For me it's definitely Genshin, its motto of "Ad Astra Abyssosque" is emblematic of the experience.It does a lot of what WoW used to have that pulled me in, but at the end of the day it's still gacha with its own shortcomings.Dragon's Dogma 2 on the other hand gave me a nice party traveling simulator, I hope the DLC will be good.

You can make one corner of a vast city 1:1 scale and have in the background the illusion of size which you never really have to zoom in on. If you're going to do Gondolin you have to Disneyland it. If you truly wanted to replicate the feeling of the books, instead of creating a generic LotR-themed Skyrim, you would need to add some form of time gating mechanics. Remember, from the very start Frodo is told that his quest is urgent and that Sauron's forces are on the move, and that it may already be too late. There is a constant cadence of danger<->safety throughout the first book (technically books 1 and 2 of the first volume before some pedantic Tolkien nerd corrects me) with the four hobbits on the run from the pursuing Nazgûl, finding brief moments of rest and safety before having to move on. You don't see them doing video game shit like side quests, grinding materials/xp/faction rep or exploring for the sake of exploring. There's also no backtracking (at least not until after destroying the ring). You do read about them worrying about the weight they're carrying, their limited supplies of food and water, where to sleep, where to go next etc. - typical survival game elements.You would have to make a game where in a single playthrough you can only choose ONE path out of many different paths. Your starting node would be the Shire, from where all paths diverge, and eventually converge to Mordor. Each node would represent some portion of Middle Earth, and you can't return to previous nodes. Every time you move from one node to the next, time advances, and enemy troops advance on the map. Not unlike FTL or Slay the Spire, but on a scale that would cover all of Middle Earth.
