a genuinely fun little action game on the harder modes with an amazing style (if you play the wii version or a modded version of the pc release that unfucks the visuals) and a comfy if objectively very empty open world once you figure out how the fuck to drive the bike
>>
I am going to try the game soon. Is it easy to navigate?

A medicore game with cool character designs and great music. Suda cultists will tell you that its intentionally bad to get a message across, but they're retarded.

This is the most 2007 game ever; it's crazy. It feels like one of the Tony Hawk Underground cities only they turned down the number of NPCs.

Explain how the game cucking you out of Letz Shake after a 10 minute blank corridor intentionally isn’t bad on purpose

they're literally the same as the wii version tho

Played it on the Switch and it was really fun, the grind between boss fights is a bitch though but I get its there for pacing or whatever. Sex with pic related, white hair plus dark skin is a deadly combo. Shame Travis had oneitis for french pussy.

>>747514289
Because its made to set up the Henry fight which is kino.

Still bad on purpose. You the player had your time wasted even if it pays off later.
>>
>>747516281
suda's been doing the boss fight fakeout thing forever in NMH, it's one of the series tropes
>>
what's the best way to play this game? Dolphin emulator with a wiimote? the PC release?
>>
>>747516435
I know, I’m still fucking mad over DarkStar to this day
>>
>>747516573
the PC releases were patched somewhat recently and are actually pretty good, they have controller support, get the GoG versions if you are going to buy them.
>>
>>747516573
unless you have a wiimote, you won't emulate it properly, it uses motion controls
don't think it lets you use a normal controller in OG version
>>
>>747516435
one of the thing that ruined nmh3 for me is how many fakeouts were there, i wanted to fight the chuuni and sniper aliens so bad
>>
>>747514289
that isn't "I made the game bad on purpose" that's "I don't have the money to make more bosses so lets do something clever with it instead of just cutting the number

if it was just bad on purpose, that level wouldn't have you fighting nothing but elite enemies the whole hallway
>>
>>747516573
>>747517374
it takes some finangling but you can set up the motion controls to the right stick easily enough to play the wii version with a controller. there's no actual pointing needed just waggles

>>747517374
>>747517883
I am not getting a consensus here...

>>
>>747514289
You will sit in the cuck chair while Henry Cooldown has fun fighting (You)r boss
>>
>>747517776
The enemies aren’t the issue. It’s the fact the game literally puts you a long ass dark grey corridor and makes you run through it for nothing to piss you off. But If you think that’s an issue of the game being under-developed then fine.

Another example are the “Job Minigames” which I’m fairly sure even Suda has admitted were tedious by design. It’s to emulate the “daily grind” partially from Suda’s early job hopping but also Travis’s having to scrape on by for his Assassin duels.

On the other hand people who defend Jasper Batt Jr’s fight as bad on purpose are 100 cultists. That I won’t debate. It’s just a shit annoying fight

Oh anon, when you get to Shinobu (the 3rd or so boss you face) the difficulty rockets STRAIGHT UP. Get used to only attacking her once or twice, not trying to hit a full combo - she counter attacks, and when low on health she has a seeking 1 hit kill ability. When she does the high guard, hit her with your A or B button "stun moves" to stagger her and let you do a wrestling move; that's the best way to bring her health down.

Oh by the way the games in order go
>NMH
>NMH2
>No More Heroes Travis Strikes Back Ultimate Edition (this is a top down isometric perspective but definitely worthwhile if you played the other two)
>NMH3 (this is back to full 3D and is using a modern engine)

Another tip
>When you unlock the drunk Russian who collects the Lovikov balls , use your first few collectibles to get the "Enemy Shows up on the Map" ability
It isn't JUST the enemy that shows up, it will also put all the uncollected Lovikov ball collectibles on the minimap which have little orangeish dots (as compared to the pink ones which are little bits of cash underground)
>Every time you beat a level, go to Thunder Ryu and do all the workout/training options to up your stats/skills
It important to go with the original Blood Berry beam katana first of all, as it will have an exercise that is done with each katana to extend its combo. Then go back with Tsubaki or whatever upgraded katana you have and do it again as it will be available with each new katana. The other strength and stamina abilities are there to upgrade after every level.

no more heroes 2 is fucking god awful. it plays worse, it looks worse, the story is somehow even less substance and less style at the same time and travis is wildly out of character to both how he started and ended the previous game - which everyone kind of pretends ended in a completely different way from how it actually did.

It’s just a game with very low lows. The 20 minute shopping mall brawl, the jobs, the bad bosses but it does have genuinely good bits such as Alice Twilight and Margaret Moonlight along with some other genuinely solid bosses. It’s just a game that didn’t need to exist but got made anyway.

there isn't a single part of nmh2 that's improved from the first game. the closest is being able to swap swords on the fly but they also made the dual blades better then all the others anyway just like how tsubaki-3 is in the OG and then removed the cool stuff about tsubaki 1 (works melee into combos, not that melee even matters in nmh2 because it just does extra damage instead of stun/guardbreak) and tsubaki 2 being a big ass club instead of big penis sword

margaret moonlight and alice twilight are the literal peaks of the entire NMH series in terms of boss fights.

>doesn't refute anything of what i said
the moveset is so broken that you can slice through anything in bitter because bosses take forever to attack and when they do it's the most obvious "IM ATTACKING NOW" windup ever seen before

alice, margaret, captain vladimir and all of jaspers' forms would end in like 20 seconds if they didn't have moments where they just decide to stop taking damage and run away from you

there is not a single fight in 2 that comes close to anything resembling "difficult" except for maybe getting punched off the window on the final fihgt

If more things- stories, games, whatever- were like this, I'd be a much happier man. Would it make the things actually better? I dunno, but I for one really enjoy when something is outwardly weird or funny but plays itself straight and doesn't do any wink-nudge "aren't we silly" shit. Which obviously doesn't always apply to NMH as a whole, but you get the point.
>>
>>747527018
nigger, you are acting as if NMH 1 has GOOD combat when it is even more simplistic than 2's.
the actual combat of every NMH game is trash, ultimately it comes down to the characters, music and minigames when comparing all 3 together and 2 just so happens to have the best of all three of those categories.
the literal 1 aspect in which NMH 1 is better than 2 is its final boss is way better, thats it.
i still like 1 a lot, it is a good game but i just like 2 more okay bby

>>747527372

nigger, if we are going to judge the games based on that then NMH2 is the worst piece of shit ever

i'm convinced they never thought they'd make a sequel to NMH1, it had the perfect ending and then NMH2, TSA and 3 release and they keep bouncing back and forth between serious and parody while failing to do either

also the OST for NMH3 sucks ASS, barely, maybe 2 good songs in it and that's it

It's still pretty funny but I'd argue the effect was greater in a time where it was rare for a game to be meta whereas today it's literally every game. Did you play Romeo is a Dead Man? Though not starring Travis unfortunately, some of the mechanics were obviously honed during NMH3.

For what its worth I think Suda51 was hobbled by NMH3's debut on fucking Switch. It was notoriously hard to program for compared to PC and other consoles and doubly so for Japanese devs it seemed from many multiplat releases. In fact, when NMH3 was playable on Switch emulators like Yuzu, there was a mod that was made up exclusively of UE tweaks that made it look and play much better but obviously it wasn't available the same way on native hardware

>>
>>747543149
Perhaps some were, but the first couple of bosses taught you pretty much to evade/block and counter with a combo. Shinobu doesn't let you really get off a full combo most of the time even if you hit her when sh'es vulnerable. She pushes back faster and usually gets a couple hits in even if you start blocking. Her abilities aren't telegraphed quite the same way as previous bosses and come out faster (except for the longet charge ups), and she has an insta-killl attack that tracks you when she gets low on health. Overall its just a massive step up in difficulty from the previous fights. Even the "best" way to take her down, baiting her into an attack or two and countering just long enough for her to visibly do the high guard with her katana then using high stun attack to put her into "dizzy" state vulnerable to a grab, requires quick execution. She doesn't guard for long, you have to use the right stun, and and she doesn't stay dizzy for more than a second so you can miss the grab opportunity. There's also other little annoyances like her being able to vault off all the beams around the old school building you fight her inside.

Its not impossible by any means, but I totally understand people surprised by the difficulty spike vs what came before.

>>747553548
Yeah, it was sort of unusual and had the isometric top down perspective in comparison to the full 3D of the other titles. I didn't think it was as good as the others, but it was an attempt to do something different in the interim before NMH3 came out. I'd stay its worthwhile overall. It also had this ennui-laden track in the waiting room for the racing mini-game of all things (if I remember correctly).

Shit game made by the master of style over substance. Suda's entire gamography, or what you call it is just saying "haha video games sure are le stupid, aren't they?", wasting your time on purpose, all while referencing arcade games (because those get a pass apparently) and movies nonstop. It's why he attracts fans who have nothing but contempt for the medium aka fags and troons. Suda has legitimately never made a game that's above a 6/10.

Killer7 and NMH1 are examples that style can carry a game entirely even if they are not that mechanically deep

the problem with NMH2, TSA and 3 is that they became the things they were parodying but worse

they also want to be extremely serious at points and then the next scene will forget about it. NMH1 and Killer7 maintain the same tone throughout the game, it' almost feels like SUDA was parodying itself with the later entries
>>

I'm not a Suda cultist and I think this too, but I also don't think that that makes the game good. I don't know why Suda keeps shoving arcade shit in everything he makes, when his games are the antithesis of arcade game design. They're all piss easy with endless amounts of time wasting filler and long cutscenes.

it's probably the most mechanically intensive fight if you are actually trying to dodge the dragon without abusing i-frames from changing katanas

i recently replayed the game and i was amazed at how many fights, maybe like 95% of them can be beaten by mashing even if you tank hits

the bosses on the latter half only take longer because they literally have a mechanic where they run away from you and stop taking damage

NMH 2 is just less concise and an obvious "uhhh shit we need a sequel" type story. It's not a bad game by any means but like everyone else has said, it doesn't improve over anything the first game did except maybe getting rid of the open world but honestly it kinda grew on me
>>
Anyone played Flower, Sun, and Rain?

I'm just gonna say, I think the open world was fantastic. I love wandering around with it, and it increased my immersion.
>>
>>747572949
I understand the plot and everything, the only thing I don't get is why he was getting his ass beat by some girl in an apartment
>>
I'm also gonna say this, NMH2 is much worse for removing the open world. What a braindead decision btw. They literally had a fully modelled open world ready to go, all they needed to do is update some areas, add in some new shit, and show some signs of time passing. And the fact that all the sheep are saying that removing the connective tissue from the sequel is somehow a good thing is shocking.

NMH2 went too far with it. I like to compare NMH to Dead Rising in that the first game is campy kino and the second game just massively misses the mark and forgets what made the first game so charming

My only real complaint is the pointless empty overworld, needing to grind the side-job minigames in order to pay entry fees and for new items/clothes, and the fact that you need to go back to the employment office every time you want to do a new side-job so you're constantly needing to drive back and forth.

I prefer NMH2 if for no other reason than they streamlined this whole process by getting rid of the overworld entirely and making the side-job grinding better.

The open world was literally half of what made the game so good. It's what grounded travis's character as just being some guy who had to make ends meet outside of the glorious assassin missions. I feel like everyone has just been parroting the same 'le open world bad' complaint without any further thought since the game released.

The grinding is meant to add to the style and overall narrative of the first game, and I think that's also why they removed the grind from the second game: since Travis has already been number one, every other ranked assassin WANTS to fight him (and Jasper engineered the whole thing this time anyway)

But the open world is fun. I think this idea that a game that's trying to establish a chill slice of life vibe needs to feed you dopamine 24/7 is insane. It's the same with people complaining about hyrule field in oot. It exists to give a sense of adventure and some downtime in between the highpoints. Not every game has to move at a breakneck speed.

There's absolutely nothing to do except poke the ground for extra cash. Hyrule field has stuff to find and it's a proper hub that actually leads to where you'll go next. You can you can see Death Mountain while you're traversing it, you can see Hyrule Castle etc. Except for the beach fight, all the NMH bosses are just "go to this random part of the map and then get teleported to the boss fight that takes place... somewhere". Riding Epona was also a cool novelty at the time; meanwhile, Travis' bike is genuinely the worst controlling vehicle I've ever experienced in a video game ever. All the shops could've been a menu that you access when you select Travis' door in his apartment. It's not like you can seamlessly enter them from the open world anyway, there's a loading screen between the open world and interacting with every single indoor location. The resources it took to develop the overworld could've and should've been spent on something else. Like maybe making the combat fun. But it was more important for Suda to go "LOL Travis poor just like I was!" than make a good video game.
>>
>>747577954
I thought the point of the open was to be as bored and empty as Travis' life outside of killing, really make you feel that boredom and frustration and look forward to the next kill. Which is a great point artistically but people don't like when they sacrifice constant fun for a different emotional response in video games.
>>
>>747581171
It's not much more fun doing the same assassination mission repeatedly to afford beam katana upgrades to actually do the Henry fight.

But you do have proper levels, they're just segmented by the open(hub) world.
>>747581258
It's fun to dive in dumpsters, do side challenges, and just generally look around, mess about. The tasks in the open world help to chill the player out and then build up anticipation for the next encounter. It helps players build a stronger emotional connection to the world and characters than if you just jumped from level to level. Not everything has to be streamlined for short attention spans.
>>747581510
>I thought the point of the open was to be as bored and empty as Travis' life outside of killing, really make you feel that boredom and frustration and look forward to the next kill.
Somewhat possible, although I don't think the developers tried to make it horribly boring, and personally don't think it is. Yes it's meant to exude some level of mundanity, but I think the open world was still meant to be a selling point considering this was releasing on the wii. Again, I think it's just one of those memetic talking points where everyone gets fixated on; "Oh no more heroes? Yeah it has one of the worst open worlds ever made brah"

Genuinely, what was Suda thinking with the horrifically outdated "lol turn based games" segment in 3? It's been over a decade since Square made a mainline turn based Final Fantasy now.

To be fair the game does start on like mission 26 out of 35 or some shit, then expects you to read a japanese exclusive book with more information that gives you conflicting information, only for Dan to show up 20 years later in Travis Strikes Back.
>>
>>747595917
there is a Rocky Balboa training scene as well

i recently replayed NMH2 and 3 and i'm shocked at how bad they were, the only fight worth a shit is the japanese chick with the alien hands in 3

also why do half of the aliens fucking die before we get to fight them, that's so fucking gay
>>
>>747587759
Bad Girl's model in NMH1 has a kind of crackwhore attractiveness to her that none of her future appearances managed to match

I can't hate this game man, as disappointing as it was at times.

>bring back bad girl
>change voice actress
>change her appearance
>change her personality
what was the point

NMH3 literally kills two aliens to make you fight people from the previous two games

it's a game full of bad decisions, it's honestly baffling to me
>>
>>747597970
It's kinda similar to MGS4 where Suda knew it was going to be the final one so he forced some fanservice into it that just detracted from it.
>>
>>747597970
Kimmy may as well have been an entirely different character in 3. She was just there to be a lazy Lady Gaga joke.

Just finished 1, is it true that 2 drop the open world stuff?
>>
>>747606234
Yeah they dropped it. The main complaint of 1 was the open world and having to do those minigame missions so in 2 they dropped the world and iirc you don't really have to do the minigames anymore.

On a real Nintendo Wii idiot fucking die already if you can't figure this out. If you even have to ask these kind of questions, you are not Him, you're not even a gamer. In order to be initiated on any topic you have to take initiative, it's about thinking for yourself, inner revelations. Internal locus of control vs external locus of control. To a conscious living White man, we never have to ask this kind of question, but to a typical brown clown or sleeping White man, the world is just kind of happening to them, so they have to ask this question "what should I do? What's better?". Enough debating on what a better man should be, just fucking be one already.

they couldn't make this scene more cringeworthy if they tried. wierd how the unknown writer of nmh2 wanted to redeem travis by turning him into a hero but then at the same time he went out of his way to make him infinitely more disgusting, tryhard, and unlikable than he ever was in the first game

Yes, if you want to experience great and unique video games
You don't need to play them to understand No More Heroes, though
The only link between NMH and previous Grasshopper Manufacture games is Travis' character. It's implied that Travis from Killer 7 and Travis from No More Heroes are the same person, but that's about it

I think he just didn't know what to do with her, and only did it because fans like her. Which is strange, because he once said that he considered the possibility of a Shinobu (and Bad Girl) spinoff game.
>>747587759
She strikes me as a shotgun wedding kind of gal. Expect her to demand drunk sex a lot.

Great games
Been discovering the wii library last few months. its kinda a top 3 console. When I was a kid it was just the wii sports and mario kart machine
Didn't know it also had like 30-50 exclusive 8/10+ games on it and a few ports of games that are a lot more fun with the wiimote like call of duty campaigns and pikmin
Now that Dobson comic where he was defending the wii with shovelware instead of last story or muramusa pisses me off
