I'm not pretending.

Can we stop having the same rpg threads every day in general? If the ONE person who was making these threads over and over was gone I'm certain the board would improve by 1000%. You can noticeably tell when they go to bed because the board is briefly usable.

>>747485426all i see is /v/ call is pseud trash for commies
As great as Xenogears' story is, it actually fails at being a good video game story because the second disk collapses on itself and just becomes a visual novel of infodumps with boss fights thrown in, and then even most of the fucking lore of the game is in a supplementary textbook that details the plans for huge series that never came to be.
>>747482978Your image is outdated. /v/ has moved on to bigger and better things.
>>747486248They're just ultraliberals getting filtered.
>>747486354What really sells Xenogears story is the sheer ambition and what they tried to cram into an ultimately failed video game with budget constraints. It's probably the most ambitious and conceptually dense video game story ever made if we're excluding multi-part series.
>>747483112>posts one of the bad ones as an exampleskeeter
>>747485930kek
>>747482978>"Ye like my wee tail? I'll wag it at ya."
>>747486354The problem is the useless namedropping. In the Japanese version, "God is dead?" is explicitly underlined as if it were a quote, but it is completely misleading. It is an isolated instance, unlike Xenosaga, which constantly name- drops and uses Nietzsche in a highly superficial way, but it is disappointing coming from an author who claimed to have read him. If you read him, why did you implement it in such a misleading way?
>>747486067Bro tell me of some books that have dialogue as well-written as that of Dak'kon, Coaxmetal or Vhailor. You can't. I read a lot and most of it is terribly boring, there are very few writers that can produce lines that just get burned into your brain like the lines in PST.
>>747484813bodied that freak
>>747486713if the writing is so good why didn't they just make a book? any story they're trying to tell is completely bogged down by the medium
>>747482978/lit/ is extremely broad, those are both better than most bookslop that comes out nowadays.
>>747486354>>747486503Like, I wouldn't call Xenogears high literature or high art or anything but I consider it the closest a video game story has gotten to the level of classic sci-fi authors like Arthur Clarke, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Frank Herbert and shit.
>>747482978Is /lit/ meant to be a synonym for good? There's tons of slop literature out there.
>>747486797>those are both better than most bookslop that comes out nowadays. So you agree that some modern books are still better despite being slop, and older books were better in general? Not a good argument in favor of videogames.
>>747486067Xenogears just ain't all that. It's kind of the potential man of JRPGs.
>>747486863>Arthur Clarke, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Frank Herbertsure, I guess Xenogears is also mid like them
>>747486934I mean yeah I like books more than vidya, doesn't mean some games don't have literary value.
>>747486863>Isaac AsimovSpeaking of Isaac Asimov and Xeno stuff, Xenoblade Genesis literally looks like it's stealing it's core world concept from pic related.
>>747486786Disagree, games give you a lot of pacing, music too. My favourite writing is in Cultist Simulator: Exile and there you see some lines hundreds of times and it gets more powerful every time. Whereas other text you can only see after ten hours of gameplay or looking for it very carefully. Books cannot reproduce this, the reader has to do the pacing. I read very fast, lot of literature just doesn't stick with me.
Peak of books > Good books = Peak of vidya > Good vidya

>>747487706I never got what's interesting about the Fei and Id thing at all. It's just an anime version of a Freud concept which wasn't that crazy in the first place, genuinely don't get what people find fascinating about it.Looking forward to playing Xenoblade.

>>747486354>it actually fails at being a good video game story because the second disk collapses on itself and just becomes a visual novel of infodumps with boss fights thrown inBlame squaresoft for that one, they refused to keep funding it because ff7.It was not intended to be like that, the team HAD to summarize disc 2 or leave the story incomplete.>>747486712To be somewhat fair, translate xenogears accurately to english is very difficult, there is currently a fan team making a translation as faithful as possible, but they are very slow.
>>747488214Fei is like Raskolnikov.
>>747488608I may be forgetting the plot but I don't remember Fei (in current incarnation at least) doing anything outright evil and trying to rationalize it but being unable to bear the guilt.
>>747488571>It was not intended to be like that, the team HAD to summarize disc 2 or leave the story incomplete.Kind of crazy how some of those story elements could've easily been their own discs.
>>747488571No no, I didn't mean it was a translation issue, in fact, the translation removed the underline, so it's actually better. I'm saying that Takahashi claimed to have read a lot of Nietzsche, but he quoted him out of context there. I don't know what it is with some Japanese creators, Takahashi, Tomino, Anno, spouting random bullshit about this kind of stuff
>>747488728He killed his mother, destroyed his village, Elru, Solaris. Technically it was Id, but the whole point is that it's still him, he blames no one but himself. And even the Coward, after their mother's death, selfishly kept all the happy memories for himself, leaving Id in the shit.
>>747488834>Kind of crazy how some of those story elements could've easily been their own discs.Just like xenosaga.Xenosaga was meant to be 6 discs but everything went to shit after episode 1 so episode 2 was extremely rushed (they didn't even add shops) and episode 3, while almost as good as episode 1, had to rush the story. It's a pity that there can't be a lore-heavy xeno series that doesn't face financing problems.
>>747487378existence is slop
>>747488834I'd feel bad if they didn't piss away so much time on bullshit. You'll spend 2 hours on a gay prison break segment, then disk 2 hits you get a powerpoint on how Bart awoke the Fatima Secret interdimensional weapon capable of vaporizing the earth and defeating a literal angel.>but it's not their fault, square cut their funding at the last minute Shoulda coulda woulda, the game has too much filler
>>747489615>You'll spend 2 hours on a gay prison break segmentThe prison part was meant to foreshadow how mutants are pariahs, making Elly/Sophia attempt to cure them/help them in the end be more meaningful and 'saint-like', plus that solaris was doing bullshit behind scenes with the "monster" on the sewers.Imagine you remove it and replace it with Citan telling Fei that mutants are discriminated and Elly explaining that solaris is doing bad stuff behind scenes. That would be bad storytelling.
>>747482978xenogears is good and unironically the best or one of the best written gamesi don't know or care about the other
>>747490102Not as bad as Elly becoming the new blessed NONVIRGIN mother Mary and bringing world peace in a cutscene
>>747490237what a non issue to have a melty over.
>>747490372>meltyI'm cool as a cucumber, the back of the game sucks shit and even being charitable it's payoffs suck dick that show a woeful misunderstanding of not only Christianity but even gnosticism. The whole story is like a bad game of telephone, I can picture the Jesuit priest saying "uhhhh sure" that resulted in Japanese people thinking Jesus ran away to Japan and became a famous samurai or some shit
>>747490583Ah, so the problem is you're overvaluing the importance of accuracy of christianity in relation to the superseding and more important japanese creative team and how they shaped the story they wanted to tell. It really is a non issue.raffs.
>>747490583Can you elaborate?
>>747490793>overvaluingI think if you're going to use terms, prayers, icons, and images that you should demonstrate you understand them, yes Anno. The key failing of gnosticism without some kooky jap even misunderstanding that and thus creating layers of misunderstanding devalues the entire story.
>>747486248Never take gaming recommendations or opinions from /v/Disco Elysium is a fantastic, humourous and emotional experience
>>747490927Ogey but the anime story is objectively more important.
>>747487264Comparing video games to books is like comparing heroin to love
What kind of teen moron thinks some vapid crap like PST or xenogears is comparable to reading literature? Why try to pass crass and flanderized dialogue referencing pop culture and bad anime off as some aesthetic work that will help you grow as a person? The evidence is in the threads. Every last one is repetitive squabbling over arbitrary lore and dumb meaningless questions. The central theme of PST is posited by a guy literally named "Puzzlewell". It's fucking retarded and is a misleading question designed to make stupid people argue on the internet. It's not exploring any deep themes of human nature.
>>747491037You don't belong here and don't have a valued opinion tourist kun. lmao>inb4 fringe outlier seething and tantrums
>>747482978Xenogears really is like watching a 50 episode mecha anime or reading a long ass sci-fi novel so the comparison makes sense actually.
>>747491012I'll concede the anime and political story are good, but I tune out when Takahasi is desparately trying to prove he didn't just skim the first chapter of John
>>747482978Who don't video games hire actual writers since they seem to make a big deal about them even if gameplay comes first. It can't be that expensive to hire a writer when your budget is 300 mil nowadays.
>>747491324What I mean by writer is someone who can prove they can write by having made something good due to their writing. So not fully limited to books but also not a writer who has credits on something successful but not due to the plot.
>>747490890>elaborateI'm fine with Church Evil, it's cliche but it's easy so whatever. The images of the cross, Elly being a great healer and reincarnation of the universes virgin Mary but having to repurpose her as more of a mother Theresa/padre pio at the 11th hour, Fei and Cain being sons of an Adamless Eve, it's like "fine" if youre exclusively trying to do your own thing but it borrows so much while also not really understanding it that it becomes apparent that most of what you know about it is presupposed by being Japanese and reusing the most out there Gnostic interpretations of it that can't even be reconciled by a plain reading of scripture. Its the same shit as evangelion, just kooky Japanese guys reading some weird gnostic encyclopedia that's 8-10 editions behind and saying "Eschaton, that's a cool word!"
You sound hangry. You should eat some Peopoli McHuman. I hear it tastes great.
>>747491863>It's people>bro wtf why'd you make me eat that>so you'd understand, moving on!T-t-thanks?
>>747491324
>>747491324>>747491952
>>747491324Because video games is comparatively easy and lower stakes scenario writing which isn't capable of reaching the heights of other mediums. It's more like the kind of writing that would go into a family guy skit or a sitcom.
>>747492153Thank God that's exclusively a problem in the cheaper stories in the western side of the industry.
best opening scene
>>747491717I didn't know that. I think I should look into it further, because there is a difference between an intelligent reinterpretation (like Dostoevsky's Grand Inquisitor) and a disconnected or unnecessary use. You don't have to make a study guide out of that thing, but if you want to subvert it, you should show why you chose that specific thing. It's more disappointing than Anno because at least he stated it explicitly.
>>747492239Scenario writing is more heavily utilized in japan than the west, which is why the xenogears guy has never written a book. I am literally just repeating what he himself has said. He is not skilled enough to write a book.
>>747487049> silverbergzionist propganda
>ctrl + f "patho">no resultscome on guys.
>>747492306Ill just say, if you stripped back all the religious references and made it stand on its own with unique images and unique archetypes, the game(specifically the gnostic religious parts) wouldnt be praised as highly as it is. I encourage everyone to read up on Christian theology not only because I believe it, but so much of Catholic theology and Church history is so interesting, it's captivating even through an atheist lens reconciling it as mythic.
>>747492990Oh yay, the dunning kruger gang is all here now
>>747482978It's about on par with better science fiction/fantasy genre fiction but it feels better because of the involvement of the player in the story, enhances the emotional connection to events in a way a book can't.
>>747491324Because writing for a video game comes with a lot of annoying constraints as you have to write around the gameplay and level design and it large games like RPGs there is a lot, lot of shit to write for side quests and random npcs and all that and most real writers aren't interested in doing all that nonsense.

>>747494971I always assumed most weebs do
Planescape Torment is just literary shock horror with some elements of Stephen King and Lovecraft mixed in.Haven't played Xenogears but most Japanese games are really bad at telling stories and mostly rely on strong and colorful characters more than anything else.
>>747483112The only good VN I've ever played was Uminenko part 3. Strictly because you could tell the writer wrote himself into a corner and he just asspulls stuff for 2 hours straight to make it work anyway.
>>747483112Is Fata Morgana good?
>>747511991I'll be a little pedantic but if by "/lit/ tier" we literally mean games that fit that board's particular taste, then MAYBE The Last of Us one and Disco Elysium because they respectively copied the fuck out of pic related? >>747483112S;G was mid.
>>747513358Yeah I meant good as actual literature. I know the medium has a lot of commercial constraints, but how long has it been? At least 50 years. It feels weird that there isn't even one exception without reservations

>>747482978>/lit/ tierI have no idea what is going on at /lit/ but considering how every other specific board is absolutely shit at what they're for, such as /tg/ being bad at mtg, /fa/ dressing worse than Reddit or /mu/ being a collection of absolute dogshit cacophonies, I disagree, because XG is KINO of the highest order.
>>747512739It's not like E33 is anything like Ulysses, bro. A lot of the text in Hylics is literally randomly generated. That's probably the closest that you can get to Finnegans Wake. There isn't a dreamlike game where characters and concepts fade together, sometimes fading even into the landscape, often flowing into and out of scenes, usually without being described explicitly, in a circular narrative that vaguely revolves around some sort of sexual crime, probably incest, the imagery of which is spun via a "language" that conveys "feeling" more so than "meaning". That's just not the nature of how video games work. Simply cannot be portrayed. I think Hylics is more like Finnegans Wake than LSD: Dream Emulator, for example, even though LSD is more "dreamlike"
>>747513701Imo the best I've ever played is Planescape, I agree with a lot of the critique it's already gotten ITT, but it has some special moments and unique characters. Overall it feels like a 7.5/10 dark fantasy novel. Fans of that game should check out books/writere like picrel.
>>747514141>"language" that conveys "feeling" more so than "meaning"ever heard of stream of consciousness. ever heard of automatic writing. ever heard of poetry. ever heard of literally any female fiction writer ever.

>>747514141>A lot of the text in Hylics is literally randomly generated. That's probably the closest that you can get to Finnegans Wake. There's not a single random word in Finnegans Wake. You should listen to David Lynch and Joseph Campbell talk about it.
>>747514461Are you AI? Do you even know what this conversation is about? Have you read even a single page of Finnegans Wake? Have you ever read any book at all? >>747514584>There's not a single random word in Finnegans Wake.I know that, but the text in Hylics is random and therefore "incomprehensible", much like Finnegans Wake is borderline (or fully, depending) "incomprehensible" without a read-along guide.
>>747514749lol
>>747514749There's different kinds of incomprehensible and they lead to extremely different effects and produce extremely different reading experiences. There are conversations in Ulysses that discuss and demonstrate this, especially stuff like the Proteus and Oxen of the Sun episodes. Reading gibberish in Farsi will not be the same as reading Esperanto in a Spanish comic book.
>>747515015>There's different kinds of incomprehensible and they lead to extremely different effects and produce extremely different reading experiences.Yup. It's almost like I described this.

It's an amazing game and you should play it, as long as you're ok with the "gameplay" being just walking around and having long conversations with NPCs.
>>747517236Schindler's list was inspired by brutal historical accounts and it still feels like schlock
>>747517064He's right, though. Unlike books, very few VNs are worth reading. The "visual" part is generally more compelling than the "novel".

why didnt yorick just respawn?
>>747518053>he goes into temples/caves and collects treasure.I can't tell if you actually think you made a point, or if you're making a joke about how only an actual retard desperate to argue about nothing would try to paint Crash as some kind of cave spelunking treasure hunter with action movie dialogue.
