Let's be honest, the series has gotten increasingly weird and gay since LttP, it's just you had a lot of tolerance for it until you didn't.

I overlooked the graphical style thinking maybe the gameplay or world will explain it. And it did. The problem wasn't the art style but the terrible dungeons and islands. After that I tempered my expectations for every Zelda. And the Wii/DS games were the absolute low point for the series. The GBC and 3DS games were a step up. Then a step down again with the Switch. And really I'm ambivalent now.
