Volumetric fog is literally the worst thing about modern gaming
Why do they do it?
>>747148010Whichever anon coined the term "anti-soul gas" is a genius. That's exactly what it is and it always sends the modern gaming shills into a seething frenzy whenever you call it that.
doesn't bother me. i've been outside before.
>>747148252To hide pop-in when textures or models either disappear or turn to low-resolution variations in the distance to save resources. The fog lets you see that something vaguely shaped like the object is there without realizing its model suddenly got 10x as many polygons, or its texture resolution just quadrupled.
>>747148349That fog is 1+ miles from where the person taking the photograph is standing. Now show the complete visual clarity of the 500 feet in front of them. Which is not what happens in modern games.
>>747148349>>747148424LMAO
>>747148349you cant pretend theres no difference between this and the fog present in the 5-10 feet distances shown in ops imagekys
Caused by LCD displays having poor contrast and developers having to design around themYOU caused this
>>747148252They outsource asset creation to indians. This results in inconsistent artstyle. Then they use fog to hide the details and mush everything into desaturated slop so the whole picture kinda looks consistent.
Every game NEEDS gay fog.
>>747148547what you started to say would only make sense if developers were using OLED displays and totally ignored how the games looked on regular displays. if they were designing around them they wouldnt put all the fog in the game you fucking retard.
>>747148517rumao>>747148513>>747148535>noooo you can't make the artistic decision to exaggerate distance in your video game!
>>747148349anti soul gas doesn't look like that though
>>747148010retarded devs and many gamers including half of /v/ think more effects = betteralso it's just one click in unreal to add it
>>747148674the fog is literally present between the camera and the playermodel standing 10 feet in front of itKYS YOURSELF
>>747148716>anti soul gasatmosphere*
>>747148349look at all that fog, very realistic and comparable
>>747148674>we need to add fog to this room because we need to make it bigger or something!!!LMAO
>>747148010
>>747148674The artistic decision to have fog in literally every single room and building in the entire game.A large open space at 6am in the morning when there's a foggy due is fine. Having fog inside a building on a sunny day just makes absolutely clearly no sense at all you delusional cunt.
>>747148773That happens in GTA V too, looks so bad
>>747148773>NOOOO YOUR GAME HAS TO BE EXACTLY THE SAME AS REALITY KYS KYS KYS KYS KYSKKYSKYKSYKSYKSrelax lil guy
>>747148547Literal retard, most of these studios use 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio dual cell LCD mastering displays which cost tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars
>>747148010It makes everything look shit and it isn't even realistic. I don't understand why developers think it looks good, or why most gamers don't even seem to notice it. Pure eye cancer.
>>747148786enough about your sharts, what about the anti-soul gas?
>>747148672>if developers were using OLED displays and totally ignored how the games looked on regular displaysWhat are you on about, doesn't even make sense
>>747148349have you been inside?
>volumetric fogThat's what that garbage is called then, I thought I was the only one bothered by it in modern gamesEven fucking platformers which are supposed to be colorful use that garbage, literally making the game look worse
>>747148912you arent real
>>747149082
>>747148010I dont mind it with some styles like say slime rancherI cant even tell if it has volumetric fog because if it does it is seamlessthe op images are mostly soulless though
>>747148919>most of these studios use 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio dual cell LCD mastering displaysDumbass they are making the game for the average persons display not for only their display
>>747148990on a display with higher contrast you could use fog without it making everything look so washed out. what the fuck are you on about? you think fog is being added to compound the glare effect on LCDs? to hide it? what?
>>747148934Older zooms grew up on grey brown bloom with the ps3 360 so this probably looks better to them, they never played anything else
>>747149126everything beyond the foreground is literally 5+ miles awayand in many videogames the foreground would be all washed out with fog too
The worst thing about volumetric fog - aside from being poorly and excessively implemented - is that not a single game lets you turn it off in the settings.
>>747148010Spider-Man on PS1 did fog in a game the best, making it part of the plot and due to system limitations. Very creative.
>>747149198The whole point of heavy volumetric fog back in the day was to obscure sight so stuff didn't have to be rendered at long distances, it was a performance saving techniqueNow it's all being rendered anyway raping performance and removing contrast, literally the worst of all worlds. Devs are fucking idiots.
>>747149178>on a display with higher contrast you could use fog without it making everything look so washed outOk and? Most people have LCD and not OLED so devs will obviously design the art for the low contrast LCD. Nigga thought we were exclusively talking about OLED
>>747148606Literally all the new takes on old tracks are downgrades. Wish I were joking.
>>747149198>original>emulator
It skibidi aint
>>747149262>the building on the left is 5 miles away
>>747149483>Immediate foreground is crystal clear>Only the background that's 10+ miles away is obscured by the atmosphereYeah that's how it's supposed to work. In ocarina of time remake on Hyrule Field you can literally see whisps of dog blow past 10 feet in front of you.
>>747149059yeah i cant see shit
>>747148547>developers having to design around themA lot of dev work is done on really cheap displays, so blame the corporate that got them that shit. It would be better if they used displays more like the ones consumers actually use.
>>747149674how many miles away are the buildings next to central park
lol I noticed I added a lot of layer 3 fog to my SMW rom hack because I thought it looked cool and aesethic. didn't know this had a term for it hehe
>>747149387?????????? AND THEY WOULD DO THAT BY MAKING THEM LOOK EVEN MORE WASHED OUT?holy shit in multiple threads i just have brain dead fucktards incapable of understanding anything replying to me like they know better, the one time i post on this dumbfuck board of brainrot zoomers
>>747149841Note the 100% crystal clear foreground.
>about to toggle on volumetric fog in my game projectdo i dare?
>>747150013didn't answer the question
>>747148990Fog looks significantly worse on low contrast LCD displays, OLED and HDR partially resolve the issue. If devs were designing around shitty LCD displays, why would they add a bunch of fog that specifically makes everything look worse on those exact displays?
>>747149502If anti soul gas is to benefit muh low contrast LCDs like retards ITT are claiming, then why does the left image look so much better on both my LCD side panel and my OLED main display? The contrast difference is stark.
>>747149763>if they used displays more like the ones consumers actually use. Most people got real shitty LCDs tho, you have to make the game visible on shitty LCD with poor contrast that probably has glare from the sun and that results in this lookDiablo 2 remake for example
>>747149387If you're designing around LCDs, especially cheap LCDs, you'd want to decrease contrast but increase colour vibrancy. Making everything look washed out and gray is the literal opposite of what you'd want, that shit only looks good on displays that can actually show the difference between those grays.
>>747150116seriously this board has some of the dumbest fucking niggers ive ever seen second only to the people still shilling for trump on /pol/
>>747148010How were boomer games so ahead of their time? Why was there such a dark age of video game after them where they just... forgot to add fog? It's truly puzzling.
>>747150147there is no diablo 2 remake in this image
>nooo its not my LCD display!!!! Its all the devs doing it for no reason!!!!lol you can't convince poor autists
>>747150145retards just making stuff up. they blame everything except the developer.
>>747149275Christ the difference is massive. Anyone who thinks the top image looks better needs to immediately self-immolate.
>>747150458Why has this become the go to cope? Is it poorfags who hate themselves that keep posting this? Are you trying to keep up the illusion that the other side is always greener? Because it's not.
>>747149841Zero miles but a significant distance none the less. Several yards away at least. You can see clearly and in full contrast right to the end of the park it seems. The examples in OP's picture have fog right up in the character's face and sometimes literally engulfing them. A huge number of games from the past two generations have fog that blows out everything beyond arm's reach for no apparent reason. Having it closer than in real life is sensible in order to convey scale. Having it that close by default is inexcusable unless you're designing an area that has fog as a characteristic feature.
>>747150714Please tell me bottom is parody.
In Mumbai you can't see 20 feet in front of you due to thick smog. They're just developing what they know.

>>747151581the fog starts immediately because it's caused by the air which is everywhere including directly in front of the camera.
>>747148252Hides bad Lod from being noticeable. You can use r.fog 0 in most UE games to see the difference.

>>747151396That's Kokiri Village, not the Lost Woods.
>>747148010Is this the 202X equivalent of lens flare? Why does every game have to be a perpetual Dense Fog Advisory?
>>747152430it's a significant strain to make things look worse
>>747151615I've had this problem for years and thought it was just me. But no, real life looks fine, old games look fine. It's just the way newer games do things that make me constantly miss things that should be obvious. That image is a perfect example. If I didn't have context and just had to look at the background of Kokiri Village there, I'd have a hell of a time trying to distinguish shit
>>747152065The hell? Visibility is usually way better than that in the overworld, is this a cutscene or something?
>>747150147>Most people got real shitty LCDs thoI don't think they do anymore, this was the case still mid-2010s but I don't think it's the case mid-2020s anymore because much better displays have been kinda cheap for a long ass time. Even though CPU and GPU tech stopped getting more inexpensive, displays continued to improve. Also, it doesn't even line up, it's true that games made for CRTs had stronger contrasts but that was because gamma was different for them, and they look dark on LCDs, but if something you'd expect devs to make games with even higher contrast to make up for the lacking contrast of cheap LCDs. It actually looks like it's adjusted for some flatscreen TV with contrast cranked way too high.
>>747148252If you can't see the graphics that means the graphics are good.Go into skyrim modding and it's all the same shit. Everyone just hides textures through as many layers of filters, shadows and fog as they can.
>>747150147That level of contrast is inaccurate. Real shadows unless you are in pitch black, are made up of shades of grey.
>>747148846swampy cathedral kinda cool ngl

>>747152471>camera shake>bloomDon't give a shit, I've only occasionally turned bloom off and never been bothered by camera shake.>chromatic aberration>volumetric fogUsually leave them on, but I'll disable them in some cases. I can see chromatic aberration as an annoyance in some games but to this day I can't spot it in Bloodborne, even though I know exactly what to look for. I've also never heard it complained about outside of /v/, and the term "anti-soul gas" is used by literally no one outside of here. This board is a genuine autistic circlejerk on some subjects, though I agree volumetric fog uses up too many resources and doesn't look good in several (but not all) cases. People act like it's just a generic corporate choice every single time it appears, but in some cases it actually is part of art direction. If you see fog in a forest, a polluted city, or a large outdoor area, the art team probably intended for it to be there. Bloom is often intentional too.>motion blur>depth of fieldThese are the bad ones. Turning them off gives an immediate and significant visual improvement in 99% of cases, the only game I've left depth of field on for is Armored Core 6 and I've never wanted to keep motion blur.

>>747148010I really like it.
Screen Space Reflections, Volumetric Fog and AO are all used horribly in games and are the biggest performance hogs next to shadows.Obviously you dont wanna turn shadows off entirely in a game but the other 3 you can turn off or set to low and be perfectly content with and wont impact immersion in the slightest.
calling this "antisoul gas" never cease to make me smirk, bless whoever thought about it>>747148010but I think in some of this it's literally just terrible/lacking contrast. I think RE2 has no volumetrics but it still look like this. >>747157691AO is extremely important and it almost never looks bad, every games will have some form of ao.SSR is free, but it is misused for sure. I like RT reflection just so I don't have to look at broken disappearing reflections all the time.

>>747159310Other anon who replied isn't me. I think it looks good in several areas of Elden Ring because the game's entire art direction is built around simulating vast scale even over technically small distances, though I would also turn it off in some other places that aren't supposed to look as big (which further supports the idea that the problem is application and not its existence). If an area is supposed to have fog, pollution, or smoke, that's a good place to put it. I've seen several screenshots in these threads and just thought "that looks like where I live on a foggy day".It can also look better if they dial back the intensity so it doesn't completely obscure and desaturate everything but still makes objects at a further distance look less distinct. I suspect depth of field is getting some of the blame here too- that one often has similarly bad effects on visual clarity and has a lot less of an upside to argue for.
This shit has been a pain since Fallout 4 and has only gotten worse, at least in Fallout 4 they were actually trying to recreate weather effects and was only temporary.
>>747160180>pic relThat looks really bad

Because gane devs are losers/retards that never go outside and have no idea what fog looks like irl. One thing I haven't seen in a video game is how when you climb a really tall mountain you can actually get higher than the fog/cloud level and it's actually crystal clear. Higher doesn't always mean foggier.
>>747159640What the other anon said. Dust in the air can also create the same effect, this can be seen in real life. Go to a room that hasn't been dusted in a while and see for yourself. It shouldn't apply to rooms that are well maintained and clean, but a lot of Resident Evil locations aren't.
>>747160603>when you climb a really tall mountain you can actually get higher than the fog/cloud level and it's actually crystal clearAce Combat 7 has a level with this as a mechanic.
I don't play a lot of new AAAs so I didn't even realize it got this bad. This is like difference between films shot on film compared to films shot on digital. With films the excuse is that it's cheaper to keep it digital and layer effects on in post. What's the excuse here? Are developers just trying to make their games look like shit movies?

>>747160921Sometimes. In other cases it's to make a distance look larger than it actually is. There are also examples that are wrong or extremely cherrypicked- Irithyll in Dark Souls 3 doesn't look like that because of volumetric fog, it looks like that because it's just that gray normally.

volumetric fog is one of those things that's so overused in AAA but funnily enough i think it looks better in low poly and indie stuff desuespecially with things like baked volumetrics you can get them down to be relatively cheap to renderpretty sure in most modern stuff it's overused at long distances to help hide LOD pop in and at closer range because SSGI tends to flatten everything out and lose details vs baked lightingbaked lighting is kind of going the way of the dodo from the looks of it

>>747161808Not because of volumetric fog. I will say I think the complaints about its color palette are overblown, though, it isn't all gray. I went back and replayed it recently and was surprised by how much better the lighting in Firelink Shrine looked than in Elden Ring's 500 catacombs. It's more desaturated than prior games, but even within one area like Farron Keep there's a vast visual difference between the bridge with the Stray Demon and the swamp at the bottom.

There's a small mountain next to where I live and I hike it every other years or so with friends not from the region to see the sights.Even on a cloudy day as long as there's not too much humidity in the air you can see the peak of the tallest mountain in the alps from 200km away.I'd say atmospheric fog doesn't start showing until 50-80km
>>747170063Having a OLED won't change how the art was intentionally designed
>>747170234It's there to simulate distance. But it sucks at that. Atmospheric scattering isn't visible at such small distances. It would also not have such tint.So for me it looks like air pollution. You would have to burn trash to get to that level of air pollution though.

>>747170434If you're in a lower humidity area the air will be clear most of the time. I'm in a place that gets a lot of rain so the mountains near here usually look at least a little foggy, and aren't visible at all on some days. Had a few days where you could be walking down a street and not see all the houses on it.Volumetric fog is definitely applied too indiscriminately, but it's not always unrealistic either. Fog in early morning is especially common in any area with a lot of trees, near a coastline, or both.
>>747148010Just turn it off.

>>747150767Christ, that's obnoxious
>>747170923I'm not defending the horrible filters (that are clearly intentionally applied because there are colorful parts with no brown and grey filter) but the post processing shit like DoF, blur, vignette, etc. are mostly disabled by default.
>>747170546I agree it's unrealistic, but I can't say that it makes zero sense because pretty much all cities in video games are vastly smaller than they should be, unless you're in a game that operates on a very large scale. Distance being simulated to create an atmosphere is common in many other ways too. I think they just need to dial back the intensity in a lot of cases, think about where to apply it and where not to, and as you said, give the option to turn it off.
>>747148010>old games have great volumetric fog>most new games have ugly volumetric fogWhy did they do it? It's not even hard to tweak fog settings, it's trivial to use reshade to make it look good.

>>747171943fog lowers the performance
>>747171841I've been defending some instances of fog but this is accurate, snow creates clear air because the moisture isn't floating around anymore. This is why it needs to be applied selectively. You should see fog in forests and green mountains, not up at snow heights. That said, you can see fog and frost at the same time (most frost is frozen condensation, not frozen rain).
>>747172030>>747172162then they fucked up big time, unless they were using the fog just to create atmosphere. The point is so you can have shitty looking distant objects to save processing power. Kinda like decreasing view distance, but without looking so obvious.

>>747172319you can post on more than one board, pal
>>747171839I also like the skybox approach, but it isn't applicable to cases where they want to make areas you can reach in-game look further away than they are like the Stellar Blade screenshot. I keep thinking about Fromsoft games here because they're very good at making an area feel vast when it's technically small. I was just looking at Consort Radahn's arena and it has (probably non-volumetric) fog used really well. Despite the low distance there's fog effects everywhere, but you can tell they're actually ash being blown around for a few reasons:>ash piles all over the ground>clouds move with the wind>the area is at a high altitude>the clouds are only near the floor where the piles areCould've been an amazing spot if the actual boss fight was any good. But more relevant, I think it's okay to have unrealistic levels of fog if an area is supposed to "feel" big enough to have them, it just shouldn't be sloppily blanketed over everything regardless of context or dialed up so high that it removes all color from the environment.>>747171943This specific type of fog effect eats more power to turn on than off, that's what people have been pointing out already, don't be retarded.

Why do devs just slap this fog everywhere instead of using it to sell the idea of distance as it should be used? Is it supposed to be atmospheric? What atmosphere are they selling? It could work in a horror game like Silent Hill.
>>747172880Dank Souls is a perfect example of a game that feels bigger than it actually is. All 3 of them to be honest.ER has some of that but open world design destroys that sense of wonder. >>747173480Honestly I've never liked Elden Ring's environments nearly as much as Dark Souls 3's, most of them don't feel as handcrafted and the overwhelming majority of enemy encounters are easy, recycled, or both. >>747174167True, it gets even worse in the DLC. If the whole game was just legacy dungeons it would be perfect. Or as close to perfect as a fromsoft game can be. I really should emulate BB, because I've never played that one.
>>747174376Okay. Why are the visibly wispy, brown clumps of particles in the air in an area with almost no moisture formed by condensed water? Give a reason. And "anti-soul gas" is not a reason, a universally applied fog effect does not create clustered spots just above ground level.

It isn’t just video games.Anime has only recently started to cut back on its anti-soul gas equivalent, the vasoline filter.
>>747180393I will accept a sensical answer, which you have failed to provide.
>>747180927Movies too
>>747180959You will reject any answer that claims it contributes something visually by just unilaterally repeating "it looks like shit". You've already stated that as your conclusion. No argument can be made for it having technical value since it objectively does eat some resources to include, so if you reject subjective arguments by calling anyone who likes the effect a shiteater, there's no point presenting them to you at all.
>>747181543I notice that you are unable to provide an explanation, so you’re left with pretending that asking for one is “so weird and unreasonable that I shouldn’t dignify you with a response”, because feigned incredulity is all you have.
>>747180796ok
>>747182186>PLEASE stop pointing out how I already said I won't listen>PLEASE give an opinion so I can call you stupid without reading it PLEASE bro I need to jerk off to my own intelligenceThe arguments for it from a subjective point of view are right there in the thread, just read them if you want them so bad you double nigger.
>>747148547>LCDs have poor contrast>so lets reduce the contrast even further
>>747148010t. tasteless blind retard
>>747182685I see that it makes you upset that I’ve correctly ascertained that you have nothing to say on the subject of the thread and must deflect. You must retreat to personal taste, supposedly expounded elsewhere, without elaboration, as a reason for why it’s excessively used today. You deflect to me to get off topic. You deflect to a mysterious other to avoid engaging with the topic. You appeal to taste because you can retreat to it’s just an opinion bro. Pathetic.
these dipshits have both cracked open their thesaurus
it's to create variations in color/contrast so that the relevant things to focus on "pop" out more If you have everything at the same color/contrast levels things get very noisey and it's hard to identify what you are supposed to be looking at. You aren't actually seeing in 3d so it establishes actual depth at a glance, it's a good technique. >>747154153This is kind of a useful example the visual noise of the construction rafters draw your eyes so when you look at this image those are the first things you look at. While on the bottom you first look at snake or the two guys since they are more emphasized and your eyes are not pulled to the construction rafters. The problem is not the fog the problem is the games are shit deigned by people with no taste >>747171437it's literally just bad taste and process driven development where an artist can't just say it looks bad
>>747171841not your board.
>>747183245Older games without it pop more >>747178982And are easier to differentiate. All the fog does is wash everything out and blend elements together into an ugly vasoline soup.
>>747148492Thst O lu works for very distant or small objects, but the fog tints everything even close to the camera. This cannot be the explanation m
>>747148327That was me lol.I didn't think at the time it would catch on but it's funny it did.Originally I was talking about Monster Hunter World and how much worse the game looks with it on.>>747148252It's basically a lazy way to give the illusion of depth to an environment. "Volumetric" means 3D space. If you forcibly remove it from a game designed with it in mind the environments become more vibrant but also more flat. I prefer the vibrancy personally.
>>747183245…for lazy developers that can’t into visual design and are making the best out of their clusterfuck.
>>747148797Pretty sure space doesn't have Usplash+ floating around everywhere. This picture is FAKE.
>>747183512Older games had far less visual noise, if you want really high fidelity assets it creates a greater demand to have things pop out from it. Many games have an issue where the shit that matters is invisible and the normal strat is just painting it yellow which is awful. I wouldn't mind if they just returned to lower poly simpler stuff but I don't see that happening. Like I said there is nothing inherently fucked up about it it's mostly a matter of taste but it's just as you get higher fidelity things stand out less and you need to force it. They could just use actual color and have characters and worlds with distinct colors and textures but even then if oyu have sufficiently complex environments it will just look noisey. I personally just do simpler/lower poly/cell shading with distinct colors. >>747183672Yeah it's a taste thing but I don't think you can understate the impact of just complexity in the environments especially if you can't just get away with having bright colors, it's genuinely not an easy problem to solve. Would you rather have fog or red outlined enemies or something?
>>747151514What are you referring to? Liurnia or the lake in caelid?
>>747148010It's just a tool that some devs overused
They have bad taste. They’re copying ugly modern movies shot by cinematographers and directors with bad taste, or who do it because their cg workflow demands ugly flat lighting and normgroids don’t care.
>>747178982
>>747149353Oh no, Brapman is in NYC again!
>>747183165You know exactly why it has to be defended subjectively. It takes processing power to run so it's not good for performance. I just said that and like every other argument here you're ignoring it so you can say I'm sticking to subjectivity because I'm "scared". I'm pointing you to other subjective arguments here- not elsewhere, in the same thread- because I already went over the good and bad uses for volumetric fog like five times. There have already been anons pretending fog doesn't exist in real life, pretending this effect is only ever used at max intensity, pretending it's there in screenshots that don't even have it, cherrypicking screenshots that are the only time in a game it shows up, and more. Scroll up. Read. What you're asking for is there. Or keep your head up your own ass if you want, I'm definitely not expecting you to change at this point. Just stop fucking lying.>>747183242Thanks, phoneposter.
>>747183880The pursuit of realism has raped and gaped video games to death.
>>747181245>>747184178Yes, filmmakers are so addicted to antisoul gas that they invented dust and fog in real life.
>>747150626Is this fogshit an attempt to smooth edges? Why se would you place it right in front of the camera over characters standing directly in front of it?
actually, the #1 root cause of all evil including this one is volumetric lighting
>>747159940A sandstorm is a storm. Completely different from a fog.
>>747184295>you know why it has to be defended subjectivelyBecause you have nothing else. It’s objectively taxing system resources and it objectively obscures the image which is less conducive to engaging with the graphics in a video game. So all you can say is you like having cataract vision because… because you just do okay?!
>>747184413Old filmmakers just couldn’t reproduce a natural aspect of “real life” apparently, they needed modern filmmakers to show them how its done (in the colorist suite because that’s not how the set looked on the day lmao)
>>747148010>>747148349Why the fuck did God put this bullshit in the game?
>>747183880Thank you for at least attempting to come up with a real answer. I don’t believe it solves the problem. But I can agree that too much unnecessary detail is bad visual design.
>>747185228Not even close to the same thing, bad faith.
>>747182702See>>747161171LCD is clearly harder to see the game with actual contrast
>>747184206There's way more wrong with this than fog.>armor is overcomplicated with patterns that don't match>yellow bit around the neck changed to gray>colors are darkened and desaturated even in parts that are well lit and close to the camera>lighting is all wrong, makes the environments look uniform>metal gate isn't any more reflective than a stone wall>UI changed from something creative and thematic to a generic meter>entire graveyard is visible at once, removing creepy atmosphere>sky changed from dark blue to purpleThe area easily could have been made foggy (it's supposed to be a graveyard with bad visibility, fog would make perfect sense) without obliterating distinct colors and turning the whole thing bright as day. They could even have kept the lights from the windows in the distance and the eyes on the skulls since they would've been spooky and dim enough not to light up the whole area. Someone fucked up bad here.
>>747148424>winter picture>all moisture is frozen>hence no fog

>>747185425So the solution is to make it look as comparatively shit to everybody?
>>747171880eh, night city is supposed to be a polluted shithole covered in smog
>>747184856Yes, and that's why dark rooms in horror games are bullshit we should do away with. It takes more resources to simulate and it obscures the image.
>>747185739Yeah see this is what I mean by you have nothing. Take the specific way image obfuscation has an objective purpose and then apply that to all other matters as if that’s a gotcha.Next you’ll say you can’t clown on bad controls in general because rage games like QWOP achieve their goals by having bad controls on purpose.
>>747148010But dude if you don't wash everything out, there may be slight visual clutter! It could possibly make it up to 10% harder for the lowest common denominator to parse! We HAVE to make 2/3rd of the screen completely free of saturation or contrast, so that no one becomes confused! Also they expect it now so if we do anything differently it will be alienating! Change is scary!
>>747185973The defenses for it in this thread have been almost entirely pointing out cases where it can be applied while acknowledging that it shouldn't be used everywhere. The ones I wrote certainly have. You don't know that, of course, because you've spent an hour refusing to read them.

>>747186124I’ll accept your qualifier as an additional concession. Not only can you not articulate your position, choosing instead to appeal to a theoretical post that you theoretically made, not only do you admit that if you had articulated yourself, it would be a purely subjective position which I doubt you could elaborate on beyond ‘I liek it tho’ (unlike the reverse), but now you admit that had you articulated your purely subjective position, it wouldn’t even apply in full to the topic of discussion, this pervasive trend in video games.Truly, you had nothing to offer.
>>747186917It's an actual point I actually made that you're continuing to ignore because you're too busy being enlightened by your own intelligence to scroll up. READ, NIGGA, READ.
>>747186523>We should emulate the flaws inherent to photography because I said soFailed directors going into video games has been a disaster
The problem with anti-soul gas is that devs apply it to the foreground, midground, and background which ironically flattens the image because everything merges into being around the same value, saturation, and color temperature. No one complains when a good landscape painter uses atmospheric perspective because they apply it appropriately to create space well unlike many game devs.
>>747187150>I promise I totally owned you somewhere else please don’t use brain hurty words
>>747187190Reasonable take.
>>747187190Yeah, pretty much, although I'll add that a lot of the anons who call it anti-soul gas are also incapable of distinguishing good usage from bad usage and will confuse any instance of anything being out of focus with a case of what they're talking about. See some of the "examples" earlier where its application made sense or what they were showing wasn't volumetric fog at all. The depth of field examples were especially bad.
>>747187190If you’re gonna use the fog, this is correct. Lightly applied to covey vast distances.
>>747187289Read. It's easy. I made arguments for this, other people made arguments for this, they're all there, you can see them whenever you find the page up button on your keyboard. We'll wait.
>>747187528There is more bad usage than proper usage nowadays. Certain individuals mixing it up with DoF doesn’t negate the complaint.
>>747151198are you seriously trying to say right looks better, is that seriously what you're doing right now
>>747187190this is the only reasonable take itt. Why do indoor have fog? why in front of the player or at least 20ft? That's not how real life work and breaks immersion
>>747187634404: Argument not found (again)>>747187803It does.
>>747187764That's a fair position, but it doesn't negate the issue with /v/ being straight up retarded about this and pulling the same angle they do every time something gets turned into a buzzword- throwing it out at every opportunity whether it's accurate or not. Every game with dodging is rollslop, every platformer is bing bing wahoo, every game with comedy is reddit, and every game with fog, desaturation, depth of field, or god rays is anti-soul gas.
>>747148010that's TAA anon

>>747188186The internet as a whole does not know how to talk about most aspects of art, 4chan is better than most but still bad. There are also a lot of posters that just want to get a reaction or goof off and will intentionally say something wrong to do so.

>>747188417None of your posts ever had anything of substance to say so yeah I’ll be taking that award. Maybe next time you can participate directly instead of vaguely alluding to having participated elsewhere.
>>747148010I've noticed that when you apply DLSS 5 neural rendering to these older games to give them a more photorealistic quality one of the things it does is delete all the volumetric fog and atmospheric scattering. It's so overblown in every modern title.
>>747188690Many animation directors need to be fired then because the vasoline filter is often universally applied.
>>747188690It lacks visual clarity and obscures the scene, and is therefore bad. You just like having cataracts. Realism shouldn't come before readability.I understand complaining about a game fucking up the visuals in a remake or making all its environments washed out for no reason, but half this thread is just anons proving that artistic intention is something they don't believe exists outside of games that look like OG Crash Bandicoot. I'm surprised no one tried to call the clouds in Archdragon Peak anti-soul gas with how bad it's gotten.
>>747148424>>747148424You can have both visual clarity and the fog in the distance. They aren't mutually exclusive.

>>747189340although I personally don't think ds3 looks bad: people criticizing dark souls 3 over its colour gradient is totally 100% understandable, it being "intentional" is irrelevant I don't think anyone has commented on it being intentional or not

>>747189791The retarded aspect is because if the color scheme was bright and vibrant, it wouldn't match what's supposed to be going on in the setting at all (and because the game does have some bright areas and contrast, as your image shows).
>>747189947The hell are you talking about. I said people overuse the complaint, I gave an example of someone overusing it. That's not deflection, it's directly illustrating the point. Are you just mad I opened with sarcasm?

>>747190161Okay, you are mad I opened with sarcasm. I don't care. I wasn't trying to copy one anon's entire posting style, I mixed a bunch of stuff from other posts, if that offends you personally that's your issue.
>>747189438Yeah bro you must be a developer that worked on a game right, you must know the lighting devs are doing. Just for no reason at all they decided to be retarded and intentionally made it worse for no reason
>>747190294>Just for no reason at all they decided to be retarded and intentionally made it worse for no reasonNot for 'no reason', but because they're outright retarded and spiteful.
>>747189979no one is saying every zone needs to be bright and vibrant either though, a lot of fantasy including previous dark souls games have this dark gritty environmental design but they can still have pops of colour so you're not just looking at different shades of grey for 50 hours. if you think it is fine and it was necessary for dark souls 3 to look like this, but it is equally fine if someone says they don't like it
>>747151198you stupid nigger, you can literally see in the distance on left that there are areas without fog, and that the area with fog looks like clouds of fog, its rolling morning fog you jackass

>>747190483I understand if someone isn't interested, but being that invested in every game having bright colors and saturation to the point of calling it "anti-soul" strikes me as way more autistic than enjoying one which is mostly gray for a logical and clearly explained reason.
>>747190529Not everything is about you.
>>747190784It has visual hallmarks of the trend, but I can agree it’s a dumb game to lead with.

>>747190784is it really such a weird thing that people might prefer games using something as fundamental as "colour", a game like Dark Souls 3 kind of melts together in a sea of grey the only zone I see people talk about is Irithyll. This thread is full of games that kind of just wash everything out. Out of all the things to complain about this seems pretty normal to me, like with some era of the MCU films where everyone is saying the colour palette looks like concrete.
