MMOs are supposed to be virtual worlds. Why did we spend so much time designing stat sticks instead of building the world?

>>
Cause videogame worlds aren't impressive anymore. It ain't the mid 2000s. People are more impressed with the systems and how they interact.

What MMOs are good except for guild wars, elder scrolls online, world of kikecraft, and FF14?
>>
Building worlds (and especially the game engines that can make that happen) is hard. Tweaking variables on inventory items is easy.

Is there an actual social mmo?
There hasnt been any hope for the genre in over a decade.

im not going to say wow is better solo but ffxiv is fuck you! you want to play with your friend no you have to solo this shit for the storyline. and its not fun solo its extremely annoying to be in a party and have to leave it cause the story says to. just to watch a shitty cutscene before you can rejoin the party.

Is the hot take horizontal progression? What riches and power are you or NPCs supposed to get in a linear treadmill themepark? All there is to do is push ilvl, getting an upgrade sometimes being really rare.

How do you make horizontal progression?

What A+ MMO have we had in the last 20 years? New World? The world building was really good with arena and city control. We need more systems like that. But linear ilvl pushing is the most ridiculous design in the genre.

EVE. Especially in a corporation. Declaring war on the largest corporation to have hundreds of ships coming through chokepoint systems is kino.

>>747530180
There's a lot of downtime in EVE if you're just camping gates, but it's really social in roams too.

Everybody should play EVE, especially if you're tired of other MMOs. It's embarrassing how much you have to train to max out niches like a specific frigate fit, mining, reprocessing, even trading. If they would remove skill points (24 years or $6.5k of leveling), I think everybody would play every once in a while. A true sandbox would be revolutionary.
>>
>>747536242
THe concept behind EVE was neat, but actually playing it was a spreadsheet simulator. I have more fun with Star Citizen, and even Elite Dangerous (which is WAY less fun than Star Citizen and far more meh, even finished).
>>
>>747532228
>How do you make horizontal progression?
You make items do stuff besides damage, you introduce niches that these items influence and slowly build out mechanics so there are dozens of different items useful at the high end of play depending on what you're fighting.
Oldschool Runescape does this, probably better than any current active MMO. They just released a boss where one of the best pieces of gear you can bring is over 2 decades old because a boss has a few mechanics where it shines

Devs put enough into themepark gameplay to make plenty of dynamic, emergent gameplay systems. You can make trees choppable in a day.

don't even attempt to use the spreadsheet meme if you have never played eve retard
for 99% of players, including someone like you, you eve is about pressing f1-f9
>>
>>747529410
Its blizzards fault for hiring EQ raidfags for consultants. Raiding killed mmos.
People bitching about grinding also killed mmos.
People who are too fucking new they dont understand grinding doesnt mean WoW style questgrinding which does in fact such and who complain when anyone speaks fondly of grinding because thats what they think of killed mmos

Its hopeless.
>>
>>747536242
multiboxing is cancer and any mmo that allows it, let alone fundamentally encourages it in its game design, is a bad mmo.
also gates have always been kind of bad in my opinion, choke points in space dont sit right with me
apart from that EVE is a good game
>>
>>747537225
I played it back in the goonswarm days, faggot. For a lot of people pressing F1-F9 at a rate that's not even that of a normal MMO "1, 2, 3, 2,1,4", is not as engaging as either a RTS on one side or real time space sim on the other. The spreadsheet bits is about looking at where you need to make use of calculators so you don't get economically raped or waste a fuckload of time. Nobody would say that everyone in WoW for instance is playing TradeskillMaster as their game, but those people absolutely have an effect on everyone else and are the reason you can't find some reasonably cheap shit because lolbertarian azeroth decided the charts said now was the time to corner the market on three types of cloth or some shit. Same thing in EVE, you've got spreadsheets and calculators if you don't want to spend ages fucking off to sell something a long ways away and realizing that by the time you got there you may actually be losing money on trade, mining for the time you've put in.

Fast, ranged frigates are 3D Diablo hyperjets. It's some of the most innovative gameplay in the industry despite being 20 years old.

All PvP (and exploration) has huge adrenergics (tunneling; the shakes) because you're betting your ship and cargo. It's one of the most intense games in the industry.

>>747536705
I'm not sure any game passes EVE in build options. There are dozens of viable fits per ship. It's really fun to sit in a fitting program and try to make novel loadouts -- you can spend hours just playing with implants and different techs of equipment to max CPU and power grid fitting. You can also check DPS graphs of different ranges, speeds, and transversal velocities vs. other loadouts.

There are also really expensive modules dropped from officers which help you load more or better items by having lesser fitting requirements. And there are tournament earned ships that are really powerful such that players take on dozens of players with if they can get their hands on one and are good enough. But most people want to T1 or T2 fit because it's affordable, and probably to keep their kill boards positive.

What else are you supposed to do in a linear ilvl themepark?
>>
>>747537547
I guess you have to ban MBing if you want to purify solo gameplay (not getting tackled for a dozen alts to dogpile). I wonder how much subscription income it is for EVE.

I don't mind chokepoints. How else would you center logistic routes? I think it would work well in a fantasy game too.

EVE offloads a lot of module micro to spatial gameplay; capacitor energy to run modules like weapons, shields or armor, and propulsion; and overheating -- managing your transversal, module I/O, and overheat juggles, plus drones if you have them. At least for fast, ranged playstyles, just handling your ship speed and transversal can be extremely micro intensive.

Here's an example of nullsec PvP with a Slicer. Just imagine he's double clicking in the direction of his camera to guide the ship. He takes on multiple ships by navigating away from snipers and by spiraling downward from close, fast ships to take advantage of his superior mobility (turn rate):

Here's one with a click highlighter:

Like I said, it's 3D Diablo.

>>747536334
Star Citizen seems cool. I think it has Newtonian physics, and it's a PvP MMO. The industry is ready.

But how are they going to handle people owning permanent ships?
>>
Is Star Citizen anywhere close to being done? How are the animations and networking?

Is it going to have shooter gameplay on planets?

Horizontal progression is a buzzword for people who want to sound profound but don't understand RPG mechanics. If you're getting stronger in any niche its vertical. If it's crafting for 100 hours for ice armor that specifically gives 'horizontal options' for one ice boss it's still vertical in relation to that boss. Just call people retarded when they bring up "horizontal progression". If you want more options you can always roll a new character and now you have 'horizontal' options if you invest time into that character to gear them out. But nobody ever said that before guild wars 2 drooling retards thought they were clever and invented a mental gymnastics term to explain why their RPG had no progressive RPG content.

Plenty of horizontal options exist. Elemental equipment, range, speed, size and effect of AoE. Poison DOTs vs. instant damage. What else?

ffxiv is a largely solo mmorpg with some social features and largely optional group content. the story is... acceptable? tons of tedium and dogshit pacing but there's good bits now and then. unfortunately the first ~100 hours are dogshit and the payoff only starts in heavensward
wow is mostly about the systems, the game doesn't really begin until level cap. nobody gives a shit about the retarded story or character arcs, it's badly written tripe. the gameplay itself is way better than ffxiv tho

all in all wow does offer some unique things while ffxiv is a much better solo experience but it gets mogged by most actual offline rpgs so i'm not sure it's worth bothering with
