street and not see all the houses on it.
Volumetric fog is definitely applied too indiscriminately, but it's not always unrealistic either. Fog in early morning is especially common in any area with a lot of trees, near a coastline, or both.

>>747170546
I agree it's unrealistic, but I can't say that it makes zero sense because pretty much all cities in video games are vastly smaller than they should be, unless you're in a game that operates on a very large scale. Distance being simulated to create an atmosphere is common in many other ways too. I think they just need to dial back the intensity in a lot of cases, think about where to apply it and where not to, and as you said, give the option to turn it off.

Alright but older games also had this problem. Their solution was to create impressive skyboxes/backgrounds. Even 2D games had parallax scrolling to add the sense of scale.
Our brains can fill the gap, leave the rest for the imagination. You just need to create sense of wonder, you don't need to create the whole world as a developer.

I've been defending some instances of fog but this is accurate, snow creates clear air because the moisture isn't floating around anymore. This is why it needs to be applied selectively. You should see fog in forests and green mountains, not up at snow heights. That said, you can see fog and frost at the same time (most frost is frozen condensation, not frozen rain).
>>
>>747172030
>>747172162
then they fucked up big time, unless they were using the fog just to create atmosphere. The point is so you can have shitty looking distant objects to save processing power. Kinda like decreasing view distance, but without looking so obvious.

I also like the skybox approach, but it isn't applicable to cases where they want to make areas you can reach in-game look further away than they are like the Stellar Blade screenshot. I keep thinking about Fromsoft games here because they're very good at making an area feel vast when it's technically small. I was just looking at Consort Radahn's arena and it has (probably non-volumetric) fog used really well. Despite the low distance there's fog effects everywhere, but you can tell they're actually ash being blown around for a few reasons:
>ash piles all over the ground
>clouds move with the wind
>the area is at a high altitude
>the clouds are only near the floor where the piles are
Could've been an amazing spot if the actual boss fight was any good. But more relevant, I think it's okay to have unrealistic levels of fog if an area is supposed to "feel" big enough to have them, it just shouldn't be sloppily blanketed over everything regardless of context or dialed up so high that it removes all color from the environment.

>>747171943

Dank Souls is a perfect example of a game that feels bigger than it actually is. All 3 of them to be honest.

Honestly I've never liked Elden Ring's environments nearly as much as Dark Souls 3's, most of them don't feel as handcrafted and the overwhelming majority of enemy encounters are easy, recycled, or both. For all people complain about DS3's linear progression, it has some pretty interesting levels like the Grand Archives, the Cathedral of the Deep, and the interconnected parts between the Profaned Capital and Irithyll Dungeon.

it's to create variations in color/contrast so that the relevant things to focus on "pop" out more
If you have everything at the same color/contrast levels things get very noisey and it's hard to identify what you are supposed to be looking at. You aren't actually seeing in 3d so it establishes actual depth at a glance, it's a good technique.
>>747154153
This is kind of a useful example the visual noise of the construction rafters draw your eyes so when you look at this image those are the first things you look at.
While on the bottom you first look at snake or the two guys since they are more emphasized and your eyes are not pulled to the construction rafters.

It's basically a lazy way to give the illusion of depth to an environment. "Volumetric" means 3D space.
If you forcibly remove it from a game designed with it in mind the environments become more vibrant but also more flat. I prefer the vibrancy personally.
>>
>>747183245
…for lazy developers that can’t into visual design and are making the best out of their clusterfuck.
>>
>>747148797

>>
>>747183512
Older games had far less visual noise, if you want really high fidelity assets it creates a greater demand to have things pop out from it. Many games have an issue where the shit that matters is invisible and the normal strat is just painting it yellow which is awful.

I wouldn't mind if they just returned to lower poly simpler stuff but I don't see that happening. Like I said there is nothing inherently fucked up about it it's mostly a matter of taste but it's just as you get higher fidelity things stand out less and you need to force it.

They could just use actual color and have characters and worlds with distinct colors and textures but even then if oyu have sufficiently complex environments it will just look noisey. I personally just do simpler/lower poly/cell shading with distinct colors.

>>747183672
Yeah it's a taste thing but I don't think you can understate the impact of just complexity in the environments especially if you can't just get away with having bright colors, it's genuinely not an easy problem to solve. Would you rather have fog or red outlined enemies or something?

You know exactly why it has to be defended subjectively. It takes processing power to run so it's not good for performance. I just said that and like every other argument here you're ignoring it so you can say I'm sticking to subjectivity because I'm "scared". I'm pointing you to other subjective arguments here- not elsewhere, in the same thread- because I already went over the good and bad uses for volumetric fog like five times. There have already been anons pretending fog doesn't exist in real life, pretending this effect is only ever used at max intensity, pretending it's there in screenshots that don't even have it, cherrypicking screenshots that are the only time in a game it shows up, and more. Scroll up. Read. What you're asking for is there. Or keep your head up your own ass if you want, I'm definitely not expecting you to change at this point. Just stop fucking lying.

>>747184178
Yes, filmmakers are so addicted to antisoul gas that they invented dust and fog in real life.
>>
>>747150626
Is this fogshit an attempt to smooth edges? Why se would you place it right in front of the camera over characters standing directly in front of it?
>>
actually, the #1 root cause of all evil including this one is volumetric lighting
>>
>>747159940
A sandstorm is a storm. Completely different from a fog.
>>
>>747184295
>you know why it has to be defended subjectively
Because you have nothing else. It’s objectively taxing system resources and it objectively obscures the image which is less conducive to engaging with the graphics in a video game. So all you can say is you like having cataract vision because… because you just do okay?!
>>
>>747184413
Old filmmakers just couldn’t reproduce a natural aspect of “real life” apparently, they needed modern filmmakers to show them how its done (in the colorist suite because that’s not how the set looked on the day lmao)

There's way more wrong with this than fog.
>armor is overcomplicated with patterns that don't match
>yellow bit around the neck changed to gray
>colors are darkened and desaturated even in parts that are well lit and close to the camera
>lighting is all wrong, makes the environments look uniform
>metal gate isn't any more reflective than a stone wall
>UI changed from something creative and thematic to a generic meter
>entire graveyard is visible at once, removing creepy atmosphere
>sky changed from dark blue to purple
The area easily could have been made foggy (it's supposed to be a graveyard with bad visibility, fog would make perfect sense) without obliterating distinct colors and turning the whole thing bright as day. They could even have kept the lights from the windows in the distance and the eyes on the skulls since they would've been spooky and dim enough not to light up the whole area. Someone fucked up bad here.

Yes, and that's why dark rooms in horror games are bullshit we should do away with. It takes more resources to simulate and it obscures the image.
>>
>>747185739
Yeah see this is what I mean by you have nothing. Take the specific way image obfuscation has an objective purpose and then apply that to all other matters as if that’s a gotcha.
Next you’ll say you can’t clown on bad controls in general because rage games like QWOP achieve their goals by having bad controls on purpose.
>>
>>747148010
But dude if you don't wash everything out, there may be slight visual clutter! It could possibly make it up to 10% harder for the lowest common denominator to parse! We HAVE to make 2/3rd of the screen completely free of saturation or contrast, so that no one becomes confused! Also they expect it now so if we do anything differently it will be alienating! Change is scary!
>>
>>747185973
The defenses for it in this thread have been almost entirely pointing out cases where it can be applied while acknowledging that it shouldn't be used everywhere. The ones I wrote certainly have. You don't know that, of course, because you've spent an hour refusing to read them.

I’ll accept your qualifier as an additional concession. Not only can you not articulate your position, choosing instead to appeal to a theoretical post that you theoretically made, not only do you admit that if you had articulated yourself, it would be a purely subjective position which I doubt you could elaborate on beyond ‘I liek it tho’ (unlike the reverse), but now you admit that had you articulated your purely subjective position, it wouldn’t even apply in full to the topic of discussion, this pervasive trend in video games.
Truly, you had nothing to offer.

The problem with anti-soul gas is that devs apply it to the foreground, midground, and background which ironically flattens the image because everything merges into being around the same value, saturation, and color temperature. No one complains when a good landscape painter uses atmospheric perspective because they apply it appropriately to create space well unlike many game devs.

>>
>>747187190
Yeah, pretty much, although I'll add that a lot of the anons who call it anti-soul gas are also incapable of distinguishing good usage from bad usage and will confuse any instance of anything being out of focus with a case of what they're talking about. See some of the "examples" earlier where its application made sense or what they were showing wasn't volumetric fog at all. The depth of field examples were especially bad.
>>
>>747187190
If you’re gonna use the fog, this is correct. Lightly applied to covey vast distances.

It lacks visual clarity and obscures the scene, and is therefore bad. You just like having cataracts. Realism shouldn't come before readability.
I understand complaining about a game fucking up the visuals in a remake or making all its environments washed out for no reason, but half this thread is just anons proving that artistic intention is something they don't believe exists outside of games that look like OG Crash Bandicoot. I'm surprised no one tried to call the clouds in Archdragon Peak anti-soul gas with how bad it's gotten.

The retarded aspect is because if the color scheme was bright and vibrant, it wouldn't match what's supposed to be going on in the setting at all (and because the game does have some bright areas and contrast, as your image shows).

no one is saying every zone needs to be bright and vibrant either though, a lot of fantasy including previous dark souls games have this dark gritty environmental design but they can still have pops of colour so you're not just looking at different shades of grey for 50 hours. if you think it is fine and it was necessary for dark souls 3 to look like this, but it is equally fine if someone says they don't like it

is it really such a weird thing that people might prefer games using something as fundamental as "colour", a game like Dark Souls 3 kind of melts together in a sea of grey the only zone I see people talk about is Irithyll. This thread is full of games that kind of just wash everything out. Out of all the things to complain about this seems pretty normal to me, like with some era of the MCU films where everyone is saying the colour palette looks like concrete.
