Please be civil and lean towards discussing things you like rather than things you dislike.
And discuss VNs in general if you'd like.

Bonus: Why I'm making this thread
TL;DR To gauge if it's worth finishing the whole Rance series in my case.
Because I've finished Utawarerumono (and thought it was a bit less mindblowing than I expected it to be, though it was an excellent series), and am only a fraction through the Rance series, but I'm assuming people rate X so highly not because of, say, very intricate psychological writing, or themes or whatever, but rather because of the scale, the soul, the wild romps, the fun, the wacky characters, etc. Which is great but I don't know if I'd finish the entire series just for that (personal taste). So if the consensus is that the Rance series is pretty similar to the Utawarerumono series, that gives me a lot of data points going forward.
But that's only my motivation for making the thread, feel free to make the thread into whatever you want as long as we're not crazily rude. And I yapped a shit ton here but no need to effortpost. just lazy thoughts is fine
>>
As for why I picked these two to compare specifically, for me it goes like
>scale
>lots of characters
>gameplay heavy
>doesn't go extremely deep into any particular character (this is not quite true for Utawarerumono, but there are quite a few characters from there I thought could have used more attentive detailed writing like the Maro guy's arc)
>war, factions, period piece, etc
>fantasy
etc

>and am only a fraction through the Rance series
The Rance series only really gets good gameplay wise from 6 onward, Kichikuou Rance being the exception. III is where the world building starts to get moving.

That being said, I like Rance overall more due to better characters and world building, though the gameplay of the Utawarerumono SRPGs are better than the Rance SRPGs.

It's pretty much the latter, yeah

Rance, easily.
>and am only a fraction through the Rance series
Rance is one of the best examples in gaming of an IP that truly evolves for the better over time. Like, the ones before 6 are mostly pretty short porn romps with okish stories that have some fun plot beats and great sex scenes. Then with 6 most games becomes better than the last in just about every way. They do get pretty psychological with the writing sometimes, and touch on real themes like dealing with loss.

People love X but as someone that hasn't read it because English lmao, Rance Quest is one of my favorite games of all time. Insanely replayable because the cast is fuckhuge massive, and it retroactively makes every past game better because the Rance series does amazingly with worldbuilding and character continuity. The story gets into more serious shit with real stakes and drama and big twists, and plotlines for so many past characters continue while often becoming more serious than their original plots were. Quest is where I went from "haha Rance is le funny rape man" to "shit, they managed to make Rance a deep and flawed character while still having him be Rance". From the spoilers I know of X, that is 10-fold there.

The gameplay is even shockingly good because they took the huge roster (72 unique ones) and made most of the characters unique to use. Like, your team probably wants a tank, but that doesn't actually mean you need someone with the tank role. Emi is a returning Mage character you can optionally recruit, and she has a unique perk to represent her hidden masochism where she gains max HP every death, which isn't too hard because she has another pretty rare passive perk where enemies focus attacks on her. I didn't even know she was in the game my first playthrough because her recruit method (flee battles 3 times in a quest and survive it) just didn't happen for me, but on my 2nd playthrough she changed how I played entirely.
>>
>>747426340
weird comparison, utawarerumono is a great visual novel (that can have porn) while rance is just porn

OP, for an example of a more serious scene from Rance Quest, here's a screenshot with the name censored to avoid too much of a spoiler. It's not the most mindblowing sort of thing but it's played straight, even if the game bounces back to a more cheerful mood a bit after this.

Rance is pretty cool and the gameplay gets pretty good and bad at times but it's a lot less character-driven than a ray romano

Probably Rance? But I have far more to talk about and more passion when discussing Utawarerumono.
Utaware I feel has such a great introduction and such fun character interactions but because of how the trilogy ends it leaves a pretty shit taste in your mouth.

I should go finish 6... I got to the part where you meet Super Ghandi and was kinda just getting bored of the dungeon crawling. The characters are so charming in the Rance series tho.
>>
>>747435234
yeah 6 got really long before the mechanics got as polished as later titles, so it's a little rough. worth finishing or at least checking out the main story scenes on youtube to get to the rest of the series.

Rance.
Utawarerumono only has one good game, and it's the original.
>>
>>747426340
I don't think they are really that comparable, Rance has so many more games that go in wildly different directions in terms of gameplay and scale
I guess overall quality of story is higher for Utawarerumono because its pretty focused and cohesive for the three main games, Rance is all over the place and more standalone, though most games are still overall good
To be fair I haven't played Rance X yet, so that might change my opinion since that's the big epic payoff game after all

Rance has only one good game, which is Sengoku and it's only because of gameplay.
Utawarerumono trilogy is a whole package, even though the gameplay is passable at best.
>>
>>747446837
that's funny, sengoku has some of the weakest gameplay. units are pretty much only relevant for their type and not much else, the actual character attached to them means very little. the other later-half rance games have so much more depth to the combat, the only thing sengoku has going for it is that the bits between combat are the map-based strategy game instead of a dungeon crawler or something.
>>
>>747426340
utawarerumono i guess. characters, art, music, worldbuilding were excellent. sengoku rance was fun but rance himself was too infantile to appreciate and the h-content was too wide a net to satisfy any particular fetish. nonetheless the art was also excellent. characters were numerous but as a result, not as fleshed out. some tracks were decent, but not as emotion-tugging. worldbuilding, well, i can't rank it since it's mostly just japan with rance series characters.

gameplay-wise, sengoku rance has the edge. i love tactics game and utawarerumono's was good enough, but sengoku's was new to me and did it well. there's the darkness and also daisengoku mods but i haven't played those since you have to play all of the series to fully appreciate.

I still have no FUCKING idea why they decided to make a terrible JRPG for their "prequel" when their SPRG format was doing okay. I don't even hate MM story so far but good lord that gameplay is filtering me HARD. Will Uta 5 be even worth it or is this all for naught?

Uta for sure but I haven't played Rance X yet. Rance's tone is a bit too silly to take even the serious parts THAT seriously. The only one I really liked a lot was Kichikuou I think that did a great job juggling humour and lore while being overall darker.

Massive spoiler for the most recent Uta game.
I got around to finishing it finally, and fucking hell what a sad send-off, in every sense of the word. I actually did cry but even more than that I'm so fucking mad they actually pulled a retarded time travel retcon instead of trying to just make the story actually function as a prequel. The entire POINT of the series was to see Oshtor go from stick-up-his-ass-paladin kid to Ukon/humblesmug asshole and they completely fucked that up, they also really rushed through Mune and Mikazuchi's backstory as well. I'm like the words biggest fan of this fucking series and while I still found a lot to enjoy about it, it really felt like it needed to be a trilogy and got squished down way too hard and fucked with. It also fucking sucks that it's over, I wish Aquaplus wasn't retarded and could just figure out how to make some fucking money, dear god you have some of the best writers and artists in the industry, how do you fuck it up? Oh well.
Maybe something nice will happen in the future, but I'm not counting on it.

I'm not even saying that to be an asshole or based. I genuinely find the other games to be boring and generic, in complete opposite to the original Utawarerumono.
It's as if the future games made sure to be as annoying as possible while taking all the fun parts of the original. It's pathetic, if I want to read something generic, I read literally any other visual novels or your shitty anime video games.
The OG Utawarerumono was posed, mature, contemplative, introspective, had mature MCs, not many animu moments. The others are the complete opposite. Why should I care?

Haku alone is like an objectively more compelling MC than Hakuowlo is. The only "flaw" of the sequels compared to the OG is that it takes much longer to get into what the actual plot of the story is, but on the flipside the war setup is much more interesting and grand then the filler villain of the week setup of the original

i'm talking about two things.
1. the map. in FFT and disgaea even the most basic maps have terrain and verticality. there is no map in those games which looks like a flat area. FE has many such maps, or maps which are not substantially different from a flat map (e.g. flat with choke point)

2. the builds. just from that one screenshot, i don't see the item world autism of disgaea, or the subclass/ability autism of FFT. it's closer to FE by the looks of it

anyway that's just what i meant by it looks more like FE than FFT.
what do you mean by "in execution(take place right there"?
>>
>>747426340
I've been wanting to play Utawarerumono, is there any significant different between ports/versions that I should be aware of?

I only played Rance 01 and didn't end up liking it much, some parts were really funny but most of it was just really boring and lolsorandom, the combat system was what really killed it for me, I think I'll just play the older games when I get back to it
>>
>>747468315
FE has attacks take place on a seperate "field" to show your army attacking or isolating you and the enemy you attack(depending on entry) where as Ray Romano has attacks play out directly on the field like Disgaea or FFT.

If you can play Sengoku you can easily play Kichikuou. For me it was the other way around where I was overwhelmed when first trying Sengoku but Kichikuou eases you into the systems way better with a fairly prolonged "tutorial" section and you can't really fuck yourself too hard early on.
I wouldn't recommend Quest if you got bored of 6, it's similar but way grindier and way longer and the dungeons are less interesting and more repetitive.

>Idk how much each game suffers from not playing in chronological order.

wdym? They had just wiped out the original, largest hive on Earth and prevented the BETA hivemind from learning information about the XG-70. From then on the battle on Earth was pretty much in the bag. As for the larger battle of Humanity vs BETA on the Moon and in the broader Galaxy, that was supposed to be addressed in Integrate but that ones never coming out.

I didn't particularly like Uta 2 and 3, 1 was good. I think Rance X is a bit overrated, writing is too goofy for what it tries to do. Kichikuou is better in that regard. Series as a whole is enjoyable tho, and Alicesoft has some decent non-Rance games (Dohna Dohna, Dai- series, Toushin Toushi).

>mla is phenomenal
It really isn't. overhyping aside, the writing quality goes to the toilet after the extra arc, where 90% of the dialogue consists Takeru's shitty monologues about how much of a fucking loser he is, Takeru interviewing every female character in the game about muh resolve, or even more infodumps. The Valkyrie squad are literal filler characters and their deaths are so telegraphed I couldn't even begin to feel anything for them, while they also take away screentime from characters you're actually supposed to give a fuck about. Speaking of which, outside of Meiya the squad basically stop existing as characters and only exist to be Takeru's harem orbiters, something that was absolutely not needed. EVERYTHING to do with the 00-unit is so fucking bad I don't even know where to start, but nonsensical alien tentacle rape for fake drama speaks for itself.>>747482156 covers why the ending is donkey balls pretty well, but I'd like to add that in addition to being strapped to the handicap chair, Takeru's squad thinks so little of him they (correctly) recognize that he's overly emotional tard who will freak out and ruin everything if he realizes, which almost happens. Nothing about his character really changed at the end of the day, he's still dipshit sperg who needs to be babysat by his squad, which would be slightly less intolerable if every character didn't worship the ground he walks on for breathing

Fuck this kusoge, the only reason I say it's a 6 or 7 is because I thought the worldbuilding and BETA were awesome, the actual story and characters start off average and fall off a cliff

They first added voices in PS2 version, so maybe there's an unofficial patch to backport them to original game, the same way it was done for Fate.
>>
>>747493626
I am, it's one thing to play a shitty game but reading something overwhelmingly mediocre that has glimpses of greatness that it never lives up to is much worse. Takeru has one decent moment where he fights 10 Fort class jobbers and that's about it. Remember how he was being hyped up as a natural born leader all throughout Alt and even going as far back as fucking Extra with the lacrosse arc? That never pays off at all, in the ending he is literally being led around the nose like a dumbass, how is this satisfying character progression?

>only protagonist moment he likes is hype one
My dude people like Takeru because he is relatable, and suffers and despairs and cries and pisses himself, and grows from a little baby bitch boy to a fighter despite all the pain. He's never a full-on "badass" because this is not a setting where such people survive much longer than others anyway (other than in the The Day After timeline but that's after several years and by a different author, I consider it fanservice more than anything).
I'm guessing you're a Rance fan who wants his protagonist to be some power fantasy who gets all the bitches and doesn't take any shit, but that's never what Muvluv was about in the first place.
>>
>>747493749
Based on??? The only reason they could get a respite is that the BETAs are robots and programmed to not hurt sentient life so after the little discussion with Takeru the super intendent might have sent a message to the Hive to hold off on Earth because they might have made a mistake
But this is all headcanon and cookie's canon is that humanity somehow won against BETAs and their fifty birions worlds through G-element asspulls *eventually*
The actual truth is that they had to end the story, but there was too much to tell and the project was way too ambitious compared to their capabilities, the game got too long, they ran out of budget and shat out an ending.

>>
>>747494860
>after the little discussion with Takeru the super intendent might have sent a message to the Hive to hold off on Earth because they might have made a mistake
This never happened, Takeru never presented any convincing evidence.
It's simply the lack of central coordination will completely hamstring the BETA's ability to adapt and strategize, which is their main threat on a grand scale, so long as they don't let any other hive get to Kashgar's size.
>>
>>747494860
>But this is all headcanon and cookie's canon is that humanity somehow won against BETAs and their fifty birions worlds through G-element asspulls *eventually*
Where are you getting this? Even in that exogularity thing the BETA aren't even close to defeated lol
>>
>>747493607
>Whats stopping BETAs from sending another one right away? Or multiple at once?
Aside from what >>747494381 said, the Kashgarr Hive was (iirc) the only Hive that was at a level to be sending materials and information to space and was the point through which all the Earth hives would get their information updated (specifics are fuzzy for me because it's been 5 years). But essentially, the BETA at large would never even get the information that something is going wrong on Earth, which is just a tiny blip in their massive operation anway. And ultimately, like I said in >>747491860 the next phase after getting rid of all the remaining hives on Earth is to immediately launch an attack on the surrounding solar system. Everyone acknoweldges the war is far from over, but Operation Cherry Blossom marks the first time Humanity has clearly gotten a step over the BETA since they started fighting.

>>747494860
>so after the little discussion with Takeru the super intendent might have sent a message to the Hive to hold off on Earth
Reiterating what I said above, but the destruction of the Kashgar Hive cuts off all communication between the Earth Hives and the broader BETA hivemind that exists in the galaxy and beyond
>>
>>747494792
>his protagonist to be some power fantasy who gets all the bitches
That's part of the problem because that's what everyone else that isn't Takeru himself treat him as! It's insufferable to read because he is simultaneously a whiny, self pitying faggot that ALSO gets a harem of bitches and is treated like Jesus Christ incarnate by everyone for doing fucking nothing! The squads deaths are them literally lining up to profess their undying love for Takeru (despite barely spending any time with him in this universe) before kicking the bucket. And yes, after countless monologues about how he has to be better and how he won't run away etc. etc. for 30+ hours I don't think I'm wrong to expect him to be a little bit more than a babbling retard who almost fails at the one job everyone else sacrifices their lives for during the final stretch. I'm actually an Uta fan and thought Haku did the whole "average guy is thrust into a war and leadership role he was never prepared for" premise light years better

Yuuko is the ONLY character to actually treat him like the mouthbreather he is, Meiya is even okay with him "raping" her because he's that amazing and important to everyone. What the fuck are you talking about, the entire point of pre Extra is some chinese regression shit where he's meant to be this super soldier that's good at everything due to his experience in Unlimited only to rugpull that facade with his first taste of real BETA combat, but his squad fellates the shit out of him before and after that arc

Gachas are modern VNs and both Utawa and Rance are half gacha franchises anyway. They have their share of problems, but it’s the only place today where you can get a VN story with an amount of effort comparable to stuff like MLA, Muramasa etc.
>>
>>747505585
Every gacha I've tried (many over the years) has had its story suffer for being a gacha to variying degrees. And not a single one has had good gameplay or consistent writing compared to actual VNs. It's a trash medium for storytelling and those who shill it for free should suffer.

Nigga, 90% of actual VNs are nukige slop with kindergarten-tier writing.

Most gachas have that and a lot more, because they usually have a lot bigger budgets than any VN except for maybe Type-Moon ones. It’s just objective reality.

Yeah then why do they have any gameplay at all you dumb nigger cunt? I played a decent amount of BA, up to the end of 3rd big arc with the student council shit, it was garbage and the gameplay was embarrassingly simplistic.

>90% of actual VNs are nukige slop with kindergarten-tier writing.
90% of gacha are worse than that lol, and you were comparing them to actual high tier VNs like Muvluv and Muramasa, not random moege.

>Most gachas have that and a lot more, because they usually have a lot bigger budgets than any VN except for maybe Type-Moon ones
Simply unfucking true, most gacha don't even have voice acting, don't have many CGs, rarely have action scenes as those are usually replaced by their dogshit gameplay. Despite having 1 million times the budget they have 1 million times less effort and quality.

honestly I've played a lot of gacha (every mihoyo gacha starting from hi3rd, both arknights, the two kuro games gacha, hbr, guardian tales, nte, counter side) and aside from guardian tales I wouldn't put a single one of them above the worst moege I've played when it comes to being memorable, they all have especially terrible dialogue
I dropped HBR rather quickly though so I can't say much about it, but even if I didn't these games just don't commit to memory ; I can still remember some SMEEslop moments but I wouldn't be able to remember a single moment of OG AK (that I dropped around Dusk's release) if held at gunpoint despite spending a lot more time on it

anyways, anyone know any good VNs that have a ghost/tulpa romance? holy shit subahibi give me straight diabetes with that shit. I know there's technically Root Double (even if that ends up being a red herring) but holy fuck I remember having a good time with it until the whole final arc just ends up being BEEEEESHEEEE BEEEESHEEEE BEEEESHEEE spam everywhere.

>Since his retirement, TADA has continued to assist Alicesoft as a play-tester.[4] He additionally began working a second job as a part-time employee at a grocery store before quitting at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.[44] He also maintains a blog known as the Haniwa Development Office (ハニワ開発室, haniwa kaihatsu-shitsu) that he updates regularly. The blog focuses on recounting his career and describing his beliefs about game development as well as the various hobbies he has taken up in his retirement, like reviewing video games that he is playing in his retirement in the section called "Game Diary" (ゲーム日記, Gēmu nikki).

Guess we don't know really know at the moment...

saying gacha is just gambling is the same as saying vns are just porn, you're being obtuse

uhhh someone on /mlg/ posted spoilers before but from what I remember it's
all the girls are carbon based lifeforms used just to suck off MC's vitality or something. apparently one of the student council pres or members realizes and tries to help MC but then gets eradicated and replaced. I may be wrong. I'll re-ask in /mlg/ for you.
>>747522227
kek sorta true. one of the more spicier zeldas for sure.

here, I asked in there, but I'll try to find more on it:
>Every BGM song is from the trilogy
>colony spaceship arrives at suitable planet after 2000 years at 10% lightspeed (they are out of g-elements for gravitational travel or something, have a g-bomb with them though]
>planet likely has carbon life on it so the crew decides to start observing it because they are operating on star trek rules where they will not take over the planet by force because "that would mean we're just like the BETA!" , if coexistence won't be possible they'll grab resources from other planets and leave to find a new planet
>After months of this they find a BETA Hive on the planet, BETA must have arrived recently so they decide to get into their TSFs to fuck up the hive to save the planet and secure g-elements
>queue entire orbital descent battle with BETA where Antilaser bombs are dropped and everything, fort laser class even shows up when they're on the ground to damage the spaceship in orbit. Except this entire battle doesn't show a single BETA sprite, it's all text only. Very strange choice.
>They enter the hive, get fucked up, and MC blows the G-bomb and actually gets back to the ship
>60% of their TSFs are fucked, 70% of the ship so everyone in the ship starts losing their shit and lord of the flies style
>MCs childhood friend(captain) loses her shit and decides to use terraforming, ai and gene editing to turn the native aliens into a wageslave version of humanity for resource generation
>literally larping as the Annunaki
>"we're only gonna do it to two isolated islands, it's fine :)"
>MC is moralfagging and won't accept it, forms a resistance, gets owned and thrown into cryosleep
>wakes up after 10.000 years and while in a haze, walks all the way to a TSF and pilots it to the planet (yes really)
>Gets brainwashed by the AI

Nah I was jerking off to gelbooru. I'm not embarrassed of VNs having h-scenes though I think they add a lot to them, unlike gachaniggers who constantly have to make excuses for their dogshit monetization system and terrible gameplay.

Not that guy, but I felt Chaos;Child had better romance with the main girl. Probably just my bias though cause I ended up liking her more than all the other Sci;Adv heroines

How would it even make sense for silicon based life to exist? Silicon turns to fucking glass when it hits O2.
>>
>>747523615
Not that anon but I thought there were entire planets which have atmospheres almost entirely free of O2. Like Venus.

>>747521278
I feel like the serious moments in Rance hit harder exactly because the default tone is usually silly and irreverent.

O2 in earth's atmosphere is a product of life, not the other way around.

Also the series had a surprisingly nuanced take on JRPG tropes like demons and "the evil empire" and such, for an eroge from the 90s anyway lol.
