if you hate translators THAT much why wont you just learn japanese then huh nonny?

I never liked this argument because it antagonizes people who complain about translations and shift the blame from localizers.

I am, if you lurk 4chan for more than 5 years and can't speak jap yet you're a subhuman. Especially if you play jap games/visual novels or watch anime.

Why can't "localizers" just not be faggots instead of expecting me to spend years of my life learning a niche language?
>>
>>747543913
It literally doesnt. You wont do SHIT about it, so either consume slop like a good goy or do something productive.
>>
>>747543991
you can cry all you want but dont forget that you wont do shit. learn the language.
>>
>>747543769
I just don't have the patience to learn another language. I'm cool with fan translations, or people starting with AI translations and then polishing it up over time while still leaving the raw AI translation as an option. I always got annoyed that some translation groups would "claim" a translation, when having two or more options is just better to me anyways.

>AI can translate
AI isn't yet a substitute for learning Japanese. Dogshit human translators setting the bar low doesn't mean AI is good yet. I don't understand why EOPs struggle with this. You know the humans that butcher games are bottom of the barrel. You should have higher standards.
>>
It's funny, I didn't hate translators that much until I learned Japanese.
>>
>>747547907
Sure, translation as a concept is ontologically evil. In an ideal world, languages would be segregated and anyone claiming to represent the thoughts of another individual via interpretation would be burned alive.
>>
>>747547725
in case you aren't aware subhuman broinoid kun, learning JP or any language is tied to understanding messages and novelty (memorability).

In other words, the reason children find it so easy is because they are stupid/inexperianced
as you fry out your dopamine centers, you can continue to learn, but the effort barrier becomes higher and higher because you cannot find entertaining input that is simultaniously comprehensible .

>>747548749
>Sure, translation as a concept is ontologically evil

I didn't say translation. You can translate without being a fucking retard. It is in fact possible. "Localizers" are just sub-human.

Pure cope
>>
>>747548804
No, you can't. All translation is bastardization, the world would be a better place if attempting it was grounds for being burned to death.

You're going to start crying about how I'm making a strawman now, but these are my legitimate beliefs, and you're a monolingual so you couldn't hope to understand anyway.

The Undertale Japanese translation is a clear example of good translation. Also notice how it's EN->JP not JP->EN so the usual retards aren't fucking it up. It's almost like JP->EN translators are just extremely unprofessional and actually professional translators exist in an entirely different realm from those morons.
>>
>>747549117
>Civilization is built around relying on other people to do their jobs properly.
No it isn't. Capitalism is an evolution of survival of the fittest.

It is not profitable to hire scholars with immense experience in their field and skilled writers to translate at a tolerable level. It is very profitable to hire trannies to use jeetGPT and tranny editors willing to work for 5 cents an hour if they can insert ideological poison into someone else's work.

It's the same reason your washing machine will now break in 5 years when they used to last 50. Why do good work, you aren't rewarded for it, you're punished for it. If you spend all that money on good translation and the game turns out to just be a dud anyway, you go bust. If you spend nothing on it, it doesn't matter if the game is shit or good, your risk is far lower and the proles will buy it regardless of the translation quality because they have no other choice. There's no trannylator consortium making the quality worse too, all of these companies just arrived at the idea on their own.
>>
>>747549184
It's hot dogshit and Fox is a lazy weeb who doesn't know Japanese. Sure, it's not as bad as the slop Toda Natsuko shits out, but it's not good.
>>
>>747543769
I play games with shitty translations. That is to say if i want to play a single Japanese game at all. If the context is lost then gaming isn't a serious enough medium for it to matter.
To my understanding printed books in any language in history try to make better translations attempts knowing it all falls apart if it's not done correctly. So if gaming does not apply the same standards then i don't worry about it. Video games are not a real art form. They're entertainment no matter how many shitty games like Mixtape get made.
>>
>>747549473
The translation has basically no real mistakes. The most common "issue" is it playing it safe for things that don't really have a good equivalent. You can understand how and why the Japanese was derived the way it was from the English. JP->EN can't even do that much. Which is why they have to regurgitate talking points like literal translation bad or Japanese is hard. Instead of just actually justifying the translation.
>>
>>747549782
Eh, it has many changes that don't match up to the English meaning. Some might call it localization, but I'd call it inaccurate.
>>
>>747549782
>The translation has basically no real mistakes.
The overreliance on 役割語 is intolerable and clearly a heavy handed attempt at localisation. You can argue that you like it or the characters would totally talk like that if the game was initially written in Japanese, but it's still localisation.

I can't go any deeper into it than that because Undertale is absolute slop in both languages and I have zero interest in ever revisiting it on any level, but I've seen plenty of other E>J works out of mild curiosity and they're always generally lacking. The barrier is a two way roadblock, this isn't like dub work where the Japanese have a huge VA market and English is hampered by shit like SAG-AFTRA.
>>
>>747550017
>initially written in Japanese, but it's still localisation
That's the point. Japanese players should have the same experience as English players. They're using the tools present in Japanese to accurately reflect how the characters read in English. If you don't you're not getting across the same tone, or meaning. That is the point of localization. Localization isn't inherently bad, it's just a tool that is part of translator. Because the goal is to translate meaning. Bad translators use the term incorrectly because it's because the average Joe doesn't know what localization is and won't correct them.
>>
>>747550239
>Japanese players should have the same experience as English players.
Then they should learn English.

Localisation is a necessary part of translation, but it errs far more towards the interpretive side of it. All dialogue exists on a sliding scale between "perfectly reproducible in context" and "requires heavy rewrites for the same feel". 雲 can be on the "perfect" side until the following line is about 蜘蛛, and then you're all the way to the opposite end of the scale. The problem with interpretive translation is that you can be wrong. Sometimes the curtains are just blue.
