North American game development is so fucking dead. Even if Americans were not woke, they just are not worth their ridiculously inflated salaries. Europe and Asia are the future of gaming.

>In fact, Saber has "no real development in North America any more," as Willits tells GamesIndustry.biz. The company is headquartered in Florida, and a handful of its subsidiaries are based in the US, but the vast majority of its development wings are spread across Europe.
>"The problem is stuff like this: big North American development studios, they run about $2 million+ in burn rate a month," Willits says. "A month. SnowRunner, which has made hundreds of millions of dollars, costs us $6 million to make. That's literally three months of development time in California. So just run the math on that. If it takes [a big studio] five years to make a game, that's 60 months, that's $120 million just in salaries."
>"Sometimes I play these games – I won't mention the game – and I can just see the wasted money," Willits continues in the new interview. "I can see dollars falling out of the monitor. But I can tell you that the development cost for [Warhammer 40,000] Space Marine 2 was a third of a major game that just released not too many months ago from a big North American studio. It was a third, and it sold 11 million more copies. You don't need to spend $150 million to make a billion."

https://www.gamesradar.com/games/third-person-shooter/space-marine-2-dev-says-its-games-are-so-profitable-in-part-because-theyre-made-outside-of-the-us-and-the-company-has-no-real-development-in-north-america-any-more/
>>
That is mostly due to American industry still being obsessed with west coast as a "talent hub" while rest of the world has already caught up to US devs in both production value and skill with half or even quarter of the salary costs.
>>
Do CEOs of european game studios act like CEOs of american studios where they take multi-million dollar bonuses after firing decade-old veterans from their studio to "trim the fat?"

I've heard that in Sweden (which is obviously a game dev hotbed right now) management isn't a position that's considered above the rest of the studio nearly as much as it is america
>>
>>747463932
Am i supposed to be upset or something? So long as i get more games like Space Marine 2 i don't give a damn where they're made.
>>
All they need to do is to move to the flyover states, but for some reason it is impossible for American studios to not be in California.
>>
>>747464306
In Sweden, every worker must have a union available to them, by law.
Which means that corporations have significantly less power since there is always a union looking out for workers regardless of the type of business or specific company.

Probably because a lot of talent gravitates towards bigger economies and large cities. Outside of indie projects it's probably not viable to open a development studio in some town in the midwest.

Valve's strength is that they stay small. They only have like 350 employees.

Less like "lucked out, more like they were the only ones who stuck with PC through 00s and early 10s when every other game corporation thought that PC would die and consoles would be the future.

He's not wrong, especially when the dev studio is located in California due to as he states how high the salaries are I mean fuck a basic salary is $15 an hour, a fucking hour for a Mcdonalds worker.
In Czech with a basic salary for a junior dev you're on less than $10 an hour, that's entry level. It will go up but that's starting rate, it's probably lower than that as well (Yes I know Czech has it's own currency I'm converting here).
The point is that's salary alone and not including benefits, and all the other crap on top, then you've got compliance rates, energy cost.
The U.S. and Canada are simply not attractive prospects when it comes to game development.

Then you go into the politics bullshit which brings down productivity because you've got retarded DEI hires, or woke employees who decide to strike, or they want to argue and include something in your game that it was never intended and you simply don't get that amount of headache in Europe. I'm not saying it doesn't exist at all, but in the U.S. and Canada it's just beyond a joke, look at what happened with Blizzard and how the Woke retards took over there they accused the old guard of doing cubicle crawls and drinking during the day drinking breast milk from the shared kitchen, there were lawsuits people were fired lost their careers and the Woke retards took over.
Only for it all to come out years later that it was all made up, none of that was real and it was a plot but those Woke types to take over once and for all at Blizzard.

So yeah why in the ever loving fuck would you want to deal with any of that from the massive cost in monetary value for game development to the personnel issues, the U.S. and Canada need to get their collective shit together if they want to be in this industry in the coming future.

i don't know why would any company work in the us they have 0 talent and extremely expensive also for solo indie devs too, in my country i need to only sell 13k copies at $20 to fully retire at upper class lifestyle, 40k copies in something like thailand, and 70k copies to retire in europe, any indie dev would be completely fucking retarded to live in the us

A lot of game dev studios in Europe don't hire exclusively from University but from people who show competence.
A degree isn't the automatic in for a lot of game studios that you think it is, you've got to prove you've an interest in said studio or game catalogue for that studio, show you know specifically the skillset they're looking for.
There is weirdly still a lot more merit based hiring in European game studios than in the U.S. when it traditionally was reversed. It's a lot harder to get hired in European game studios based solely on having the 'right politics'.

> I've heard that in Sweden (which is obviously a game dev hotbed right now) management isn't a position that's considered above the rest of the studio nearly as much as it is america
Workplace culture is very different in Sweden, the hierarchy is much flatter. And there’s a bunch of laws to protect employees. It’s far from a perfect country, but at least workers aren’t treated like slaves
>>
>>747465117
>>747465245
>make it illegal to build houses
>import millions of illegal slave workers who take up resources while providing no real value beyond being servants for richfags
>a house now costs a million dollars and people refuse to work for you unless you pay them enough to afford to not be homeless
What did they expect? Tech hubs like the bay area and seattle are fine because tech profit margins are high enough for it to not be a problem and the talent can't be found anywhere else, but for something like entertainment it was never sustainable. High iq autistic programmer geniuses are rare, 3d artist grunt workers and code monkeys are not and there's no real reason to not just fuck off to somewhere else.

>>
>>747464501
That's just where many of the early tech companies started, and being in that area made it easier to find talent and do business. Or find work if you were looking for a job in that sector.

Telecommuting, self-publishing, and high taxes are slowly changing that, but the big corporations adapt slowly.
>>
>>747465664
>Tech hubs like the bay area
The larger bay area and tech hugs are doing fine. San Francisco is dying and COVID killed it (remote work, the second people suddenly realized they didn't need to live in that horrible city, they left for good).
>>
>>747465802
Yeah, and for film its because California was a developing state at the time which meant lots of free real estate to scoop up for stages, theaters, film studios as well as housing for performers and the people on the technical side of fimmaking.
>>
>>747463932
Yeah makes sense.
>>
>>747465885
The other part was Thomas Edison trying to make a monopoly on film at the time and bullying anyone trying to get into the market buying from him or just not buying at all. A lot of people said, "fuck that" and moved westward. Because it was a lot harder to demand people buy your shit if they were on the other side of the continent.

Space Marine 2 was ok, like a 6 or 7 out of 10. its success got carried hard by the 40k IP. The parry system is tiresome and breaks the flow of gameplay, the fury system from Space Marine 1 promoted aggressive gameplay a lot more

I feel like offices locations is also a problem. Every other studio has their office in LA, Santa Monica or San Francisco. No way the rent and shit like electricity and water are cheap there. You could probably finance a small to medium game with these expenses.
And in a world of modern internet why don't more studios hire devs from small towns from other states? IIRC Banner Saga games were developed by people from all around the world working from home.

No it wasn't. It was a monoculture. It was multi-ethnic not multicultural. There is a very large difference. Roman culture, Roman law was the absolute authority, there was no tolerance for other cultures, they were completely wiped out and outlawed.
Julius Caesar as an example conquered Gaul and the remaining people there within 100 years were 'Roman' and by that I mean they were completely practicing of Roman law, Roman culture, worshipping Roman Gods, their own laws, culture and worship of their own Gods was completely forbidden and outlawed.
You have history completely wrong if you think the Roman Empire was multicultural. Why do you think that Roman monuments and I do mean Roman were in every single province they rule from Palmyra to the North of Briton. If it were multicultural then Rome would allow it's provinces to build their own monuments based on their own systems but they did not because after Rome conquered them, they did not exist anymore.

Work culture and immigration are separate things (or as separate as such things can be, it's all part of society). But basically, what happened was that the Middle East had that whole Arab Spring thing and that turned into a bunch of violent conflict and a bunch of people fled from there around 2015 or so. The swedish government at the time thought it'd be a great fucking idea to be morally upstanding and help these people out (not a bad thing in itself), so they put the word out that refugees were very welcome in Sweden and implemented policies to make it easier to come and stay in Sweden. What they didn't count on of course was that the Middle Easterners that did come were basically all young men (those with the means and ability to actually travel really fucking far). And that there would be A LOT of them. Like a fuckton more than expected. So shit went down, we had a minister crying on live TV because they had to restrict immigration and now a decade later we're still living with muslim gangs recruiting kids to bomb suburbs while the party who wanted to restrict immigration back in 2016 but lost in that election (and they wanted less restrictions than were eventually implemented) is now the country's second largest party and still gets called racist.

>>747468814
Oh, the Sweden Democrats aren't actually racist or "far right" at all, they just get called that because it's easier than meeting their actual arguments. By American standards they're pretty damn progressive. A lot of their actual policies that don't regard immigration are centre-left stuff. Sweden is just generally a left-leaning country (and has been for a very long time) and many Swedes like to think of themselves as very progressive.

It makes no sense lore wise, the gene seed makes the subject look more like their primarch gene father, they would bound to have candidates from all races yes but a black guy would still end up looking more like Dorn. You could take the whitest guy in the universe and he would end up having obsidian skin if he was implanted with Salamander gene seed.

the USA have reached terminal muttification, it affects everything, just look at the country and people there
>>
>>747469316
I'll explain this to you because it's how most countries want to operate. Almost every country, their population wants these things, welfare, a social structure, look after their elderly, their young, they want something there if they are out of work and want healthcare. What they don't want is their country to be flooded with third world men who rape and murder, coming from war torn countries they have war torn mind sets they aren't coming to build they are coming to destroy. That's what people in these countries in Europe and elsewhere don't want, they just want their borders secure and a future for their own children. They've been labelled 'far-right racist' for not wanting to be raped and murdered and this is why things are so retarded now, because the simple want of not wanting to be raped by a Middle Easterner who has been at war for ten years doing heinous shit there or an African with hiv is seen as 'extreme'.

>In Sweden, every worker must have a union available to them, by law.
Patently false. Föreningsrätten (Rights of Association) is enshrined in the law Medbestämmandelagen §7-9, but it does not require there to be a "union available by law" for every worker. It allows for the workers, and the employers, to organize themselves without hostile interference from the opposing party (and makes it so you need to prevent your members from interfering with the rights ot the opposing parties to do the same), but you won't have a union available to you if no one has organized one, and if your employer hasn't signed a collective agreement the union holds very little power in your workplace.

The Swedish video game industry doesn't have a specific union that only organizes software developers, the closest one being Unionen (The Union), who organizes most white collar work without really specializing in any specific field of white collar work. Whether or not people in the video game sector are actually in a union I can not say for certain, and looking at a studio like Arrowhead for example it seems like it's company culture is born less from the active work of a union and more from the fact it was a startup by a bunch of friends from university.

>tl;dr no, you do not get a union for free by law, but under the current law anyone can organize a union whenever they want
>t. swede that's actively involved with the unions

only a very select few gene seed outright changes your skin color, and in those cases they are considered mutations not features, and more often than not those changes are very subtle such as making your face look a bit more like said primarch and even then only slightly (Horus Aximon who did look like Horus was considered a massive outlier among the legion for that to the point some thought he was just a clone which should give you an idea of how rare it is), the only legion where looking like your primarch being somewhat common is the Alpha legion, and even then a good portion of that is due to the fact they employ surgery just to fuck with people, then use surgery to make you look like somebody not Alpharius since having everybody look like him will just make it harder to infiltrate other space marine legions

Is this game just campaign slop or does it actually have some fun coop mode? What is the coop?
>>
>>747470663
You have a full co-op campaign and two other modes: Operations, where you play through set scenarios that are slightly randomized every time, and Siege mode, where you fight in an arena against increasingly more powerful waves of enemies. The Operations mode has seen a steady increase of free content released over the two years the game has been live (there are now more than double the amount of scenarios on launch if I remember right), and the Siege mode is getting a facelift in the next major update.

The game is also fully supported with mods that people have made, opened up the game allowing 12 player co-op, more classes, more weapons, more scenarios and armour/ gear.
You can mod in Custodes as an example, here's my lad taking down a Carnifex.

>>

You don't have to buy the cosmetic packs, they're completely optional. There's still a huge selection of chapters and designs that aren't required to be bought through dlc but you earn in game.
Look I know people like you just want to shit on everything and get that instant dopamine reaction, but that's not how it is at all.
They have released free Operations missions, and modes, they could have charged for them if they were completely soulless and wanting to milk the game, they're still releasing free updates and next month there's two more modes they're releasing for free Crucible and Chaos Siege.

This is happening across all American industries not just videogames. Investors are calling the shots, those investors do not give a fuck about the product. They want to take talent from everywhere and cram them together, not giving a shit if they have worked on that thing before or have any experience in it, they are "high value" workers so they will produce high value.

This is something Americans dont get why people dont want to join them, their culture has become something akin to "to big to fail, youll lose your job before I lose mine". Greenland cited this when it was offered to join America, and they just pointed to how America would turn them all into goyslaves for billionaires to rape their countryside
>dont you want money?!
Yea not American money, not anymore. Videogames have gone the same way, the money is good, but if it was just about money youre not going to attract the right kind of talent, thats how you get legions of jeets who work under minimum wage just to tell people they are hard workers.

Flyover as perceived by people who like to go outside has no real attractions like a major city. You see some of these views changing like with studios that moved to Atlanta. lmao the Roman empire was syncretization central. They didn't say "Isis is foreign heresy, crush the temple, purge the mind, EXTERMINATVS", they said "yooo Isis kinda Venus-coded?^^ xD" and subsumed colonial beliefs. Especially on a local level.

Turns out, colony cattle is MUCH more docile if you largely let them keep believing in their mud gods AND give them a pathway to coming around to your foreign beliefs using syncretization as a bridge.
Doesn't mean Rome valued every culture as equally special and beautiful, they were just pragmatic and tactical about integration. And although the norm was that Roman culture eventually drowned out local culture, terms like "Graeco-Roman" should clue you in on how often backflow happened and Roman culture changed instead.

I think American studios really bought into this idea of prestige
that they have to hire the best engineers and art school graduates to make good games
And they don't have much to show for it
they're mediocre in terms of both art and technology.

Meanwhile, European and Japanese studios make much more impressive games with whatever resources they have, often with only a few really experienced people in senior positions

Eventually, mid level people, from concept artists to technical staff, become good enough to lead projects themselves, and the cycle continues.

California was actually an insanely nice, libertarian, tech and media powerhouse before Ronald Reagan legalized all the illegals there and turned it permanently blue.
It's a testament to how fucking absolutely wealthy that state was in both physical infrastructure and human capital when it perma flipped to blue in the 1990s.
It's taken almost 40 years for that state to actually become a shithole and near insolvency.
That's how it works tho, Detroit took almost exactly 50 years from the riots in the 1960s to finally collapse into bankruptcy.
It only survived because it was bailed out by the state and feds.
Cali may or may not get that same bailout, but if the govt in power is smart, they'd force it to break up into smaller states given how catastrophically it's failed.

That's broadly how it used to work and in some cases it still is - for example whenever Valve decides to take a break from swimming through their giant Scrooge McDuck pile of Steam money and actually release a video game. The single biggest problem with big American studios today is that they're so bloated and corporate that they can only produce the blandest, "safest" design-by-committee products you've ever seen because anything remotely different or novel gets sanded down by senior managers who don't want anything different or challenging because they want to make the most accessible wide-audience game ever because they want a gorillion sales and that's the only way they can think of achieving that goal.

SM2 is a bizarre game where the deeper you get in the more budget you can see. It's all kinda trudging along until the level where you get jetpacks. Then it becomes action movie with cutscenes, setpieces and cinematics-filled finale.
>>
>>747494472
>I can spam dodge there as well.
And? You can do that in the Tide games too. The limit and cooldown before regenerating are so insignificant that you don't need to think about it after getting used to the rhythm, so much so that dodging on rhythm is exactly what you do in the game. Not that it's bad. Mindless headclicking is very therapeutic. But if that's your supposed to be your "gotcha" for SM2, then not only do you have a surface level understanding of SM2, then you also do for the Tide games and video games in general. In you mind, it's just "stamina limits are good" and no critical thinking can be found in it.

The funny thing is that gamedev actually pays jack shit compared to other IT jobs. The industry benefits a lot from passion labor where people are willing to put up with shit pay and working conditions because they like games so much.
But even then compared to other nations, America is dragged up by the finance system. America is through which all money in the West flows and within America it's all going through platform capitalists that sit in Sillicon Valley(with the big exception of Steam). Of course you'll be paying through your nose for people when they could just go to your neighbor that passively prints money or some AI startup to gamble on getting bought by Google, Apple, Nvidia, etc.

It's a vicious cycle that's screwing up every Western country. Companies don't want to go there because the workers aren't there, workers can't go there because the jobs aren't there. So everyone must go into the same few cities, rents explode, so salaries go up, so even more people come in from the outside.
WFH could have helped us, but companies can't allow it because it gives workers too much mobility. If switching jobs is just changing the passwords you type into your PC each morning and people aren't exhausted from 1h+ commutes they might not tolerate quite as much bullshit from their boss and we just can't have that.

American corporations have spent billions of dollars propagandizing against unions so that they could get rid of well-paid American workers and replace them with poverty wage immigrants. Yeah, there have been a few like the Teamsters in the '60s who were sketchy as fuck, but most have been nothing but a net positive for workers. I'm a union aerospace machinist and make $68 an hour for a job that pays less then $40 at non-union shops, and I didn't have to beg or fight for raises to get there. My dad was in one of the rare white collar unions and they took the fight to companies when they tried to stiff him on pay, and he's still got health insurance and a pension after retirement because of the union. Dues for both of us have always been pennies on the dollar compared to how much more we make than non-union people and neither of us have ever had any kind of trouble with the union either.

Mine is also really easy to get into, since it's a field with a shortage of qualified people, you basically just need to have the experience for the job and the ability to pass background and drug tests.

also I'm aware that a lot of people aren't satisfied with some of the live service games listed feeling they're either buggy or their content pace is too slow and I wonder how much of that is them having a healthier work culture.

Like Embark with Arc Raiders just straight up said "We can't match the pace of something like Fortnite, if you want to abandon the game and come back when there's content- that's fine" which I can't see a large american studio ever doing. Respawn for example killed a bunch of their other projects to feed Apex's content pace.

>Any worker protection can be organized by the workers themselves
That's literally what a union is. It just turns out that dealing with huge companies on a national level is a full-time job so you end up having to have specific staff for it but most of the actual union stuff you deal with as a worker is a "local" that's just for your area or even one factory and the people there are from the industry and sometimes even doing it part time while having normal jobs.

Also, the leftists haven't turned on unions because unions are so bad, they hate unions now because unions protect existing workers and so they oppose shit like replacing white employees with DEI hires, they defend employees from baseless trumped up HR witch hunts, etc. They're also largely associated with blue collar work and leftists hate real jobs.

I think he's right about the hottest place but only technically, since it's in Death Valley and has basically no bearing on the rest of the state. I'll dispute the general weather thing with you though, not that many people actually get to live in the cool coastal regions. The majority of the greater LA area - the valleys, the IE, most of OC, etc. - is brutally hot a lot of the summer, same for San Jose and other parts of the Bay outside SF proper, Sacramento, etc. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and that shit was miserable for a whole lot of reasons, but especially the weather, now I live in the Oregon high desert where summer is mostly around 80 and winter is just cold enough to get some snow and it's fucking paradise to me.

What makes it worse for game devs is that a lot of them work in Santa Monica etc. but can't come close to affording to live there on their salaries so they end up having to live in Northridge or some shit and spend 2 hours fighting traffic on the 405 to make it 20 miles to work every day and then have to leave the 78 degree weather at work and have to go back to 108 degree hell at home.

Yeah exactly.

>I'll dispute the general weather thing with you though, not that many people actually get to live in the cool coastal regions.
I mean we get hot summers more interior sure but it's still usually cooler and nicer than most of the US so no, it's really not an accurate thing to call California "hot". That anon just has no understanding of the state. We also usually don't get the humidity that something like the east coast gets. And no bugs too in the south, so nice. It is warmer literally since we don't have winters of note, but that just leaves you with very pleasant weather and never dealing with ice or snow.

>When you see anti union socialists and communists, you know it's bad.
from my understanding unions are inherently not communist, something about unions being special interest groups for their workers or something. like in a communist state, imagine if the dockworkers union wants better working conditions. for communists, the state represents the will of the people and are the sword of communism on earth, so the selfish union is a bunch of reactionaries trying to sort of privatize the means of production, which belong to all and not just the specific workers that work there. According to communists, of course.

Why would an artificial womb need to get an abortion? There have always been Asian Space Marines, the White Scars were Mongol-inspired with some other Asian influences from the beginning. (Or at least 2e lore, I'm not sure if they were in RT.)

You're also glossing over the heavy Roman influences (most prominently the Ultramarines) as well as the Crimson Fists, who were the poster boy legion before the smurfs took that role (they were literally on the 1e rulebook cover) having a ton of Spanish/Latin names.

space marine 2 is pretty different but it has way more content in co-op and stuff. campaign is fully playable co-op and you have a separate co-op campaign

it's also a bit more structured than pure power fantasy, a lot of people complain that the bolters feel weak because the combat design is a bit more like halo where you have a lot of fodder weak to headshots and tanky "elites" who require concentrated fire to kill

I sort of enjoy the idea that during the DAoT there were some random Asian dudes or whatever that were so hardcore into larping as vikings that they moved to the viking planet and so on. Not even that farfetched considering how many people in the real world are obsessed with other people's cultures too, look at weebs or their Japanese westaboo mirror images, or Americans obsessed with Ancient Greece and Rome, and so on. A black White Scar's ancestors could've been the equivalent of those black dudes who are really obsessed with DBZ or whatever. (Also in a way it's inadvertently based that those racial differences still exist since it means that their cultures stayed racist enough that they didn't all interbreed themselves into homogeneity.)

You do realize 90% of the argument exist because of religious people right? The same people who tried keep a woman in a coma alive despite her brain literally being watery mush. They don't need science.

Anti-abortion point would be that the baby is it's own person (they believe life starts when sperm meets egg) and going to abort is killing an individual. This is what they argue now. Moving the sperm and egg into a baggy with a sign off sheet isn't going to change that.

It's like a whole nation that decided being even cheaper than jews was a good idea.

the chinese software engineer matured out of being thirdies and their labor is too expensive relative to cost already, similar to american developers living in overpriced san Francisco bay area apartments.
>>
>>747531417

>>
>>747531596
Both.
>>
>>747531540
I don't have any opinion on whether a Shanghai engineer can live a first world life on a $60k USD salary, nor about their quality of life compared to a Bay Area engineer on a $200k salary. We are not discussing this, but rather why games are better to develop in poorer countries with lower salaries. Given a market that has access to games developed anywhere in the world, it is cheaper to build a game in a lower cost economy than it is to build it in a higher cost economy as a game is a commodity not too different from a physical good you can buy made in China or India.
>>
>>747531540
Indian software engineer salaries are not too different from Chinese ones and oftentimes higher. Especially if employed by US companies. It's not unusual for an Indian salary to be $80k+, and more due to RSUs from US company stocks.

Kinda both. The big US cities that have game studios have gotten so expensive (especially the CA ones) that people can't even afford to live within commuting distance of the office without a 6 figure salary, but Euro studios, especially Eastern Euro, also pay salaries that would be considered abysmal by any US standards. That's true of Japan too btw, real jobs that you need a degree for etc. pay like 40k a year.

The movie industry picked LA in its early days because it had good weather for filming, which mostly had to be done outdoors in bright daylight in those days, and there was lots of ranch and farmland that was close enough to major railroad stations for easy access but cheap enough to buy in large tracts and build film studios on. Once that industry was established there it drew other entertainment industries since there was a lot of crossover between them, and that's continued all the way up to modern times.

Incidentally SoCal also used to be a big aviation hub for the same reasons, good weather for flying and cheap flat land they could buy and build big factories with their own runways etc.

The Bay Area became big in game development and other new forms of entertainment because it was already a major tech hub, which in turn was because of the universities and government labs there.
