Every time a new Fromsoft game comes out they have all kinds of marketing about how this time it'll be a real "living world" with more interactability worldbuilding and story than before and I fall for it every time, it's always just ruins full of hostile hobos, vague item descriptions, and npcs who say like 20 lines of incredibly vague nonsense and then die. I dont know why but I really thought that completing the Volcano manor questline would result in some huge loredump and an actual conversation with someone instead of just the usual "Alright, now theres a boss fight and afterwards everyone dies disappears or goes crazy." At the end of 90% of Fromsoft side quests I don't get a feeling of completion or success, just a disappointed feeling of "oh this particular bit of content is over now." It was especially annoying with Elden Ring because the involvement of George RR Martin, a more elaborate and detailed story, and a more active and "living" world were their biggest selling points in the pre release marketing. Everyone i knew thought Elden Ring would basically be Skyrim Souls. I like the Fromsoft formula, Ds1 is still one of my favorite games ever, but the formula is getting old and outdated, and it feels like Fromsoft isn't really learning the lessons they should be from their previous games. In Elden Ring in particular, the world lore didn't feel "exploration focused" like ds1, where i felt like I was a detective figuring it all out piece by piece, it just felt like it was completely unfinished, unfocused, overly vague and relying on the community to just come up with guesses and headcanon for most of it, which is a shame because what lore there actually was was generally pretty fun and interesting.I liked Elden Ring overall but I can't help but feel like it started trends that will ruin later Fromsoft games.

>>747526195Elden Ring IS meant to be a "living" world though, that's what makes it so jarring that there's only like one town on the planet(Jarburg) where you can just peacefully walk around the town without everyone either hiding or trying to murder you on sight. There's entire armies going on patrols and manning spread out garrisons, caravans travelling throughout the world, many settlements are populated and lived in, often full of super nice well maintained furniture and stockpiles of food and other resources, people are farming, trading, squabbling over land and getting into succession disputes, etc. But despite this, absolutely everywhere you go, civilians are hiding when you show up, nobody says anything to each other, and everyone is hostile on sight outside of a few random completely arbitrary people. This is not a dead world like dark souls, its a world in massive DECLINE but it still has actual states with governments, armies, economies, and the logistics to maintain them.
