Those who lived through it, describe the 90s as a PC gamer
No shitskins. Zero.

The internet was like two islands, one was USA, Europe, Canada, etc, the other was Japan. The world was beautiful, full of hope. The games were good. The future was limitless.

>>747471610Pizza shop across from the Comic Shop which also stocked Pen & Paper RPGs and had space in the back rooms for wargaming & painting. And the arcade & pool hall a couple doors down alongside a Mom & Pop computer store with two computers near the front to demo the games they were selling, and the used book store at the end of the block.Good times.
I used to kick my pentium PC a lot, my pentium 2, 3 and 4 too
>>747471610Mostly played strategy and puzzle games. Command & Conquer, Theme Hospital, Championship Manager 97, Myst, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Sim City 2000. I had a friend with a really good set up with voodoo graphics and 4 of us would huddle around his PC after school to play stuff like Quake
>>747472167No shit. CRT flicker sucks, but I kept playing.
>>747471610Cleaning up your mouse was a chore.Grime built up in the ball socket.
Dad installed a game on his computer and showed it to my brother and me when we were little goobers, we were blown away because we've never seen a computer game before, it was a nice feeling
>>747473175I still play Theme Hospital and the remake they did some years ago that I got for free on epic
>>747471610>all those big box games, of the entire C&C seriesI'm jealous.
I was a 90s gamer for like two whole months. Nobody had any internet, everyone had pirated gaems regardless.
I remember walking into a PC shop and the smell of new hardware was everywhere, was so awesome, the smell of the magical smoke
>>747471610Imagine owning PC games like you could own board games and such
It was a coinflip whether a new game would actually work on your pc and troubleshooting was torturous. But I had endless fun playing demo disks that came with magazines.
>>747472792Imagine being so mindbroken by AI, anything he sees is AI.
>>747472690this is trueboth western games and japanese games were doing good and pushing gaming further as a medium
>>747471610It was comfy maxxed. A golden period of constant technological development and wild west game design.>>747473767>It was a coinflip whether a new game would actually work on your pcThis was definitely a drawback since every dev was kind of doing their own thing, but I just accepted it when a game wouldn't work since I could always play different stuff on friends pc's, and that was part of the magic of pc gaming back then if you had an especially shitty computer, you'd always get introduced to interesting games you hadn't heard of yet.
>>747471610>playing demo discs and shareware versions of shit to absolute death because poor>getting a PhD in DOS memory management to be able to launch a game and have all the necessary drivers loaded>every other game having some kind of weird hoops you need to jump through to get any kind of sound working>being absolutely blown away by the OG Doom>constant envy for consoles and arcade machines because until around the time win95 and first 3d accelerator cards came around, they always had better graphics and smoother framerates>dad teaching me how to edit saves in XCOMThese are probably my biggest memories from early 90s PC vidya.
>>747471871True. Relating how extremely good that is to people that haven't experienced it is hard. Like asking to recreate it. And they don't deserve it.Everything was for like a higher class of people that was brought about by expecting it.Modern people are the exact opposite.
>>747471610Lost futures.
After school we would go to a games rental (they would rent out the whole box with manuals and discs) than to a copyshop to xero the manuals so we could bypass the protection once we returned the games. I remember having to copy dozens of pages regularly and having a really heavy bag due to all the fucking paper. Sometimes you had to disassemble the code wheel and remake it from copies, made 7yo me feel like a spy. As a PC gamer specifically it was great to have all the sims and strategy games but shit on the action sidescrolling side so it was nice to have home computer and console cucks in your friend group or family. Asking mom to drive 80kg of shit to your friend house or a lan back and forth came with the price of timed slavery usually. Naked woman pictures/videos access before everyone else was a major flex.
>>747475227
>>747471610It was glorious. Games were all made by nerdy white and Asian men. If niggers were in a game they were based black men like Shadow Man. Kino was to be found everywhere. Games came on physical media in big colorful boxes. You could easily buy some game knowing absolutely nothing about it other than what you saw on the box and unknowingly start playing one of the GOATs. Women in games were designed to be as sexy as possible. Things were more innocent and identity politics were nowhere to be seen.
>>747472142It's true, faggot. Quake was the white and asian man's domain.
>>747474540>>dad teaching me how to edit saves in XCOMSCUM

>>747471610I think the craziest thing everybody took for granted at the time is publications like magazines were made by and for hobbyists, and while they contained ads on specific ad pages, they were not adverts. They were informative, speculative, and worth reading because information was harder to obtain. It wasn't until the hobby exploded in popularity after console games like halo appeared that games journalism became unethical.
>>747471871^ This. They were 99.999% filtered by a general lack of interest and it was an incredible time.
>>747472806This. It's actually really easy, download a bunch of GOG games, download a strategy pdfs, unplug the internet.
>>747471610I think it's age dependent, I was a 5-15 during that decade and therefor poor and games were really expensive, we got nes like a year before we got snes. I had maybe 5 nes games and played 5 more at friends houses. Snes lasted longer so I think I had 8-10 games and probably played around 25 in total. After that we got pc and the games there were cheaper, after a year or so many games got special poortards editions for around 10 dollars/euros and later on you figured out how to pirate and cd burners became cheap and then we got DSL in the late 90s.

There was an incredible unwritten promise of amazing gaming worlds but it never happened. We got dull copy-pasted creatively bankrupt tedium and gambling mechanics instead. In terms of innovation, 1990-1999 were probably the most interesting years in my experience.

I feel like by the time DVDs were a thing digital distribution was picking up and publishers were still using CDs because not everyone upgraded to a DVD drive. An individual game was usually not bad, but Baldur's Gate was a trip with its 5 discs in 98. It was never just one game though, just the fact you had a bunch of discs which were either burned copies or stored in those disc holders where everyone tossed the original jewel cases, but even before CDs you'd get a handful of floppies.

>>747471610Games were fun because they were designed to be played for enjoyment rather than designed to keep you attached to drive up player login metrics. Bad games existed, but there were so many gems that people still dig up games that they never got to play or never heard of. It was a time where you could go to the store and buy a game and end up with a local gem or a very rare game that nobody had heard about and have a really good time. And online play was good. Internet wasn't in every country and every low income household. The people who joined lobbies weren't third-worlders seeking social credit or depressed burger flippers who were too afraid to pull the trigger or angry faggots seeking social approval through twitter moments. Your lobbies were full of people who liked playing games and wanted to play a game with you. My first "nationalist conflict" with other people wasn't even in the 90s, it was in the early 00s in some Graal Online server where Canadians declared war on Americans.Shareware was so prolific that you always had hundreds or thousands of games to sample at any given moment, some of which allowed online play. It was also common for multiplayer games to have pass/spawn style multiplayer in which you could buy a game, install it on your friends PCs, and they could also connect online to play as long as it was with you. It was normal to share your PC games with friends so you could all play together.tl;dr games were actually meant to be played, there were a lot of them, and the majority of people online were friendly and wanted to play.

>>747471610If you were a ruralfag, it was suffering. The nearest city didn't really have a computer shop, so you had to get obscenely lucky to get a real game instead of shareware. There was a software shop at the mall, but they only really had "real" software and not many games. They only had a rack of disks and each shareware game was 5 bucks (a ripoff, yeah, but it is what it is). I remember finding X-Com: UFO Defense at a Wal-Mart and went fucking apeshit. I begged my mom to get it for me. It remains one of the highlights of my vidya youth. Things got easier around when Quake 2 came out.

There's lead in the front glass which blocks all x-rays. The flicker can cause short-term eyestrain and headaches but that in itself isn't going to lead to permanent issues, and some people are more sensitive to it others anyway. (I really hated looking at 60Hz and especially 50Hz screens after I got used to 70Hz on PC right from the beginning...)

>>747471610In the early days of 3d PC gaming, graphics drivers were all over the place as was the hardware itself. You never knew if a particular game was going to run properly or not or if updating your driver was going to then break your favorite game which was already running perfectly. Probably my favorite part of 90s multiplayer gaming was the fact that dedicated servers basically didn't exist. So anyone could host a game server and you would eventually find your favorite place to play and make friends with the regulars on that server. This was really prominent with games like Quake and Half Life.
>>747483275True for the 3d games but swat 2 was a strategy 2d game.

>>747488096Well high blood sugar levels or high blood pressure can cause changes in vision so improving those conditions could possibly improve eyesight without reversing aging of the lenses. There are some other conditions as well which could affect it separately from lens aging. But aging and stiffening of the lenses itself is sadly inavoidable and everyone will need glasses or surgery eventually. (it'll be reading glasses only first)

>>747479581I'd say much later than that, it's somebody's "retro" setup judging by the yellowing on the mouse and monitor, the image quality, and even the IMG_ filename which usually means it was taken on an iPhone. I don't remember that style of minimalist white desk being common until 2010-ish either, '90s computer desks were usually either wannabe CEO looking dark wood paneling or curvy cheap-looking white wood and black metal with multiple tiers for monitor, keyboard, etc. Pic is my setup from 2004-5ish but the desk would've been several years old at that point and is a good example of a typical late '90s/early '00s desk.
>>747471610Lots of exclusive games that had their own vibe. Many games were slower paced compared to console games which were mainly action focused. Not to say there weren't action games on the PC, but they tended to be FPS's.
>>747479956Great games but they were from 87.
There were way less games in general (there was still tons of slop don't get me wrong) and everyone sorta had the same core set of games. Everyone had Starcraft, Doom games, Quake, Half-Life etc. The rate of graphical progress was insane, went from simple 2d shit at the start of the decade to fully 3d games at the end. One of the worst things about modern games is there's not really a core set of games everyone in your social circle can play, there's so many games for specific niches in interests. LAN parties were cool as shit, everyone would lug their computers one kid's house and we'd be playing huge CS matches or Half-Life deatchmatch or Starcraft FFAs.
>>747510262in the 90's OFFICIAL dedicated servers weren't really a thing people made unofficial servers, and you needed something like qspy to find them or finding the IP address on an IRC or something, but around the turn of the century that changed and there were official dedicated servers that were set up and maintained by the developers/publishers, and there were in game server browsers to find a mix of official servers and unofficial community servers (the real golden era from like 1999-2009), there were still some games without the in game server browsers so qspy became gamespy and was used for things like Q3 and Battlefront where there still weren't official dedicated servers.2009 is when they moved to peer to peer.

>>747512390Yes, exactly, but these community-hosted servers were still called "dedicated servers". The command line arg in Quake 1 to start one was even "-dedicated", in Quake 2 you used "+set dedicated 1". This was in contrast to what were called "listen servers" (again Q1 command line arg was "-listen") where somebody was playing the game locally at the same time as they were hosting a server and accepting connections from others on the same computer, which gave them an advantage due to zero ping and could also cause extra issues for the other players because some of the server computer's CPU cycles were now being used to render the game, play sound, etc. instead of it being wholly dedicated to accepting client connections and simulating the game world only.
>>747514167>The command line arg in Quake 1 to start one was even "-dedicated"I wouldn't be surprised if that was actually the origin of the term or at least where it became standard, so much shit in gaming descends from Quake to this day and it always irritates me that people skip from Doom right to Half Life in their retrospective shit nowadays. (Especially given that Half Life was basically a really elaborate Quake mod, arguably.)
>>747514167I know, I'm just saying I understood what the other poster was referring to and there is a difference.Official vs Community Hosted. Both are dedicated servers though.

And now nvidia is pretty much telling gamers that they dont need us anymore and if we cant pay the huge gpu prices we should just fuck off.
>>747515586I think it is, the first time I saw the terms "dedicated server" and "listen server" used was in Quake 1 docs. I guess in theory id could have adopted the terminology from somewhere else, but where? As an aside, QuakeWorld removed support for listen servers completely and split the client and server to separate binaries (qwcl, qwsv). Then Quake 2 moved everything back into one binary and restored listen servers.Another aside, listen servers aren't the same thing as old Doom-style multiplayer where every player fully simulates the game world, running the game in lockstep, and everyone is just passing game inputs to each other checking for desyncs occasionally based on player coordinates or such. (there's probably a surprisingly large number of games which use this approach in p2p matchmaking even if it's not appropriate at all lol)

It was mostly glorious. The western internet was young, and trolling was a respectable art form that required creativity. "Ragebaiting" or flaming as it was called was banned on sight. And trolling was kept to a minimum. You could actually have comfy discussions of games without tribalistic retards ruining discussions. Like, you could talk about the merits of Fallout 1 & 2 without some retarded fight over which is better ruining everything. I will say there were plenty of normies on the internet, but they were self contained to chat rooms and music websites. The rest was pure nerdom. The biggest downside is that culture was largely this vague sort of liberalism. You definitely had racist parts of the internet like the various alt.flame groups on usenet, but most places were smug "black people good, white people evil" and if you disagree with that you got banned. Still, it was such a better time. Oh, and there were also insane "that kid" rumors everywhere. Like "if you beat super mario world in under 2 minutes your SNES will load a copy of Doom" rumors. And Metallica was also everywhere.

There were two computers in our house growing up, both absolute shitboxes and only one that was connected to 56k internet. The offline one was on the bottom floor of the house while the online one was on the top floor next to my parents's room. Our mum wouldn't let the internet be on because she didn't really understand it and was worried about getting a huge bill or something. I somehow worked out that there are guides/walkthroughs for games on the internet after being stuck in DotT for a couple of days. Both I and my brother (who was four years younger but a super smart kid) just couldn't work out what the fuck to do. We got desperate because we loved the game so much and wanted to know what happened to all the characters, so I secretely logged onto the internet when my mum was at the shops and found a walkthrough and copy pasted it into notepad or something. I thought I'd solved the problem until I realised that I had to get the guide from upstairs to downstairs where we were playing the game. Mum had come home so I had disconnected the internet and turned off the monitor so that she wouldn't suspect anything. Then, suddenly the solution came to me: my little brother had an ludicrously good memory, so I sent him upstairs to read the guide and then come down and tell me what he'd read. We finally got past the part we had been stuck on for what felt like an eternity. Every time we had trouble from then on I would send him upstairs to read the guide. He didn't make a single mistake in his recollections of what he'd read and we didn't ever get stuck in the game again. We completed the game together and hugged each other. It really felt like we'd worked as a team to manufacture an ingenious solution to our problem. My brother passed away two weeks ago. I lost my best friend and miss him so much every day. It's the small memories like this that I'll cherish.

Fuck the Zoombinis Pizza challenge, that fat retard would cheat constantly
>>747473767i had this problem too. the demo disks were godlike but i was a poorfag using weird third party graphics cards so nothing ever worked right for me.
>>747471610I literally only played Blizzard games, aside from Age of Empires.
>>747486701It was because they were ex-hippies before they became hardcore Christians. Their whole youths revolved around a Beatles-styled "love and peace maaaan" counter culture which they brought into culture after they left that all behind. They couldn't imagine kids wanting war and violence, they were supposed to want to play acoustic guitar and sing about peace. Funny enough that's also why Boomers hate all those old cowboy shows they grew up with: too violent and imperialistic for them.

>>747524352I can't speak for any other boomers, but my parents (born '46 and '47), who were full-on San Francisco hippie movement types, just chilled out and eventually became somewhere between center-left and even somewhat right on some issues. (My dad fucking hates the tranny and woke shit in particular and has also gotten pretty fucking racist about blacks and arabs.) They also fucking love old cowboy shows and binge watch all of Hopalong Cassidy on an annual basis but my mom makes them skip a few with violence toward women and also the one where they go to Saudi Arabia or something because she fucking hates arabs too and can't even handle people pretending to be them on a Hollywood backlot kek.
>>747473767Oh shit I remember this. We'd go buy computer games like three times a year when my Dad was in town (parents were seperated) and the game my brother bought would work perfectly while mine didn't WITHOUT FUCKING FAIL. It was ridiculous.I distinctly remember one time I chose such a cool looking game (I think it was Mech Warrior, or some other mech game) that my brother was more excited about playing my game than even the one he had chosen. We got home and Dad installed brother's game, booted it up and it all worked fine. Usually we'd play for a bit and then install mine, but this time my brother was so excited about my game that we asked Dad to install my game to. I remember him clicking on the .exe and saying over and over in my head 'please work, please work, please work.'Lo and behold it did'nt work, and both my brother and I were super bummed out lmao
>>747525008That's so based. Usually you can tell a lot about a boomer's character by their attitude towards old cowboy shows.
>>747486701the mere existence of demons in media is seen as worshiping them or at least endorsing them.I had to have this discussion with neighbors who had kids I played with that though Diablo does have the devil, your goal is not to worship him, you were going to kill him. They were more okay with it once they understood the whole goal of the games was to oppose and kill Satan and demons and fighting to protect a Church. I had one friend who was homeschooled and his parents were very devout Christians but they let him play Wolfenstein and Doom because the enemies were Nazis and Demons, that made sense to them.
