Yes, but this isn't a case and you're just looking for clickbait engagement like a youtubber. Now begone with you /v/irgin.

Is Older Link's tunic still made out of leaves? Because that what it looks like.
I really like how Young Link's tunic is made of leaves, but I don't think it works with Older Link. Why would he wear normal pants and an undershirt while still wearing a leaf tunic?

It's more like restrictive design, they used more realistic proportion, no exaggerated legs, hands or so, and to make it more interesting they double down on the materials. It's a a design from 3d modeler, not from the artist who paints

I think the tunic looking like it was made in a forest is fine and a neat idea. Maybe the gloves and boots didn't need so much of pattern, but it doesn't bother me. I'll be curious to see if the red and blue tunics have a different look to reflect the different places they were made or not

How do you know it? I mean the og was very simplistic in it's art style that we cannot know for sure.
Btw, how do you think the blue and red tunics will look like? Do you think they will be made of zora and goron skin?
>>
>>747324921
Dumb ESL. The art made it pretty clear that Link's clothes were made of normal cloth.
>>
>>747324385
They added horses to her dress, made the dress look like cloth, added stitching to her ascot/neck drape. They decided to make the forest kid's clothes more distinct from the hylian's clothes and this is what they went with. I'm sorry it's not just green tights and cloth tunics but I think it works/makes sense/is more interesting as a 'culture' within the game.
>>
>>747324682
okay so if people complain about the tunics being too faithful or a game being recreated too faithfully it's just 'faggot jeets', anyone who disagrees with (you) is just written off, got it

they already remastered this game on the 3DS, if you don't think nintendo clearly respect this game and have put a ton of thought into everything about the remake then you have brain damage
>>
>>747324921
>How do you know it?
because the devs were young, sharp and not senile yet.
they would never entertain such a retarded idea.
>>
>>747318113
"Overdesigned" only makes sense in comparative terms. If your entire game is extremely detailed, then a character that’s also full of small details everywhere isn’t "overdesigned", because it’s in harmony with the whole.
If the entire work is highly detailed, and you still don’t like it, saying that its problem is being "overdesigned" is merely a subjective judgment that says more about your taste than about the work itself.
>>
>>747318465
>Why would he wear normal pants and an undershirt while still wearing a leaf tunic?
Why would he wear any of that shit? A real wandering hero would probably just wear various plain cloaks and tunics, and would have to constantly replace them due to wear and damage.

>>747319394
I think this specific comparison is what make me realize I actually like the new look. I don't see the point in just re-treading the original artwork design for the umpteenth time. The 3DS version already did those drawings enough justice. Hell, the Smash Bros. Melee model already did it justice. I like that they're taking things in a new direction and embracing what a tunic actually made by forest-dwelling fairy kids would look like, while still maintaining the hallmarks of the original design.
>>
>>747324761
again it's simply more visually interesting to have their clothes made this way than with cloth and makes their dress more distinct from hylians
>>
>>747325369
>being too faithful or a game being recreated too faithfully
it doesn't happen. the only complaint that shone through in OOT 3D was a nitpick about the lighting not being dark enough.
when a remake is faithful it's literally a perfect remake.
>>
>>747325469
>and embracing what a tunic actually made by forest-dwelling fairy kids would look like
>>747321059
>>
>>747325215
they made sensible and good changes to Malon, and crammed Link full of as many details as possible, so stupid people go "wow, look at all those graphics".
>>
>>747325550
it's not even a remake though, it's just a remaster and just like when they re-release any game or update a game there would be a flood of people saying
>RELEASE SAME GAME FOR 80 DOLLARS PLUS TIP WITH ZERO EFFORT AHAHAHA NINTENDIES WILL EAT UP ANYTHING
I'd rather them put genuine effort into rebuilding the game from the ground up with new modern takes on the art than just increase the graphic fidelity on a game I played 30 years ago
>>
>>747325536
it's visually busy and ruins a simple and effective design.
They've done the equivalent of giving Darth Vader neon lights and engravings.
>>
>>747325630

>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8XVE5D7gpM
>>
>>747325870
it is busy but as a whole I think it's an effective design and I don't care if it's different than the originals, I've seen link in a green tunic for decades and it's always been iconic but handwaved as 'what the hero always wears', if he's raised by a bunch of forest kids and a tree then this is a fine reason for him to be wearing a 'green tunic'
>>
>>747326119
Okay, Mario should get different facial hair then.
It's new.
>>
>>747324385
>the rest of the characters aren't more detailed
They are, though. It's just proportionate to the kind of clothing they're wearing. The Kokiri clothes seem "more detailed" simply because they're made out of coarsely-woven grass fiber that creates a more textured feeling. Meanwhile, Hylian's clothes are made out of tighter loomed/knit fabrics, which have less obvious texture.

>>747325215
>I'm sorry it's not just green tights and cloth tunics but I think it works/makes sense/is more interesting as a 'culture' within the game.
This. After watching the trailer, it's clear their mission statement was to look at OoT in a vacuum and just embellish every potential detail they had to work with. Yes, I see the appeal in the older, more simplistic presentation and the charming notion that a kid living in a hollowed-out stump would be wearing a finely-knit tunic with an ironed collar and a belt from Sears. But we already have that representation. Now, I'm interested in the Link that wears clothes made from hemp and bird feathers.

>>747325878
This is one of those games that is simply going to need to be experienced to get the full effect. I think it's too easy to look at this videos on a phone or computer monitor and focus on opposing details instead of the more congruent ones. I bet once you're sitting in front of your TV and actually immersed in it, it'll hit different. Or maybe not. Who cares? Not me.
>>
>>747321059
Why the fuck are you having a melty over a tunic made of burlap?
>>
>>747326189
a better comparison would be when we saw mario's pants in brawl for the first time, they could have just remained a static blue but they made them look like actual jeans but I know this isn't the same and what you're saying isn't an argument at all really but I'm responding to you anyway
>>
>>747326271
So they went too far with the Kokiri, and changed the fundmental feel of the design, which they shouldn't have done.
Malon looks the way she reasonably should look with better graphics.
>>
>>747326343
Except Nintendo rightly realised at a certain point that shouldn't be wearing realistically textured jeans in his own games because it would throw off the aesthetic, and that remained a Smash Bros thing.
>>
>>747325791

>>747318113

>>
>>747326280
if it doesn't matter, why did they change it?
>>
>>747326601
Nintendo calls it an 'enhanced remaster' anon
>>
>>747326189
Seems like a false equivalence. They didn't change link's tunic. They just changed the way it's depicted. Similar to the retarded argument you made about putting Darth Vader in neon colors. It's not the same thing.

>>747326434
>which they shouldn't have done.
Nah, I think they should have. The Kokiri all looking like they were wearing store bought costumes in the original game was charming, but the clothing 100% clashed with the setting. Then, once you got out of the forest, many NPCs commented on how out-of-place you looked, when really, apart from the floppy hat, Link was dressed just like anyone else. It almost feels like this remake is purposefully addressing that contradiction.

>>747326519
>shouldn't be wearing realistically textured jeans in his own games because it would throw off the aesthetic
Okay. Except the OoT remake changed the entire aesthetic so that the new clothing design DOES make sense. And if the Mario series changed its aesthetic similarly, then having him wear highly-detailed denim would also make sense.

You guys are treating isolated design choices as though they are objective when they are entirely subjective. Stop being silly-billies.

>>
>>747326838
>things I never said
I just don't care. The cap on child Link is a couple sizes too big and the Kokiri sword looks like it's from Fable, that's my only gripe with the new designs so far. The babyfat faces are odd, but not bad.
>>
>>747326908
dude the tunic textures are 1. ugly and 2

>>
Link's tunic isn't overdesigned. The lighting engine is just weird and brings too much attention to the fine details.
>>
>>747327097
You're using the word "design" one way when talking about Mario's mustache, but a different way when talking about Link's tunic. Completely changing the style of Mario's facial hair is not the same thing as Link still being in a green tunic, but depicting it differently. It's a false equivalence.

>>747327265
>dude the tunic textures are 1. ugly
Subjective.
>and 2 scaled too large
Nah. It's made out of woven grass. That's just what it would look like.
>>
>>747319394
modders will probably have the version on the left hacked into the game within a few months, so I don't see why everyone is complaining.
>>
>>747318113
The Kokiri are creatures taking on the appearance of children and are little tree leaf people. In the context of the game it kinda makes sense that Links child tunic would be woven with more primitive material than cloth fabric but not adult Link. Other than that it looks fine.
>>
>>747327846
it's not a PC game.
switch 2 will brick itself and steal your money if you try to mod it.
Nintendo are anti-modding.
>>
There are a dozen ways you could explain the kokiri having textiles if you really wanted to
1. show a spinning wheel in one of the houses
2. say the Deku tree produces everything they need through magical arcane processes
3. say they're woven by the spiders, who used to be good guys before Ganondorf's influence made them crazy
4. introduce travelling traders
5. the faeries made it
6. they scavenge from materials left behind in ruins
7. the Deku merchants travel into town and buy shit at the store
8. the Kokiri aren't even real children, and are ethereal spirits of the forest

if you remake everything including the code that needs to be restructured because the OG OOT is programmed like dogshit then it's a remake.
lots of collision glitches were fixed in OOT 3D because the source code for OOT 64 has fucking awful collision checking and a really poor implementation of ray casting. they still kept in some of the most Iconic glitches deliberately tho.
>>
>>747328058

>>
>>747328058

>>747328058
yeah but I like them making clothes from plants more than them having fabric
>>
>>747326280
why can't people answer why they think "made in a forest" is a good defense?
they act like Kokori are so primitive they can't even make cloth but that's simply not true.
there is no scenario where they would ever have to make things out of grass.
>>
>>747328485
>clothes from plants

>>
>>747328485
bro your clothes are made from plants.
just not grass because that's not a valid material to make clothes from. it rots and falls apart instantly.
>>
>>747328370
Yeah okay but it's still considered a remaster, regardless, if you don't think there would be endless taunting and backlash about that 'remake' essentially being ported over to the switch 2 with enhanced graphics you're delusional.

Nintendo put effort into something and because it's not exactly how you imagine or think it ought to be you're up in arms. Is the design busy? Yes. Is it a bad design that clashes with the rest of the remake or internal logic of the game? In my OPINION, no.
>>
>>747328058
See, this kind of breakdown is a fairly good example of why I specifcally prefer the new art direction. You can shoehorn in some gay lore to explain/excuse why secluded fairy forest kids have completely normal/contemporary clothing, or you can just embrace it and have them make clothing out of twigs and leaves. The latter is an excuse to embrace an artistic direction, while the former is an excuse to ignore it.

>>747328439
>you think they can't make their own clothing from foliage and bark?
They can. And the remake shows exactly what that would look like.
>>
>>747328701
yeah but the tunics are literally magic anon, the zora one, the goron one, this one, the game is full of magic and the kokiri are magic, the deku shield could not block numerous things it can block but it's magic, etc etc etc

>>
>>747328994

>>
>>747328746
What they're doing in the new game is already going overboard with lore. No one ever asked where the Kokiri were getting their clothes from. They invented a problem for some reason.
>>
>>747328746
So, they can forge metal, and shape wooden handles on a lathe, but they can't spin wool?

I've actually done most of these activities in my life. I know how hard it is to spin something from sheep's wool (it's not that hard).
It would be harder to hollow out a giant tree to make a house.
>>
>>747329145
Claude gave them these ideas
>>
>>747328547
>they act like Kokori are so primitive they can't even make cloth but that's simply not true.
Based on what we've seen in every depiction, they don't. They have metal tools and wooden structures and furniture, but stuff like that generally predates textiles by... a lot. Finely woven cloths were basically one of the most effective forms of currency when explorers from Europe were travelling through less-developed civilizations of Asia and Africa.

>>747329145
>No one ever asked where the Kokiri were getting their clothes from.
I did.
>They invented a problem for some reason.
Your problem is that you view every change as though it had to be to address some "problem". They did it simply because it was an opportunity to add detail to the world through new art direction.
>the new game is already going overboard with lore
Forest people wearing clothes that look like they were made in the forest isn't "lore". It's just a congruent detail that needs no explaining. Your knickers are just in a twist about it because it's new, and new thing bad.

>So, they can forge metal
Can they, though? I never thought for a second that the Kokiri made the Kokiri Sword themselves. It was explicitly stated to be a "treasure" that they kept hidden. It's likely something that was found, or passed down from ancestors with more crafting skills.
>I know how hard it is to spin something from sheep's wool (it's not that hard).
It isn't hard if you know how to do it and have the tools and materials, sure. But the Kokiri don't have those things. Their primary resources are plants, so they learned to make clothing from that. It's not a question of ease, but a question of accessibility. I'm sure the Kokiri could do a lot of things if they were taught or had the resources. But they're a secluded forest commune, so making clothes out of grass makes more sense.

All their houses had table cloths and all of them were clothed in regular cloth. I'd say it's pretty clear they were capable of making normal cloth in the original game, because they did and you could see it everywhere. Some of their buildings even had canvas awnings!

There is a bit of a clash in the design. The pants and white shirt are coarse cloth, and the ladder braid of the cap and vest make you think of a more rustic/traditional outfit but then the leather parts are all intricately embossed with the biggest clash being the leather cuirass made of a bunch of highly specific leather strips shapes.

Link is already wearing a longsleeved undertunic. That's the white cloth.

The green tunic is an overcoat.
You can even see in the original art that it's standing loose from the white undertunic, hinting at a mail or leather armor adding padding inbetween.

It's a matter of knowledge and resources. Similar things happen in real world cultures who have limited access to certain materials. When Europeans travelled the world and interacted with/colonized different peoples, finely woven cloth was essentially as good as trading in gold.

I literally just read a story a week or two ago about this Scottish dude who was travelling through Africa and basically bought a little girl with a few pieces of cloth. The simple fact is that having the knowledge to figure out how to spin thread, as well as access to the resources required is a lot more lofty than people think it is.

I want to see what the other tunics are like. Kokiri tunic gives forest boy, which is sensible, but operates less as a default costume for Link. So, I'm wondering if the Goron tunic will be something really fierce, and the Zora tunic will be something really sleek

Medieval peoples actually wore pretty elaborate clothing with heavy detail work and the idea that they wore simple clothing is a Renaissance-era revisionism that was created to make people from the era feel more backwards than people living in the then-contemporary Renaissance. But /v/ isn't ready to have the conversation that most modern views of the medieval era have been filtered through a period of nearly 300 years of revisionism and propaganda created by Renaissance intellectuals to further their own personal agendas.

I was pretty insulted when Aonuma said OoT was 'not a game where you could go anywhere', it was as open world as humanly possible at the time and yes you could wander an ever-opening world just like every other open world game and even BoTW which keeps you on a plateau to start. I know their business model is to act like they're correcting and returning Zelda to lost open-world roots, but Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess were the only ones that were unopen as shit, Skyward Sword being completely unexplorable and Twilight Princess being unfortunately crippled by too many on-track wolf segment and other long unopen chunks of gameplay.
Okay fine Wind Waker is also pretty awful for making you play well for 2 hours before letting you fucking sail

It's literally a fantasy game about a legendary celtic-type elf man. I hate to go 'so why do you have a problem with a lexus in lord of the rings' here but we don't even have to do the math. The damn tunic was made by fucking fairies and long-lived forest children.
>>
>>747339152
This. But also this is Hyrule. A fucking fantasy setting. It isn't real. The clothing can look like whatever they want it to look like. And they decided ornately-embossed leather and coarsely-woven grass. That's really all the justification they need.

If someone doesn't like it, that's fine, but don't start citing historical prescedent as to why a fictional forest fairy boy's clothing is wrong.
>>
>>747318113

>>
>>747339405
The more people post the comparison, the more I like the new designs. Yeah, the old ones are iconic, but it's not like they're being erased. They've been done plenty of justice already.

Besides, it's pretty clear that this is just another 1:1 remake with a few tweaks to make it more palatable to modern audiences, so really doing something different with the visuals is kind of the entire point. If you hate them that much, you can just go back and play the original.
>>
>>747339152
I guarantee you farmboy peasants were not dressing up elaborately. That would be for urbanites and royals, and they are properly depicted in elaborate clothing in both OOT versions. They're stamped, which is absolutely something that a European noble might want, but not actually practical for marching. Travel and combat boots would be a much thicker cowhide and treated with all sorts of shit that would darken it and obscure the stamping.
Now, the argument is that this is high fantasy and we can enchant our clothes to be whatever we want, but the obvious goal for the rest of it was trying to make this look like something feasible and stylish. If you were just going to go magic clothes route, you could've put him in the silk dress and stockings like everyone apparently wanted (though I like this new design).

When you think about it AAA games suck now cause of a bunch of old 50 or 60+ year olds run things where back in the day the golden age of video games they were all 20 and 30 year old running things having great new ideas and were actually in tune with what the young people liked.

This is probably the biggest reason games suck now. Old farts who were once great stuck in the past.
>>
i think it's more like arbitrary addition of elements, rather than having too many in general. having artistic intent means you have to balance composition into your work, and i think making something visually readable means cutting down on detail. However, if it's needed for various motifs in your design, then it can be justified as well. it's hard to make that call. There's no universal law on how much detail should exist.

In this case, i think having the embossed patterns might be too much, but in motion you probably won't be jarred by it, or in a cutscene. the tunic fabric having clear hemp-like weaving is also a bit much, however i think with their style it's like they wanted it to be realism-esque, so there has to be some semblance of material going on rather than just a flat out sheet of green.

anyway, to answer your question, i don't think so. it's just a bad paraphrase for arbitrary elements that interrupt composition. you can do that with a minimal design too though, hence why i don't consider it valid.
>>
>>747321059
>hey faggot how did they make his leather shit in a forest?
Someone's never read My Side of the Mountain!
Granted, apparently the book was a little wrong about something. All you need to make leather is the hide, tree bark, something to boil water in, and a fire. You boil the tree bark in water and mush it until it makes this dark, tannin-rich concoction (why it's called Tanning), and then you soak the hide in that for a few weeks. You work it with the fat oil from whatever you killed to get it, and you should be golden.
You can dye or paint the color.
