Now they are soft colors. The ground textures now look like they are just smudged versions of the old ones, less detail to match the textures of the models on top. The shadows are weird, more detailed shadows but I think that the soft shadows worked better. The trees have no shadows under them which also makes everything look wrong.

Thats likely because it was first drawn as black ink outlines and then colors were added on top, but the ink was preserved. Nowadays this is not done anymore, artists in general tend to go for a "no outlines" style. More similar to painting, less stylized, more realistic.Warcraft 3 followed a comic book art style that is just not "hip" anymore, so they ended up taking a modern approach.
