Shieldybros I can't believe hunters dont use shields. Are we really the passive gender?

>a tower shield for ranged attacks
not even melee combat so it's hardly fair

stylish

it'd just be silly to try and bat away the lance with your off-hand

now crossguards are the real mark of a wuss

evidently the developers, otherwise they wouldn't have put a joke item in the game specifically to make fun of the people who use shields
i just wish fromsoft would actually spend more than .02 seconds balancing even a single one of their games, because even without shields they are consistently trivialized by dozens of options

honestly lore wise it doesn't make much sense to not have shields made out of the same materials that can handle being bashed into the very same beasts repeatedly. like you've got materials that can handle explosions but not a big wolfman swinging? I get it's more of a gameplay thing but there's no way they wouldn't have developed shields for beast hunting.
>>
>>747514115
Have the hunters tried using something more sturdy than a rotten repurposed bit of untreated wood?

The game already says beasts are strong enough to tear through armor. It says normal bullets dont work on them. Ergo it makes sense to be quick, nimble and use quicksilver over normal bullets. The game gives an explanation, retards just hated that it wasnt Demons Souls or Dark Souls again where you could hide behind a shield and beat 99% of the game minus Allant and Gwyn.
>>
>>747516067
>untreated wood?
it was almost certainly treated with the blood of a grannies menopausal cunt stabbed with the teeth of a penis-eel or similar
>>
>>747515210
i bet they had some pretty intense arguments back in the day
>>
>>747516340
It gives an explanation, but that explanation doesn't make sense. They can be badly hurt by just the weight of a gravestone being swung by a man or a human stabbing them with a weapon that would have less force than a normal sword, but bullets that hit significantly harder than those can't do damage at all? They can tear through armour with ease making it useless, but you can take multiple hits from them just fine without any protection? They could have just said it's safer to be nimble and that quicksilver hurts them more than other materials instead.
>>
>>747517023
hunters are juiced bro, they're not normal humans
>>
>>747517023
Durability is not the same as strength. Secondly real hunters are superhuman.

That is irrelevant. You don't wear a bulletproof vest to be immune to bullets, you wear it to survive a single time where you otherwise would have died.
>>
>>747517023
the real question is why most hunters arent just sniping beasts from afar
>>

because snipers engender passivity or something we need to rollslop

What's the difference between Murmillo and Secutor?
>>
>>747518574
>The secutor ("pursuer") was developed to fight the retiarius. As a variant of the murmillo, he wore the same armour and weapons, including the tall rectangular shield and the gladius. The helmet of the secutor, however, covered the entire face with the exception of two small eye-holes in order to protect his face from the thin prongs of the trident of his opponent. The helmet was also round and smooth so that the retiarius net could not get a grip on it.

>Shields are nice, but not if they engender passivity.
I've always hated this line. It always felt so smug. Like, it's not the player's fault that they can't use shields in previous From Software games only as weak defensive tools (and that any attempt at trying to use them offensively would feel like shit because of how slow and weak shield attacks would always be). Tons of action games prior to Bloodborne have allowed for players to use shields in more offensive and aggressive manners, wether it's action games or fighting games with characters that use shields offensively instead of defensively.

>>
>>747514115
The fact that the souls games never truly built around shield play and depended exclusively on Evade rolling as always irked me. Yeah things got better with Elden Ring, but that should have been the foundation from Game 1.
>>
>>747519291
some of the hardest encounters in any of the souls games are trivialized by shields, its just you shieldniggers think mindlessly turtling should be viable from start to finish instead of actually having to apply yourself once in a while
>>
Meanwhile hunters exclusively use the "I am invulnerable to all damage for multiple seconds and I can spam this 150 times in a row" button

fuck you're stupid

The shield is actually incredible in Bloodborne, even as much as Miyazaki tried to neuter it.
Spacing bosses out at midrange with a shield to buffer mistakes, and then rally back any chip is stupidly good for literally the entire game. Several bosses are completely shut down by the shield, the expectation being that you aren't using it, and not a single boss actually has a good answer to anyone with experience using a shield in these games showing up and firmly insisting on using it in Bloodborne.
Miyazaki is BEGGING you to engage with his larp, because the game falls flat on its ass if you don't.
Use a shield. Play unlocked. Hang out at midrange and punish the shitty gap closers every enemy has. Play patiently. Ignore whatever weird fucking parry and riposte, and limb punishing system he envisioned, and just abuse the forced animations every time you charged heavy another limb. And laugh at the game for trying to look hard.

There's a reason he resorted to bosses input reading, having seizures, giant anime shockwaves and sword explosions, pivoting on a point mid animation, sliding 30 feet during animations, and just oneshotting you if you have any build that isn't pure tank.
>>
>>747519631
i think thats what he means, its just boring to play. It would be cool if shield took more skill like block directions

This was always retarded.
Shields never "engender passivity". It's actually the opposite. You need to be aggressive else the opponent will drain your stamina and push your shit
Anybody who believes that never learned how to play with shields
