You just look for the weird thing that was placed there. Like fukkin Waldo, standing in a desert. Your brain just starts filtering out the garbage, so needs to be hooked back in to look for what's important.This is unironically why zoomers can't play older games. They're conditioned to just ignore shit because it's useless and serves no purpose, when you are supposed to see something you've never seen before, and go investigate.If you investigated every single decorative urn in a Skyrim dungeon it would take you three fucking hours, so it's no surprise that someone who has grown up with that is going to get fucked by a game that just expects you to be curious about an urn in an otherwise empty room.

Quest markers are a solution to a problem.The probalem only appeared when games became big and open enough that people could not be expected to find whatever they're suppose to go by process of elimination, if not by logic and reading comprehension.At which point your options are to either go the morrowind route, which is more difficult to implemnt, because someone needs to write the navigation instruction and somone needs to playtest it, blind, to determine if the instructions are any good.... or you could use a quest marker and be done with it.It does flatten and trivialize something that could be an immersive and fun element of the game, but it's also an element that costs dev time and effort, so to have it you're going to be missing out on something else.Consider all the autistic screeching Hollow Knight recieved for not showing where you are on the map by default.Players often treat such things as the developer hassling them, rather than an opportunity to immerse themselves and learn the map and be rewarded for it.

Quest Markers are a symptom of the retarded and endless quest for more "le realism" in games. They're there because if they weren't you could argue people would be trying to interract with non-interractables, go through doors that are static geo, or go to areas that are just background. They make all this shit as realistic as possible, just to not let you interract with any of it, and then spit in your face with markers all over fucking everything. Realism was a mistake. The death of stylization was a mistake. The focus on graphics over interractivitiy was a mistake.
