You can understand how and why the Japanese was derived the way it was from the English. JP->EN can't even do that much. They're using the tools present in Japanese to accurately reflect how the characters read in English. If you don't you're not getting across the same tone, or meaning. That is the point of localization. Localization isn't inherently bad, it's just a tool that is part of translator. Because the goal is to translate meaning. Bad translators use the term incorrectly because it's because the average Joe doesn't know what localization is and won't correct them.
