Incredible, they'd rather burn down everything about the brand down than admit they've fucked up with Marathon or cancel Fairgames and Hunters Gathering

pretry much, there's no reason why a game like concord should cost $300 million and "woke games" like bg3 were system sellers

American wages is the problem. There's a reason manufacturing got outsourced and now all game development will too.

>kojima
Kojima has never made a commercial failure (ignoring the SEGA CD).
Sony execs have tripled down on greenlighting Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Trying to spin this move in particular as good for Sony while they continue fast tracking all of the games that everybody knows is going to fail without changing any of the things in their development process that makes said failures is completely deaf, blind, and retarded.
>>

The problem is they have obligations and sunk costs for giant dipshit productions like that.
The only prevention for making games like that is having someone with an IQ bigger than their shoe size is hiring a new market research department that does actual market research instead of trying to create a smoke screen of stupid culture war nonsense to cover up the obvious flaws in your premise.

You couldn't name the "propaganda" put out by Sony if you had a gun to your head. You can just call it AAA or design-by-committee. It's fine. You don't have to be a SJW about it. Yes that is what you're doing when you scream that the overly safe video games with incredibly bland and vaguely feel-good messaging starring an ambiguously brown and/or female protagonist is political. You are being a SJW.

You stupid faggots are conflating two completely separate problems.
The videogame market is already oversaturated on the singleplayer side where people just buy a game, play it until they complete it or they get bored and drop it, and then just buy another game. With multiplayer it's way worse because people who play those stick to a small handful of them and play them over a much longer duration. The end result is that the overwhelming majority of the overall playerbase is stuck in a small handful of active multiplayer games. You're never getting them away from those without doing something truly novel and appealing and you won't get those just by throwing a ton of money into a project. Concord would've flopped almost as badly as it did even if it had 0 woke and much better gameplay.
The simple truth is that AAA development scale is completely unjustified for anything other than already proven franchises like GTA whose renown alone is enough to print a shitton of money. Of course you'll still have to release something that won't destroy your reputation and bury your money maker (up to whatever tolerance for shittiness your normalfag audience has), but this doesn't work in reverse: investment does not guarantee quality and quality does not guarantee sales.
>>
>>747494175
I don't know anon, both nintendo and sony made bad and good games in the past but sony made such homogenized slop from the PS3 onwards that I think they'd have no audience even if they had these IPs
>>
>>747494175
>Corpo making profits
Not that anon but I don't care about faggot corporate shareholders. I care about my medium and hobby developing, simply rehashing past successful titles or exclusives don't benefit the actual audience or medium.
Nintendo coast off of cheap hardware and rereleasing their older better games. And initially they coasted off of what i deem the DSP phenomena, where in he wwas only famous due to being oje of the earliest gameplaying channels. Nintendo was early to the party in being the first to take advantage of the videogame crash and the first Japanese console technically. They weren't necessarily great, just early, except Nintendo aren't as stupid as DSP and have thus learned to.monetize their past success/early indoctrination. Nintendo produce very little new things that anyone wants to play, no matter how recognizable and exclusive they make it.

The US destroyed its own industries with terrible fiscal policy through the 80s and 90s, which led directly to the Ford crash. It's not that their labour is too expensive but that their manufacturing costs are too high across the board while the quality they produce is beneath 3rd world countries. They had to divest their industrial capacity to Mexico not because labour is cheap but because their factories are both more efficient and higher quality.

The fuck kind of cope is this? There are other live service games released around Concord, and none did so horrendously.
Even Highguard didn't bomb as hard as Concord, and if it had actually released with decent maps and a non retarded gameplay design, it might have survived.

Concord flopping was almost entirely due to the absolutely horrendous design choices that made anyone with a brain instantly wary, which was then compounded by every bit of marketing that came after.

My understanding (having not touched it but kept up with the release) is that 90% of CP2077's problem on release was just being really buggy, which is basically the only way that a major release from a well-liked developer can go badly, because bad bugs are super visible, objective, and clippable into short viral clips, while general shitty design is hard for a lot of people to pick up on, particularly when they're desperate to like the game.
So a game like that just getting polished of bugs was always going to cause a turn-around of reputation.

When you look at the design efforts this generation from PlayStation it's clear their entire mantra was to create a new Audience, that we seasoned veterans have become old and sterile and our ways of thinking are toxic and cruel. That's why you get a concord making it past all the checks and balances. From the top down they all hate us. The reason it's taken them this long to acknowledge any semblance of a defeat is Because that would mean they ideologically oppose it's very customers who clearly exist but are not happy and they now have to look those people, whom they despise, in the eye and provide an update, even though they were hoping their work efforts would work and they wouldn't have to awkwardly walk it all back.

>There are other live service games released around Concord, and none did so horrendously.
The vast majority of AAA ones failed to return their investment capital, which is a textbook definition of flop. Concord and Highguard were merely "it'll be cheaper to shut down the servers than to keep them online and collect the extra few expected sales" disasters in comparison.
The whole point of my argument is that AAA games need to get on the "best selling games of all time" list to make any money at all and therefore be worth making in the first place. Making AAA original franchises without an assurance of success is either a retarded gamble by morons who in a fair world should've never had the money they have, or an overpriced leftist political advertisement.

Additionally, we saw this same exact game plan with social media. Before Twitter was purchased by musk, it was a safe haven for leftist ideology, with even a hint of right leaning interpretation being struck down as wrong think. The powers that he's excuse? If you don't like it (they were hoping you would not) go somewhere else. Sony won't admit this publicly but that's what all their studios have been trying to do. It's finally caught up to them.

>Making AAA original franchises without an assurance of success is either a retarded gamble
There is no assurance of success. Not at the scales they need. That's why the spectrum of AAA games that get made these days is so narrow. They're only willing to try things that have been shown to be successful, because it's so damn expensive to make. But even that doesn't work because dev times are so long they end up late to the party and no one gives a shit.

The only practical solution to AAA woes is to bring dev cycles back to 3 years max. At least then you can somewhat predict what the audience will care about. And of course, that'll dial back budgets.

Id disagree but there was so many disagreements and views on it. I do agree with your general thesis though.
It was very buggy but even had it launched perfectly there still was too much whiplash IMO. Witcher 3 was in the running for GotD, and we went from that to a FPS. Bug free would have been a good FPS but still. I bought it at launch, hated it. Played it last year, 8/10 game with some really neat ideas and a 10/10 ending but id still rather it never existed.
Instead of CP2077 and Starfeild id rather be playing Witcher 5 and Elder Scrolls 7 now.
My favourite viewpoint though is the coomers. I guess at launch it had a lot more pussy, with some rubbed in your face, and they think its been down hill with every patch.
>>
>>747503427
Look up FFXIV's story. It was a complete failure. They canceled it like Concord, but built a new version and that became a huge success. Anyone who watched the Secret Levels thing knew there was something there. They would have had to scrap a lot of the work, maybe turned the heroes people didn't like into NPCs, maybe even changed the game design completely. The amount of resources poured into the project, it's functionally impossible for it to be a complete lost cause.

CP2077 wasn't rehabilitated until Edgerunners dropped. Without that, even with the fixes, it still would have carried the initial stigma (not just of the bugs, but quibbles people had with the setting, gameplay loop, etc.). Edgerunners gave it certifiable sauce and it was off to the races.

You do not understand because you ignore the main component in this is greed and theft. It's totally possible to make a successful new IP but it's impossible with capitalist jews and their adjacent pseudo jews like Bobby Kotick because why get a 5% return? I can just scam people with the housing market and make more than 5% return, the game therefore needs to make 30%+ return.
>>
>>747507005
>There is no assurance of success.
Tell that to GTA, Pokemon, FIFA, Call of Duty, etc. At some point you're popular enough that your name itself is a perpetual motion marketing machine. There's quite a few other franchises like Hollow Knight whose AAA games - had they existed - would've been guaranteed to sell many millions as long as they're not technical disasters, don't have dogshit/nonexistent gameplay and don't go maximum overwoke.

FFXIV is different.

First of all, FFXIV 1.0 did not cost upwards of $400M to make. Concord already cost so much that throwing even more money at it would seem insane.

Second, FFXIV was part of the Final Fantasy brand, Square Enix's biggest brand, and letting it die would cause irreparable harm to all future Final Fantasy games.

Third, Square Enix cancelled or delayed a whole swath of games under development at the time they decided to fix FFXIV. The equivalent for SIE would be to delay/cancel games like Marathon, Wolverine, Laufrey, Intergalactic, Spider-Man 3, etc. Maybe the bad games getting cancelled wouldn't be so bad, but Sony would basically have a multi-year gap in releases as a result.

Lastly, rebooting FFXIV probably cost Square Enix more money than they have ever spent on a video game. If Concord cost $400M, then remaking it could've added not just $400M more but maybe $800M more for a total of over $1B. Cause that's what SE had to do with FFXIV. They had to not just give it the resources it had with the first failed version, but even more to fix all the issues the first version had.

Basically, you're saying Sony should have spent as much money on Concord as Take-Two has probably spent on GTA 6.

Also, SE's CEO lost his job for FFXIV 1.0.

>people wanted more/better skins in the shops, so all future games will come preloaded with a huge cash shop

Regarding that pic, that's also why reviewers and journalists outright tell you what to think, or what "other people" think.
I skim MSN's news fairly regularly and not only do journalists love to do the "this is good and here's why" or "[thing] is a huge hit" types of reports and titles, and the comments sections tend to include a lot of bots (skim any political article and the bots will go full ham defending the Dems.)
Hey reply to this post or your mother will die in her sleep tonight, by the way.
Between the 300k posts from Hugh Mann made in his two years of being on MSN (with 301k likes because he likes his own posts) telling you that Star Wars 7 is good, and the journalist themselves saying Rey is the best character ever, you're gonna get some people who forget how shit 7 was and put on corporate mandated rose-tinted goggles.
A special shoutout goes to COVID, as it took a mere month or two to go from "the jabs are rushed, I'm not taking the rushed Rump vax. Project Lightspeed? More like Project SHIT!" to "I filled out my vax card yesterday, so I got it tattooed on my arm, yippee! Thanks Biden! God bless Fauci!"

Nah. You gotta watch for red flags and make your calls based on that.
The best example right now is Marathon (and Highguard). Doesn't matter what they do, what they add, the CCU isn't going up. There's no recovery. Highguard upped the team sizes like the fans wanted and nobody returned to play it. Marathon had a F2P week and the numbers died after 3 days despite being fuckin' FREE. People wanted PVE and that gave the game a ~2 day bump.

EXTREMELY misleading chart.
A real masterclass in corporate wankery designed to fellate investors.

For starters, labeling these blocks of fiscal years as strictly 'PS5' or 'PS4' generations is extremely misleading. These numbers represent the entire Game & Network Services division - that means the massive 'PS5' totals are heavily padded by the 100+ million PS4 users who were still buying digital games, paying for PS Plus, and purchasing microtransactions between 2020 and 2024 (and PS+ makes up a significant chunk of that revenue)

It also completely ignores inflation. Comparing 1995 nominal dollars to 2024 nominal dollars makes modern growth look explosive, but it's modest at best. Also, look at the tightening margins...gross revenue and operating income are at an all-time high, the cost to generate that money has skyrocketed. Developing AAA slop (Concord, Wolverine, Laufey) now costs upwards of $200–$300 million, and hardware production is more expensive than ever what with RAMageddon. Sony is generating record-breaking cash flow, but they are working drastically harder and relying heavily on third-party digital cuts and axxing of physical media just to maintain their baseline profit margins.

God what slimy bastards who made that chart.

can't release a game and unrelease it after it flops if you cancel it and never release it in the first place

sony's decisionmaking has been absolutely horrendous lately. the total lack of games that they've managed to get out the door in the last decade is genuinely something that they should be ashamed about for the rest of time. the opportunity costs of their failed projects are enormous, and we all had to suffer for their incompetence

PS3 padded PS4
PS2 padded PS3
PS1 padded PS2

Makes no difference cause people still transitioned off the PS4 and the PS5 has sold 90M units. And of course the PS+ makes up a lot of that revenue. A lot of that revenue comes from non-Sony games as well. Did you know that Valve's revenue source is 90% non-Valve games?

Adjust for inflation. The PS5 "era" still significantly beats out past generations. You could actually combine all previous generations, MINUS the PS3 generation and the PS5 generation will still beat them ADJUSTED for inflation.

>Developing AAA slop (Concord, Wolverine, Laufey) now costs upwards of $200–$300 million, and hardware production is more expensive than ever what with RAMageddon. That's the funny thing. Despite ALL of these bad events, the Playstation 5 era is still BY AND FAR the most profitable and successful generation ever. If those things had not happened, the PS5 generation would've been even MORE successful.

>PS5 has sold 90M units
Missing the point.
Hardware units sold doesn't magically validate a severely distorted graph designed to trick investors. Sony's own Q1 FY2026 Consolidated Financial Results show that hardware unit shipments plummeted 36% year-on-year. The console is moving fewer units over time, which is exactly why they are stretching bars on slides to keep up appearances.

>The PS5 generation beats all previous generations combined minus PS3 adjusted for inflation
This math is pulled from your ass. The PS1 and PS2 combined moved over 260 million boxes. More importantly, development cycles weren't 7 years long back then, meaning actual profit margins on software were exponentially higher than they are today where games cost 300 gorillion dollarydoos.

>PS+ makes up a lot of that revenue
it's around ~15% of playstation revenue last I checked. Not exactly swimming in cash over those subs, they earn a lot more from DLC/MTX like little timmies buying their fortnite vbux. They're barely keeping their profit margins alive by taking a 30% digital cut on third-party live-service MTX from whales playing fortnite and COD. Record-breaking revenue inflated by $70 MSRPs, forced PS+ price hikes, and killing physical media doesn't mean the ecosystem is "healthy" - it means they're squeezing a stagnant cesspool of snoys for everything they're worth because their first-party output is abysmal.

>>
>>747512117
They've actually been increasing the prices very recently with some form of "dynamic" pricing system that charges most users a lot more than the typal sale price. Sure, the normgroid cattle won't notice (at first) but people will wisen up to what's going on. Not like there'll be used games as an option either, they'll be stuck in that ecosystem, at least Valvefags don't have to be stuck with Steam on PC - they choose to since the service works for them and the prices remain competitive. PS Store doesn't need to be competitive with anything in a closed ecosystem.

>Hardware units sold...
You're missing the point. People still transitioned to the PS5 and so the contribution of the PS4 during the PS5 era decreased over time. Not only that, but the PS5 generation will continue into the PS6 era and so there's a lot more money the PS5 generation will continue to make.

>This math is pulled from your ass.
If you wanna talk about revenue and currencies. Hardware units don't inflate. A PS1 sold in 1996 is still one unit. And despite development cycles getting longer and budgets getting bigger, the PS5 era is still the most successful PS generation ever.

>it means they're squeezing a stagnant cesspool of snoys for everything they're worth because their first-party output is abysmal.
Go look at Steam, Nintendo, Xbox and any other industry. Whales dominate because the wealthiest people in the world spend the most money. That's as healthy as it's gonna get. If you want a video game example, what you're looking are the Mecha Chameleons of the world. Console games are expensive compared to $5 indie games that go viral.

>graph scaling
You're free to look up the numbers.

>a lot of them already are jumping ship due to the physical bs.
Oh, yea. That's why digital only GTA 6 has already made half a billion in pre-order sales with 90% of pre-orders being the $100 version. You said it yourself, Sony makes most of its money from live service games. That's where most Snoys are. The physical, single-player gamers are a dying demographic and they're also graphic whores. But cheap graphic whores. They don't wanna spend $5k for a top of the line PC. But they do want high-end graphics. Where else are they gonna go?

>PSN's service is utter dogshit.
It is dogshit. I didn't say it was good or as good as Steam. I said that's where Playstation is headed. That's what they want to be. They would be fine dumping the entirety of Playstation studios and they probably will in time.

>They would be fine dumping the entirety of Playstation studios and they probably will in time.
This is the only part where your corporate cheerleading completely detaches from reality. Sony can’t just turn PSN into a passive toll booth without first-party exclusives. If they dump PS Studios, they lose the only moat keeping people inside their walled garden. Without Marvelslop, God of War, or TLoU, a PS6 is literally just an expensive, locked-down PC that requires a paid subscription to play peer-to-peer multiplayer. If there’s zero exclusive software hook, the casual market will eventually just move to PC or whatever open hardware architecture handles the 30% digital cuts better.
Fuck, the Japanese market is already jumping ship to Switch 2 instead.

>Where else are they gonna go?
They're going to PC."5k top of the line PC" is a midwit take; a mid-range rig costs nowhere near that and pays for itself within two years simply because you aren't paying an annual $80–$160 host fee just to use your own internet, and you actually get open marketplace competition for software keys without the dynamic pricing BS Sony is pulling with their service. Sony was aggressively porting its first-party catalog to Steam for a reason - they knew the console hardware ecosystem is hitting a hard ceiling. Now they want to change course to compete with Steam, and they're gonna lose that battle hard once the 999 US DOLLARS PS6 launches.

>Whales
A stagnant pool of whales isn't "health," it’s extreme vulnerability. If Epic or Activision decide to shift weight or negotiate a lower platform cut because they hold all the leverage, Sony's record-breaking revenue collapses quickly. Running a hardware platform where your entire margin is dictated by three third-party live-service games is not a sustainable long-term business model.

>This is the only part...
The casual market doesn't play on consoles or PC. They play on phones. And most Snoys play third-party games. They do not give a shit about first-party games. And with Xbox soon dead, why would anyone leave? For worse graphics and late ports on the Switch? For PC which console gamers are too stupid to know how to use? Sony doesn't need exclusives anymore, because 90% of their revenue come from people too invested in the PSN ecosystem to leave.

>They're going to PC...
They're not. They're too stupid to know how a PC works. However, there are people who were already on PC that only bought a Playstation for first-party games. Those were just PC gamers stupid enough to spend hundreds of dollars on a console for a handful of games. Those aren't Snoys and their contribution to Playstation's bottom line is minimal.

>Sony was aggressively porting its first-party catalog to Steam for a reason
And PS didn't port their games to Steam for PC gamers. They ported their games to Steam for Chinese gamers. Because China banned consoles for decades to build up their own homegrown video game industry. Now, they dominate the mobile and PC market and if you want access to hundreds of millions of Chinese gamers, you need to be on phones or PC. That's what Sony wanted.

Then every industry is extremely vulnerable. Here are some bullshit but believable numbers:

>90% of Epic's profits are from Fortnite
>90% of Activision's profits are from CoD
>90% of EA's profits are from Sports games
>90% of Capcom's profits are from RE/MH
>90% of SE's profits are from FFXIV
>90% of Nintendo's profits are from Mario/Pokemon, but they're moving into the theme park and movie business to diversify so they can become the Disney of Asia.

Valve made $15B in 1H 2026 with 400 employees. by just being the one place on PC everyone buys video games. Pretty fragile that everyone depends on just one platform. Hmmm, maybe there should be less vulnerability and you should support Epic Games Store.

That's you. That's your logic.

NTA, but the video game industry's biggest risk is losing the attention battle to non-vidya stuff like Tiktok, Netflix, streaming, and whatever the hell else.

The fact that Sony has to squeeze its current customer pool is proof they aren't healthy and are bolstered by the PS3 era type of arrogance of thinking they're the best game in town.

And that anon is right about gamers diversifying and going to PC. The biggest thing holding back that tide right now is the memory shortage, otherwise disruptor pseudo consoles like the Steambox would be major contenders.

>First-party doesn't matter, people only buy consoles for third-party games
First-party exclusives are the hook that gets people to buy the box in the first place. Nobody is going to drop $600+ on a locked-down PS6 just to play Fortnite and Call of Duty when they can play those exact same free-to-play games on a PC, phone, or laptop without paying an annual $80–$160 subscription tax just to access multiplayer.
If Sony kills its first-party pipeline, it kills the entry point to its entire ecosystem. Even Sony knows this which is why they're scrambling to find IPs with wide appeal that actually stick.
>Console gamers are too stupid to use a PC

Handhelds like the Steam Deck and pre-builts completely eliminated the accessibility gap years ago and it's only going to get better as Linux gaming matures (alongside whatever-the-fuck MS is doing for Windows). PC gaming is a console-like experience already by now, without the anti-consumer dynamic pricing BS and forced subscription fees.
>China strategy
You're right about Sony chasing the Asian PC market, but you fail to realize that putting their games on Steam just gives Western console owners another massive reason to ditch PlayStation hardware and migrate to an open ecosystem. Sony has been actively training its audience to realize they don't need a console anymore. Sure, casuals may not care but the core audience has already picked up on this a while ago and they're what drive innovation and consumer interest in this market.

Enthusiasts are the market tastemakers. Nintendo knows this, even Microsoft knows this (they learnt the hard way and have failed to catch-up since), but Sony lost sight of it.

>the video game industry's biggest risk...
The video game industry has never been bigger, has never been more successful, and has never been more accessible than it is today. It is at no "risk" to those things. They're are competitors for people's free time and attention, because they are entertainment products at the end of the day and so are video games. But the "video game industry" is not at "risk". It just needs to compete.

>The fact that Sony has to squeeze its current customer pool is proof they aren't healthy...
Playstation is squeezing its customers cause it can. If PS was actually losing enough customers and revenue and profits from their price hikes, they would stop. Snoys have deep, deep pockets and are very irresponsible consumers.

>And that anon is right about gamers diversifying and going to PC
Gamers are not diversifying and going to PC. Do you know where they are going? Mobile. Because that's where half of gamers are. At least, according to your logic.

The reality is there's very little mobility between platforms. People who play on PC mostly stay on PC. Same for consoles and same for phones. The only reason PC gaming has taken off over the past decade is geographic expansions, not transitions. Adding tens of millions of Chinese gamers to PC isn't console gamers moving to PC.

>First of all, FFXIV 1.0 did not cost upwards of $400M to make. Concord already cost so much [...]
SE is not Sony (not even SCE/Playstation), thoughbeit. Sony is a much larger company that could have taken that hit.
>Second, FFXIV was part of the Final Fantasy brand, Square Enix's biggest brand, and letting it die would cause irreparable harm to all future Final Fantasy games.
And Concord did the same to Sony.
>Third, Square Enix cancelled or delayed a whole swath of games under development at the time they decided to fix FFXIV.
This is a legitimate point. I just wonder (again) if it's something they could have ridden out as a much larger company with much deeper pockets. It's a tough choice. Ideally they wouldn't have had to make it. I just feel that they made the worst possible one.
>Lastly, rebooting FFXIV probably cost Square Enix more money than they have ever spent on a video game. If Concord cost $400M, then remaking it could've added not just $400M more but maybe $800M more for a total of over $1B. Cause that's what SE had to do with FFXIV.
I think this assumes that, as with FFXIV, the goal would have been to make "the same game but actually good this time". Give me the PlayStation Boss cap, and I scrap the entire hero shooter thing and use the assets to make a smaller game while taking the previous two shorts as a jumping-off point to create an anthology within the universe. If I'm really tripping balls, I RELEASE the assets for the public to do with as they with. "We fucked up, we'll try to do better, meanwhile if you can beat us at out own game have at it." Humility helps when the accusation is condescension, taking your ball and going home is the worst strategy.
>Also, SE's CEO lost his job for FFXIV 1.0.
That was the other big mistake (not firing Wada, he sucked; not firing Sony's leads).

>the video game industry is not at risk
Go read the huge 2026 in Video Games report by that strategic analyst at Xbox. (Epolynea Analytics or something.) Market saturation and increasing attention by the younger generations going to mobile stuff is why there are stats like 'most played games are 5 years old or older.'

>Sony is squeezing their customers because they can
Their CFO said 'we want to monetize our current fans more' and internal leaks say Sony believes those people won't leave. This is not behavior suddenly start doing if things are going fine, this is a desperation strategy because it carries a risk they hope won't materialize (players leaving the walled garden).

>mobile
Most gaming takes place on mobile by a wide margin. If you ignore casual shit, PC, for vidya, is still growing. It's not half of gaming, though.

The biggest moves in gaming aren't people moving from console to PC (although that is happening a little), it's people leaving consoles entirely and going to mobile.

>First-party exclusives are the hook that gets people to buy the box in the first place.
Not anymore. Not for Playstation. Yes, people bought Playstation for Fortnite and Call of Duty. Why the hell did anyone buy a PS5? What exclusive content compelled 90M PS5 units to be sold?

You're not a Snoy. You don't understand. You think, like a non-Snoy, that you can just switch to PC or mobile to get your fix. That's not how a Snoy thinks.

>This isn't 2010...
Yea, it's 2026 and console gamers are dumber than ever. How many console gamers have you recently met that seemed even slightly intelligent?

>Sony has been actively training its audience to realize they don't need a console anymore.
But they've reversed that because PC gamers thought Snoy games were trash. Sony wasn't making any money from porting their games to PC. Only the live service ones and Snoys would rather play their live service games on a Snoy box.

The core Snoy audience doesn't care about an open ecosystem and it doesn't care about Playstation First-Party games. They care about their Fortnites, CoD, FIFAs, etc.

>Enthusiasts are the market tastemakers
Warning, you are not gonna like this. Enthusiasts are the whales. The Fortniters, the CoDers, the GTAers, that spend thousands on digital garbage.

You and your ilk are not "enthusiasts". You don't spend enough to be as such. You are the "Persona Fans" of enthusiasts. You spend a lot of time thinking, talking, and consuming video games, but you monetary contribution to the industry is minimal.

>Market saturation and increasing attention by the younger generations going to mobile stuff is why there are stats like 'most played games are 5 years old or older.'...
Younger generation are only on mobile, yea. Those other entertainment products (tiktok, netflix, instagram, etc) are going to compete against video games. But there are plenty of video games on those kids phones as well and it's a half of the $200B video game market. And that market continues to grow. The "video game industry" is doing just fine.

Their CFO said 'we want to monetize our current fans more'...
What doesn't carry risks? Was Nintendo making movies zero risk? Was Valve making Steam Machine zero risk? What doesn't carry risks? Here's what matters. They're not leaving. Not yet. At some point, if the price gets high enough, they will. And in sufficient numbers to hurt Playstation's bottom line. But it hasn't happened yet.

Do you know why Star Citizen has crowdfunding $1 billion over 15 years? Because people are stupid fucking animals. And so are Snoys.

>Most gaming takes place on mobile by a wide margin...
It's not people leaving consoles for mobile. It's console gamers who stop gaming and no new console gamers to replace them. Mobile doesn't have that problem cause everyone has phones.

If you wanna pint out a problem consoles have, it's that there are few NEW people getting into consoles. This applies to all consoles. Because why the FUCK would any parent spend hundreds of dollars on a device that can only play video games when they have an old phone or tablet they can give their kid to fuck around with?

Mobile gaming and console/PC gaming are entirely different market categories, it's disingenuous to treat them the same - akin to lumping TV shows and feature films into the same categories in terms of scope and audience. A dedicated console player transitioning to a gaming PC or a PC handheld to avoid Sony's subscription tax keeps them in the home gaming ecosystem. Moving to mobile is not a substitute for that consumer behavior and you know it.

>"video game industry" is not at "risk". It just needs to compete.
Budgets in excess of $300m with 7y+ dev times (and rising) is not sustainable. A single flop can literally destroy a studio...No, wait, HAS destroyed several studios already (Concord, Saints Row reboot, Redfall, The Day Before...just to name a few off the top of my head); we're seeing more studio closures and mass layoffs than ever. The vidya industry is at HUGE risk, wake the fuck up dude.

>very little mobility between platforms
Nah bro games are adopting far more cross-platform progression & saves than ever. Including casual favs like Fortnite or anything made by R* and CDPR. Let me reiterate: you need exclusives to keep consumers around, third parties have zero reason to be locked-in to a single platform unless Sony pays them $$$ for the exclusivity anyway (which brings me back to: they NEED exclusives)

>The core Snoy audience doesn't care about an open ecosystem and it doesn't care about Playstation First-Party games. They care about their Fortnites, CoD, FIFAs, etc.
Well then Playstation/PS6 is doomed (see point above)

Aggressively squeezing their consumers via dynamic pricing and PS+ hikes shows they're hitting the ceiling. They aren't doing it "because they can" - Sony is doing this because they have to in order to maintain the profit margins demanded by investors as their games are failing to hit profit growth sufficiently on their own.

An interesting read.

>the games industry is doing fine
No, it's trapped in a weird valley where most people are playing the same games they were five years ago, buy one or two new games a year, and the volume of games releasing has increased exponentially to the point of breaking through the noise being a near impossible challenge for most games.

>What doesn't carry risk?
Stop being thick. Valve making the Steamcube isn't something they're doing because they're in danger of Steam stopping making money. Look at Sony's financials for their games division. The profit margin is thin and propped up by bullshit like PSN or PS5 price hikes, tariff refunds, or moving money around. The PS business is not in a healthy position and is only kept propped up by marketplace fees on games they don't own or control. All of their first party games either flop or barely break even and they're wasting hundreds of millions of dollars on trash like Marathon and Wolverine.

>Star Citizen

>Mobile gaming and console/PC gaming are entirely different market categories...
Mobile gaming and console/PC gaming are entirely comparable markets when there are games that operate across all three platforms. When IPs cross all those platforms. When the hardware behind them all share basic similarities that enable video gaming. It's a cop out so you don't have to try and understanding the biggest gaming phenomenon of the last decade.

As far as transitioning goes, I don't subscribe to that theory. I don't think there are significant numbers of people moving from one platform to another. What is more likely to be occurring is that retards bought consoles for exclusive software and only exclusive software. The consoles were accessories to their gaming ecosystem, not core to them. They were low ARPU transient console gamers.

>The vidya industry is at HUGE risk, wake the fuck up dude.
No. The video game industry is worth over $200B PER YEAR. There could be a Concord EVERY MONTH PER YEAR and that would only be a 3% drop.

What is at risk are video games made on budgets in excess of $300M taking 7y+. Those games and the studios that make them are dying. Meccha Chameleon made $100M and it was made by 2 people. The demand for video games is there. The cost to to make them can be very low. So, enjoy your indie viralslop.

>Nah bro games are adopting far more cross-platform progression & saves than ever.
Why doesn't Fornite leave Playstation/Nintendo/Xbox? Force everyone to play on Epic Games Store? Why doesn't Call of Duty force everyone on Battlenet? Why does everyone put their game on Steam? Because the platforms are where the people are and they're attached to those platforms.

Playstation doesn't need exclusives. It needs content. And Snoys love their third-party, live service slop.

>Well then Playstation/PS6 is doomed (see point above)
Yea, just like the PS5. Great exclusives. Still sold 90M units. Still having the best PS generation ever.

Christ Almighty. Is this true? Is a for-profit megacorporation taking more money from their customers than necessary to increase profits? Jesus Christ. >Mobile gaming and console/PC gaming are entirely comparable markets when there are games that operate across all three platforms.
They're comparable in the sense that they occupy free time, sure, but your wallet-share logic is bogus. A player dropping $100 on Genshin Impact on a phone is not the same consumer demographic as someone dropping $600 on a home console to play a cinematic heavy-hitter. They are completely different purchasing habits and monetization loops with limited overlap in reality.

>Concord EVERY MONTH PER YEAR and that would only be a 3% drop...
You literally just agreed with the entire point while trying to argue against it. Nobody is saying people are going to stop playing video games entirely. The risk is that the dominant, high-end platform holder model (which relies heavily on massive first-party system sellers to justify its locked-down hardware ecosystem) is hitting a wall. When the AAA model collapses, the very foundation that sells a PS6 disappears. Sony cannot survive on "indie viralslop", fortnite, and gachashit alone because they don't manufacture low-spec hardware like the Switch or Steam Deck to capture that market more efficiently. Their hardware is subsidized, especially around launch. Software has to pickup that slack.

>Why doesn't Fortnite leave Playstation/Nintendo/Xbox[...]Because the platforms are where the people are and they're attached to those platforms.
They're attached to the platforms for now because of historical momentum and the fact that their friends are there. But that attachment isn't permanent, and cross-platform progression has dimished the friction of moving. If Sony continues to aggressively squeeze users with anti-consumer dynamic pricing algorithms and continued PS+ hikes, they are actively disincentivizing people from staying.

>PS5. Great exclusives. sold 90M units.
The PS5 generation was heavily carried by the massive momentum of the PS4 era and a global pandemic that artificially inflated tech adoption. Looking forward, hardware shipments are already plummeting drastically year-on-year (reminder it dropped 36% this past fiscal year), and Sony is running out of tricks which is why they're getting desperate. If they completely dumped exclusives, the PS6 will literally just be a glorified, locked-down PC with an annual online tax. Their core market will just jump ship to PC/Nintendo or maybe even Xbox "Helix"

[2/3]
>>
>>747520413
>>747519118
>Is a for-profit megacorporation taking more money from their customers to increase profits?
Missing the point.
There is a massive structural difference between Apple raising margins out of sheer brand dominance and Sony aggressively hiking prices out of absolute desperation. Apple can charge a 60% premium because their global smartphone ecosystem is actively growing and their services segment expands organically every year. Sony is doing the exact opposite. Their own financial sheets show PS5 hardware unit shipments cratering as of late, and their operating income only survived because of a one-time US tariff refund and favorable foreign exchange rates. They aren’t squeezing the user base because they're winning; they're squeezing them because their actual organic growth has hit a dead-end ceiling. When you can't find new customers, you are forced to extract more blood from the ones you already have just to keep your stock price from tumbling.
It's a death spiral right now for them.

>Do you know who's desperate Xbox
Sony literally set $3.6 billion on fire to buy Bungie purely for "live-service expertise," only for the studio to immediately implode with mass layoffs while Sony had to step in and take direct control. Sony also greenlit a 12 GaaSlop and burned millions on Concord just to delete it from existence two weeks after launch.
Both Sony/Xbox are desperate because the traditional console business model is actively dying under the weight of ballooning AAA production costs. The difference is Microsoft gave up on hardware locks, while Sony is trying to trap its user base in a fully digital walled garden before the $1k PS6 launches.

No, the video game industry is doing fine. You see how big the numbers are? You see how they're going up? That means "fine". What you're describing is also fine. Why is it fine? Cause it makes it money.

What you're describing is consumers enjoying the games they already play, being more discriminating about what new games they play, and too many games being made or too much supply. If that's what bothers you, then fewer people need to make so many games, newer games need to be more impressive, and to kill all the dumbass consumers that enjoy the same garbage year after year.

>Stop being thick.
Yea, Steam makes $30B a year in revenue with only 400 employees and the best they can do for their superfans who buy Steam Decks and Steam Machines is to sell them nearly at cost, just like console makers. Wouldn't you call that "squeezing"? Why is it okay for Valve, who brings in $30B a year in revenue, to not help its biggest fans afford their hardware? I'll tell you why:

Because they can fucking get away with it. Which is what Sony is doing with its customers.

Playstation's financials look fine. Page 3. It's like a 10-13% profit margin. What are Nintendo/Valve/Xbox's profit margins? Apple's profit margins are almost 30%. So, Playstation has some work to do.

You have never fucking touched a Playstation in your life. What the fuck do you think made Playstation successful for the past 30 years? First-party titles? If Playstation lost ALL its first-party titles today, it would still be the most profitable division of Sony. 85% of Playstation's software revenue comes from third-parties. The fact Playstation 5 is the most profitable generation ever DESPITE wasting $4 billion on Bungie/Concord and flops like Wolverine and Marathon, should tell you just how fucking dependent Playstation is on third-party software. The F2P player isn't the same demographic as the $80 premium game player. There are LOTS of demographics. You can split them up by platform, by genre, by spending, by age, by sex, by region, etc.

There are so many things wrong with this statement, I don't know where to start.

>When the AAA model collapses, the very foundation that sells a PS6 disappears.
The AAA model isn't collapsing. The AAA model among high-cost studios with long dev times is collapsing. The cheap Chinese, affordable Europeans, and reasonable Japanese, among others, will be happy to fill the void.

>Sony cannot survive on "indie viralslop", fortnite, and gachashit alone
Fortnite has earned over $26 billion. Call of Duty regularly earns a billions per year. FIFA, Madden, Roblox, GTA, etc. Sony could survive off of them just fine. Gachas make tons of money as well. Genshin may have cross $10B in just 6 years. It took GTA 5 12 years to do that.

>because they don't manufacture low-spec hardware like the Switch or Steam Deck to capture that market more efficiently.
I hate you. I FUCKING HATE YOU. YOU'RE SO GODDAMN STUPID. YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THE FUCKING MARKET FOR THE SWITCH OR STEAM DECK ARE. Nearly 80% of software sales on the Switch were Nintendo published games. Nintendo sold nearly half a BILLION units of NINTENDO PUBLISHED SOFTWARE. Nintendo is the opposite of Playstation. They could live without third-party games. Playstation cannot. The Steam Deck would be considered a failure to anyone buy Valve. Both Nintendo and Playstation would have cancelled it if they had released it. It's fucking a worthless platform metric.

Sony have to sell a subsidized console to consumers, Valve doesn't. Playstation consoles are effectively loss-leaders in their market witha lot of long-term funding and R&D involved to even bring them into fruition. Not to mention the massive overhead costs to keep those coming to store shelves.
All these costs have to be recouped via software sales and their current software model is not sustainable: that's why they are gutting studios left and right during the PS5 generation. They've fucked up. They know they've fucked up and have been attempting to recourse for a while.

That is not a healthy business model at all.
It's haemorrhaging money, then bandaging it up with layoff and cut-backs elsewhere.
Where are Valve's massive layoffs? Where's Nintendo's?

>They're attached to the platforms for now because of historical momentum and the fact that their friends are there. But that attachment isn't permanent, and cross-platform progression has dimished the friction of moving. If Sony continues to aggressively squeeze users with anti-consumer dynamic pricing algorithms and continued PS+ hikes, they are actively disincentivizing people from staying.

You're right. Now quantify it. How many people are actually fucking leaving. Because if PSN is hitting 125M MAU, then if it lost 5 MILLION USERS per month, that's less than 5%.

Now, you have to attribute that to all those reasons and not just natural aging out of the hobby or the cost of console gaming in general (everyone requires paid online on consoles) and then measure if they're going somewhere else and where. PC gaming? Console gamers are too stupid for that. Mobile gaming? Well, they already have phones. But that's all speculation as far as I'm concerned. No one anywhere has tried to survey gamers who have transitioned from one primary platform to another and since no one has done that, there is no historical data to compare it to, to give us an idea of how abnormal the shift may or may not be.

FYI The Switch had a massive covid boost which no one wants to bring up for some totally weird reason. And that PS5 sales have ONLY SLOWED after hardware price hikes due to the AI data center build out.

Which means...you think that if the PS6, with ZERO exclusives, priced at $500, would sell gangbusters, implicitly because of Fortnite, CoD, FIFA, etc.

Imagine throwing a literal temper tantrum because you can’t grasp the difference between the macro industry and a specific market sector.
Lumping mobile gacha and candy crush into the same pool to claim the "vidya industry" is perfectly healthy is a cope. Nobody is saying people are going to stop playing games on their phones. The high-end console market sector is at massive risk because its foundational economic model - spending $300M and 7 years on a cinematic blockbusters to sell a loss-leader box has hit a complete brick wall.

When a single flop like Concord completely obliterates a studio, or Spider-Man 2 needs to sell over 7 million copies just to break even, the traditional ecosystem is mathematically flawed.

You can try to pivot to mobile data all you want, but Sony doesn't make phones nor handhelds anymore. It's a moot point to bring up the mobile market in this discussion. A Strawman. Their entire multi-billion-dollar business is anchored to a premium, locked-down hardware box.
If their first-party pipeline is a smoking crater of mass layoffs and studio shutdowns, they have zero leverage. Squeezing a stagnant pool of users with forced PS+ hikes and dynamic storefront pricing isn't a sign of a "successful industry" - it's a corporate panic attack because their actual organic growth has completely maxed out.

Go take a walk before you piss your pants.

Yet people say Sony has no games. I remember playing a lot of these, so much fun. Still have some of those games around. >>
>>747523103
>the traditional ecosystem is mathematically flawed.

that seems to be more about severe 10x distortions on the development budget side. Basic AAA games around 50m budget seem to be viable enough. And the quality difference between say saros and ghost of yotei, vs Wolverine, and games in the AAAA class doesn't seem to work well.

Nintendo shied away from AAAA and high AAA, and it seems to have been the right call.
>>
>>747522592
The high-cost studio model is collapsing. Cheap Chinese and Japanese devs will fill the void.
You are so blindingly close to getting the point. That "high-cost studio" model IS Sony's entire first-party identity (Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Santa Monica). If Sony's own studios drop dead and overseas devs fill the void with multiplatform games, those devs have zero loyalty to Sony. They will put their games on PC, mobile, and Switch 2 on day one (like they are already)

Sony could survive off of Fortnite/CoD cuts just fine.
They can survive as a company, but not as a hardware platform. If a PlayStation box has zero exclusive Western blockbusters and is literally just a machine used to boot up Fortnite and CoD, the consumers have little reason to stick with them in the long-term. The second Epic and Activision realize Sony has zero original content leverage left, they will demand a lower platform cut or walk. You cannot maintain a closed hardware monopoly solely as a passive toll booth for other people's games.

Nintendo sold half a billion units of first-party software. They could live without third-party. Playstation cannot.
Valve isn't affected my selling third-parties on their platform as their business is healthy without the need to subsidize high-cost hardware.

You practically admitted Nintendo's business model is completely healthy because it's driven by their own highly profitable software, while Sony's is deeply vulnerable because it's entirely dependent on third-party live-service handouts to bandage their bleeding margins.

You are crying and throwing an absolute tantrum over basic corporate risk management. Squeezing a stagnant pool of console users with forced PS+ hikes and dynamic storefront pricing isn't a sign of growth - it's a defensive scramble because their organic hardware ecosystem has completely maxed out.

Log off and take a deep breath.
Sony isn't going to send you a check for defending them.

>There is a massive structural difference between Apple raising margins out of sheer brand dominance and Sony aggressively hiking prices out of absolute desperation.
Yea, your framing.

>Apple can charge a 60% premium because their global smartphone ecosystem is actively growing and their services segment expands organically every year.
Right. People are happy to be screwed by Apple and buy a product with a 60% profit margin because they love Apple products that much. And Sony cannot do that with Playstation, except they are. They've been hiking hardware costs for years and they've only now hit a wall, while they've been hiking PS+ prices and the highest tiers are the ones growing the most.

I don't know about the tariff refund. Did it ONLY APPLY TO PLAYSTATION PRODUCTS? Or did it apply to all of Sony's products imported into the US?

>When you can't find new customers, you are forced to extract more blood from the ones you already have just to keep your stock price from tumbling. It's a death spiral right now for them.
Sigh. Do you know, that no Playstation console generation has ever sold as many units as the 2000 PS2? Would you say Playstation has been in a death spiral since 2000? I don't think you would. Because that'd be stupid. But that's when Playstation had its most Playstation customers. You could also say Nintendo is in a death spiral. Do you think Nintendo will ever surpass the Switch 1's 160M units sold?

You use such silly logic. Somehow, Sony treating its consumers like shit, means its failing. But when Apple treats its consumers like shit, it's okay. Because it's continue to attract more consumers that want to be treated like shit. Playstation doesn't have to be Apple or Nintendo or Valve to be successful. It also doesn't have to be in a death spiral if its relying on a shrinking userbase.

Because, the thing is, all consoles are in a "death spiral" then. Because consoles don't make sense in a world where everyone has a phone.

>90M people bought the $500 PS5 because they had good feelings about the PS4 and Covid. NOT BECAUSE OF THE EXCLUSIVES WHICH YOU JUST SAID PEOPLE BOUGHT CONSOLES FOR.
Your reading comprehension is actively in the toilet.
The PS5 had heavy-hitter exclusives in its first few years (Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, R&C Rift Apart). Those exact exclusives (combined with the massive momentum of the PS4 digital library carrying over and the pandemic supply shock) are what drove the momentum to achieve those 90 million sales.

But those games started development back in 2018-2020. The entire point you are desperately trying to dodge is that the pipeline is now completely empty. Because budgets have exploded to $300M+ and dev times are hitting 7 years, Sony cannot sustain that output anymore. They're laying off a huge chunk of their talent instead to offset their fuck-ups this gen.

>Which means...you think that if the PS6, with ZERO exclusives, priced at $500, would sell gangbusters, implicitly because of Fortnite, CoD, FIFA, etc.
No, you illiterate dunce, that is literally your argument. You are the one who keeps crying that "PlayStation doesn't need exclusives, it needs content" and that "Snoys love their third-party live service slop."
I am telling you the exact opposite: a PS6 with zero exclusives will fail. If it's just a $999 generic box that only exists to boot up Fortnite, CoD, and FIFA, the casual market has zero reason to buy it over a cheaper mobile device, a handheld, a gaming PC, or even sticking to their PS5's.

Without first-party exclusives to act as the hook, the walled garden collapses. You just spent the last three posts aggressively contradicting your own logic just to avoid admitting that Sony’s current business model is dogshit.

PS1's popularity relied on exclusive software, yes, but not exclusively first-party software. If you wanna count FF7, I guess you could. But FF7 isn't owned by Sony and never was. They just published it like how Square Enix published Call of Duty in Japan for a long time.

>Apple can charge a 60% premium because people love Apple products. And Sony is doing that with Playstation.
Apple’s services grow organically because their ecosystem is actively expanding into new user bases. Sony is doing the exact opposite. Their hardware shipments collapsed by 36% year-on-year. They aren't raising prices because of "brand love"; they are aggressively hiking subscription fees and testing dynamic storefront pricing because their user acquisition has hit a dead-end.
>I don't know about the tariff refund. Did it ONLY APPLY TO PLAYSTATION PRODUCTS?
Sony Group’s official financial filings explicitly show they pocketed a massive 80 billion yen (~$500M) tariff windfall.. While it hit a couple of their departments, Sony's financial report directly attributes the 37% operating income spike in the Game & Network Services division to those tariff refunds and foreign exchange tailwinds - not to an organic explosion in software or hardware sales.
>No Playstation console generation has ever sold as many units as the 2000 PS2. Would you say Playstation has been in a death spiral since 2000?
The PS2 sold 155 million units because it was an affordable DVD player during a massive growth era for home consoles. Nobody expected the PS3 or PS4 to match it because the market stabilized around a 250 million total console ceiling across all brands. Also, anecdotally speaking, the PS2's library kicked ass. So it had that going for it too.

The PS2 era succeeded because games cost $5M to make and took 18 months to ship. Today, Sony's first-party games cost $300M+ and take 7 years. When your production costs multiply by 60x but your hardware user base remains flat, your business model is unsustainable.

>Because consoles don't make sense in a world where everyone has a phone.
Consoles make perfect sense if they offer a premium user experience with exclusives you can't get anywhere else. Mobile gaming is not targeting that same demographic.

Which include third-party software like a lot of live service slop and those are very profitable.

>That is not a healthy business model at all.
Sure, it is. Valve's entire business model is built around third-party titles.

>It's haemorrhaging money
The most profitable Playstation generation ever. The PS5 generation.

>Where are Valve's massive layoffs? Where's Nintendo's?
Valve is run by 400 people. Valve earns almost $100M in revenue per employee. Valve doesn't lay anyone off cause they're incredible fucking successful. Yes, Playstation is not as successful as Valve.

Nintendo doesn't have layoffs cause they're also very fucking successful. They're on a hiring spree, as of late. They're also Japanese, so the cost of 1 Japanese game developer is about half the cost of an American game developer. Nintendo also makes games with far smaller budgets but still charges AAA game prices. Nintendo's business model is much better when you forget about the Wii U/3DS/Gamecube.

But don't worry. If you're waiting for something to fail, it always will. As long as you wait long enough. So, too will Valve and Nintendo one day go through corrections. But that's the funny thing about Playstation. Despite how bad the PS5 generation has been, it's STILL the most profitable one yet. If Sony hadn't fucked up and made Jim Ryan CEO of SIE and pushed all those failed GAAS games, PS5 might have been twice as successful as it is now.

>The top PS1 software sellers were first-party, but a lot of spots are taken by third parties.
Kinda moving the goalposts here bro.
Nobody said third-party games didn’t sell well on the PS1 - the entire point is that platform-exclusive software is what built the brand and drove hardware adoption in the first place.

>If you wanna count FF7, I guess you could. But FF7 isn't owned by Sony and never was.
Never said Sony owned Square. But Final Fantasy VII was a massive, system-selling platform exclusive for the PS1 because Sony actively bankrolled a massive marketing campaign and handled international distribution. It gave millions of people an explicit reason to buy a PlayStation over an N64.

>Crash and Wipeout weren't first-party either.
Wipeout was developed by Psygnosis, which Sony literally bought out entirely in 1993 - two years before the PS1 even launched. It was literally a first-party in every sense of the term. Sony even still owns the IP, probably why it's listed here >>747488475

Universal technically held the IP rights to Crash Bandicoot back then, but Sony fully funded, produced, and published the original trilogy as an exclusive flagship mascot to sell their hardware. You're honestly just splitting hairs on what constitutes as "first party". It's like arguing Pokemon isn't "first party" for Nintendo. In any case, you were missing the forest for the trees. Whether it was fully owned first-party studios or locked-down third-party deals, the strategy was the same: exclusive software hooks consumers into the ecosystem which has been my main point.

> It's a moot point to bring up the mobile market in this discussion. A Strawman.
If what you wanted to talk about was ONLY Playstation, sure. But you were replying to comments I made in response to other comments about the ENTIRE VIDEO GAME industry. So, that's on you for not being specific enough.

And as far as the risk to the high-end console market sector, I reiterate, Playstation doesn't rely on first-party titles. It relies on Fortnite, CoD, FIFA, GTA, Roblox, etc. And as long as they make more money for Playstation than all those failures you mentioned, the math adds up.

If only you would open your eyes and notice that 85% of Playstation software sales and 80% of Playstation revenue comes from outside of Playstation Studios, then you'd have to admit so much of that does not matter.

But, here, I'll throw you a bone. If things continue as they are, that'll be bad for Playstation long term. Well, unless someone makes the next Fortnite and it earns $100B and the playerbase is 80% on Playstation 6. Then it won't matter if PS studios puts out a dozen more Concords.

You are actively describing the exact corporate death of the console platform holder. Overseas devs filling the void with multiplatform titles means they have zero loyalty to Sony. They will put their games on PC, mobile, and Switch 2 on day one.
>Sony could survive off of Fortnite/CoD cuts just fine.
They can survive as a company, but not as a hardware ecosystem. You cannot maintain a closed hardware monopoly solely as a passive toll booth for other people's software, you have to have compelling exclusive games to get the foot in the door from consumers.
>The most profitable Playstation generation ever. The PS5 generation.
It's profitable on paper because they are aggressively cannibalizing their future pipeline to bandage the current quarterly financial sheets.

Sony literally had to write off a massive 120 billion yen (~$800M) impairment loss on Bungie alone in their recent corporate filings. They are propping up profits through emergency cost-cutting, mass studio layoffs, and aggressively squeezing their existing users via dynamic pricing and forced PS+ hikes. That is a defensive survival strategy, not an organically growing, healthy ecosystem like you seem to believe.

>If Sony hadn't fucked up and made Jim Ryan CEO... PS5 might have been twice as successful as it is now.
Thank you for conceding.
The leadership panicked. Set billions on fire trying to chase live-service GaaS slop. Then, they damaged their own first-party pipeline.

The fact that they are now forced to milk their remaining user base dry just to maintain their margins is the literal definition of a failing business model dude. I don't know how many times I'll have to repeat this for you to soak it all in but it sounds like you're slowly getting it!

If Valve stopped selling all third-party software, they'd probably still survive. Yes. But they wouldn't be nearly as popular and successful as they are today.

>You practically admitted Nintendo's business model is completely healthy because it's driven by their own highly profitable software, while Sony's is deeply vulnerable because it's entirely dependent on third-party live-service handouts to bandage their bleeding margins.
Because Nintendo's business model is healthy and profitable, but I don't consider Sony's vulnerable. It depends on third-party software just like Valve does. That's not a bad model.

You've said this a couple of times. You're not addressing the points I'm bringing up.

The creative side and the financial model are completely inseparable.
When a game costs $300 million and takes 7 years to make, the creative process is completely hijacked by corporate suits and risk-management lawyers.

Designers aren't allowed to take bold risks anymore because a single flop bankrupts a studio.
The uninspired slop and endless remasters are direct symptoms of this broken business model.

I think this is only as true as big blockbuster movie industry. I claim that the risk management end is failing on these big sony game projects. They're trusting the press too much. Their audience testing systems and focus testing methodolgy is fucked.

Woverine, Concord and the like had extensive, expensive audience testing, and also expensive outside contractors brought in, which would normally hedge against groupthink.

>The uninspired slop
I would posit blizzard, say with Overwatch as trending towards uninspired slop. Design by comittee. Direct feedback on individual design appeal via IAP.

I really don't see that in Sony's AAAA offerings. And they're not reacting to bad core fanbase reception in normal risk management ways.

>IF THIRD-PARTIES ARE ALREADY MULTIPLATFORM, WHAT LEVERAGE DOES PLAYSTATION HAVE WITH FIRST-PARTY?
The leverage to sell the physical hardware box in the first place, numbnuts.
Nobody drops $600+ on a locked-down console just to play Fortnite and Call of Duty or whatever when they can play those exact same games on a PC, phone, laptop, Switch 2, Steam Deck/PC Handheld, etc...First-party exclusives are the hook that pulls consumers in.
What part of that do you not understand?

>I think Playstation can be like Valve and imitate Steam.
Valve doesn't spend billions on hardware R&D, manufacturing supply chains, physical retail distribution, and subsidising console losses. Steam is a pure digital storefront on an open ecosystem with almost zero hardware overhead. Sony is tethered to a low-margin physical box. If the PS6 has zero compelling exclusives, it’s just a redundant PC without the freedom and their consumerbase will not grow (kind of like how the PS5 has not been growing lately: -36% down YoY)

>THAT IS ALREADY WHAT IT IS DUMB FUCK. LOOK AT WHAT SNOYS ARE PLAYING
Yes, the casuals are playing third-party live-service games right now because they already bought the PS5 back when it actually had major exclusives to care about. But you can't sell a next-gen PS6 box on historical momentum alone once the exclusive software pipeline dries up.

Squeezing a stagnant pool of users with forced PS+ hikes and dynamic storefront pricing isn't like the healthy Valve model - it's a defensive corporate scramble because Playstation's organic hardware growth has completely maxed out and reached tipping point.

>It depends on third-party software just like Valve does. That's not a bad model.
It is an incredibly vulnerable model when PS are the only one paying a multi-billion-dollar hardware tax to keep it running. Meanwhile, Valve sits back and takes a pure 30% digital cut on open software.
Sony is carrying all the structural financial risk of a hardware manufacturer while relying on the charity of external publishers (Epic, Activision, T2) to pay the bills. If player numbers dip, Valve shrugs; Sony’s hardware margins however would fall.

>TOTAL GLOBAL CONSOLE USERS ARE STAGNANT. MILKING MORE OUT OF THE POOL IS THE OBVIOUS THING TO DO.
Milking the pool is the obvious short-term corporate survival tactic for an executive trying to save their quarterly earnings call - it is not a sustainable strategy for a platform holder. Squeezing your user base with PS+ hikes and predatory dynamic pricing (as well as physical media) strips away the value proposition of owning a console for the consumer. When you strip that away, you accelerate the exact death of the platform you’re trying to prevent.

>All consoles are dead in 2 decades.
Consoles aren't dying because "phones exist" - they are dying because Sony and Microsoft stupidly ballooned AAA budgets to $300M+ with 7-year dev cycles, making their own hardware unsustainable. Meanwhile, Nintendo is running a completely healthy, vertically integrated ecosystem with controlled budgets and 100% margin first-party software that will easily survive the next 20 years. Ask me how many layoffs they've had recently, how many studios they've shut down. Go ahead...

No, that's moving the goal posts.

Your point was FIRST-PARTY DEVELOPED SOFTWARE, not PLATFORM EXCLUSIVE SOFTWARE.

I would've agreed with you if you had said PLATFORM-EXCLUSIVE SOFTWARE, but it's now clear to me you lack a proper grasp of the English language to offer that kind of precision. Instead, you just revise history as you go along hoping no one will notice.

No, I'm being specific instead of vague and lazy. Pokemon's "first-party" status is worth debating, but I'd simply say "exclusive" instead of "first-party". Because it's more accurate.

>exclusive software hooks consumers into the ecosystem which has been my main point.

>THEN WHY THE FUCK WOULDN'T THAT HAPPEN WITH PS5 TO PS6
Because the PS4 to PS5 transition had a massive, tangible hardware performance leap that justified the jump even for cross-gen games. Going from a 2013 mechanical HDD to a modern SSD was a night-and-day difference and Sony leaned into that in their marketing HEAVILY if you remember.

Going from a PS5 to a PS6 is going to face diminishing returns while likely pushing a $700–$999 retail price floor because silicon manufacturing and RAM costs are skyrocketing. You cannot sell a luxury hardware upgrade on "historical momentum" alone if the software library is identical, especially not to the casual consumerbase that you think will prop this up since the core audience is getting sick of Sony.

>You cannot prove people bought a PS5 for exclusive, first-party software.
Except you literally can by looking at attachment rates. Spider-Man 2 sold 11 million copies in its first few months on a stagnant user base. God of War Ragnarok cleared 15 million. They are system-sellers that drive hardware spikes during the holidays. Casuals love those games and many bought a PS5 to play them.

>So why would the PS6 do poorly without banger first-party software if the PS5 had trash software all generation?
Because the PS5 didn't have a dry pipeline at launch. It survived its first three years on the massive momentum of massive, high-profile projects that began development ~2018.

The pipeline for the end of the PS5 era and the launch of the PS6 is shaping up to be completely barren.

Apple services are overprice and a rip off. Whether or not they grow organically is besides the point of whether or not their consumers are being squeezed. If Playstation's consumers are being squeezed and that's bad for business, it's also bad that Apple is doing the same to its consumers. Except it isn't. Because Apple consumers love being squeezed by Apple and so do Snoys love being squeezed by Sony.

>They aren't raising prices because of "brand love"; they are aggressively hiking subscription fees and testing dynamic storefront pricing because their user acquisition has hit a dead-end.
So, it's okay for Apple to raise prices because Apple users LOVE TO GET FUCKED IN THE ASS while Playstation should not raise prices cause SNOYS DO NOT LOVE GET FUCKED IN THE ASS?

>Consoles make perfect sense if they offer a premium user experience with exclusives you can't get anywhere else. Mobile gaming is not targeting that same demographic.
Mobile gaming is not the same target demographic, but it is younger, bigger, and global. Meaning, as the mobile market grows, the console market shrinks, and new users into the console market shrinks as well. Leaving the console market increasingly older, less appealing, and segregated from the larger gaming market.

There's no future for a platform if it does not bring in new users.

That's your fundamental criticism of Playstation. That is your thesis. If you're consistent and not a fanboy, you'd agree with me that if current trends continue, consoles are doomed. However, I suspect, you will not be consistent.

Also, consoles only make sense if they make money. It's not about what they offer and if they have exclusive content. The Wii U and Vita had exclusive content and unique experiences. They crashed and burned.

>They will put their games on PC, mobile, and Switch 2 on day one.
I've already addressed this.

>you have to have compelling exclusive games to get the foot in the door from consumers.
I disagree. PS5 exclusive software was dogshit. Sold fine and has made a lot of money. Valve does fine as well. It's not a closed hardware platform, but it's a closed platform.

>It's profitable on paper because they are aggressively cannibalizing their future pipeline to bandage the current quarterly financial sheets.
1. They're not cannibalizing theit future pipeline by cancelling dogshit games.
2. Even if those games were successful, they wouldn't come close to the money Sony makes from the CoD/Fortnites/FIFAs/etc.

>Sony literally had to write off a massive 120 billion yen (~$800M) impairment loss on Bungie alone in their recent corporate filings.
That is a big number and a good example of Sony's recent failed first-party strategy. They would've been better off working with Bungie as a third-party. See, you say Playstation needs First-Party content. Bungie was part of that effort. So, you should be in support of that purchase in principle.

But that is probably the first point you've brought up that worries me. Yet, at the same time, you have yet to bring up the PS3 era. Things were far worse for Playstation then. Yet, with an $800M impairment write off (not sure what that means but I'll take it as a big bad number), things still look pretty good on paper.

>Thank you for conceding.
I didn't concede. Where did you make SIE's pivot into GAAS games during the PS5 generation a part of your argument that Playstation is in a bad place? Bringing up Marathon or Concord once or twice doesn't count. Bringing them up in context of a larger company wide pivot to chase live service pot of gold that disrupted first-party game output would count. But I didn't see you bring that up.

I'm not getting anything. I disagree with your assessment because it is, in the least, poorly structured and, at the worst, wrong.

Let me try and summarize the debate so far.

-I say Playstation makes most of its money from third-party software and doesn't need first-party software to succeed. You disagree.

-You cannot prove how the PS5 succeeded using only PS5 exclusive, first-party software, yet still think the PS6 would fail without it.

-You say first-party content is important, yet, ironically, you disagree with Sony's failed attempt to make their own first-party console-exclusive GAAS games. A contradiction.

-I say, Playstation is still the most profitable and financially successful generation DESPITE SIE's GAAS failed GAAS pivot. Which is true.

Do you dispute these statements?

As far as I can tell, none. In fact, they're growing their payrolls and expanding. Nintendo is doing better than Playstation these days. >line goes up, so industry is fine
This is brainlet thinking. Like the other anon said, this is the domain of investors who don't know anything about gaming and just view it as a commodity like cars or heavy appliances.

>people not buying new games means the industry is fine
No, it's the opposite. It means the few publishers who own those forever games are ok today, everyone else starves, and the industry as a whole stagnates.

>Valve bleeds customers because they can get away with it
Valve sells their hardware at cost and that's exact opposite of squeezing, you stooge. If they were marking it up and trying to get a profit on top of the high prices, that would be squeezing. It's not at all what Sony is doing.

>Valve profit margin
They don't report one because they're privately held. Xbox's numbers are in the toilet (which is why the division got raped by Asha), and Nintendo is around 18 to 25%, I think.

>what made Playstation successful
Good games and good hardware. They got arrogant in the PS3 era and got spanked by the 360 briefly, then brought it back with the PS4.

>PS5 is the most profitable generation
Yes, because of store fees and live service games made by someone who isn't Sony. It's not healthy because any of those games underperforming or finding some way to get around paying Sony those store fees (like Epic tries to do with Apple) means their only durable profit center collapses.

>$30b in revenue
Yes, but their income on that $30b is about $2.7b, which is the number I'm referring to. Their operating expenses are immense.

You cannot sell a luxury hardware upgrade on "historical momentum" alone if the software library is identical, especially not to the casual consumer base that you think will prop this up since the core audience is getting sick of Sony.
Since you already know what the PS6 hardware will offer, it makes sense that no one would upgrade to it from the PS5. Glad you at least dropped the retarded first-party software argument.

But if the PS6 launched for $700, I think it'd do fine. It's only $100 more than the PS5 right now. I think in order to be successful the price would need to come down instead of go up like consoles have this generation, but $700 would be a price people would go for.

Ragnarok was on PS4. Not exclusive first-party PS5 content. 15M didn't get sold on only PS5 either. I'm going to look up PS5 sales numbers, but I suspect you haven't. Because so many of your statements are lazy.

Let's see.

https://sonyinteractive.com/en/our-company/business-data-sales/

Where exactly did things stagnate for the PS5....? I dunno. I'm not seeing anything. FY21 during the height of lockdowns, supply chain shocks and covid?

>Because the PS5 didn't have a dry pipeline at launch. It survived its first three years on the massive momentum of massive, high-profile projects that began development ~2018.
Uh...can you list those games?

>The pipeline for the end of the PS5 era and the launch of the PS6 is shaping up to be completely barren.
True, but, again, I don't think that matters. I don't think first-party Playstation titles matter to the vast majority of Snoys.

Only if Valve cancels the Steam Machine and Steam Deck.

hey snoybro can you explain in your own words why ps5 sales are down 36% YoY?

Those weren't subsidized (not even at launch), they're sold at profit.

>This is brainlet thinking.
Games that don't make money die, get lay offs, studios closures, platforms shut down, etc.

>It means the few publishers who own those forever games are ok today, everyone else starves, and the industry as a whole stagnates.
By what measure? It's $200B a year in revenue and growing. It now has billions of users and growing.

>Valve sells their hardware at cost and that's exact opposite of squeezing, you stooge
When a company of 400 people, each of which effectively earns $100M in revenue for the company, can't subsidize their hardware products for their biggest fans, that sounds like squeezing to me. But a Valve D R O N E wouldn't think so. Just like Snoy or Tendie would suck their corporate overlord's cocks as well.

>and Nintendo is around 18 to 25%,
Better than Playstations.

>then brought it back with the PS4.
So, you're one of those people that thinks the PS4 first-party games were...good?

>because of store fees and live service games made by someone who isn't Sony. It's not healthy because any of those games underperforming or finding some way to get around paying Sony those store fees (like Epic tries to do with Apple) means their only durable profit center collapses.
Just like Valve.

>Their operating expenses are immense.
Do you want Sony to be more profitable? Do you want...line to go up?

Snoybro here

>hey snoybro can you explain in your own words why ps5 sales are down 36% YoY?
PS5 sales are down because of price hikes cause of the AI shit.

>Those weren't subsidized (not even at launch), they're sold at profit.
Yea, cause Valve really needs them to be proftiable.

>PS5 sales are down because of price hikes cause of the AI shit.
How will they resolve this for the PS6?
>>
>>747532605
By doing the same thing Valve did. Hike the prices so they don't lose too much money on them.
>>
>>747532645
But that won't increase sales, if anything they will drop further.
>>
>>747532706
Just like the Steam Machine/Deck. Everyone's facing the same issues in the consumer electronics sector.
>>
>>747532751
How come the Switch 2 is largely unaffected, with record sales?
>>
>>747532789
It's not. Sales are projected to be lower than expected this year as a result of the price hikes.
