Why did Final Fantasy stop being good?
>>
Your fetish is dumb.
>>
It's crazy the best FF game XI sold the least.
>>
>>747520028
it's not. it came into a market dominated by wow and there was a smear campaign by video game journalists against all japanese games in the early 00s. it's crazy how 16 sold so few (crazy good)
>>
I like Resonance, I just wish it wasn't HD2D
>>
1-10: Final Fantasy
11-present: Oh shit nigger what are you doing
>>
>>747519851
How the fuck did FF15 sell so much when everyone hated it?

>>
>>747520613
people were hungry for a sp ff and the demo was actually good.
>>
>>747519851
At its best (1991-2001) FF was coming out at a consistent rate, arguably formulaic but undeniably popular. When the guys after Sakaguchi took over you saw delays, reboots and trend-chasing. It wasn't about giving people Final Fantasy anymore, it was giving them whatever the person in charge wanted to make and just CALLING it Final Fantasy. Make all the criticism about DQ being samey all through its run, but at least they're making the games the fans want.
I find it disgusting that After Years sold better than FFV, even if only by a little. That fucking game should be a smear on the bottom of Shantotto's shoe
>>
>>747519851
All graphs should be this cute.
>>
>>747519851
Why did ff16 flop?
>>
>>747520613
PS4 needed games
>>
>>747520613
Everyone probably did not hate it and /v/ is a terrible sample size for public opinion.
>>
>>747519851
I always felt like it was because it picked up an unhealthy obsession with increasing the grind and cutscenes rather than making cohesive, expansive and interactable worlds. FF11 I think was when the series fell into a deep hole it still has yet to climb out of

It's why 10 and first couple of expansions of 11 were good but everything after crap.

You’re not wrong, but I’ll take 13 any day over what’s come after.

Yes

It got its price slashed within six weeks, it's one of those where most people who bought it got it for less than $20.

because spirits within was a huge flop then square ceased to exist

FFX was the last traditional Final Fantasy. Any past this can be ignored

VII (original) was the last good one.

Huge marketing campaign, even my normalfag brother played it, he's never played a FF game before or since, not really interested in RPGs either but he played that just because of the marketing.

>>747519851
X was the beginning of the end, and Woke Lmao sealed it (or the gay kiss in XVI if you don't want to count XIV as a real game).

The series has been going on for almost 40 years, longer than the career of the vast majority of the people who ever worked on them.

1-6 are flawless, yes even FF2 is better than any modern square enix approved FF game.

Modern society is more materialistic than those in the past. It's like having to account for inflation but in terms of consumer consumption.
>>
>>747524264
>It got its price slashed within six weeks
I still regret preordering this piece of shit, let alone buying it. I never even got to the timeskip, the gameplay was too trash for the content I had done.
Which is weird, because I played all the demos and was excited for the full release.
>>
>>747529818
Even Mystic Quest is better than everything after IX
>>
>>747529262
I'm playing through the 3D remake, and it's ok so far.
The job system feels very basic, and there's little incentive to multi-class.
Compare this to the job system of Wizardry 6 which came out the same year, and it's night and day.
>>
>>747519851
1. Square's biggest mistake is making a Hollywood movie with godawful story
2. Bankruptcy forced Square to merge with Enix which then made the company think only about profit.
3. Squeenix then milked FF7 to death in the mid 00s and even made their new games have the same aesthetic as FF7 like FFXIII
4. Using numbered titles for their MMO instead of naming it FF Online

I'll admit it's something of an acquired taste, me personally I think the basic job system is miles above any modern JRPG job system, though there is debate if FFV did it just as good which I believe it did.

What about HIS game?
>>
>>747519851
trick question, it was never good
>>
>>747529974
the demo was pretty good. they scrapped half of the combat system because normalniggers couldn't use 3 buttons. and the behemoth hunting quest in the demo was more entertaining than anything else in the complete game
>>
>>747520305
>16
>crazy good
yoshitpiss slurpers are the most delusional people on this board. 16 is so garbage that it pretty much killed the entire franchise.
>>
>>747530148
I don't think it's bad, but I wish that you had just one extra command during combat.
>>
>>747530136
>3. Squeenix then milked FF7 to death in the mid 00s and even made their new games have the same aesthetic as FF7 like FFXIII
Is that the issue with ff13? I thought the aesthetic was fine, it's just that it's a hallway simulator with autocombat. (Haven't played it yet)
>>
>>747519851
Every game's intentionally different so it isn't possible for all of them to be great. If you take something good and change it, then it's a simple statistical reality that the result will usually be worse. It's like rerolling a die that was already high.

Their sales aren't a good reflection of the quality of the games, that has more to do with the size of their audience. Their audience grew with VII because they started appealing to normalfags more and especially women (fujos, shippers, cosplayers). A lot of normalfags moved on, though, and the female audience was pilfered by Persona. I have always thought there was massive interest in Final Fantasy returning to its roots, but SE isn't interested in doing that because it steps on Dragon Quest's feet. When Enix bought Square, old Final Fantasy was basically tossed into the MMO/spin-off ghetto. I think there's also a desire for their games to be action-RPGs, but they don't want to do that either because it steps on Kingdom Heart's toes or something? They went more action-oriented with FFXV but they refused to go all in. Then they said it fuck it and went full throttle with XVI and completely stripped the RPG elements out, which absolutely nobody wanted.

They know what they have to do to make good, successful games, but they don't want to do it for various reasons. They want to do something else.
>>
>>747530256
barry, is that you? i thought you killed yourself already. also learn some reading comprehension you retarded niggerfaggot.
>>
>>747529818
Not a single game of the first 6 is flawless. If it wasn't for the music most of them would be kusoges. If I'm being honest the one I had the most fun with was IV.

>>747530893
not an argument
>>
>>747531026
neither is your "IF IT WASN'T FOR THE MOOOOOOSSSSIC!!" excuse, they're good games and that's why they are so popular, also your use of gook terminology like it wasn't the west that made this franchise as big as it is.
>>
>>747531653
They weren't popular until FF7 in the west. And the thing most people in the west rave about is the stories and the music. Most of the stories are too simplistic nowadays, but the music still holds up. V was the only game of the original 6 that had interesting gameplay mechanics, IV I enjoy because of its tight pacing, VI is an overrated slog and the NES games are straight up trash.
>>
>>747531864
>VI is an overrated slog
You just described VII, there is literally a move Sephiroth can perform that takes an entire minute of waiting and sitting through a cutscene to happen lmao.
>and the NES games are straight up trash.
No argument, concession accepted.
>>
>>747519851
XIII

After that we got the massive pile of shit that was early XIV, the ten years of wait until XV and the mediocrity of XVI. I am, of course, including the XIII trilogy in there
>>
>>747531864
I, III, and IV (3D version) had good gameplay too
>>
>>747519851

What happened?
>>
>>747532959
2 is weird.
It has no levels or jobs, so skills, attributes and spells level up with use. However, the game lacks the depth of Ultima or Wizardry to make it interesting, and all characters end up pretty much the same.
Worse of all, leveling up hp can be detrimental and no one knows for sure how to train agility.
Dungeon design is equally questionable. For some reason they put doors that lead to empty rooms everywhere.
Nevertheless, it's very ambitious with its story and characters compared to Final Fantasy 1 so that's cool. Everyone likes the part with the lamia.
>>
>>747519851

>>
>>747532959
XI was an early MMO which only had a very niche audience and required you to have a credit card to play. Subsequently it was the kind of experience a lot of modern MMO fags would kill to experience, but that time is over.
t. still have the folder of printed out maps because second monitor gaming wasn't a thing back then and you couldn't tab out of the game

But how? The original 1.0 was a disaster and the game's story didn't get remotely good until Shadowbringers. Don't tell me it was the gameplay?
>>
>>747519851
They forgot about their root.
The moment when they look at other games and want to copy that, they already failed before the project even begin.
>>
>>747536382
The pandemic made it explode in popularity and playerbase, specially the kind that gobble up cosmetics, fantasia, etc.

10. I was the beginning of: no controllable airship, no overworld, and one long corridor maps.
>>
>>747519851
they games stopped "feeling" fantastical since 13, final fantasy was always about these amazing and incompressible places like the crystal tower, lindbrum, midgar. etc. Them SE decides that turn combat wasn’t cutting it and when full on action rpg but without understanding how to do it and it took them until rebirth so get a somewhat good combat, add to that the x999 years that it take them to release and you have the fall of FF as a ship franchise
>>
>>747536382
COVID happened during Shadowlands, and iirc, blizzard lost a ton of retail subs to FFXIV

>>747520613
decent demo, rapid discount, crazy marketing, and (at the time) infamously long dev cycle made everyone curious to try it out
it's still a mess of a game even with the trickling DLC trying to fix it over and over
>>
>>747536382
Name a single FF game in the past 20 years that gets closer to the golden age FF games (I to IX). You can't.
>>
The last FF that Sakaguchi had any sort of credit on was 12 and I think that's the most telling thing in the world.

He's not perfect, but FF was at its best when he was at the very least wrangling the tards. There's a middle ground between FF being allowed to experiment and "let's just let whoever the fuck joins the company do whatever they want with our flagship IP" that we completely lost track of when Sakaguchi left.

This quote unironically
>>
>>747539434
This quote is meant to reinforce the "challenger's spirit" meme, but its also a perfect encapsulation of the issue because mainline Final Fantasy hasn't had those blue text boxes for the same amount of time as the series has been shit.

They pick away at little things they think are irrelevant or that they think they can do better until there's nothing left resembling what it once was.
>>
>>747537451
Sakaguchi had literally nothing to do with XII, he was credited solely for the approval he gave of the game existing. The last FF game he worked on fully was FFIX

People need to admit the Kitase, Nomura and the others are washed up at this point
>>
>>747538928
but... she cute
>>
>>747520613
It sold a massive amount on release because it was expected to be a good game and looked good superficially. Most people didn't know in advance that the story was a mess and the combat was braindead, though those who paid close attention did.

Sakaguchi barely did shit for a lot of FF games, especially in the PS era when he was too busy working on spirits within than actually directing anything
>>
>>747520613
Lot of marketing and people were hungry for a good(even if it wasn't) FF game.
What annoys me the most about XV is they cut out all these important parts of the story and make all those damn multimedia spinoffs which left the actual game barely coherent.
