Get the NG master collection with the 3 games, and for Sigma 2 get the NM mod to bring back the gore of the original. If you're concerned about cost there's plenty of cheap keys out there.I personally own both versions but haven't played Black in sometime since it's on Urine5 and I get the stupid loading texture screens all the fucking time.

I'll see how I feel at the end of the series since I intend to play all 4. I just get the sense the fanbase has a highly specific set of tastes and that might be, as you said, why it has remained niche.

Less than the dungeons and level design, i find it more about how you end up fighting batches of enemies in close spaces, it's the only game i recall using the walls to move and attack. 2 has far more open areas and spams ninjas and explosive shurikens in some open areas. 3 just throws all that away and reduces the game to combat arena to combat arena, even if i like the combat best there. Really, 1 feels like a very deliberate game with it's combat.
