ARM is shit and will never be a mature ecosystem until something like UEFI is standardized.
If installing an arbitrary OS on an architecture may involve stealing it from customer service while they have the bootloader unlocked as a mandatory step, then it's not a usable architecture.

The more interesting progress will be wireless streaming on Linux instead of Poodroid, meaning that something like Electric Maple gets integrated into mainline WiVRN instead of the eternal "Why do you need that, standalone Poodroid streaming exists. What is your usecase?" Jew.

>>
>>747498895
There's already should be headsets that are wireless and also don't have a pc in them, think?
But also. as i understand, position, eye and controller tracking, pass through and wifi connectivity all better be done locally on headset, and these tasks are somewhat compute intensive, so it would be stupid to not include a proper SoC in there, because it would already have a weaker one just to do the compute tasks listed above. But that's me talking out of my ass.
Also meta and chinese standalone headsets already set the baseline for new headsets.
>>
>>747499595

>Wireless
>Look inside
>Wires
Just have an external compute unit handle wireless and you can have something that's dual purpose.
>>747501042
Doing them locally on the headset is retarded. A short cable leading to an external SoC will not cause any problems that would make it worth dealing with having the SoC in the headset.

Standalone with integrated SoC is going to die, batteries are already moved to external housings to comply with the EU regs (including the battery in the headset was retarded anyway and only done to speed up obsolescence) and the component uncertainty means that they're going to have problems with product launches if they have to sell everything as one package. Standalone "worked" when components were cheap and readily available. This final wave of standalone headsets are just whatever was in development and would have lost more money on preproduction if they had switched.
>>
>>747490219
I would never be so careless with something so expensive.
>>

>>747503791
Why are you defending Valve?
>>
>>747501884
>Just have an external compute unit handle wireless and you can have something that's dual purpose.

But that's retarded.
But also, locally means on the headset side, not that it's inside the headset itself where the lenses are and etc. tracking was done at some point on the host pc, but i think that's also untrue, like the lighthouse tracking worked by capturing the lighthouse base station by the all detectors on headset and controllers, and not the other way around, which could mean that tracking was done on the headset with the results being send to the host pc.
It 90% was done like that, i remembered that old headsets already had the tech where the received image is skewed by the newer headset position.

Also the SoC in a dongle is kinda retarded from another angle. SoC needs to be cooled. but if it's external and/or dagnles around, users will start putting it up their ass (or in backpacks and pockets) for comfort, and fry the compute unit until it dies. It's not a problem for batteries because they don't need to be cooled to a degree SoC does. and you can replace it if it breaks. So the SoC is put in the headset because it is guaranties that it can be cooled properly
>>
>>747504343
I still don't understand what you're talking about. Making USB-C a common charging requirement is objectively a good thing. No one wants to fiddle around with a billion proprietary chargers and cables like Apple enforces. Don't confuse Valve being jews with a good change.

You will never be able to reach same quality over the radio connection and you have to solve so many problems - foveated rendering, compression, frame delays, connection interference and hardware to process all that. It's peak definition of solution for problem that shouldn't exist. Add to that the current economy and you will end up with expensive device Valve can't even manufacture.

>>747514667
I already use foveated encoding with a quest pro and it works great, and getting tangled in a cable and feeling it pull the whole time you're playing is a problem that does exist, and wireless is the solution
I will NEVER go back to tethered, and neither will any hardware company that gives a shit, if PSVR3 ever gets made for the PS6 it will also be wireless
and what do you expect valve to do otherwise? Suddenly design a tethered headset and somehow release it before ram prices go back to normal and it loses its only reason for existing?
>>
>>747515332
>I already use foveated encoding with a quest pro and it works great
nice
the eye tracking of the quest pro is notably slow so it's a really good sign for the frame
>>
>>747515332
I care more about image quality and performance that I do about cables. wifi speeds inherently limits maximum framerate. Modern cables can be made smaller and light and weight less that a battery pack. Tangling would still be a problem, but I never found it worse that having to recharge or batteries having limited life.

What I want is reliable PC headset with modern optics. That's it. Not expensive device with hardware that most its buyers will not need. Valve decided to make headset usable with Steam games and for Steam customers, yet decided to target Meta standalone casuals. It makes no sense.
>>
>>747516514

>>747518659
Yeah if you already own a headset there is little point outside of the comfort factor.

But I think that was Valve's goal?
The frame, controller and cube all seem to be designed for a generation of first time buyers.
Rather than buying your first pc in a supermarket, Valve made their own alternative.
I imagine if it weren't for the AI crisis, they'd be priced appropriately too.

a lot of people don't know the quest 3 is actually better today than when it came out. like it shipped with a 100hz framerate cap, now it does 240hz (just via firmware updates.) the steam frame only goes up to 144hz.

240hz feels good but i still prefer actual monitors, even for games people associate with VR, like flight sims. it is a hugely superior experience to be surrounded by three big, high-refresh-rate monitors, rather than to have one shitty phone screen strapped to my face

that's the thing: no one knows. it is literally just technological suicide. A DECADE AGO they solved wireless streaming with no latency or compression, then they chose to use this much shittier solution.

it is probably to save costs, since a WiGig radio costs like $30 or whatever, and every retarded VR company wants to put a $300 mobile phone motherboard+APU in to their headset now so brown 12yos can play roblox in VR

it doesn't you negro you didn't even TRY reading you slop output
it says right there it can't go past 207 without compression, since that's the exact maximum bandwidth the display driver can reach
ALSO you will never reach 207 in a stable manner because the panels were simply not manufactured with these tolerances in mind, most people can't get above 160-180 stable and going above makes it shit itself (and it's going to be a blurry mess anyway)

you'll be able to do the exact same trick with the frame and since it's toleranced for 144 it's going to be easier to run higher

Facebook simply put 240hz panels in their headset and underprovisioned them to 120 so they could "unlock" additional capabilities in-place to keep the headset competitive as competitors tried to 1-up it. You can't overclock a 120hz LCD to 240hz, it would die long before that.

Considering the ghosting after around 200, they definitely aren't 240Hz panels. They're probably designed for 165, and they put a driver capable of pushing 207 on there.
They underprovisioned them to 120 for battery life and because it's quite hard to manage to push more than that in real cases. Standalone can't do it outside of a very few potato games, and for streaming the decoding speed becomes problematic

VR is happening in a reality where american companies seek out investment opportunities where theres no profit to be made.
Meta lost many billions it. Valve lost maybe hundreds of millions.
Then theres some military contractors that sell 60k units and its working out fine.

There's profit to be made, just not the ridiculous exponential growth everyone wants now as a consequence of social decay and governments entering the early stages of hyperinflation. Manufacturers used to make tons of weird hardware for extremely limited users just because people used to like doing what they do instead of everything being a profit engine.

The whole system needs a reset.

youd think micro oled displays are the hip new thing now
>>
>>747534024
Obviously they're gonna do a refresh model with oled to get the whales to double dip.
>>
>>747534112
I dont think they will, maybe a third party will because apparently, its pretty modular and you can already swap things like the camera. theyre probably not going to do a refresh because they probably already know theyre not going to sell a shitton of these to justify spending money on it.
>>
>>747534024
micro oleds aren't ready

tracking and decoding takes a good amount of ressources
they could've made it less powerful but then they'd have to go with a custom design that would be more expensive, better to have the headroom and fit some light standalone stuff

AVP is overengineered with a ton of wasteful bullshit thrown in and the apple tax. It's high price isn't indicative of what you need to match a spec at all. I think the passthrough addon is higher res and frame rate, we will see which has the better sensor.

It’s just a dumb headset with screen, why even put ram on it. Stupid “engineers” and they can’t wirelessly make VR.
>>
>>747524741
With directional antennas it can go very far

You can mesh the wifi, the dongle can be used with a router at the same time

You can run active ethernet/usb to the room you play in and dongle from there

This is way more practical than a monster displayport cord that's pretty expensive and can break, and can only play in one room where the PC is, and is only enjoyable with a pulley on the ceiling

Wiredfags that aren't sit down simmers just need to be put in a mass grave already. I'm tired of wireposts shitting up threads. It's almost as tiring as any "why did VR fail" talking point from a third worlder. It's a terrible idea for a general market headset.
>>
>>747525509
This is so stupid when there are free FOV testing apps that can provide the difference for your face and eyes with perfect accuracy
>>
>>747529016
I'm also amazed not just by the delay, but just the idea they were going to finish everything from november to april at the latest. And this is a company that's pessimistic about timelines.
>>
>>747533875
Well in theory the frame could get a rumble headstrap
>>
>>747534851
>>747535257
it also has to do eyetracking, and one day maybe hand tracking, also low latency reprojection on the headset

Basically a SOC does a shitload of different things and I'm tired of explaining it
>>
>>747537853
Well research before you buy, but its at firesale prices and you can get it used. Sony officially made it a PCVR headset, and community people got more features working. I heard of one guy on reddit saying he got real no bullshit HDR working, that's big if true
>>
The Frame likely will boost sales of the Quest 3 given it is half the price. Latest rumors are $1150.
>>
>>747539212
I guess for that price it's worth a try
>>
>>747537853
The PSVR2 has a lower quality oled screen and Quest 2 style optics. Only bright side is last month people got eye tracking working for pcvr. Beyond that the Quest 3/Frame is superior even though they both use LCD, because of superior optics.
>>
>>747539336
just FYI its fresnel not pancake
>>
>>747539403
>>747539502
Damn it, everytime I want to upgrade from my Quest 2 it becomes a whole hassle of balancing pros and cons
I just use it for JAV honestly, this is too much mental work
>>
>>747539793
Wait anon! I can solve this right now. For VR video, especially JAV where subjects get close to the camera. You want pancake and high binocular overlap for good overlap and clarity when you cross your eyes to look at titties.

The best choices are the frame and pico 4 enterprise for big pancake lenses. Quest 3 doesn't have good overlap, but I'm wondering if you could push the lenses close together then set your correct IPD in software rather than going by the lens separation. Pancake has bigger sweetspots so your physical IPD and virtual IPD don't have to match.
>>
>haven't touched my Quest 3 in like a quarter of a year cause I was waiting for the Steam Frame
Gabe is a fat nigger. I don't give a shit about the price, I'm not brown but that shit better be good.
>>
>>747540052
Guess I'll wait for the frame, but it'll probably be all sold out
>>
>>747540232
Yeah I got worried when we stopped seeing frame shipments to valve. I think they vastly underestimated demand or couldn't secure parts. I saw comment sections for valve hardware that wasn't VR-centric at all and sometimes it got talked about more than the machine.

It really isn't. Simula One is going to be doing this, so you have a wired headset that also has compute unit for wireless. Integrating everything into one package is shit for upgrading parts, shit for comfort, shit for heat dissipation, shit for PCVR image quality, etc.
