People like to harp on GTA 4 for having a massive disconnect between story and gameplay but the entire MGS series is much more jarring.

If you get caught in MGS3 you should just say fuck it and pull out an AK and go loud for a bit but I think a lot of people just instantly die and reset. It's a fucked way to play the games but unfortunately I think Kojima's game design and reward systems have incentivized it.
