And this can be combined with something that a lot of RPGs (most notably Baldur's Gate 3) do really well, which is "flavor text" dialogue. Dialogue choices that don't change outcomes, but still vary significantly based on your character/background/class. Especially since none of the WoL's dialogue is voiced, this would be insanely easy to implement.

If anything, the fact that the previous expansion was headlined by a random twitter user with a couple vocaroo clips is kind of shocking given how much money the game was already making back then.

I'm generally of the opinion that FFXIV has been largely afraid of actual, meaningful deaths for a long time. It's very rare for characters that have been around for a while to die. The most we get is shit like villains biting it and homeboys that we met thirty minutes ago (i.e. Otis or the Satrap) getting bodied. I think EW was severely damaged by not having high-stakes, emotional moments that sold the despair of the Final Days by having long-term characters die. It was a perfect chance for some shit like Raubahn dying to stem the Blasphemies in Ala Mhigo, his sacrifice inspiring and galvanizing his people so that they don't get consumed. Or having Master Matoya die protecting Idyllshire or something. It would have made the apocalypse feel more real (and occurring in locations other than Garlemald and India) and been a good way to finish arcs off.I remember there being some people worried after HW's story that we'd start to get a Game of Thrones situation where characters get killed off frivolously, frequently, and for cheap shock value. Which they didn't do, thankfully, but I worry they've done the opposite. They're afraid to kill off characters people care about and cause meltdowns, so they introduce characters slated to die and make sure nobody gets too attached so it's just low-stakes drama.
